It's been 3 months since that fateful day on Cactus Island where the Freedom Pirates did battle with an extremist sect of death priests. While only a handful of men were left behind, to the strongest of the crew, it felt like something greater was now weighing them down. They needed some R&R. They decided to stay at sea for a considerable amount of time, only stopping off to restock when necessary. After sufficient time had passed, Morose the chef approached Salas, the captain and doctor, with the rumor he heard in the market.

Apparently, there was an island called Little Garden where great beasts and ancient flora stilled existed. Too dangerous for common folk, it would be the perfect onland getaway for Salas and Morose. Each would wish to go there for their own reasons and unbeknownst to them, they would run into a previous acquaintance. Also unknown to them was the marine presence working in tandem with some nature activists and researchers to preserve the island's many exotic animals and plants...

The Freedom Ship drops anchor and goes ashore in the morning of a foreseen-to-be nice day. It is hot and humid, but the flora was dense enough to keep the sun from beating down unbearably. Unusual plants and animals were already making themselves known while a volcano erupts in the distance.

Salas could scarcely remember when he had last felt like himself, or more accurately, was having doubts he even knew what "himself" felt like anymore. He had always thought of himself as a wise, charismatic (if a bit out of place) human being. But that seemed to have been a lifetime ago, dozens of lifetimes if he counted those that were snuffed out along the way as the price of his continued life. Adverse circumstances had made him a monster, a force of death that required containment, one that seemed much stronger than his will had the power to subdue. Then, a mere three months ago he had willingly unbound his murderous spirit and nearly killed himself in the bloodbath that followed.

The Shaman still performed his duties, keeping the men of the crew in good health, putting on a front of composure and firm leadership despite the fragility of his own mind and the crushing burden of the guilt he refused to let go of. He avoided sleeping any less than was absolutely necessary, not wanting to face the horrific visions his mind would force him to see as it wandered in his dreams, sometimes going for whole days without sleeping. He spent his waking hours moving about the ship or closed in his quarters studying the different herbal samples picked up from supply stops or meditating on the spiritual mementos he had taken from past conflicts. Things were slow as he recovered gradually from his extensive injuries and the repercussions of how much strain he had imposed on his body, but he took some comfort in his physical weakness as it seemed to keep his anger in check when his body lacked the strength to act upon it.
-----

Salasais found himself intrigued by the rumors regarding Little Garden. Most ships steer clear of the place because of the inhospitable environment and powerful beasts and how long it takes a log pose to reset there. "Hmm, such a concentration of natural force could benefit Salas' condition. For a place to resist the passage of time for so long, it must contain valuable secrets." He was speaking privately to Morose in the kitchen. "Being a fearsome place, our enemies will be hesitant to search for us there, and we can protect ourselves from beasts easily enough with proper attention."

As the Freedom Ship approached the island, Salas moved to the fore to breathe it in. For the first time in almost a year he felt as if good could come of the land they approached. The volcanoes were somewhat unsettling, but the overall climate of the jungle felt quite like home. He had been so sick of cold, of desert, it felt like a breath of fresh air to taste the rich humidity of Little Garden. His mind couldn't put itself at ease completely, as no journey has been without more than its fair share of terror, but this had been a good start so far, and his own spirit yearned for the chance to see what secrets this mighty land might share with him. This land is said to have remained the same for eons, would that Salas could take in just a fraction of that constancy...

Kid’s eyes opened wide all of a sudden, jerking back from his workbench and almost toppling onto the floor. Looking about groggily, he realised that he’d fallen asleep working again. But what had he been working on? His eyes now focused on his bench, a smile grew on his sleepy face as he reached out for the rectangular piece of technology, giving it a few prods and pokes to work out if he was correct. He was. He’d managed to finish his Multitool, and when scrolling through the information placed in it… He’d stored some music on it too. He really did work best at night.

Plugging in the device to the station he’d made in the wall previously, he flicked through the songs until he came to one which he was confident he’d like. Well… It should at least cheer him up anyway. With the click of a button it came to life, a smile soon spreading even further across his face. The mixed use of guitar and drums worked well, and from the very first word uttered… It just worked. With a little hop in his step, he headed back to his room, wondering what had woken him in the first place.

It didn’t take Kid long to realise that it was in fact incredibly hot in his room, moreso than usual and worryingly so with how cold it had been before. With no breakfast to eat on board, and only a few cubes of chocolate left in his pocket, he needed to get ready before he arrived at the island. After all, it had been pretty close yesterday, so today he would probably be an hour away at most. Kneeling down next to his bed, his hands reached into the darkness, retrieving a box full of clothing and food, which he quickly started searching through. A pair of light blue denim shorts, and a light grey t-shirt later, the teen was ready for his adventure on this next island.

“This music… Works”

He thought to himself. After moping around for weeks now, he was impressed that over the past few days he’d managed to get everything he needed to do done. He’d cleaned up the ship, done some training, made some new tech and was now going to… Visit an island alone. Taking a deep breath, he grabbed a few metal spheres from his desk, tied his whip and gummy to his belt loop, and slung his green backpack over his back. He then quickly grabbed his Multitool, letting the play device store the song temporarily to finish it. He was sure he had about a minute left on it.

Heading upstairs, it was only then that the head from outside hit him, causing him to stumble slightly before he made any attempt to open his eyes. When he did though, he couldn’t help but feel… Stunned. A wide variety of jungle like trees loomed over him, and he was sure he could make out some kind of mountain or something further into the island too. Having grown up on Loguetown, views like this were simply incredibly, so much that he could hardly comprehend.

BANG!

The teen stumbled, landing heavily on his side with a groan, just as the song which had been playing through the ship ended. Just like that, his motivation to do anything ended and so he merely laid there for a while. Eventually he felt intrigued enough to check what the loud noise had been, and so scrambled to his feet and headed towards the front of the ship. Looking down, it was only then that he realised his mistake. He’d managed to run the ship aground.

“Ah crap…”

He droned to himself, trudging over to the anchor and picking it up. No matter how many times he picked it up, it never seemed to get any lighter, but nonetheless he managed to throw it overboard into the water. Solving the beached ship issue was future Kid’s problem. Right now it was time to explore, and also have breakfast. He was starving and the chocolate would melt soon, so no point letting it go to waste. Unwrapping the bar, he took a large bite and sat down on one of the railings. His eyes were constantly scanning the horizon, not quite managing to take in how impressive the view actually was. He did wonder what the noises were though.

Morose

Morose in hot weather

Jungle Ambience

Jungle View

Morose stood ashore on a sandy beach. Morose leaned forward slightly to remain upright. The ocean was wearing away the beach while the jungle pushed as far out as it could. In addition to standing awkwardly, Morose actively watched where he stepped to avoid slipping on an overgrown tree root or plant leaf to the face. Morose dressed casually light that day in bright, loose colors. He did not appear overly excited with deceptively sleepy eyes, but he looked over at Salas several times. Although it was very hot and humid, Morose appeared to be comfortably cool without a hint of sweat on his brow standing in the shade of a large tree and occasionally getting caressed by an ocean breeze that tugged on his hair and hem of his clothes.

Several men piled out of the going-to-shore boat they all took to get to land from the Freedom Ship docked not far off. Morose finally gave them attention as they started ascending the sands toward him. After being at sea for so long, several appeared very happy to be on land. A few jumped around, kicking sand, and carrying on like children. Morose eyed those individuals with disdain. Others were more timid, looking around regularly, hunched over slightly as if to instantly cower, and regularly looking to Salas as if waiting for an order. Morose looked again to Salas without a word. This look was different. It was followed by Morose sighing through his nose before speaking up.

"Listen up, men. We've been at sea long enough that we need to resupply. I'll be taking a group of you with me to gather. We will not be straying far from the ship due to this island being said to be very hazardous."

when Morose finished, the young chef turned to the captain expectantly. All the crew that had come ashore also turned to Salas with expectant looks. Some of the crew became visibly annoyed with Morose's announcement and grumbled under their breaths. Some of the men moved toward Salas and stood off from the others. The show may have been comparable to animals vying for supremacy. Morose rolled his eyes at the whole thing. He smiled faintly when looking off to the side where no one was except the wilds of the jungle.

The peace of looking at the jungle was disrupted once they were ashore as the crew engaged in their varied activities. Morose had made a demand for helping to gather supplies from nearby areas and the crew once more disregarded the chef's words. Salas honestly didn't enjoy the position of authority he had been placed in as the pirate underlings had often shown themselves to be weak and foolish in his eyes.

He took on an air of authority briefly to get things in order, "This land is savage and untamed, but has abundant resources. Help Morose gather the necessary goods, in this task his words are as Our own. Salas will scout around the gathering party for danger. If you are attacked, call and We will protect."

There was some measure of grumbling among the crew, but a stern gaze from the Shaman was enough to put it to rest as they prepared to follow Morose into the lush border of the jungle. Salas entered the brush as well, a short distance from where the others made their entrance. It was not a small part of him that wanted to stray farther from the group, but exploring this dreamlike world could wait until the crews needs were met. As he carefully made his way through the thicker brush of the jungle, he saw that much of the plant life looked similar to what he had known in his home but seemed like a purer, more dominant form of it. He couldn't help but feel a sense of awe for the place and he had barely scratched the surface. His skin tingled at the thought of what could lie in wait here. There would be danger, that was certain, but he could think of no more appropriate place to draw the will of his fungal parasite into a form with which he could commune like a true shaman. "It will be here that Salas regains balance, We can feel it. Then he will become what he must be, for himself, for Us." The Shaman whispered to himself. He maintained a line of sight with the group accompanying Morose while keeping his ears open for the sound of a hostile presence.

After a little while of snacking, eventually Kid hopped down from the ship, landing heavily in the sand and fighting to keep balance. Once steady, he looked up towards the trees in search of some sort of edible food, only to find there was a significant lack of that. He huffed slightly, walking towards the brush in an attempt to figure out what exactly was on the island, unable to see much besides some very tall trees, which he suspected made up a significant amount of the island.

Pushing aside some brush, the teen continued on his way, keeping an eye out for locals and for any sort of danger that may be presented. Somehow he had a feeling there probably wouldn’t be much in the way of technology here, and certainly not a washing machine. He supposed his messy laundry would have to wait for now. Still… That was a very normal problem to have, which was almost novel to him with every other issue under the sun he’d had to deal with. It made him wonder, why him? Perhaps it was the world’s way of getting revenge for defying death and trying to live a happy life. Maybe he was just unlucky.

Eventually Kid came to a small clearing, one which housed a fair amount of commotion. Ducking behind a large leaf, he carefully peered round to see what was happened. Perhaps the native animals were fighting, or maybe a tribe of some sort lived here? As his eyes adjusted, his short-sightedness making things difficult, he couldn’t help but feel moderately confused. Instead of the normal wildlife that he’d expect from such an island, he instead could see… Two legged rat things? They were bald and had wide maws, with pathetic little front arm things. There were two of them, bouncing around each other and screeching as if they were fighting or something.

“Odd…”

He muttered, before readying his arm slightly. Briefly, Kid considered taking a shot at them, before deciding that it was best not. He had no idea of anything about them, and perhaps they were only babies, which could explain their energy and size. Now that he looked closer though, they did seem to be similar to lizards, as if such creatures had managed to evolve perhaps? The Grandline sure was odd, and it was a shame Katie wasn’t here to see it… Perhaps she’d have liked seeing stuff like that. After all, lizards and fish were pretty close relatives he was sure, although was that deemed as offensive?

Hiding in the greenery, Kid moved on from his spot, keeping low and walking along the outside of the clearing. He’d made a mental note of generally where his ship was, although no doubt would lose it and have to circle the coast to retrieve it. If he had something to mark the trees with, he totally would have. Slowly, his speed increased, until he was moving at an average jogging pace through the bushes and other greenery, hoping to find something new. He wanted food, he needed to resupply. But… He had no idea how to cook lizard.

Morose's face became sullen as he glared off into the distance. His audible sigh startled one of the pirates close to him. While a few of the pirates turned to Morose, Morose seemed to be internally debating something as he squinted his eyes and tilt his head back and forth. Of the men present, only perhaps a dozen came ashore and only 4 of them bothered to look in Morose's direction when he appeared ready to speak. Once Morose seemed ready to speak, he looked around, noted many of the men were not paying him any mind and cleared his throat loud enough for them to hear over the occasional explosion or cry of animal in the distance. Those not looking at him continued doing so and openly commented on how they would either go off on their own or follow after Salas. Morose scowled and said out loud as if to no one in particular.

"I'll be taking 6 of you with me. I won't be able to look after more than that at a time responsibly. Those I select will follow me. Anyone who refuses will be left to fend for themselves on the island since I'll not be cooking for them,"

Morose concluded firmly. The last drawing the attention of most of the men that had been ignoring him up until then. While some left or went for Salas, Morose had enough of those who stayed to create a squad to go for food and supplies. The chef paired them and gave them descriptions of some of the more common fruits and animals they could eat. The list was not exhaustive. Morose's sleepy face seemed too tired to go on. In truth, the island was too dangerous for them to harvest some of the potential food sources themselves. Morose kept his hands stuffed in his light jacket even as they entered the jungle giving off the impression he was nonchalant about the whole thing. The perceptive would notice the subtle outline of knives shifting the fabric of his sleeves and the hum of his eyes as they carefully took in everything within the scene before them.

Morose instructed each group to stay within eye sight of each other or at least Morose. Most were not receptive to being treated like children, but they begrudgingly complied. However, other than Salas, Morose was the only one to return from their time on cactus island. The men had grown a questioning respect for the youthful cook that was fleeting most times when food wasn't involved.

As Kid was moving through the jungle, he could hear the sudden cries of a woman. If he looked, who would be able to make out a frantic girl being surrounded by little dinosaurs as she swatted at them. It looked as though she may have been bit a few times. Predators would be drawn to the blood. Without aid, it looked like the girl's time was short.

Studious Girl

"Please! Someone help me!!!"

There were about 6 little carnivorous dinosaurs bobbing around the woman with potentially more being drawn in or watching from the plants and shadows that surrounded the woman.

Salas had a few followers and noted the number that had gone with Morose, not quite adding up to the number that had gone ashore. They had only just landed and already some of the men had somehow decided that they had their own ideas of what to do on the island. The Shaman couldn't help but feel contempt for many of the freedom pirates, he couldn't do anything if they lacked the sense to follow the orders of someone stronger than them just because the strength was in a smaller container. Anyone who did not take the jungle seriously would be consumed by it, such was the natural way of things.

"Keep your weapons ready, showing any sign of weakness in such a wild place would invite disaster." He did not look back at those scouting with him. He would have preferred to carry out this task alone as having others nearby hindered his combat ability, requiring him to exercise restraint.

It wasn't long before Salasais could hear several sounds denoting movement nearby. The sounds were fairly light, but numerous. A detail which the shaman found mildly concerning, if only for the sake of his companions. "Stand back and prepare to fight, We will investigate."

Thus he darted into the brush from which he heard the sounds, the moss on his back bristling slightly before twisting into an extra pair of arms in anticipation of danger. If something really was out there looking for an opportunity to strike, he would draw it into a fight on his own terms, or at the very least show the unseen creatures that he was aware of them and ready for them. If they hadn't struck yet, he felt it was because they were sizing them up.

His journey through the shrubbery to find something of interest soon took a turn as he heard the screams of… A girl? Naturally he was cautious, enough so that he instinctively dashed behind the nearest large piece of greenery, slowly but surely peeking out to see what was happening. Sure, he may have been more scared of his own kind than weird lizard creatures that he’d never seen but… Well there wasn’t really an excuse. His eyes darted around the nearby environment, until eventually he found where the noise had been coming from.

It took Kid a few moments to fully react to what he was seeing, that being a young-ish girl being attacked by lizard like creatures similar to the ones he’d seen earlier. She had multiple little specs of blood across her arms which he could assume would be their doing, and she seemed… Scared. And she’d asked for help and… His legs started to move automatically. He hadn’t exactly been the hero in many of his tales, and somehow he had the feeling that he wouldn’t be here either, but he was still willing to help out people as long as they didn’t hurt people he cared about… And currently there was nobody that he cared about so...

The teen picked up his pace, pushing aside the bushes and reaching towards his waist where he had his candy whip. He hadn’t practiced much with this, and a sudden sense of fear overcame him as he realised if he screwed up he’d hurt the girl. As he burst out from the bushes, he swung hard with his right arm, watching the cola whip smack into the nearest lizard creature, causing it to screech and topple over sideways. He figured they must have been predecessors to lizards, simply because their pathetic front legs limited balance etcetera.

The first lizard backed off, whilst the other five suddenly turned their sights on him, no longer as interested in the girl. Perhaps it was because he proved some sort of threat to them, or perhaps they could smell the chocolate. A mix of defensiveness for the injured girl, and over his precious snacks which he’d already eaten pumped him up a little bit, as he lashed out at the next creature, barely missing and striking the ground next to it instead. And just like that he’d set them off, all yapping like dogs and circling him now, trying to take bites out of him.

“Get back!”

He shouted at the girl, who seemed to only flinch, unable to manage either words or move. Did he look that bad today? Well… The answer was yes but… Fine, he couldn’t just drop a grenade then. Stooping down he went to grab one of the creatures, only for it to hop to the side, surprisingly mobile whilst another nipped at his leg, causing a small amount of chocolate to trickle, not that he really felt it. Quickly placing his whip back at his side, he reached onto his back and drew his candy mace, swinging it in one large arc without providing time for the creatures to react. Several of them were struck, sending them flying backwards into brush and tree alike. This action seemed to spook them for a moment, causing them to pause, before all fleeing in the same direction.

“A-are you… Ok?”

Kid stammered, a little uncertain of his words. It had been… What, a week without social interaction? Maybe a little more, and he could really feel it. Any progress he’d made with Katie had almost completely reverted, and he was back to being the nervous wreck she’d found him as in Loguetown. He tried to clear his head, slowly and cautiously approaching the girl, unsure how to act or what to do. Did he crouch down, did he offer her a hand up, did he made an attempt to fix up her wounds? In the end he panicked, remaining silent and waiting for a response, his fingers running across the handle of his candy mace whilst he heard screeching in the distance. No matter what they’d need to move soon.

Morose in hot weather

Jungle Ambience

Jungle View

Morose and the handful with him cautiously creep through the forest. Morose maintained his cool attitude, but each new sound provoked the chef to look in that way, as least obviously as possible. The men were similarly jumpy and more expressive, which caused Morose to smirk at each sudden outburst.

Eventually the group came to an area of the jungle that they didn't have to mercilessly chop through. Morose called the attention of the men there.

"Alright, we are going to spread out from here. Remember to stay in pairs, and as a reminder, here is a list of the things to look for."

Morose then dutifully handed out slips of paper to each group. The men looked a the drawings with expressions that varied between annoyed and amused. Morose held his head confidently before glaring when one of the crew scoffed at the depiction. Not all the drawings were the best. At least the writing was neat. The men then went their separate ways, combing the area while staying close to the meetup point. Morose stayed back. As the minutes passed, occasionally a man would come back with something for Morose to expect. Some baskets had accompanied them and any food items Morose deemed worthy went into the basket. Items that were not quality or not food, Morose chucked over his shoulder without wasting another moment on the item. Those occasions followed by Morose pointing back in the direction they come from with the rubbish gained some grumbles from the men, but of the ones that had accompanied Morose, none were so strong headed as to actively contest him. It did help Morose's cause when some of the men that returned empty handed saw some of the bounty retrieved by the others.

Morose's head suddenly spun about sharply at the sound of what could have been a hull breaking apart. Not far off, a massive tree splintered free from the ground and fell. Some of the men with Morose were in the trees line of falling. In the moment, Morose's eyes went wide and his face paled before his fists clenched and he dashed toward the men. To Morose, the men turned in slow motion to face what would likely be the end of them. The youth was too small and narrow to save more than one of the thicker men by tackling him, and even then it may not be enough to get the man and himself out of the way. At some point, slender kitchen knives were in each of the chef's hands and they sparkled in the occasional beam of light that hit them through the trees.

The knife fighter did not stop for either man as he glided through the air over their heads, his knives leaving a silver streak as he passed. He landed hard in the soft soil on the other side and slid several feet as he forcefully killed his momentum and turned back around to see....

*CRASSSSHHH!*

The tree had landed with the men crushed beneath it. Morose had missed and looked confusedly at the knives in his hands. They were unsoiled. He had missed. The tension in Morose's body faded like a the freeing of a rubber band. He would have likely crumbled to his knees had he not willed himself to continue standing. He stared in confusion at the tree for a time. The other men in the group rushed up finally. Some cursed and blamed luck. Others whispered something inaudible about Morose. Morose's ears perked up and he quickly moved to the tree, seemingly ignoring the other men that had gathered and were eyeing him uncertainly.

*CHOP*

*SLASH*

Morose sliced away a section of the tree and the 2 men burst out onto the ground in a pile of wood chunks and pulp. The tree was old and rotten with a hallow inside. Additionally, one of the branches of the tree didn't crumbled when it hit the ground. It instead remained firm and speared into the tree which created a space for the two men when the tree fell. They were lucky and it was likely the suddenly resistance of the branch which threw off Morose's calculations. Morose sighed, allowing a moment of pleasantness before visibly berating himself. The men laughed and joked as they pulled them men out of the debris. It was purely luck they survived and Morose's efforts were forgotten.

The youth's mood had soured after they left the fallen tree and he was short with everyone after that. He openly glared for the sake of glaring. One of the more timid fellows eventually made an effort to lighten Morose's mood which helped. He talked about dinner that evening, and Morose could not help but indulge his curiosity and speaking of cooking did lighten Morose's mood and he actually smiled at the thought of it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Salas and his company heard the loud crash of a tree falling in the distance without any knowledge of who it involved. They had bigger things on their mind. By that point, they had already encountered a few dinosaurs and large mammals. Nothing was overly dangerous or hostile, but it was enough to cause excitement a few times over the several minutes they traveled.
That's when Salas leading the way saw it: a hut with smoke rising from a chimney. Walking toward the hut with their back to Salas's group was a lone figure appearing to be of a shorter stature and dressed in skins of some kind.
Breathing quickly before finally being able to calm herself now that the immediate threat was taken care of, the girl looked to Kid. She was about to speak when adjusting her glasses allowed her to really see him and she squinted a bit noticing something.
"Um, thank you, uh..."
She fished for a name that she did not know.
"sir....anyway. I should be going now..."
She said tentatively as she began inching her way away from kid, bumping into a log, but correcting herself and pretending to mean to do it all along.
"AAAAANNNKKK!!"
Came a shrill cry of a dinosaur presently unseen. Something was coming toward them of a larger variety than the little ones Kid disposed of. The girl that seemed anxious to get away immediately marched back to Kid.
"Please help me. We need to get away from here and I can't do it on my own!"
She pleaded with bulged out eyes that seemed on the brink of panic and despair.
Things seemed mostly quiet up until that point, at least as far as ancient jungles go. There was the sound of a tree falling in the direction of the gathering party and Salas considered looking into it, but from what he could tell the random occurrence hadn't ended in any sort of disaster that couldn't be handled. What had taken his attention and that of his accompanying crewmen was the presence of a few large, yet relatively docile creatures, herbivores by the look of them. The Shaman had to put a hand up to remind his companions not to fire on the beasts on account of neither having the strength to carry the carcass back to shore nor knowledge of exactly what consequences would follow the discharging of firearms out here. "There will be time for hunting later, best not to attack anything unless it is openly hostile for now."
The men weren't exactly eager to pass up the chance to take down exotic beasts, but they knew better than to sass the one that was appointed to be their captain. Salasais was never directly hostile to the crew, but they all respected his power and feared being on the receiving end of it since a few of the men that weren't careful around his poisonous spores had ended up dead. Whether he would ever intentionally use his spores against the other Freedom Pirates or not was irrelevant as long as they avoided giving him a reason to.
When there wasn't the thought of killing the beasts at the forefront of everyone's minds, Salas found himself admiring the majestic creatures. Massive reptiles and mammals that managed to thrive in such an unforgiving environment were always worthy of at least some respect, but his attention couldn't remain with them for long as Salas noticed something a short ways ahead: A hut, apparently with a human walking into it. By the looks of it, they had lived here for some time or were at least prepared to stick around.
The group was obviously on edge and Salas himself certainly had his guard up. The fact that animals lived relatively comfortably nearby hinted that whoever this person was, they didn't drastically disrupt the ecosystem but it was difficult to tell how receptive they would be to company. Collecting his composure, The Shaman prepared himself to make contact and slowly approached the hut while watching for traps, his subordinates following a couple yards behind. He wouldn't immediately call out to the hut's resident, opting to be closer to the place before calling attention to himself in case they would attempt to fight from a distance.
He really hoped that there could be a peaceful interaction with this native, but there would be something to be gained either way. If they could be reasoned with, having the knowledge of someone who had spent some time on the island would be valuable; if he was forced to kill them, then at least the hut likely held some useful resources.
There were multiple calm ways that Kid could have gone about things, none of which he managed to accomplish. Instead his face turned red and his ability to manage words plummeted, as he watched the girl thank him and back up slightly. He reddened even more at being called sir, which although not a bad thing just felt weird and… Different. If he hadn’t have been so shy and awkward he might have smiled, but instead he simply nodded a little bit, looking around as if for some sort of distraction.
Thankfully, the distraction he wished for appeared sooner than he’d thought, as a loud cry could be heard nearby. Further in the distance he also noted some sort of crashing noise, but knew it wasn’t as major as what was happening right now. A bigger lizard was approaching perhaps? As he looked into the trees with confusion and interest, suddenly the girl approached him, asking for help to escape from whatever was coming.
“I… Uhh…”
It felt kind of odd really, being asked for help when more likely than not he should have been the one getting help. That wasn’t him being selfish, more just negative about his own wellbeing and happiness. He fought his confusion and awkwardness to find some words, to produce a coherent sentence which wouldn’t make him seem at all weird or creepy.
“W-What?”
Oh dammit, what do you mean what do you mean?! There’s a big scary monster and a girl wants to get away from it. How hard is that to understand? Kid cleared his head slightly, shaking a little bit and trying to figure things out. This is what happens when you leave a socially awkward teen to his own devices for a while. Reconsidering his words, eventually he managed:
“Ok, l-lets go then”
A part of him wanted to see what she was scared of, but at the same time, the safety of others added up to much more than beating up a few oversized lizards or whatever. Besides, it could have been a swarm of the little ones which he didn’t particularly want to deal with. They were quick and could probably nip away at his skin rather easily till he was out of fuel. Looking down, he noticed the wound had already begun to seal up, only a slither of chocolate left running down his leg towards his walking boot.
But one question still remained, why did this girl want him to help when she could just made her own way? Well, two actually. Where was she headed? Had she got separated from her friends or family, or perhaps she had a little set up somewhere nearby. He hadn’t seen much of the island, waking up pretty much engulfed by the trees already, so he had no idea if anywhere here was very habitable. He had a feeling it would be, seeing as there was a lot of plantlife, which surely some of it would be edible. And the little lizards could probably be eaten too. Perhaps that’s what the girl was doing, collecting food. But, surely she’d be armed? So many questions, instead of just one like he’d initially thought.
Morose
Morose in hot weather
Jungle Ambience
Jungle View
Morose's moments of fond recollection were fleeting, but as the group moved deeper into the dark jungle, there was reprieve. While the gloom would have fit Morose's mood perfectly, there were shafts of light that broke through the thick canopy of leaves to illuminate him and cause his pants to sparkle. Morose closed his eyes, seemingly savoring the moment and smiling briefly as he had when he was talking with one of the crew about his cooking. While the other men continued scavenging, Morose's sore mood faded away and was replaced by one that was more amicable. He took a deep breath and let it out evenly, the stress of the previous incident gone now.
That's when there was a flicker of motion that caught Morose's eye. It was hard to discern if it was a shadow, a leaf, or something else. The motion no longer occurred when Morose looked leaving him with nothing but a sense of unease which put him back on edge. Morose's eyes focused intently on the area he saw something. A few moments later he saw it again and this time could make out what it was. What they were.
"There are some dinosaurs stalking in the plants over there. If you don't want to wind of food, stay clear of there and keep a watch on your surroundings."
Morose's words seemed to startle some of the men, but otherwise they continued as they had been. Instead, Morose took it upon himself to investigate and deal with the beasts if need. Kitchen knives slid into the chef's hands as he approached at a casual and steady pace. One of the dinosaurs suddenly popped out of the leaves swinging its tail. It sat low to the ground, but it was wide and heavy looking for something of its size. It's body was several layers of jagged looking armor. Its tail was a studded club that it swung into things, damaging them. Morose backed up cautiously at seeing this. The beast stomped forward and clubbed a nearby tree with its tail as it called out in a big, deep sound.
"If you are the prehistoric version of a turtle, I bet you'll make an incredible soup..."
Jungle Hut
As Salas approached, the figure that disappeared into the hut slammed open the door and shouted,
"You! What are you doing outside?! It's time! It's coming! You, must, coming...I mean, come in! You must, come in, yes!"
It sounded like a woman though the figure's face was deep within the hood of her outfit made of various patches of dinosaur leather. She immediately turned back around and disappeared into the hut. The skull looking down on any visitor above the door was large and ominous. Inside, the hut smelled as one might imagine of earth, animal, and wood smoke. There was some additional fragrance in the air though its source was not obvious. Skulls, bones, pelts, and plants lined the interior of the building. In the middle of it all, there was what looked like a replica of the volcano range on the island. Made of dirt, mud, and color Salas had yet to see in coming here, it seemed significant. Several random pieces of wood, animal, and plant seemingly holding some sort of importance sat around the volcano model.
The woman continued to mutter to herself as she moved around the hut gathering and relocating things.
Studious Girl
Young Raptors
As Kid and the young woman quickly left the scene, it was quickly apparent to all that they were being pursued by sizable creatures choosing to remain out of sight. As scary as being unable to see them was, it was perhaps more nerving that they were actively choosing to remain hidden. The beasts clearly had the means to leap out and pounce the 2 who were fleeing at any moment, but they did not and a length of time passed like that...
Suddenly, a massive, fully grown Raptor leaped from the cover of the leaves through the air to attempt to pounce and/or claw at Kidd with its large, clawed toes.
Adult Raptor stats
The girl looked back to note the sudden squeal of the dinosaur leaping out at them, but she wasn't about to stop for anything as she turned back forward without breaking stride. Unfortunately for her, the moment she looked back was the moment a raptor laying in wait choose to leap out. She turned back in time to see its gaping jaws coming for her head...
Then a flaming rock fell from the sky, smashing into the raptor that would have attacked the girl. Pinned underneath the burning rock, the dinosaur was still in shock as to what just happened as it died. The girl was also surprised, but she quickly ran around the fallen rock and kept going. A smokey flaming trail was carved through the canopy making where the flaming rock had come from an obvious guess.
The stranger possessed a somewhat surprisingly feminine voice, and quite urgently insisted that Salasais and his party come into the hut to avoid some form of impending disaster. If it was some kind of trap, he would deal with that later, for now it would seem prudent to deal with the most immediate threat. He motioned to his followers to hurry into the hut behind him and stepped inside briskly. It smelled wild, having an earthen quality that could only come from a shelter built in places that men feared to tame. It was nostalgic, really.
Looking around, The Shaman felt somewhat at home inside this place. The presence of so many plant and animal products and the earthen map on the ground. It seemed like a place that he would resonate with strongly if he were more in tune with the spirit world, but there would again be time for wonder when the danger was past. "Salasais appreciates your hospitality, but We must ask: what is coming here that you fear so? And if it is so terrifying then how does this shelter protect us from it?"
A bristling could be felt in salas' skin as he anticipated the coming of whatever they meant to hide from. More importantly, he worried about the group that was with Morose, if not so much about Morose himself. He needed to know what was coming and if it could be possible to protect his allies from it. The Chef could likely take care of himself, but the crew could not afford to keep losing its landing parties as it had been lately. "We have friends remaining outside, Salasais may need to warn them if the threat is as grave as you imply. We feel there is much to discuss between us, but you will pardon Salasais if he is preoccupied with the safety of his companions."
Suddenly, the girl began moving, leaving Kid stood there for a moment before beginning to run with her, quickly catching up. Despite being injured and rather… Frail looking, she was pretty quick, which he was sure was down to the panic of it all. As his feet hit the jungle floor, he couldn’t help but begin to panic a little bit himself, not because of the whole massive lizard probably chasing them, but instead because a place like this would be crawling with insects. He hadn’t seen any yet… But soon he would and he’d begin to panic. Readying his arm slightly, he got ready to release some hot chocolate from the thrower built into his arm, if he needed to, not yet transforming it.
Suddenly the creature making such noise screeched, leaping out from behind them and charging towards Kid, attempting to claw at him. His heart sunk as he watched the oversized lizard approach him at high speeds, getting ready to rip him open. He didn’t know if it could get through his rather solid body, but it could certainly ruin his clothing. Stepping back as it moved in, he raised his forearms to block the attack, his false skin tearing slightly and causing chocolate to trickle out.
Suddenly realising that the girl was now on her own, he turned briefly before the lizard got another chance to attack, only then realising that she herself was under attack. As she neared its maw, something… Odd happened. From the sky a flaming rock of death crashed into the creature, flattening it and cooking it too, leaving a smouldering heap of rock and meat in front of the girl who seemed to panic and then rush off. Kid was too stunned to act for a moment, before breaking into a run to catch back up to her, ignoring the fact he was now being chased down again.
“W-what was that?”
He questioned her, hoping she knew. Sure, she seemed surprised, but not as confused as he’d expect from someone almost struck by a meteorite… Or perhaps not a meteorite but… He wracked his brain for a moment before realising what it could have been. The rumbling he’d heard in the distance before, he knew he’d heard some more… Could it be that they had volcanoes here?! He’d read about them in a book back on Loguetown in the old man’s attic, and although he couldn’t remember much, he’d heard of a few islands with them, including a jungle like one. Was this it then?
The teen didn’t have much time to think however, as he could hear screeching behind him, and as he followed along close to the girl he noticed the lizard quickly approaching again. He gritted his teeth slightly, attempting to think of a way to get rid of it before eventually just resorting to the stuff he knew.
“Keep back, this… It… One second”
He attempted, before basically giving up and turning on his heels, raising his fist and bringing it crashing forwards towards the creature as it approached. As it neared, its maw opened and quickly, almost before he knew it the teen had his arm in the creature’s mouth, about to be bitten down on.
He huffed slightly, having expected nothing more than simple repetition from a simple creature. They all seemed to do the same in the end. As his hand approached the back of its mouth, suddenly the creature screeched in pain, backing up slightly. Upon inspection, a red and white striped weapon was now jammed in the back of the lizards throat, causing it to continuously choke and growl in an attempt to get the blade like object out. A quick punch to the side of the head caused it to stumble, and now Kid could escape, quickly catching up to the girl.
