"Just peach."

"Okay, I'll take a peach juice, then," Chris said. The doctor was hoping for some apple or maybe orange juice, but the waiter gave her such a horrified look when she brought them up, she decided to keep her mouth shut. The merchants she rode with weren't kidding when they said this island was obsessed with the fruit.

It was going to be a couple of days until her ship was restocked and ready to go, so Chris had decided to take a stroll around town. She eventually got really thirsty and stopped in a cozy-looking cafe, which brought up the earlier exchange. If anything, the peach-shaped chairs, tables, and menus should have tipped her off.

"I wonder if these peaches have any special medicinal properties," the doctor thought. As the main reason for her journey was researching new kinds of medicine, and she already used fruits and vegetables, this island was very interesting. Surely, the peaches they planted there weren't your run-of-the-mill kind found everywhere else. The only thing she needed to figure out was a way to get some good samples to examine. The market would be a good place to start, at least.

As one might expect, Shipney's market was filled with, you guessed it, peach vendors. They were obviously selling other kinds of fruit as well, but those vendors got sideways glances by more than a handful of people that passed them by. What caught the doctor's attention, however, was a piece of paper stuck on most walls across the street.

Wanted
Dead or Alive
Apple Scott
::beli:: 100,000
For the crime of grafting apricot branches on the island's peach trees.

Chris did a double-take and read the poster a second time to confirm the crime was actually what she thought it was. Her first reaction was to dismiss it as a joke, but she remembered which island she was in. The picture depicted a gruff-looking man with orange hair and a dark brown beard, very much similar to the colors of an apricot and its core. He was certainly a brave man to do what he did on this island.

"Maybe the farmers will take a liking to me if I help bring this man in," Chris thought.

The doctor approached a merchant and casually picked up one of the peaches he had for sale. She was used to much bigger fruit in her homeland, but this one was much smoother than any peach she'd touched before; it was definitely worth investigating for her medicine.

"So, that Scott guy, huh? Can't believe someone would want to have less of these wonderful peaches around," Chris said. The old man looked visibly annoyed at the mere mention of Scott's name, but as soon as the subject turned to his product, his face lit up like a candle.

"Hahah, you like our peaches, young lady? You have good taste for a traveler; don't think you're from around here, right? Yeah, Apple Scott is a really despicable fella, let me tell you that. He went around and messed with as many trees as he could before we caught wind of his antics. Unfortunately, the farmers aren't exactly the richest people around and the marines don't consider him a big threat, so his bounty is practically nil. No bounty, no bounty hunters after him, so he's still on the run. But why are you asking, missy?" the merchant said.

Chris shrugged and put the peach down. "I was just a little curious. You have so many of the guy's posters up one can't help but wonder, you know?" she lied. The truth was, she was very much interested in this criminal and his grafting. Not because it was anything unusual, but because it was practically guaranteed to earn her good favors with the island's farmers and some pocket change for the road.

"I think I'll ask around a little more first. All I know about this 'Apple Scott' is his face and his apparent love for apricots. Some insight on his motive might help me out," the doctor thought.

The merchants were all pretty happy to badmouth Apple Scott as long as Chris praised the island's peaches even a little. Not much was known about him, but she could gather a few pieces of info that looked useful.

One, he was not a native. That one was almost obvious since "No man born here could possibly like apricots more than peaches," one middle-aged lady claimed. It also explained how he got his hands on apricot seeds since the island itself had zero; he had to bring them in from somewhere else.

Two, he never went back to the same place twice. As soon as he was done grafting a branch, he completely disappeared from said field. That also meant he did not want the apricots for himself, rather, he just wanted the island to have them. That still didn't explain his motive other than trouble-making, though.

Three, he only operated during the day. Apparently, his bright hair stood out so much in the night, he had no choice but to try to be as inconspicuous as possible when a farmer was tending to a remote area of their field. This one seemed to be the most useful by far and also the one that opened up the most questions. Why didn't he just wear a hat and move in the night, for instance?

"Alright, I think that's enough for now," Chris mumbled to herself. She was already forming a plan in her head, but she needed a farmer's cooperation to make it work. Since Scott never stroke twice, she needed to hide somewhere he hadn't been to yet and wait for him to show up. And for that to work, she'd need to ask the farmer for permission and have him be somewhere far away from her hiding spot so Scott would actually show up.

"This plan is so simple I can't really imagine it will work. Someone else would have thought of it before me, right? Let's give it a go anyway," the doctor thought.

Roughly an hour later, Chris still hadn't managed to find a farmer whose field hadn't suffered at the hands of Apple Scott. Most merchants didn't know the details of the people who sold to them and those who did know were of no help. Apparently, a single tree was all it took for Scott to disappear and since the fields were rather big, the farmers couldn't protect everything at once.

As she was about to give up hope, the doctor noticed a merchant with a "100% guaranteed peaches" sign next to his stock. He was much younger than most others, around his early thirties, and looked rather proud whenever anyone bought his fruit. The sight intrigued the young woman so she approached the merchant.

"Hey there, you have quite the interesting sign here. How are your peaches '100% guaranteed' that others aren't?" Chris asked. The young man looked up to her and grinned from ear to ear with what could only be described as the smuggest face she had encountered in her life.

"You're curious too, aren't you? Well, miss, my field is the only one that Apple Scott absolutely, positively, never laid his hands on. Now, I'm not gonna go as far as claim that I care for it that much more than the other farmers, but it's smaller and easier to keep track of. So that pesky criminal never got the chance to give me the slip, get it? My peaches are absolutely, positively, peaches, with a capital P. No apricots slipped in here, no, miss," the farmer replied.

"Oho?" Chris couldn't help but let a small smile appear on her face. Although it took her a bit, she finally found someone who met the criteria for her plan to be set in motion. Moreover, he looked like a pretty passionate fellow and hated Apple Scott as much as everyone else in the island; getting his help wouldn't be too hard.

"I just need to suggest the matter as casually as possible and I'm set."

"You know, being the only one who's managed to avoid Apple Scott is definitely commendable, but I wouldn't really call it a huge achievement. There's something else that would earn you far more recognition in the community," Chris said. The merchant looked a little peeved at his achievement being downplayed, but he easily kept his calm.

"Something better than being the farmer with the purest peaches in the island? I can't imagine anything better than that, but shoot: what are you suggesting?" he said.

"Simple: be the one who captures Apple Scott. Or at the very least, one of the people to. Your field is the only one he hasn't been to yet, right? It's the perfect bait to lure Scott in and capture him once and for all. You only need to pretend to leave it unattended for a bit, then ambush him as soon as he shows up. He's been able to escape because no one knew where he could strike next, but you'd be the one with the upper hand this time," Chris suggested.

The farmer mulled the suggestion over for a bit, but the doctor had a feeling he was going to agree without much thought. His love for peaches was as big as anyone else's on the island, so their sworn enemy was someone he definitely wanted to see punished.

"Your plan is not half bad, but can you be absolutely, positively, sure it will work? Honestly, it sounds a little too simple, you know? I'm sure other people have already tried it and failed," he said.

"It's not as guaranteed as the peaches you sell, but it has another upside: zero risk. Think about it, if Scott doesn't show up, do you really lose anything? We wouldn't get to catch him, but nothing would happen to your peach trees either. And I'd be the one doing the stake out too, so you won't get tired either," Chris said.

"The plan is flawless, if I do say so myself. Alright, it's not perfect, but it could work," she thought.

The merchant spent a few minutes mumbling to himself and thinking every possibility over. No matter how he span it, there were no downsides for him, which brought up an interesting question.

"What do you have to gain from all this, then? Is it really just the bounty? I somehow doubt you'd go to all this trouble for the reward they're offering. You said no one has been able to catch Scott because they didn't know where he would strike next, but it's more because bounty hunters didn't want to bother for such a small bounty," the farmer said. Chris was a little surprised at how thorough he was, but that kind of explained how he managed to keep Scott away when everyone else on the island couldn't.

"I'm glad you asked. I was actually hoping to get some peaches fresh out from the tree from you; your best ones, if you wouldn't mind. I have some personal research I want to do with them and only the very best will do," the doctor replied. The moment the word 'best' left her lips, the farmer erupted into laughter.

"The very best, you say? You're right, my peaches are absolutely, positively, the best. I like the cut of your jib, miss, you can count me in in this silly little plan of yours. I don't believe we ever introduced ourselves, did we? I'm Preach, best and youngest farmer on the island. I only have a small piece of land right now, but just you wait," the man said.

"I'm Chris, traveling doctor and I guess, as of now, bounty hunter. The medicine I make is nothing special right now, but I'll travel all around the sea and learn as much as I can. Pleased to meet you, Preach," the doctor replied and offer her hand, which the farmer firmly grasped for a handshake. His grip alone showed just how passionate he was about his work.

"I just need to think of the details now," the doctor thought.

The two wannabe captors decided to meet the next day on Preach's field. He gave Chris directions and recommended an inn for her to stay the night, then went back to his job. "Peaches ain't gonna sell themselves, and I'm still too new for the merchants to want to buy my stuff," he said. The doctor worked out a few details in her head before going to sleep, then headed over to the field as instructed.

Just like Preach said, it was a relatively small piece of land. Chris was used to much bigger trees than those, as well as vast expanses of land you couldn't hope to traverse in a single day. In contrast, Preach's land was small enough you could look at everything standing on any single point of the field. No man could hope to sneak up on him when he had his eye on everything at all times.

"Good morning, doctor, did you sleep well?" Preach asked half-jokingly. "I did what you asked yesterday and got some grass on an old tarp of mine. If you cover yourself with it, no one should be able to tell you're there from far away. I'm ready whenever you are," Preach said.

Chris picked up the tarp and gave it a quick look. There were patches of grass and dirt stuck all over it to make for pretty decent camouflage. Her plan was simple: hide under the tarp and observe the field while Preach pretends to leave on some business or other. He made sure to inform other farmers and merchants he was going to leave the field unattended, so Apple Scott should have caught wind of the news. After all, this was the only place left for him to target.

"I think we're good to go. I'll go hide somewhere you can't spot me and give you the signal when Scott shows up. It's a pretty quiet day, so you should be able to hear me even from afar," Chris said.

"I just hope this tarp isn't as uncomfortable as it looks," she thought.

A few minutes after Chris and Preach split up, the doctor found herself an adequate distance from the peach field, covered with their impromptu camouflage "device". The farmer gave her the okay, which meant she was hidden well enough for anyone who wasn't actively looking for her to miss her. As per their plan, he left the field completely to attend his "business" and set the bait in place for the infamous Scott to bite.

"I can't take any more of this..." Chris thought. Several hours had passed since she first started the stake-out, and her body was starting to reach its limit. The tarp was hot, the sun was making it worse, it was humid, and she had to use the bathroom. She knew patience was the key to this mission, but only now did she realize why people normally did this in pairs. Her fatigue was getting to her so much that her vision was starting to get blurry; it even looked like the ground itself was moving. The doctor wiped her eyes on a napkin a few times to clear them, but that didn't seem to fix things.

"Wait a minute... Is the ground actually moving? Could this be what I think it is?" she wondered. Chris was, in fact, not hallucinating. The ground near the peach trees was slowly moving in a wave-like fashion towards them. It was as if a giant earth-colored worm was trying to get closer to them really, really slowly. The bizarre phenomenon continued for several minutes until the disturbance arrived next to one of the outer trees. Chris couldn't see it properly from a distance, but there was a small bump rising from the ground in a similar fashion to her disguise.

A hand slowly reached out from the ground and grabbed hold of what seemed like a light green cape. In one swift motion, it uncovered the person responsible for making the doctor question her sanity. It was none other than Apple Scott, lying down on the ground in an outfit made to blend in with the grass. He'd crawled all the way there under his own disguise to avoid any farmer's watchful eyes and was now ready to start on his grafting.

"That explains how he got away so far. Alright, it's time to get this show on the road," Chris thought.

"Stop right there, criminal scum!"

Chris got out of the tarp and dramatically tossed it away to reveal herself to Apple Scott. The man jumped up in shock and immediately turned around to face his would-be captor only to laugh in the doctor's face.

"You had me scared for a second there, lass, I thought it was going to be a big group or something. You know I can just run away from here, right?" Scott said. A valid point, but that would only be true...

"If I was alone, you might have a point. But you know, I'm not that dumb," Chris said. She paused for a second to take a deep breath, then shouted at the top of her lungs: "Hey, Preach, he's here!" The sound carried through the plains and the sound of running could be heard a few seconds later. The farmer was coming over from the direction of the city, leaving the ocean as the only place left for Scott to run to.

"Okay, I'll admit you have a decent plan, but I'm not about to go down without a fight! I'll just knock you out and make a run for it before your friend arrives!" Scott shouted before starting to dash over to Chris. The man was relatively lean, as he should be to move as stealthily as he did before, and pretty quick on his feet. He wasn't carrying anything that looked like a weapon and only clenched his right fist in preparation. The doctor fumbled around in her coat a bit and prepared a few drugs she could use to help her out, though one of them was probably going to be enough.

As soon as Scott got next to Chris, he swung down his fist to hit her head, but her reflexes let her dodge such a straightforward attack easily. In the brief opening created after his attack, she pulled out a small vial with a purple liquid and uncorked it near his face. A tiny cloud exited the bottle and rose up to the criminal's nose who was to close to avoid inhaling it. The man clicked his tongue and tried to use his left hand to grab Chris' own, but his movements were rather sluggish and uncoordinated. The drug had taken effect immediately and made him drowsy enough to reduce his speed by a fair amount.

"I never thought this anesthetic prototype could be useful like this," she thought.

Scott was trying his best to hit Chris, but his body wasn't responding the way he wanted it to. It took his best effort just to stay standing but his best wasn't going to cut it. The doctor moved her leg behind his and pulled it backwards while at the same time pushing his chest, ultimately making the man fall on his back. As a last attempt, he reached out to take her down with him, but his hand couldn't make it in time. It was a little strange to think a man like him had a bounty on his head when he couldn't even put up a fight. A farmer might have better chances winning than him.

Scott's body hit the ground with a light thud, followed by Chris restraining his arms as best she could. A tarp didn't make for a particularly good restraint, but it'd have to do until Preach got there. The doctor sat down next to them man and let out a short sigh of relief.

"So, can you tell me why you did all this? Is there some kind of grand plan behind your vandalism? Perhaps your apricots are the secret medicine against some kind of disease? They're a good source of vitamin? Surely you didn't do all this for no reason, and you don't seem like a bad person either," she asked. The criminal struggled a bit at first, but realized he no longer had enough time to get out of there and resigned to his fate.

"It's weird," he said.

"Huh?"

"It's weird! You should understand if you're not from this island. You're not, are you? Why is everyone so obsessed with peaches? Why do they ban all other stone fruit? Why did I get a bounty for something as mundane as this? Don't you agree with me? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Every last person on this island talks about peaches like they're a religion or some shit. I simply wanted to show them other stone fruit aren't so bad. If they tried them maybe they'd come to see things my way even a little..." Scott said.

"It is weird, isn't it?" the doctor thought.

Chris scratched her head a bit while she tried to find the right words. Yes, it was weird. She thought the same thing as soon as she stepped foot on this island. The scenery, the menus, the conversations, even the weather felt like it revolved around peaches. She simply went with the flow and didn't think to question the way of the land, but Scott was completely right in his outburst. Why were peaches so highly thought of? Now, the doctor wasn't about to try and debate the island's fanatics, but a simple explanation would do. There was surely some history behind it all, but why did it still stand to this day? Somehow, it felt like trying to find out might get her into trouble.

"Listen here. I know exactly how you feel because I'm also an outsider like you. However, vandalizing people's property isn't going to solve anything. I'm sure you tried to talk to them about it at first, but you should have backed down when that didn't work. Some battles aren't meant to be won, walking away is the only thing you can do. If you can't agree with the way people see things here, you can just go to another island. You're not a native, that shouldn't be a problem, right? Though I guess it's a little too late now..." the woman said.

Scott remained quiet for a few seconds and averted his gaze, but eventually spoke up. "I guess you're right..."

"By the way, is it true that you never moved during the night because your hair stands out too much?" she asked out of curiosity.

"What? Who told you that? No, it's because it's too dark to properly graft branches. I can't exactly go around carrying a torch with me when I'm trying to be stealthy, you know? If it really was my hair, couldn't I just wear a hat or something?" Scott replied.

"You're right, that makes sense," Chris awkwardly laughed. Looks like all information wasn't reliable.

"I knew there was something wrong about the hair theory. I even came up with the same idea about the hat. We might have been able to become friends if it weren't for this whole... bounty thing," she thought.

"You know, I have one last question. Didn't you give up a little too easily? You could have tried to wrestle your way out, or maybe toss some dirt in my eyes. I don't know, there is probably something you could have done to make my job harder. I'm not exactly a professional bounty hunter or anything, I somehow doubt I'm that strong of an opponent," Chris asked.

Scott turned his eyes to the sky and hesitantly opened his mouth to reply. "I guess I was a little tired. I was planning on turning myself in after I was finished anyway, so this just sped things up a but. And the reason I didn't really fight is because I'm no criminal. I'd be inclined to call this a huge misunderstanding, but I doubt the people here would listen. I just hope my sentence isn't going to be anything too severe," he said. The doctor couldn't help but feel a little bad for the man possibly getting imprisoned for what could pass as a prank back home, but those were the rules. The thought of letting him go crossed her head a couple of times, but she had her own interests to think of too.

Farmer Preach showed up after what felt like an incredibly long amount of time. He was out of breath, covered in dirt, and overly excited to look at the confined Scott on the ground. "You actually caught him! I mean, I knew I could absolutely, positively, do it myself, but good job there, Chrissy. Sorry I'm late, I went a little too far and then a few other things happened and I got delayed. Good thing you didn't need my help after all, huh?" Preach said. Chris really wanted to ask what on earth could have possibly went on in an empty field, but the answer was probably going to be too dumb for her liking.

"Did he fall in a hole or something?" she wondered.

With Preach's arrival, the last piece of the plan was in place. All they needed to do now was turn Apple Scott in and this whole farce would be over. Chris still had trouble stomaching the events of the last two days. If someone told her she'd be working with a farmer to catch a rogue tree-grafter for the bounty on his head and premium peaches, she wouldn't even reply to them.

Since Scott had evidently given up, taking him to the marine barracks wasn't much of a challenge. What was harder than walking him there was keeping all the spectators away. Every last person in the street wanted to hear the story behind the capture of the "notorious criminal" Apple Scott, as they called him. The man in question looked more sad than angry at the treatment he was getting, but he made his bed and he was now going to sleep in it. The marines took him in and paid Chris the bounty in full, while several merchants and farmers showered her in gifts. Yes, the gifts were all peaches; do you even need to ask?

After the official business was over, the "amazing duo", as they were called, left for Preach's field to settle the deal between them. The farmer could hardly contain his excitement and basked in the compliments of his peers, possibly taking up more time than Chris' entire stakeout. It was a little annoying, but she let him have his moment. This was probably going to be the highlight of his life for the new few months, maybe years if nothing exciting happened.

"I wonder what I'm gonna do with all these peaches. Give them to the crew when I leave? No, they probably had their fill while they were here. Experiment on them? I'd like to use the fresh ones for that... I guess jam will do," Chris thought while waiting.

A few hours later, Chris and Preach managed to escape the crowd's clutches and finally arrived at his field. The doctor waited while he went around his trees and gathered what he deemed about a couple dozens of his best fruit and handed them over in a small, airtight barrel.

"Here you go, doctor. These are absolutely, positively, the best fruit you can find on this island as of this moment. Don't forget to name the new medicine you make with them after me!" the farmer said. His confidence that the fruit not only were the best but would certainly be useful in her research was remarkable as always. "Oh, that reminds me... Wait here a sec," he added before heading inside his house. A few seconds later, he came out with the weirdest fruit Chris had ever seen.

Its general shape resembled a peach somewhat, but it was pitch black and had small patterns that looked like crosses on it. At first, she thought it was someone's idea of a prank, but she could tell the fruit was definitely real after she touched it.

"This is... new. Didn't you say your field only has peaches in it? Where exactly did you grow this?" Chris asked.

"Didn't grow it," Preach shook his head, "it just appeared among the others one day. I figured someone was pulling a prank on me, but I thought I might keep it because it looks funny. Wanna take it along? You said you research all kinds of fruit, right? Come on, have a bite and tell me what it's like," he said before cutting a piece of the fruit off and shoving it into the doctor's mouth. Chris reflexively swallowed the black fruit and immediately wanted to throw up from the taste.

"This thing's awful! It's bitter, sour, and salty all at once! How can a fruit even taste like this? And when I say I research fruit I didn't mean I eat them! What if this thing was poisonous? I'll have to keep a close eye on my health for now," she said. "But thanks for giving it to me, I'll see if I can whip anything up from it. Goodbye, Preach, I hope your peaches are as good as you say they are."

The two of them shook hands and said their goodbyes before heading their separate ways. Preach went back to tending his field and Chris returned to her hotel room to work on her new bounty. No, not the one she got for turning Apple Scott in, the bounty of fresh fruit she got for her research.

"I really hope I don't get food poisoning from this, or even worse. The taste alone was basically telling me not to eat the damn thing. Why didn't he try it himself? I bet he just wanted to get rid of it. Anyway, back to work~ Today was an unexpected success."
