"There's options!" roared Uncarayne. "There always are! You've got to stop and think, Eve!" Of course she blurred and swept away in a bright flash and a loud clap, up and out of reach of the swing of his hammer. He dug his heels in and spun in a wide skidding arc to face her. "There's ways! There's - there's, oh, gods, Eve, false graves or - or -"

Ideas died in his throat as he watched her, high in the air, load the rifle and point it. At him, because that absolute idiot Jaron had told her to kill the prisoners or die trying, surely he had. "Eve, no," he said, but his words were lost in the pouring rain.

It was too wet to flatten onto the grass and the puddles forming around his feet, so he turned and ran, splashing through the puddles as crazy blues lines filled the area with psychedelic spiderwebs, anchored off of - oh, gods knew what, raindrops or whatever, and he had to stop and slide into the mud to avoid one that whizzed past his hat and left a smoking trail of singed hair behind him.

He rolled in the rain-churned mud and raised himself up to his knee. "There is no bigger picture, Eve!" he shouted up at her. "Look at them! Look at yourself!!" And then his hands came up, a crude ballista in them. Nothing like as fancy as Eve's, of course; his ammunition didn't have the power of a Logia behind it. But it wasn't the point to hurt her, just to bring her back down to earth.

Literally, and figuratively.

And if she didn't, he'd hidden a few little surprises in the shrapnel for her anyway.

He fired.

"Options?" she roared, as her momentum in the air began to peter out and the many little hands of gravity started to take grip again. "There isn't time to just sit and think or to dig graves! You think a psycho like Jaron will be happy with a set of crosses in the mud?!" Maybe it was because he hadn't talked to Jaron, hadn't heard that malice in his voice. Eve liked to think she wasn't so easily shaken, but that man's voice alone sent her skin writhing in both disgust and fear. It was a voice that made promises it most surely could keep, most surely had the power to keep. But no matter how despicable she may have found him, they simply didn't have the authority or the strength to deny him without sacrificing everything - and saving nothing, in the process.

God, it was bad enough the wedge he had now driven between them. Was there any coming back from this? Anyway they could repair the bridges she was burning? Eve was stupid or blind, she could see what she was doing, how it must look. She was looking at herself. In dismay, in disgust. But that didn't change anything. If Unca continued to stand by the little guy, he would die too, and Eve would not be able to save him. At least... at least like this, even if she couldn't save their friendship, she could at least stay the executioner's axe.

But it didn't feel like she was managing that, either. She watched him from those bullets, only for the pain in her chest to grow, like she had turned the rifle onto her own heart. her eyes widened at the realization she need't of bothered, since Unca had her covered. The mess of shrapnel blasted out towards her and her understanding of his tactic came too late. The shrapnel couldn't harm her, of course it couldn't. He must have known that. But that wasn't the trick at all. She caught sight of the little objects just as they began their awful chorus.

"Argh!" she screamed, throwing her hands to her ears as she and the rifle fell. Normally Eve was able to land as elegantly as any feline species, but with that terrible screeching eating up every iota of concentration, she instead thudded into the mud like a thunderstruck horse. Splashing and struggling to her feet, using a dirtied Quicksilver as a brace, she glared Unca's way. "Unca," she gasped, "please just let me do this. We don't have time, or options here. I know they don't deserve it. I know how awful this all is, I know, I know."

She flicked some of the mud away. Her body did not flicker or steam anymore. The rain splattered down on her and plastered her hair to her skin, but she couldn't hear its pattering. It simply felt like cold blood dribbling down her fingers. She briefly glanced over at the other fighting pair, clashing a little way away. The rest of the crew had dragged the prisoners away towards the ship and watched helplessly and confused. It was their heads on the line, too, if those orders weren't carried out. "I don't want to hurt you, or anyone else. But sometimes it's just... numbers. It's cold, it's mechanical, but the Marines'd collapse in on themselves otherwise. We can't save everyone, Unca. We just have to save as many as we can."

A soft glow enveloped her fist. It didn't spark violently like it had done. Even the storm knew tragedy when it saw it. "But if you won't stand down and save your own life..." There was a flash once more and Eve appeared by Unca's side, rifle swinging through the air. "...then I'll beat you down and save it for you!" Perhaps it would have been in their best interest to do otherwise, but Eve did not fire as the rifle stabbed at Unca's chest. She wasn't going to kill him over this.

The Headbutt was not an elegant move and neither was the most effective but it was the quickest move he could perform in his repertoire. His head rang with pain; dazing him as it did to Laxus. Yet Laxus didn’t take too kindly to his move and decided to engage himself too into some foot to foot combat. Giving out a good kick directed to his cheek as he staggered back; letting the momentum give him the distance needed for such a strike.

Had Jukei been not momentarily dazed, he would have easily blocked the strike with a kick of his own; which he reckoned was stronger yet his groggy reflexes were far too dulled for that as he stumbled forward. Saved by muscle memory; his hands came up into an X shape; taking the brunt of the kick into his tough arms. The impact of the kick starting pushing him back yet he was now back into full combat mode once again. Pushing the kick back with as much force as he could; he ducked and sent his foot sweeping against the leg Laxus balanced on; his hands above in case Laxus would drop his kick onto his head.

Unfortunately for Laxus, the kick he sends flying at Jukei’s chin is unable to hit the target as the young marine uses both his arms crossing and blocking the attack. With his head quite dizzy because of the injured nose more and also his position makes him balance also quite bad, he can’t do anything in regard of Jukei pushing his leg. It just fasten his fall on the ground and that’s not a trouble for Laxus as his plan is to fall on his back after sending the kick.

What’s troublesome for him is the leg sweep Jukei performs right after that, as his body still not completely fall and the sweep makes his body sway so his plan for falling his back and then using his spear to stab at Jukei can’t be performed.'Damn...', not only that, he also gets himself a little injured because his left shoulder that meets the ground first.

Knowing that his plan already falling, Laxus quickly rolls his body to the left while both his hands grab the spear parallel to his body. He does so in fear of another attack coming from Jukei as his position is inviting for an attack coming at him. After a few side full body rolls, with his body covered with muds as the ground is quite wet because of the rain, he stands up and readies his spear for an incoming attack.

"He'll have to take it if it's all he has!" shouted Uncarayne in return, fury and frustration mounting. "Not even Jaron would dig up graves for his satisfaction!!"

He would. Wouldn't he? It'd be just like him to do that. Uncarayne didn't know. But it surely took something to scare Eve that badly.

He watched as she fell into the mud, and he walked towards her. "We've time. He might be on the way, Eve, but we've got time, there's two of us, we can figure something out!" He bit his lip as she struggled up, leaning on her rifle; around them, pieces of shrapnel fell, along with the three little Mock Balls, spent and silent now. The prisoners were gone. It was just them now - them, and the other two going at it spear against fist.

"Like hell we can't save them all," he said, teeth gritted. "Look what we did at Las Arcadas. A Shichibukai, and we took her down without killing the innocent people in the building. No innocents lost - and these mightn't be innocents, but even Arcadia...!!"

He'd gotten in too close. Her fist lit up, and -

BOOM.

He stumbled back, coughing up pain. The rifle hung there in her hands, his skin still cold with its touch.

She hadn't fired, he thought, as he found his footing and planted a foot down firm in the mud. There's still hope. But she was fighting, still.

"You think you're saving me," he said slowly. "You know what, Eve? I'm saving you. I'm going to save you from this hopelessness!!" He walked towards her, hammer spinning. "There's another way, Eve, we just have to find it!"

And then he rushed her again, his hammers swinging out one after another: one that she would surely dodge, but one to catch her dodging. She couldn't run forever - could she?

Eve stood, breath coming in jagged bursts. The move hadn't even been all that tiring. All the same, the energy continued to drain out of her into a black void, being carried off by the icy rain falling from her skin. She took a few steps towards him and stopped. He had made a dear mistake in mentioning Las Arcadas. True, they had done good in the end. But to assume it had ended purely as a shining example of child-friendly heroism only showed just how ignorant he was. Her fist shook as she threatened to break her own fingers in their grip. "I don't think you saw the streets, Unca," she warbled, voice on the edge of cracking. "When she started firing that... that weapon. The fire from the sky... it wasn't just targeting us. It was targeting everything around us. There were bodies, Unca. So burnt you wouldn't be able to ID them even with dental." A thumb jabbed at her own aching chest and her expression exploded into rage. "I, personally, almost ripped that island apart with these goddamn 'powers,' even though we had Arcadia in custody! You have any idea how many people lost their homes? Their businesses, their livelihoods? And you better bloody believe that when I stood on top of that magnet, a few people got hurt or killed too!"

The frustration welled up, tore at her throat with barbed hooks. She stamped at the ground and sparks started to re-emerge from her body where they had been exiled somewhere deep inside. They lashed at the grass, just as Arcadia's weapon had lashed at the people of Las Arcadas. "We can't save everyone. And sometimes, to save the majority, we end up hurting the minority. We don't live in a perfect world, Unca, and you're being so freakin' naive trying to convince yourself otherwise!" Her nostrils flared, but she simply couldn't bring herself to see red and charge. Not against Unca. Surely not against him. But if he kept this up, there was little she could do to help him. He and Laxus would become the scapegoats and their punishment would be even worse. No- this was Jaron. He wouldn't have them punished; he'd force Eve to do it herself. She could tolerate hurting her friend, even if it was like punching a mirror. But to be forced to execute him? Though it was lost in the rain, Eve was certain she had begun to sweat, that her eyes dilated to unnatural levels. Unca needed to go down, to get thrown quietly in the brig before Jaron arrived. They both did, if they wanted anything resembling a chance.

But he denied her.

True to his ploy, Eve sidestepped the first easily enough but was caught off guard by the feint as she raised her rifle for another jab. The Tesla Guard, however, managed to just intercept the blow before she was thrown off her feet and sent sailing through the air for a good few hundred feet. The armour ate most of the impact, but it didn't stop her arm from going numb as her nerves seized up after the shock. All the same, her balance and reflexes were as sharp as the claws of Unca's hammers and the deadarm didn't put her off entirely. Before her body skid to a grinding halt in the mud, she spun in the air and snapped her rifle forward, blasting forth a single super-charged shot that traced her flight straight back to the source.

It was immediately followed by dread and panic. her arm had moved by itself. The electricity had flowed of its own violation. A soldiers reflexes had settled into her brain and taken over the wheel, for just a second. But that was all it took for her to launch a no-bars shot at her comrade.

The sweep had sent Laxus plummeting down onto his shoulder; as he crashed among the puddles that were forming amongst the rigging, thanks to the rain that was forming. Jukei stood up as Laxus reached for his spear; ready to nimbly move away and create distance between them. Blood seemed to haemorrhage as it trickled out of Jukei’s flesh wound and mixed along with the pouring rain; visibility now blurred by the raindrops instead of the ringing in the combatant’s heads.

As soon as Laxus took hold of his spear and started creating distance between him and Jukei through rolling; he broke into a sprint towards him. A loud shot rang out; sending Jukei down as he instinctively dodged whatever it was; his mind quickly jumping to the conclusion that the spearman had a pistol hidden on himself and gave off a shot. As he slides along the deck; Jukei extends his leg forwards; turning his gaff into a sliding tackle to intersect Laxus mid-roll.

Getting himself on his feet, the first thing Laxus sees is a silhouette of a person charging at him. He can’t see clearly cause all of the mud that covers his face. Not only that, the rain also helps in reducing his eyesight quite badly. He also unable to use his ears to help him in perceiving the opponent as the loud sound of an explosion that comes continuously from the fight of the two higher marine officer. That’s why, it can be said that he’s in a quite a bad situation at the moment.

But he doesn’t become confused as the most important thing he learns in all of his life experience is to stay as calm as possible, moreover when he’s in a fight. That’s why, the first thing he does at that moment is to take a quick deep breath to ease himself. Even though the most important thing after that is to clear his vision, but since he doesn’t have the spare time as someone already charging at him. He chooses to jump to the left as to avoid the one charging at him. After that he uses the rain water and his spare hand that doesn’t hold the spear to swipe his face and clear his vision.

Right when his vision is back, he then stabs using his spear at Jukei who is on the ground after performing a sliding attack at him. He uses all the power he has and ignoring any deffence. He realises that the longer the fight the worst it will be for him and the commodore, since the one ordering the pointless massacre of the thieves family is going nearer and nearer.

"I -!!!" he shouted, but he didn't continue, frustration swallowing up his words. Couldn't she see? She said it herself. Arcadia had begun the messy business of hurting the civilians, and not even in the name of justice, and Eve... Collateral damage. Which was true; but collateral damage in the pursuit of justice, and that was different from cold-blooded execution of people who'd not even done all that much wrong. But the words and sentences drowned in a frustrated shout as his hammers swung, and he could only hope Eve felt his message in his blows.

A most ineloquent way, but - he didn't know what he could say to her now, when she was screaming and crying in the rain, in the brief bursts of steam whenever the rain touched her arcing sparks.

So the first hammer swung, and she sidestepped right into the second. Uncarayne's lips twisted sourly, pulling the force of the hammer even as it connected, but that didn't mean he couldn't see the look in her eyes before she was thrown into the air, far away from him. He sagged back. "It's - you're not wrong," he shouted after her, frustrated, almost wanting to cry himself, and wouldn't that make a fine sight. Two Marines crying while they exchanged blows and harsh words, and all over a small family of the pettiest of thieves. And to distract himself he ran towards her. "But there's a difference - you didn't mean to, then, you don't mean to, now, do you -"

She landed, on her feet of course, and he almost sighed with relief that he hadn't hurt her... and then, even while skidding, the rifle pointed up and flashed. He spun with the impact, roaring something incoherent, barely audible to himself over the sizzle and the hot pounding blood in his ears, ending in a clumsy splash in the mud as he fell to his knees to find his balance. He touched himself where it hurt in that strange detached numb way, and his hand came up red.

Eve, he thought, biting his lip hard enough to distract himself. It wasn't a big hindrance, not yet, wouldn't be with the ship so near with its medics. But it hurt all the same, all the more for it being Eve. He stood up, one hand pressed to the wound to stanch the flow, but the other pulled together, makeshift and clumsy, his battlesuit; and then he lumbered at top speed towards her, his hammers aiming now for her rifle rather than for her...

She had shot him. She had really shot him. It was the sin of routine, habit, reflex - that awful primordial need to survive hard coded into each and every one of them. Maybe this entire incident was born of the very same instinctual chains. Slowly, she picked herself up from the ground, filthy and bloody, and slouched as the rain pounded her shoulders. She whispered some apology, far too quiet to be heard over the storm. The cold didn't, couldn't, bother her but all the same she felt numb to the core. Was there any enemy worse than a friend? It made all the past scars and struggles seem so superficial. Blood clotted and cuts knitted over, even rage and loathing subsided. But the injuries sustained on that grassy little plain, in the rain and mud, went far deeper than anything else she had experienced.

Did he feel the same? Maybe. Like everything else, the rain washed tears away. Blood, filth, and friendship. Every droplet beat at her skin, seeking to purify her of all the bad and all the good. "Do you remember, Unca, in Las Arcadas," she said, murmured really. She didn't know if he could hear it. It wasn't really intended for him either way.

He began to weave the magic of his craft, armored himself up, and charged. Eve stood, waiting at his sped toward her and time slowed. "We have to be the wall," she whispered. "Just like the Redline. Even if that means a few get smashed by the rocks at our feet." From an idle stance she moved, shifted her center of gravity and aimed with her left thumb at the bounding mass of metal and wood. Somewhere within, was Unca. Her arm coiled back.

"We can't for a second bend down to help them. We have to stand tall and strong." She saw the great arms rise, hammers ready. They'd crush her into an early grave if she let them. It was an option, but not before she'd delivered her own hammer blow. Electricity flowed and buzzed along her rifle. "Tall and strong. Always."

The beast pounced and was upon her, the hammers descended, she pushed her rifle forward and twisted it with all her might. The world erupted in a mighty clash as the hammers found their mark. Could she have dodged them? Probably. It didn't even look like he was aiming for her, specifically, but her weapon. But all the same she moved in to intercept them with her body. Even if his intention was in the right place, if it was a kindness even, she wasn't going to let this end so easily.

The hammers, of course, hurt. There was blood, probably some screaming or grunting. Everything tumbled and very briefly went dark and next Eve opened her eyes she was on the floor, gazing up at the sky as the rain fell and fell. Gradually, she picked herself up, settled onto her knees and clumsily reached for her rifle lying nearby, but hesitated at picking it up. She didn't want to. Something felt dirty - dirty beyond the mud. She didn't know if it was her or the weapon. So instead she knelt there. A great white caught her eye - approaching the coast was a ship cleaving its way through the waves. Jaron, of course.

She smiled, sadly. "Looks like you win, Unca." Time was up. Out came the guillotine. The only choice now was to except it, or continue fighting to the very bitter end. Fighting, that is, together. Slowly, she pulled off and folded the coat which for so long had sat comfortably and proudly on her shoulders. Gently, she placed it on the ground in front of her and summoned the courage to scoop up her rifle. As the ship began to dock, she could already hear the furious roars of a monster.

Eve sighed and walked to her friend, offered a lightning free hand. A hand of flesh and blood. "Don't say I didn't warn you." It was an attempt at a joke, and though she felt it fall a little flat, she still managed to smile a little harder.

Turning to face the oncoming ship, she clicked her gun's hammer back and stood, tall and strong.

Laxus caught on quickly on what he was planning to and quickly; got up, delivering a possibly fatal strike towards Jukei. He was in no position to defend himself, as the trajectory of the attack and the position he was on made such a quick manoeuvre impossible as he slid through the slippery and muddy planks. Still; he did his best to minimise the impact of such strike, leaning heavily on his right side. The spear pierced into his left bicep; making it through completely through but thankfully, maybe thanks to the density of his muscle; stopped inches from his ribs. Or maybe it was just luck. Still; Jukei wasn't really mindful of what had just happened.

Pain flared through Jukei’s arm; as the spear had hit a tender spot. Yet; he was not going to give up just yet. As blood flowed and mixed into the puddles underfoot, Jukei shot a kick towards Laxus’s chin with both legs; putting every ounce of momentum and strength into it. He knew that unless the bleeding stopped soon; he was going to be fighting for much longer.

Laxus gambles by attacking his opponent with everything he has been working quite well as the spear clearly struck its target. It clearly enters the body of Jukei right to his left chest. But maybe because of all that was happening before reducing his stamina or his injured face makes him unable to strike properly or even because of the one he sends his spear to is part of the marine, the strike is unable to do its job properly and just stops after the spears tip enters Jukei flesh for an inch not even hitting the ribs.

Because of that, the young marine is able to use the opening of that attack and sends a kick while Laxus is without any defense. The kick flies beautifully and lands right at Laxus chin. It is actually not that hard of a kick, possibly because of Jukei’s was injured, but it hit the chin perfectly and sends a jolt of shock right to Laxus brain. And with his stamina reduced and he already fairly damaged on his nose where it also quite influences his consciousness, the kick makes him unconscious right away. Laxus loosens his grip on his spear and then falls on his back without any consciousness left. Don’t know when, but when he wakes up everything will be over.

In the moments before he struck her rifle the world slowed down. She was talking to herself, saying... something. Too quiet, too low for him to make out; the suit lenses were too streaked with rain, and his own vision too tunnelled by pain, for him to understand. In any event, he supposed in a way, it didn't really matter. He was already upon her, her rifle raised again in - in proper, real self-defense, this time, and his hammer shrieking audible even through the thick wood-and-metal shell.

Two impacts sounded so close together they were probably one. Like a heartbeat. Thump-thump.

Thump-thump.

Thump-thump. Tap. Tap.

That was new. He realised he was standing in the field, the top and front of his suit blown wide open by the force of her last attack. The rain stung on his skin, where chips and metal-strips had scraped him; the edges of the suit, where it had been torn, were still slightly caved in. "She sure didn't go easy on me, huh," he murmured to the suit, and slowly clicked the buckles open to fall on his hands and knees in the mud. "Ow," he said, wincing as he stood up and shook himself slowly. Mud fell off of his hands and forearms. He took a slow, unsteady step.

There she was on the ground, her weapon less than a step away. It didn't look that bad; the electricity she'd pushed through it must have protected it. He'd have offered to repair it, anyway, later, if they'd gotten out of things. One step towards... whatever. Were they still friends?

She stirred, sat up. He stood there, looking at her. He turned and looked away at the thing she was looking at... A ship, its great sails piercing the rain like a shark's fin. "So he's here," he said, slowly. Tiredly, as he watched her put her Marine-cloak away. So that was that, then.

"I won't say you didn't warn me," he said, as he took her hand and gave it a shake. He gave her a grin to match her smile. He shrugged, and with his other hand he took off his Marine cap and flicked it into the distance, at the oncoming ship. His coat had disappeared somewhere in the midst of the fight, he didn't know when exactly. "We'll save the new kid, at least, won't we, Eve?"
