To be summarily executed,

immediately.

Eve loudly drummed pale knuckles over the table and letter she was curled over. Behind her, sitting tightly restrained in the cool grass of the plains by which they were docked, was a set of criminals. Criminals only in the most loose sense of the term; really nothing more than a poor family that had stolen a little money from a passenger ship and fled. They had the worst luck to steal from a ship carrying one Vice Admiral Jaron. The only way they could have been less fortunate was if he was actually awake at the time. Instead, upon waking, he had put a call out to all nearby Marine ships for their arrest. And, after that deed was performed by Eve and co, he further demanded their deaths.

In the name of Absolute Justice. The drumming of her fingers increased. If she had known what he was going to ask, she would have never have intercepted their tiny rowboat. If the Vice Admiral trusted her to perform the task and left the matter be, they would have already have been let go. Instead, he was on his way, and he wanted to see the bodies himself.

An exercise in the chain of command, he called it. Failure to comply would result in punishment. His tone over the Den Den made Eve think hers, and her subordinates, fate would be all too similar. Eventually the drumming stopped, only for her fist to fall hard on the timbers, causing the entire table to splinter. Her rifle lay nearby, propped against some crates. She approached it slowly, almost afraid to touch it. Her gaze fell to the family. A family. There were children, a son and daughter both far, far too young to ever have to experience something as awful as this. If she had more time and was closer to Marineford, she might have been able to resist. Get some support from Saji, Coment, Vincent. She had all their favor. The word of the Fleet Admiral's niece went far. As it were, they were in the middle of nowhere with Jaron soon approaching.

It was the family, or them. She picked up the rifle and took a few slow steps towards them, all the while loading bullets into the chamber. "Someone blindfold them. Get them ear plugs," she said, voice almost cracking as tears burned her eyes. "I'll try make this as quick as possible."

Jukei washed his hands and made his way out from the kitchen; heading down towards the training space. He had been recently shifted to a smaller vessel with a small crew, so the responsibility of feeding them was not as large as feeding whole battalions of them and he was given more time for material training and other activities that usually would befall an ordinary marine when he was off-duty. He wasn’t going to complain, more time training meant more effectiveness in the battlefield and spending time away from the heat of the kitchen also helped him relax a bit. Having bought a pair of training trunks just for that purpose he quickly changed into them and set himself training. In the past months, he had surpassed the need for bandaging his hands and legs as due to his now increased training time; his skin had grown resilient enough to withstand the blows on its own. The Training room was well equipped, with various apparatus ranging from simple weights to wooden punching targets. He was warming himself up through the paces when a shrill tone sounded through the ship; every marine on the ship knew what that meant. All hands on deck. Quickly putting a standard issue marine shirt; He ran up to the deck.

The Captain gave the orders clearly; They were to intercept a band of thieves that were manning a small fast vessel and such everyone had to be the on the lookout for them. The quartermaster brought up a crate filled with binoculars and anyone who was not involved in the manning of the ship took positions as overwatch for these elusive thieves. Run of the mill operation, maybe a bit boring but Jukei was not a man to complain when faced with fresh air. Perching himself on a stool in the far-end on the deck; He set himself scanning the horizon, occasionally homing in with the binoculars on any distant shapes. Soon enough, the marine on the crow’s nest spotted them and the ship opened its sails to full mast as it closed in on the thieves.

The small fast vessel was nothing more than a rowing boat and they managed to apprehend the thieves without any resistance, being that they were a famished family; similar to the dozens that lived in Jukei’s home time. No, Not Jukei’s, Finnly’s. They tied them up and the Captain set down to relay the success of the mission to the top brass. She picked up the Den Den and got patched through the Vice Admiral who had personally ordered the mission himself. His Voice could be heard clearly over the open deck as he boomed his orders. “To be summarily executed, immediately.” Rare were the times when the orders were given so plainly and specifically; without any euphemisms such as “Dealt with” or “Punished, leaving the possibility of an execution up to the imagination or even up for debate. His voice left no room for any discussion and he made his intentions clear.

The Captain didn’t seem to be totally comfortable with executing the thieves, as after what must seem aeons of contemplating, her fist reducing the table to nothing more than a pile of splintered timber. Many Top-Brass in the marines had developed their own personal code of honour or specific set morals. Jukei, always the gentleman thought he should offer his limited wisdom to at least try to comfort her in some way. “In the name of Absolute Justice, everything is swept aside, ma’am. We must never forget that.” Jukei said to her in his calm low voice; a salute in tow to keep up with the protocol. That phrase has stuck with him since he had read it in a marine protocol training book, in the days where he was no more than mere recruit. The Captain took slow steps towards her rifle as she called for a chore boy to blindfold and muffle the prisoners. It seemed her decision had been made. The right decision.

Standing at the plains where he is now, Laxus can’t help but feels uneasy looking at the group of people in front of him. Those people are a group of thieves and they’re down on their knees with their hands tied behind their back. Yes they are criminals, but unfortunately Laxus knows them. More over he owes a favour with them. It’s quite a while back in the past, but when he was in the slum before, one of them gave him some food and that’s quite a big favour cause he would probably die if they didn’t give him those foods. And as he is the kind of person who never forgets paying back any favour, it’s quite a complicated situation he is in now.

If the one in charge is him, he will absolutely let them go. But unfortunately for him, he isn’t. The one in charge is a marine with quite a gap in rank with him, a rear admiral. Not only that, there is also a Commodore in their group. So it’s not in his place to make a decision. Even though it’s hard, if there’s no sudden change, all of them are definitely gonna be executed.

Looking at the rear admiral, she looks not happy with what she about to do. Hearing her order, Laxus decides to take the job himself. “Let me do that”, he quickly takes some cloths and one by one he blindfolds each of those thieves and also plugging their ears too. Hopefully that will amend even a little bit for him not to save these people while he still has a debt of favour with them. And what makes it harder is that one of them recognizes him but says nothing since he already accepts his fate. ‘Damn it’, seeing that makes Laxus unable to help but curses in his heart. After he’s done with them, he walks back to where he was before and helplessly waiting for what will be coming.

Uncarayne sighed. That stupid, stupid Jaron. It wasn't like the little motley group had even done anything wrong. Okay, okay, so they had done something wrong, it was pretty much the exact definition of piracy to go around stealing money on ships. And hunting pirates down was something Marines - and, yes, and even Bounty Hunters - did.

Uncarayne had had absolutely no problem with the easy mission he'd been sent out on with Eve. It had been almost leisurely, chasing them down and getting them... well, where they all were right now. Him and Eve, and a couple of new kids. And the Den Den Mushi that dripped with Jaron's satisfied tone.

Stupid, stupid Jaron, thought Uncarayne, but he had more tact than to say it out loud even if his face was clearly frowning. He was going to kill a family of four over... what, barely a hundred thousand beli? It wouldn't even have fed them for a month.

They stood there on the plains with the wind whistling through the grass. Uncarayne almost didn't catch Eve's voice, but he sure didn't miss her movement towards her rifle. And the newbies just... Oh, hell. They were just going along with it.

"Oh no you don't," growled Uncarayne, sharply. He was tall enough, and Eve was walking slow enough with that rifle, that he could intercept her before she raised it at them. "Jaron can do his own damn dirty work, if he's going to do it at all, and you know that." He put out his hand, pushing the rifle away. "They're no Arcadia, Eve."

Eve bit at her tongue. She felt sick, but at the same time her limbs were almost set to automatic. They were caught between the Vice Admiral's thumb and the wall; do his bidding and squeal "Yes sir!" to whatever he said, or be squished themselves. He really was a ruthless one, spending more time since his promotion going around 'testing' the resolve of lesser ranked officers than he did catching pirates. And to him, resolve meant eliminating evil and crime utterly and efficiently. It flew in the face of everything Eve believed in.

But what choice did she have? No, she didn't necessarily believe that her own life was above that of the prisoners. But even she, somewhere deep down, held tightly to a primal urge of survival. It rationalised it, told her that if she did survive, then naturally she could go on to save others and make up for it. There was a big wide world out there for her to save. The lives of countless more hung in the balance.

Except for the four sitting in front of her. To them, the world was over. They may as well open their eyes and see fire; a universe seeped in flames. It was over for them. Everything, gone. Soon there would be complete nothingness as their own universes were one by one destroyed. Her hands shook. A crewman tried to comfort her, one Jukei Fandango. She wanted to laugh at his naivety. What the hell did he know? He wasn't the one being ordered. He was still young and inexperienced. She doubted his capacity for true horror.

Another fulfilled her request. The family's whimpers only increased in volume. She bit at her lip. "Thank you, Laxus," she said, voice a hollow echo. It was a small comfort, but at the very least they wouldn't have to see the blood or hear the thump as the bodies fell to the floor. The gunshots she could do little about, too loud for the ear plugs to fully block. Another step, another beat of her pounding heart. Dizziness and nausea overtook her as she lifted and pointed the rifle at the first of them. her finger wobbled on the trigger. Flexed and stretched and fought with itself as her brain tore apart in two.

And... a gentle hand intervened. She looked, shakily, towards Unca. Furious, but still the same friend she had known since entering this damn sea. She opened her mouth into an O, held it there, then bit down on her tongue and looked away. The rifle was lowered, at least for a little while. "You think I don't know that?" she hissed in return. Her neck tilted back up to meet his eyes. She searched, almost pleadingly, but there was no master plan to save them. Just... defiance. "Unca, I know what this is. I'm not blind!" she yelled. Her shoulders sagged in crushing defeat. It really was inevitable though. "It's us or them. You've been in this great big outfit long enough to know you can't just refuse the order of a Vice Admiral. No matter how goddamn petty and dirty and scummy they might be. If we say no to this, it'll be us on the block next. That, or, or..." She wasn't even entirely sure what was worse, "...or we give up the coat. Go rogue. And there's no coming back from that."

She roughly pushed him aside and leveled the rifle again. "I'm sorry, Unca," she said, voice cracking. Moisture began to run down her cheeks. "You know I am. But... I have to do this."

After another moment of hesitation, she pulled the trigger.

His “reassuring” words seemingly fell on deaf ears; the captain’s eyes locked in a 100-yard stare. Well; at least he tried. His old partner Laxus decided to help out the Captain and took the task of blinding folding and muffling the prisoners himself; albeit he did appear hesitant midway; Was he having second thoughts? Laxus was a renegade marine after all; a Man who lived by his own rules and made his own meaning of Justice. Well, the marine life wasn’t easy after all; Second thoughts and pity were all part of the job, he thought to himself as he leant against the deck’s railing and taking out his pipe. He knew better than anyone else that death was the fate for them. Back when he was known as Finnly, he was like them; a shell of a person living day by day trying to survive. Stealing just to not die of hunger and cower another night in a cold alleyway. No hope for a good life. He might have gotten lucky but most didn’t. He was the only one from all his siblings to make it out of Ratwater. Death was better than living such a dark life. He puffed up smoke in the air; pushing back Finnly’s memories. He was Jukei now. Luck had smiled on him and he had moved on to a better life.

Yet, Jukei’s inner monologue was cut short by the actions of the captain’s right hand, Uncarayne. He and the captain went way back with each other and were comrades than colleagues. It seemed he was strongly against carrying out the prisoner's sentence and he wasn’t going to limit himself to talking as he pushed the barrel of the rifle away. Both of them become locked in a quiet argument. This was not just insubordination, this was a friendship in jeopardy. Paired with Laxus’s hesitation; this was a mutiny in the making. Taking a few steps forward; he lowered the pipe from his mouth. “The Orders were clear, Sir. Justice is blind, smiting any who taint society, be it by stealing a few beli to spreading terror on the grand line; It's our job to stop them. The Captain has no other option regardless, Sir. It's either the lives of thieves or the lives of a squad of honest marines. I think the choice is clear here, Sir.” he said with a salute before putting his pipe back between his lips. He knew fully well he was risking his career but the captain needed all the support that could be mustered. As soon as he took another puff of his pipe, a shot sounded. It seemed the captain has decided.

Don’t know it’s a good news or bad news for Laxus, just as the rear admiral gonna start to massacre those poor people, the commodore steps up and stops her. It’s an unexpected situation that makes Laxus starts thinking crazily that there’s a possibility for saving those people. With that crazy idea pops out in his head, it makes Laxus starts recollecting the past when he’s a rat slum. At his second year after he ran away from the orphanage he did a mistake when pick pocketing and got himself caught and beaten badly. With that kind of body condition full of injuries, he was not in a position to look for food and starved for three days. With his sad condition and lack of energy from hunger he almost passed away but luckily one of the people his group gonna dealt with this time gave him food and feed him. That was the reason why he could survive till now.

With that memories coming out, Laxus can't help but grit his teeth and decides to do anything his best to save those poor thieves. ‘Debt of life must be paid, that’s what I always do and I will do that exact thing now’, with that conviction in his heart, he ignores his marine pal Jukei words and makes his moves to stop the marine woman.

He grabs his spear and uses it to smack the rear admiral’s gun upward just right before the gun fired. After that he quickly moves his body and stands right in front of the group of thieves, that are startled by the gun shoot and starts crying, then he says, “Sorry mam, I can’t let you massacre them”. Even though he understands that what he just did will be harmful to him and he probably gonna regret it, but the action already performed and he can’t redo it. He just hopes that the commodore will follow up his previous action and back him up. With both his hands grabs his black spear, he is ready for anything that will come.

She looked at him, wide-eyed.

He stared back into her eyes.

The staring match only lasted a moment.

"There's got to be another way, Eve!" he insisted, sharply. Not a shout, even if he would have been justified because she'd yelled first; she wasn't wrong, it was that damned Jaron who gave the damned orders. "Absolute justice does not mean - this!" He bit his lip. "There's another way, Eve, we can find a way for them. Say they escaped, or they -"

She wasn't even listening to him anymore. Whatever Jaron had said, and he could guess what it had been. 'Us on the block next'. One way or another Jaron was going to insist on corpses today, the bloody fool. And beside him, beside Eve, the young man, that little Jaron-in-the-making, was talking. Talking himself into it, talking Eve into it. And all it came down to was - "Listen to yourself, Jukei, you - it's not even about justice anymore, is it," he snapped. "Their lives for yours? Is that - no. No." He gritted his teeth, and then stumbled and caught his footing again as Eve pushed him roughly aside.

"Eve -" he started, but already her rifle was up and aiming. Even if she was crying - it wouldn't save them. Her aim was too good for that. She fired. There was a bang as a spear lashed out and struck the gun, paired with the bang of the rifle-shot. "Eve!" he shouted. "No! You don't - you don't have to!" He took a breath. The other young man - Laxus - was already standing there, shielding the family of would-be thieves with his own body. Brave, admirable, foolish... but at least he had his heart in the right place. "Thanks, Laxus. Eve. Please... just stop. We don't have to do this."

But he took a deep heavy breath, and drew his hammers anyway. "But if you're going to do this, Eve, it's going to hurt us all."

For a moment, there was silence, save for the distant echoing of gunfire. It was distinctly like thunder.

Eve stood still, mouth slightly agape and eyes wide. They soon settled into a tightly-knit gaze of frost. Maybe she should have seen it coming. Instead, surprise still lingered deep in her gut and bones. Surprise, and a little pride to see someone so vastly lower in rank to her stand up and say no to this sham of an execution. To more than a few officers in the Marines, such actions would be merit the most severe of punishments imaginable. For some like Jaron, where simply refusing an order meant liquidation, Eve dared not think of what might happen to Laxus for deliberately stepping in and sabotaging the efforts of a superior, had he been under someone more cruel. A thought that was painfully ironic in her mind; 'someone more cruel,' as she only just failed at killing arguably innocent and pure people. A family, no less.

She stared him down. "You're a good kid, Laxus. The sort that the Marines could really use more of," she said with a throat as dry as sandpaper. "But our hands are tied here. Either they die, or we die. And if we die... if we die..." her teeth kept somehow finding her tongue, "...then we won't be there to protect others. Don't think for a second that I like or want this. I'm not going to punish or report you for what you just did, but that was your one and only chance. Stand. Down."

The rifle moved, pushing the spear out of the way. But before it could realign itself towards the prisoner's head, another voice spoke out. The butt of the rifle creaked under her titan grip. A few rogue sparks started to arc and flay the grass, charring them into black. Through clenched teeth, she managed to spit, "Unca. For the love of- for everything. Don't make this any harder than it has to be. With Jaron, there is no other way. Not unless you're happy to throw yourself into the fire instead." She tried to look away, back to prisoner helpless, scared and confused. But something caught her eye, and it twisted back to her friend. The hammers... the hammers were actually drawn.

He was going to do it, wasn't he?

Had she pushed any harder, she may well have shattered her own teeth. Instead she looked up at the sky and breathed heavily through both nostrils. Storm clouds were rolling towards them on the horizon. It smelled of rain.

She could call his bluff, but that look in his eyes... it went beyond anything she had ever seen in him before. He really wasn't going to let her go through with this.Again, her chest flushed with pride, only to melt down into despair at the knowledge that if he did stop her, then they were all dead.

There was only one option. As the commanding officer. As his friend. "I want you to know," she began, voice having softened like the first few drops that had started to fall, "I don't want to do this. But I'm a Marine. I've... I've dedicated my life to protecting people. And... I might not be able to protect these people- No, worse, the only thing I can do is hurt them... but at the very least..." Suddenly her gaze snapped back from the sky, she and Unca's eyes locking together as her left arm flared with electricity. "...I can try and protect you!"

A bolt of lightning flew, scorched the earth in a blue explosion, and the storm began.

As Jukei looked at the prisoners, he was mildly surprised to find that the prisoners were all alive, with a discharged shot inches higher on the mast. As long as he had served under the captain, he had never known her to miss. Yet, as he saw Laxus, he understood what had happened. He had intervened. Things were getting really heated, with most of the crew backing off from the scene, all unsure what to do. In Jukei’s eyes, this was a mutiny in progress. No, it was even beyond that; this was a friendship that lasted years breaking down slowly, with each blow. Commodore O’Brein didn’t see this as regarding justice anymore; Maybe in a twisted way it wasn’t. Maybe this was just a test of might; where only the victors would be right and the losers, well...dead.

Yet; The Captain had decided and there was no space for second thoughts anymore. This was going to come down to a fight. Both of them were powerful people, probably holders of a Devil Fruit and if not; they had strength to match the power of one. One does not simply reach such high ranks just by following orders. He stood no chance against the commodore, probably being put out of action with a single blow of his hammers. Yet, Laxus; Maybe he could handle him from interfering in the fight and maybe shifting the balance against the Captain.

Putting out his Pipe, he looked at the battle that was ensuing between the two of them. Visible arcs of lightning were extending from the captain. That was out of his leagues for sure. “Well, You know I can't let you interfere Laxus; "I guess it's going to be you and me then." he would say to him. "It was nice serving under you.” he said after a brief pause as he would muster a salute as he slowly turned towards the spearman “Nothing personal, right?” he would say as he stretched his joints. He didn’t know what his opponent's capabilities were but both he and him seemed to be pretty mundane. Taking off his glasses; he lay them next to his pipe and looked Laxus directly in the eyes. “Let us begin then.” he would say he would slowly start walking towards him.

Looking at how the rear admiral looks at him, Laxus can see some sadness, gratitude, pity, and some other kind of emotions flashing in her eyes. It’s quite a complicated emotion she had there, but in just a few second right after her words flows, the only thing he can see in her eyes is a resolution. And that means trouble for Laxus. Luckily for him, his bet pays as the commodore chooses his side. ‘Heh… looks like there’s some hope for me now”, he sighs happily in his heart after he saw that a hammer is drawn by the commodore.

The emotion of the rear admiral becomes a mess again after seeing what the commodore do, but it only just a moment as she finally quite angry and starts sending out shockwaves of electricity in her surroundings. Luckily for Laxus, he’s fairly far from the marine woman as he is standing in front of the thief but he still feels the power that comes out from that woman’s left arm, ‘What power…. Looks like her fame is not just a myth’. Watching that powerful lighting make him remember about the devil fruit he gave the marine in the past, and feels quite regret of that since if he consumes that devil fruit he probably able to obtain the same power as the rear admiral.

Seeing the power of the devil fruit user makes Laxus regret his choice. Fortunately, the one facing her is not him but the commodore. And just as he predicted, the young marine Jukei makes his move with his mouth saying things that seem irrelevant for Laxus. Knowing that there’s no harm will befall to the people behind him as long as the rear admiral and the youth before him occupied, he dashes forward without saying anything and swings his spear with all his might against Jukei wanting to slash or smack that youth’s waist.

The sky was darkening over them, wind blowing over their little tableau.

Heh, heh. Tableau. He could remember when he'd thought it meant a fancy table and had asked his uncle to teach him how to make one.

Uncarayne stood, hammers drawn, face drawn, trying not to show his thoughts. Because Eve was right, in her way, and that mad dog Jaron wouldn't rest until he had the blood he wanted. Whether it came from the thieves or the Marines wouldn't matter to him. But that made Jaron wrong, and his orders wrong, and why Eve was leaping to obey those orders...

A drop of rain spattered against his goggles.

"If you don't want to do this," he shouted at her over the wet whistling wind, "then don't! Why are you -"

Lightning sparked, flew. Uncarayne's hammer whirled up almost in reflex, forward and overhead, and tossed the lightning away in a long arc that streamed onto the grass and charred it black before the rain fell in earnest. The small fire sizzled and went out.

"..!" said Uncarayne, wide-eyed, chest heaving, hammer outstretched behind him to point accusatorily at the steaming patch of charred grass. His fingers tingled with what electricity had brushed past him. No more words, Eve? We always used to be able to talk. Her eyes were stony, angry, resolved. He fell into a crouch, and then rushed at her, blunt side of the claw hammer first. The time for words had passed.

A few left over sparks licked at the ground, and Eve's whole body began to steam as the rain fell in a steady and light beat. The worst of it was yet to come; even darker and thicker clouds loomed and rapidly made their approach. Such was the weather of the Grandline, brutal and indiscriminate. Far too like a certain Vice Admiral she could name. Swiping her free arm through the air and sending her coat billowing, she faced Unca for real. She didn't bother tracing the lightning as it flew away and exploded in the distance. She knew what Unca was capable of, and she'd be a fool to underestimate him. Perhaps she was being a fool all the same. But, again she thought, what choice did they have? Kill or be killed. So dearly did she want to be on his side, to just be able to say no, and it was only thanks to cosmically bad luck that they were in such a situation to begin with. The clamp was tightening, and if no resolution came soon then they would all pop.

"if I thought that was an option," she cried, scanning his every move through the falling rain, "don't you think I would have done it?! It isn't as simple as that!" Eyes narrowed, trained on him, she saw the first flex of muscle as he charged. Her body lit up and flung itself skyward in a great flash of light, narrowly avoiding that vicious hammer face. She didn't doubt that it could break bone easily enough, especially not with Unca's humble but impressive strength behind it.

Still in the air, she slammed another bullet into her rifle and jammed it up to her hip. "I can't give up everything I've worked for, Unca! I caught let everyone else out there down for the sake of one family, no matter how much I have to hate myself!" Her finger touched the trigger and it became a blur, causing a cacophony of booms and cracks. Bullets sprayed downward towards where Unca stood, saturating the area with lead electrically charged lead that bounced off earth and air alike in a chaotic stream. She could have accelerated it, pushed the bullets to greater speeds and velocities... but she couldn't quite bring herself to do it. Not against him of all people. She just wanted, needed him to stop, stand down and let her get this over with. He didn't even have to watch or shoulder any of the guilt. She could and would take it all if she had to!

"Just look at the bigger picture here, Unca! Please!"

Laxus didn’t even return the salute. It might have been rude coming for anyone else but Laxus was always a renegade. Instead; he greeting his salute with a swipe of a spear. Laxus was a master of the spear; his rigorous techniques with it were effective and to *the point* yet Jukei was much quicker on his feet than him. The spear slashed at his lower torso and cutting through the thin fabric of his shirt. He had dodged the brunt of the attack yet he still had drawn blood as scratch line appeared from a glancing hit by the spear point. He had underestimated him.

Still; Laxus’s reach was a *double edged spear* in close quarters; he couldn’t fight that well as his long weapon would become awkward to use when in hand to hand combat. As soon as the spear was three-fourths of the way into the sweep; Jukei broke into a charge and shouted "Heads up!" as he headbutted Laxus straight into his nose. As he did so; he extended his leg and put it down firmly as to brace himself in case Laxus tried to reverse his move and disbalance him with the spear shaft.

Just when he sends his attack at his opponent, the rain falls and the drops of water pouring down quite heavy. ‘Is this a joke?’, Laxus can’t help but curses in his heart knowing that a lightning user and a rain are quite a bad combination. Even though he thinks about the rain and lightning he still keeps his main focus to Jukei. That’s why he sees clearly that Jukei is able to dodge his spear with just a little bit of scratch on his belly. And that makes Laxus quite surprises as he knows that Jukei has far better speed than him.

While he is quite amazed by Jukei bad responses, there’s a loud sound of an explosion nearby, probably coming from the rear admiral who uses lightning. Even though he is already waiting for it, the sound still distracts him a bit. And that little bit of distraction makes him unable to react to Jukei’s headbutt and got his nose hurt quite badly. “Ack…”, he can’t help but grunts a little right after that strike.

But he doesn’t want to take that attack without paying back, Laxus uses the force of that headbutt and lets his body sway backward while sending his left leg to kick Jukei’s chin. And at the same time he sends his kick, he also hears another loud sound of an explosion.
