A dangerous pirate by the name of Kale has taken over a large, island town. He and his crew have drawn the attention of the marines. Kale, powerful and wealthy, seeks the loot he believes to be gained from the island in addition to increasing his own infamy. Kale's crew have now held off the navy for several days as they take their time with the town.

The increased marine presence has made things harder for other pirates in the area, so in addition to marines and bounty hunters wanting his head, there are more than a few pirate crews after the same thing as well as the loot Kale is amassing.

The town and surrounding waters have become a battlefield as the various parties and factions duke it out for the opportunity to take it all for themselves. Unfortunately, the situation has caused a rift between many groups due to the risks and morals involved. Even taking out the question of to participate or not, the answer of how one might come out on top in this situation is not a clean one either. There are still many residents on the island getting caught in the crossfire who can do little more than hide and stay low in hopes it will all end soon. It is for this reason, Morose, Salasais, Kid, and Yvette find themselves pairing up with strangers and fighting against prior acquaintances and friends. Whoever stops Kale and/or makes off with the loot wins.

They needed what was here. And it was in a warzone. Though Salas always had respected Morose's capacity to avoid killing his opponents, the Shaman had no such restraint. He had split off from the chef in an attempt to cut deep into the melee that was Kale's stomping ground and a trail of bodies killed by his poisonous spores made it very clear where he had been. Among some of the larger men in the streets there could be signs of a struggle, but much of the weaker crews had mostly cleared out once his presence had been made known. He took a moment of repose in the brief moment of stillness before he would have to face some stronger opponent seeking to take his head.

Though he hated to commit atrocities like this, Salasais Racto had largely given up on resolving conflict without bloodshed as it was the most effective means of survival and putting effort into non-lethal approaches had only led to personal injury and inevitable descent into a berserker rage. After taking a moment to catch his breath, the Shaman trudged back into where the next battle was erupting, hoping not to cross paths with his friend in case he got carried away. The moss growing from his back wriggled and writhed before twisting into the shape of a pair of arms that twitched in anticipation of the coming battle.

Kid made his way through the battlefield, his nervousness showing but still a shred of determination to be found. He was uneasy about this whole thing, with the sound of gunfire constantly filling the air and his general dislike of what he knew was soon to happen. He’d heard about Kale only recently, and had sort of just ended up in the middle of this mess by accident. Yet something compelled him to fight and stay, and that was treasure. Since being left on his own, he’d been searching for some way to pay for all his upgrades he wanted, and even moreso when there was treasure, there was a chance of the fabled hot chocolate recipe he’d been after.

Popping a few cola bottles into his mouth, the cyborg became increasingly aware of a marine charging him, who he swiftly threw to the floor with little to no struggle, punching the man in the ribs to keep him out of the fight, but not nearly enough power to kill him. He didn’t like to kill, even if most his power came from rather deadly attacks… He shuddered slightly as he remembered the girl he’d accidentally killed in Mirrorball, back before he had any sort of control of his strength. Weird, even though they’d been being controlled by a young cyborg girl gone bad, he was well… Sort of happy back then, because Katie was still about…

Suddenly the teen ducked down, narrowly avoiding a hail of bullets aimed at someone else, or so he presumed. But he took this brief moment to look across the small port town, appreciating the nice buildings around here, although not so much with all this fighting. As far as the eye could see was bloodshed, and… As he squinted slightly due to his short sightedness, he was sure he could make out one or two odd individuals… Huh

Did this "Kale" really think he was going to get away with taking the plunder of this town all to himself, while none other than Yvette Syndice was around? Of course not, because she was going to take it all. Dressed up in a cute red dress, who on earth would expect a girl of her age to be out to murder anyone who tried to keep her from her prize?

But the main issue lay in actually locating that treasure, in a town that had descended into chaos. Pretty much the only ones roaming the streets at this point were ones looking to beat things up to get their hands on the loot, so it wasn't exactly the safest of places to walk freely about. Yvette decided not to take her chances, instead sticking to the narrower alleyways so that she wouldn't get caught in all the pointless exchanges of volleys.

And it was in doing so that she nearly ran straight into a rather unusual-looking man, covered in what looked like dirt, moss and mould. A homeless guy? "Hey! Watch it!" The petite supervillain barely came up to his chest, but she didn't let that stand in the way of her making it clear who was in charge.

Morose

Morose

Battle Ambience

Port Town

Morose rushed forward like a blur of motion. His black cloak that sparkled in the midday sun billowing behind him, the youth swung an arm around the glinted silver for a moment as it collided with the arms of a marine leveling a rifle in the general direction of Kid's back. The marines shot fired off harmlessly into the air has blood stained the white sleeves of his uniform. The rifle dropped from his fingers as he relaxed his arms at his side, his face stricken with pain. Morose had already moved on, swiftly moving between several marines that happened to be in the area and taking aim at or at risk of doing so. With a single flash of one or both of his arms, the marines lost their means of continuing the fight without medical attention.

There were still more marines and bounty hunters in the street Morose and Kid were on, but Morose appeared in need of a breather as he stood with his back to Kid, though no less alert to the other youth and the action in the street. Kid stood nearly a head taller than Morose, but Morose held himself like someone who had seen his fair share of action. His sleepy looking eyes appeared haunted by something.

"You'll want to watch your back, kid. This isn't the place for children. You'll get yourself or someone else killed if you stay out here."

Morose said grimly to Kid not seeming to be familiar with Kid in the least or his capabilities. Coincidentally, Morose and Kid were about the same age although Morose looked younger. Morose appeared to be more preoccupied eyeing the opposition in the street that was regrouping, however. The cover he stood behind with Kid was not a good cover from all directions. Just then a man stumbled out of a nearby door carrying a half empty bottle of spirits and reeking of alcohol. He ranted incoherently and waved around a pistol in his other hand. Morose tensed up as if to act decisively against the drunk and the other men he drew the attention of.

He had been prepared to carve a path to the center of the island, what Salas was not prepared for was being called out by a little girl. His first instinct at the rude introduction was to lash out at the source as he was in a state of high alert. As he turned to strike the intruder, however, his second instinct was to rein himself in somewhat as the one invading his space appeared to be a petulant little girl. Annoying as her first impression had been, he was at least in enough control of himself for now to know that hardly merited death. His moss limbs hung in the air, twitching occasionally. The body attached to them eyed the girl with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.

"Strange to see such a small thing in this field of death. Stranger still to see her able to able to stand amid Our spores which have killed grown men in droves, as she can likely see..." A green, clawed finger from the mossy growth gestured toward the dozens of pirates and marines spasming in their death throes in the street he had come from.

"Who are you and what reason is Salas given for Us not to kill you?"

Although the shaman was hesitant to consciously kill what seemed to be a child, he knew that nothing in this city would be on the streets if it were innocent and if she didn't have the power to be a threat, his spores would have killed her already.

A gunshot louder than the others rung behind Kid’s head, causing the boy to quickly spin to find if he was being shot at. Instead of finding a marine pointing a gun at him like he’d anticipated, instead he found a boy… Man… He couldn’t tell, but he was currently dropping one marine after another, before pausing to talk to him directly.

“Uh… Thanks. I should be fine…”

He didn’t want to burst this guy’s bubble, but those bullets wouldn’t have hurt him anyway. Whoever he was, he had essentially just swatted some flies away from his face for a few seconds, which although he appreciated, probably was more effort for him than he should have been spending on Kid. After all, there was little to no point helping him, he was pretty worthless and crappy after all. He sighed heavily and attempted a smile at his helper nonetheless, appreciating the gesture if nothing else.

Just then, a door burst open and out stumbled a drunk man, waving a pistol in the air and a bottle of alcohol in the other. Kid eyed him for a moment, wondering if he’d actually be of any danger, before concluding that drunk people had a certain knack for causing chaos. Someone could easily get shot after all. Reaching into his pockets, he searched around for something to use. Burning the guy would be pretty mean, and freezing him just as much so. So perhaps he should just… Yeah. Bringing out an odd looking contraption, the teen took aim, loading a fruit sweet into the top of the pistol like weapon and firing.

A slight fizzing noise could be heard, before a pop as the sweet flew at the target, knocking the gun from the man’s hand and causing him to drop his bottle as a reaction too. The teen then pulled back a little nozzle part to the contraption and took a big drink from it, smirking to himself before pocketing the weapon and remaining behind cover with his… New ally he supposed, muttering to himself about the drunk:

“Not a fan of alcohol…”

This giant of a man was just as slow as the moss that grew on him, it seemed. "Are you talking to yourself, mister?" For the time being, acting her part was probably safest. Safer than just going ahead and attacking this man, anyway. Yvette was not oblivious to the miasma exuding from his body, sinking into her with every breath. It was far too late to hold her breath, because it had begun to take effect before she had even gotten close enough to notice it. She was breaking out into a light sweat, her head throbbing and her muscles aching... whatever it was, it wasn't leaving her in a great condition, even with her cybernetic body.

"I'm Yvette! You shouldn't kill me because I'm not killing you!" She wasn't right now, anyway. Maybe it was a good idea to take this Salas guy down... it would free her from the effects of his poison, at the very least. But she could just run away if she wanted that - assuming he hadn't decided her to be a threat and attacked her first, anyway. She may have been a little girl, but anyone out on the streets was either a pirate or one in disguise.

"Yvette needs to find the treasure to... uh... pay for her grandma's medicine! Will you help me, mister?"

Morose

Morose

Battle Ambience

Morose's expression to Kidd was a complex one. He seemed amused by how he dispatched the drunk, a small smile on his lips, but his eyes were far more critical, narrowed and intense. Morose also seemed perplexed by the weapon used by Kid and eyed the weapon skeptically. He finally nodded to himself.

"I suppose not. If you can defend yourself and aren't going to run away, maybe we should have each other's backs for a while. There are too many enemies in too many directions for anyone to get far in this alone. We'll likely die. Probably gonna die. But we can stave off the inevitable a bit longer working together."

Morose gestured toward the center of town. It rose above the rest of the island on a hill and a larger building of some significance sat atop it. Suddenly, Morose's knives were in hand and protruding from his cloak in a ready to use stance as a dirty old man peaked out from around the building they were taking cover by.

"Say, did I hear ya right? You kidz wantn ta get ta the top o the hill there? I may be able to help."

The old man's words were a mixture of slang and mumble but his eyes were clear and earnest.

"So what if we are, gramps"

Morose's use of 'we' was a hesitant one. He first looked up to Kid again with curious eyes for a moment before looking back to the old man. He didn't lower his weapons or lower his guard. For the moment Morose and Kid were not actively engaged and most of the marines and bounty hunters that had noted their presence were either unable to fight or preoccupied with other threats. Their safety would be fleeting as bullets started to pelt and lodge themselves into the building the 2 youths stood by.

"I so happenz ta hav a way to the top that don't get ya shot'up. urry up. cum dis way..."

The old man seemed rather proud of himself as he stated it loud enough to be heard over the gunfire and then ducked back around the corner. In the shade of the alley, there was a freshly disturbed mound of dirt and a hole large enough for a person to slip down into. It was pretty dim, but if one looked inside, they might think they saw the faintest light in the depths of the hole. Morose considered for a moment before looking at Kid. Hole with stranger danger or gauntlet of streets?

Salas almost chuckled at the child's reasoning for staying alive, but the fact remained that she hadn't started a fight so there was no point in his doing so just yet. Yvette also mentioned a need to get the treasure to cure her grandmother of some illness; the story was likely a fabrication, but that was not his concern. "Whatever you need this wealth for, We are sure there is enough to meet Our needs and yours if you survive to claim it. Do not get in Salas' way or you will likely die."

Though he didn't directly say he would help the girl, taking an opportunity for a truce would make things easier on him and help the Shaman to keep a level head amid the chaotic streets. As such, he warned her against opposing him and resumed his march toward the center hill, his own cadence was calm but the green limbs sprouting from his back unleashed hell on the marines that had taken hold of the road he was approaching. His toxic spores rendered any close combatants among their ranks completely powerless and their near-dead bodies were held ahead of him as a shield against firearms. When he felt he had gotten close enough, Salas rushed forward and jumped the barricade the marines had put up against the encroaching pirates and quickly incapacitated a dozen of the men. He was not in the mood for wasting time as he steadily waded his way toward the city center where Kale was holed up.

“Y-yeah, sure…”

The teen managed, although he wasn’t even sure if his newfound ally had managed to hear him over the gunfire. He needed to work on things like that to be honest, especially if he was going to be throwing himself into fights all the time. Although he supposed he’d need some sort of allies to shout to first, so maybe it wasn’t that key anyway. This guy’s negativity was something Kid could relate to though, so he remained focused and listened to what he was saying, until an old man decided to say hello, or more… Offer a way to the treasure.

Allowing his recently made ally to speak for him, the old man pointed out that he had a way to get to the top of the hill, without getting filled with bullets, which sounded… More pleasant. Although bullets hardly even bothered Kid, he still got sort of anxious that suddenly one would fly straight through his metal outer body and shred everything inside. Needless to say, he had a rather graphic imagination.

“W-well… One guy is easier than, uh, well hundreds”

He managed meekly as it dawned on him that he was being looked at, in a way that was probably to ask him what he thought he should do. Pocketing the weapon, he left the proper decision making up to the blond, if only because he was horrible indecisive when an option even slightly involved another person. Why did most of his problems seem to revolve around people? Oh wait, yeah, because he had a bad childhood. Nevermind.

“B-but it’s up to you…”

Hopefully his inability to decide what was best for him wouldn’t annoy his new ally too much, although he’d found in the past it had grown to aggravate some people. Reaching carefully into his pocket, he pulled out a pack of fizzy sweets, looking at them for a brief moment before holding them out towards the blond.

“Do you… Uh, want one?”

"Is that an offer to team up? I won't get in your way if you don't get in mine, moss guy." Having someone like him on her side could turn out to be... very beneficial. The airborne poison seeping out from his pores, and the large pair of moss-arms reaching out of his back, were clear indicators that he wasn't just some random guy looking for some money. He actually had quite the specialised skillset, one that Yvette guessed would be very good at deterring others away.

"Alright! It's a deal! I'll give you a portion of the treasure if you can pull your weight. You'll get to be my temporary underling, isn't that exciting?" She didn't bother to ask whether he was actually going to agree or not, so much as assuming he'd go along with it already.

"I'll just... stay a few steps away from you. You smell pretty bad."
She wanted her enemies to bear the brunt of that debilitating toxin, not herself. As such, she followed after the poison-man at a safe distance of several metres, being careful to step over the marine bodies he left in his wake.

Morose

Battle Ambience

Port Town

Morose eyed Kid's offering with a certain air of uneasiness. He leaned away from it as it was offered as well. The youth was not quick to accept the snack. He looked up at Kid, meeting his eyes and holding the gaze for a moment before looking away just as quickly. He swallowed nothing and tapped his foot before finally reaching beneath his cloak. Producing a sack, Morose reached inside and took out a small, round bundle that fit in the palm of his hand and was decoratively wrapped. Putting the larger sack away, Morose also undid the little ribbon on the wrapping in his hand. The wrapping paper pulled back to reveal a neatly crafted bun, white and soft in appearance.

Morose deposited his Brain Bun into Kid's outstretched hand when he took the snacked offered him. Popping the snack into his mouth, his eyes looked up and around at nothing in particular as he seemed to savor the morsel. Swallowing, he shrugged as he nodded his head indifferently.

"Tastes alright, but I think you'll get more of a kick out of that. It'll allow you to think quicker and with more focus. Perhaps you'll be able to make your own decisions more often. Hesitation and doubt can wreck a dish, or more applicably get you killed."

Brain Food Buns

The last Morose said critically before turning on his heals to pursue the old man into his tunnel. Standing at the edge, Morose looked down into the dimly lit space before hopping down and out of sight. The bottom came up quicker than one might expect and Morose bent low as he nearly lost his footing. Righting himself and spotting some feint fire light further in, Morose quickly moved down a dirt-lined tunnel that was connected to several other similar tunnels. The place seemed labyrinthine at first glance. Morose found the hunched over form of the man in a slightly larger space in the tunnel. Holding a lantern and a shovel, he waited patiently with a grin. Morose peered at him suspiciously.

"We should hurry,"

The old man said chipper as he marched ahead without further discussion.

Salas hadn't offered or agreed to much of anything but the girl seemed to insert herself into the role of employer for some odd reason, but that wasn't important as of yet. She also commented on keeping her distance on account of his smelling bad, he would have been offended if not for the fact that deadly poison being considered merely an unpleasant odor was both impressive and somewhat funny to him. This little girl reminded The Shaman somewhat of Morose when they first met what seemed like an eternity ago.

"Deadly poison is an unpleasant scent. Yes. It would be wise to keep your distance, but We hope you do not expect Salas to carry all of your weight for you."

In his advance toward the central hill, the notion that the innocent would not be in the streets was his comfort against the idea that he was leaving a trail of suffering and death behind him. It really seemed as though the more formidable opponents must have already gathered in the center as the battles he waded through along the way offered no real resistance, scaring off many, killing others, and leaving only a few fighters for Yvette to even consider worth dispatching.

The hill was close now, if Kale was as fierce as his reputation implied then Salas would likely be unable to control himself for long.

“T-thanks”

Kid managed, unsure what to do with the doughy object now placed in his hand. He pocketed his original sweets and looked at the unique, small bun which sat in his hand, contemplating its consumption. On one hand, he struggled to bring himself to eat others food, but on the other hand it’d be rude not to especially now he was holding it. He was sure it was nice, but… Taking a small bite, his eyes widened a little bit. It was… Actually sort of sweet, and not anything too heavy or gross like the usual ones you’d find in shops. He quickly finished the rest of it up, feeling a slight rush of energy or something.

“It’s sweet, and tasty… thankyou”

He was also the type to thank someone multiple times, as well as the type to get distracted by food. So much so that he hadn’t quite clicked what this unnamed ally had said, and almost missed the entrance to the tunnel too. He just about managed to follow however, and practically fell down the hole, landing awkwardly on the floor, just about remaining on his feet with the help of his hands. Quickly recovering, he wiped his hands down on his trousers, before rushing to catch up.

It took him a moment to get to where his ally now stood, if only because he was doing his best to avoid getting wet. After all, if he got soaked then his cybernetics would short fuse, a depressing side effects of not having any clue how to fully coat oneself in anti-water stuff. Peering around Morose for a moment, Kid noticed the tunnler man, who quickly began moving through the underground maze. This was… Weird. Not that the teen hadn’t seen many weird situations.

“By the w-way, who are… What’re you called?”
