A few days before, on a dark and stormy night, a vessel transporting exotic animals for a great menagerie crashed into the island or Pharsalus at the edge of the Swamp of Lost Souls. Nobody from the ship was heard from again, likely lost in the swamp or eaten by some terrifying creature that broke loose from the hold? Who knows, really, the important thing is that many rare, dangerous, and probably invasive beasts escaped into the bog known for being full of freaky and/or terrifying stuff. One such beast has strayed particularly close to a seaside village on occasion and begun to be a subject of some hysteria among the townsfolk with the prevailing opinions generally involving some kind of tribute.

These conditions are what brought Peoria to her current predicament. She had been swimming aimlessly for days unsure of what to do with herself. She was free of the natural prison which kept her bottled up for years on end but was completely devoid of any personal connections and frankly distrustful of humans. She found herself nearing an island when something shiny on the seafloor near the coast caught her eye, an unfamiliar contraption she found herself inspecting more closely to learn its purpose and workings. Thus she found herself stuck in a lobster trap.

Feeling foolish for sure, the young fishgirl was pretty scared of what exactly awaited her outside her new prison. The only creature more frightened was the human who pulled the trap out of the water to discover a strange girl fish in his trap. Nobody in the interaction was particularly keen on communicating as the panicked fishgirl hissed and struggled to get out of the cage.

One assembled mob later, Peoria had been moved from one form of captivity to another, being securely bound to a post in the center of town as a tribute to the monster that had been prowling the outskirts of late. At the foot of the pole was also a pile of raw meat to further show the beast the support of the community. She had been captured shortly after lunch and it had been a several hours since then and Peoria had since stopped struggling against her bonds and was tearfully resigned to her fate of being stuck to a pole in the middle of town until something decided to eat her. She was quietly bemoaning her misfortune to herself between sobs, "Rotten humans... I finally get to explore and I get trapped again before I even get to see anything but fish. I hope that stupid monster eats them too..." At least the rain meant she wouldn't dry up out there.

As all of this was going on, a ship was coming in.

"Thanks for the lift guys!" Hansel gave the crew of the merchant ship a big grin as the ship slowly pulled in towards the dock. After his adventure on Shadow Mose Island, Hansel had managed to get a lift on this ship to head for the next island. He hadn't been there for along, but the darkness made it difficult. He preferred to go somewhere with a bit more light.

And so, here he was. Picking up the massive flail he had brought with him, slinging his pack over his shoulder, and lept over the side, landing on the dock, much to the surprise of the crew, who hadn't finished tying the ship to the dock and lowering the gangplank. Whistling a small tune, Hansel began to walk down into the town proper, ignoring the surprised looks.

As he walked into the town, he immediately noticed that the place was surprisingly empty. Seriously, not a soul in sight. This didn't seem right. After all, if there was an active port here, there should be people around. Maybe they were all taking a nap or something? He had only been on two islands in his entire life. He didn't know how customs worked.

As he approached the town center, he paused, seeing what appeared to be an unusual girl tied to a post, with pieces of meat laid at her feet. The boy tilted his head to the side, confused as he approached her. "Hello there!" he said in a friendly tone, "What are you doing tied there? And what's with all the wasted meat?"

Hansel's approach and happy greeting caught Peoria completely off guard, eliciting a startled squeak from the young fishgirl. Her eyes were full of fear for a brief moment until she was aware that this human was neither a resident of this town nor actively seeking her destruction. That was a plus, at least. The young man proceeded to ask what she was doing alone stuck to a pole in the middle of town surrounded by spoiling meat which, when she thought about it, was a pretty reasonable question which -definitely- meant he wasn't from around here. Her eyes were still red with fresh tears as she responded with the kind of rasp that one could expect from someone both thirsty and in distress "Th-these mean humans think I'm a monster and now they want to feed me to a bigger monster! I didn't even do anything, I was just exploring and now I'm gonna die..."

As she resumed her lamenting, a low rumble could be heard as something big was cautiously approaching the town square. Its breathing sounded heavy and wet.
Bigger Monster

It came slowly around a corner at the end of the street, a thick, stocky creature the size of a tool shed that appeared to be one part toad and thirteen parts Stuff of Nightmares. It sniffed the air before turning to look at the post where the Peoria was trapped and snapped its gaping maw open and closed a couple of times before starting to waddle towards the prisoner and her visitor whilst licking its chops with a thick, bulbous tongue.

Needless to say, seeing exactly what was supposed to be her doom did very little to improve Peoria's mood as her eyes widened and immediately closed tight. She wriggled against her restraints and whimpered to herself as The Beast took its sweet time approaching its tribute.

Hansel's cheerful smile faded when he got a better look at the girl. She was around his age, maybe a little younger, and judging from the redness of her eyes, looked like she had been crying. As she explained her situation, Hansel could see no attempt at deception in the poor fishgirl's eyes. Just a poor girl thrown into a bad situation. "Well, don't you worry. I'll get you down from there and th-"

He was cut off by the rumbling of the beast approaching. Looking down the street, he spotted the massive thing. Some sort of strange frog, that was now waddling its way towards them. Guess this was the bigger monster that the girl was talking about. And if the hungry look in its glassy eyes were any indication, it was more than happy for a meal. As the fishgirl struggled against her restraints, Hansel moved to put himself between her and approaching monster.

"Don't you worry. I've faced big things like this before!" It was sort of strange, hearing no fear in the boy's voice as he said that. With a small grunt, he let the massive ball of his flail fall to the ground with a crash. Then, gripping the chain tightly, he braced his body, waiting for the monster to get within range. Once it was within range, Hansel gave a mighty heave, Hansel swung the massive ball towards the beast, aiming to slam it into a nearby building. The beast didn't seem too face, and with the massive stone and iron ball flying at him, it shouldn't be too hard to land a hit.

He glanced back at the tied up fishgirl, bringing one hand into his pocket, fishing around for something. "Ah! Here it is!" Pulling out a pocket knife, he handed it to the tied up fishgirl, "That should get you out of there." He gave the captured girl a big grin.

Peoria wasn't used to actually receiving help, so she didn't know exactly how to respond when Hansel offered to free her from the dangerous predicament she was in. In fact, she didn't even acknowledge the notion of being rescued right now for fear of getting her hopes up when the beast she was meant to feed was literally approaching as he spoke. She couldn't ignore it when he said he was going to fight the hulking frogbeast, though, and opened her eyes. "W-what? you're going to fight it?! How-" It was then that she noticed Hansel readying a huge ball on a chain... crude, but the tool fits the job, she supposed.

The boy swung the massive hunk of stone and iron at the beast and, given that the monster had apparently not been used to having prey fight back, actually landed a pretty solid hit! A satisfyingly squishy sound accompanied the blow, but the frogbeast was still very much alive and had its feet still on the ground! It did appear to have a sizable swelling on the side of its face and its jaw was somewhat out of place. It backed away from its attacker and let out a rumbling croak that rattled the nearby windows before hopping away with loud plops until it was out of sight.

Peoria, for her part, simply let her mouth hang open in amazement that someone who wasn't even much bigger than herself was able to hold their own against something that big, more importantly that they could lift and effectively swing something so much bigger than himself. In her shock, she had hardly even noticed that Hansel had returned to cut her loose. Feeling her feet on solid ground again, however, The Fishgirl's eyes lit up "I'm saved? I'm saved! Thank you so-! Wait." She was about to jump into a hug but then stopped herself and once again eyed her savior cautiously, "who are you and why are you doing this? Humans don't just help someone for no reason. What are you after?" She wanted to be grateful, and she was definitely happy to be off of the sacrificial post, but she wasn't ready to let her guard down just yet.

The peace of the beast's absence was short-lived, however, as a small crowd of the townspeople came out of their homes and a robed man stormed angrily toward the post, "You Fool! Do you have any idea what you've done?! The Mongrut has been denied its tribute and you have assaulted it! You've doomed us all, your meddling will bring Mongrut's wrath against our homes and livestock!"

Amidst the village elder's tirade, Peo was timidly hiding behind the post. She knew that it was he that ordered the people to tie her up the first time and was afraid he would do it again.

"Even worse! You've released the demon child! She must be reclaimed by the swamp or we'll be faced with calamity!" The village elder's face was red as he shouted his rebuke at the boy.

Hansel had to admit, he was a little impressed that the beast was able to take that blow and not be sent flying. It reminded him of the boar he fought back on Drum. Maybe gigantic beasts were just more sturdy that way. The boy couldn't help but feel excited about this upcoming fight. Which was why he was disappointed that the beast turned and fled the scene. Really? All the build up and it was going to run? What a let down!

With a sigh, he turned back to the fish girl, who was now cutting herself down from the pole. He couldn't help but smile at how happy she seemed to be free, before she became cautious. Why did he save her? The boy shrugged. "You looked like you were in trouble, and you hadn't done anything wrong to deserve it." the boy blinked and then realized that he hadn't introduced himself to the girl this entire time. How rude of him. "The name's Eureka D. Hansel. Nice to meet you!" He extended a hand towards her, smiling brightly.

However, their little introduction was interrupted by the arrival of a mob, pissed off by what Hansel had done. As the fish girl retreated behind the pole, Hansel tilted his head in confusion by the older man's tirade. So the beast was called the Mongrut, and they were scared of it? Now so more than ever because Hansel had hurt it. Really, the answer to this problem seemed obvious. "Well, if it's that big of a deal, why don't I just go and finish it off? I mean, I chased it off with one hit. It shouldn't be too hard to take it down." The boy lifted up the massive ball of his flail as if to demonstrate the point. That big thing was the thing that had hurt the beast after all. He then glanced back at the fish girl. "Just didn't seem right to tie a crying girl to a post and feed her to a giant frog. Besides, if you didn't want it coming into town, why did you set her up in the middle of the town? If she's from the swamp, just let her go back to the swamp." Hansel shrugged, not understanding the silliness driving these people. People were strange.

Peoria was surprised that this total stranger had rescued her and challenged a huge monster for no reason except that she needed help. It was a novel concept, but certainly one she couldn't complain about and it certainly seemed pretty admirable even if she wasn't sure she would have done the same if their positions were reversed. He introduced himself as Eureka Hansel and extended a hand in friendly greeting. She was about to reciprocate when the villagers surrounded them and rebuked the foreigner for interfering.

Hansel seemed to treat the dangerous situation as casually as debating with a child. The village elder was at a loss for words with how simple the boy made everything sound. "Uh, yes, yes! That is a suitable punishment for meddling in the traditions of our village! Go into the swamp and face the Mongrut, bring back proof of its demise and all will be forgiven! And bring the demon child with you!" The elder honestly didn't expect them to survive the swamp, but it was a win-win really. If they were eaten by the beast, Mongrut would be satisfied and leave them alone; if they killed the beast, Mongrut would be dead and leave them alone!

Peoria didn't like the idea of going further inland, but if following Hansel was the only way to leave this place without getting trouble from the villagers she didn't have much choice. Besides, he got swept into all this drama with the village because he saved her life so she couldn't help but feel kind of responsible not to ditch him at the earliest convenience. Thus the two of them were "banished" into the swamp.

Fortunately, the superstitions of the villagers prevented them from actually confiscating Peoria's weapons for fear of them being cursed, so she didn't have to go into the swamp unarmed. She still stuck close to Hansel as he was the first decent human she had met and seemed like a fairly capable source of protection for the time being. "Eureka... I'm Peoria. I, uh, don't actually live in the swamp. I think that's just where they think stuff they don't like belongs. I actually live in the ocean."

The odors of the swamp were far from pleasant, and the fishgirl found herself feeling somewhat dizzy as noxious fumes offended several of her senses at once. The place was creepy, that was for certain, but at least there weren't angry mobs in the swamp. Only the unknown.

Hansel smiled as the locals agreed with what he planned, seemingly unaware of the fact that they didn't care if the boy survived or not. When they mentioned that he had to take the 'demon girl' with him, he shrugged and looked back at her, smiling. After she had her stuff returned to her, the two of them set out, heading towards the swamp. As she explained that she wasn't from the swamp, but rather the ocean, Hansel gave her a smile. "I had a feeling that was the case. I mean, you don't look like a swamp person. Nice to meet you Peoria."

As they entered the swamp, the boy's face scrunched up from the stench of it all. This wasn't at all like tracking the boar back on Drum. The snow had a nice, clean smell to it, and the place was cold. Here, the swamp was hot, muggy, and it smelled foul. Holding the ball in one hand, he covered his nose with the other. Still, there was a big, scary beast running around in this swamp, and he had to do something about it.

He noticed that the fish girl was starting to get dizzy from the smell, almost toppling over. Forcing himself to take a big gulp of putrid air, Hansel reached out to support her, to keep her from falling over into the sticky gunk. Any possibility of her lying about her not being a swamp lady was pretty much gone by this point. Still, it was somewhat inconvenient that he had to carry her, and his weapon at the same time. But at least it added a level of challenge to the whole ordeal.

Looking over the dark swamp, he tried to see any trace of the gigantic toad. Now, if I was a giant frog, where would I hide? Here froggy froggy froggy. Come on out so I can squish you."

Among the mud and reeds, large, webbed footprints could be seen gradually fading back into the soft ground as water filled the tracks. If footprints could be seen at all in this kind of place, they had to be fresh. There were a few wetland trees scattered about throughout the swamp as well.

The overpowering stench of the place was more than Peoria could handle and she was grateful for Hansel's support. If she fell over she'd probably pass out and get sucked down into the mud or something, this place gave her the creeps. "Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink..." Her moaning was cut short as she looked at a nearby tree. It wasn't much but maybe it could help. "Hold on a second while I climb... this tree. Maybe I can see further and get a breath of cleaner air for a moment."

She said "climb" but rather than scramble up side, she simply took a moment to steady herself and angle the fish skeleton on her back toward the top of the tree before pulling a cord attached to the back of it. With a *shunk!* a harpoon with a rope attached shot out and stuck into the top of the tree! With just a little bit of difficulty from her shortness of breath, she pulled herself up to the top of it and took a deep breath. It wasn't as refreshing as the sea, but it was a much-needed reprieve from the oppressive fumes below.

Peoria tried to look out into the distance, but couldn't see much on the ground due to the haze of the swamp. She did spot something that seemed like a disturbance up ahead as a flock of crows scattered into the sky. She called back down to Hansel "It's hard to tell from here, but something's scaring the birds up ahead a little ways! I'll see if I can't get closer to give you better directions!" With that she collected her harpoon from the tree trunk and positioned herself to jump toward the next nearest tree. She felt like if she stayed near the ground she'd be a burden, so she would try to keep herself above the thickest of the fog. She jumped with her arms spread out to glide toward the next tree closer to the scared birds, catching herself on a branch a little below the top where Hansel would be able to see her a little bit.

Meanwhile, on the ground, things were unnaturally still. Any living creatures in the area were either hiding or driven off and a scent of death was in the air even distinguishable from the normal bog stank.

He could see some of the tracks left by the beast, but the damn goopy ground of the swamp was swallowing them up faster than snow prints in a blizzard. How was he supposed to find the giant frog like this? You'd think it would be easy, considering how big it is.

At Peoria's suggestion, the boy looked over at her, a little concerned. The girl had been swaying around because of the fumes. Wouldn't it be dangerous to let her climb a tree? What if she fell? Well, it was better than standing around and doing nothing. He helped the girl up before she began climbing up the tree. The young man made sure to keep an eye on her, ready to catch her if she ever fell. Thankfully, she managed to keep her grip, and seemed to be getting better the higher up she got. He waited patiently at the bottom of the tree, waiting to hear any possible good news.

And good news he got. Something stirring up the birds on ahead? That had to be it! What else could it be? Well, possibly anything else in this swamp, but Hansel had to hope that it was their target. He had only been in here for ten minutes and already felt like he would need to shower for a whole day.

"I'll go on ahead and check it out!" Hansel called out to her, "Be careful coming back down. Don't want you falling into this gunk!" Hefting the large ball in his hand, Hansel began to push his way through the swamp. This damn place was like a soup of stink! That damn frog better turn up soon!

Up ahead was a pool of murky waters which had bubbles rising from center and splotches of the surface were red with fresh blood as a few scaly chunks of what probably used to be an alligator bobbed to the surface.

A breath of relatively fresh air worked wonders for Peoria's senses and she could see Hansel moving toward the disturbance up ahead, so she decided to do the same. With her harpoon still in hand, she jumped off of her perch and glided toward her next point of lookout, the thickness of the air below her helped her stay aloft for a little longer, but the branch she touched on next was partially rotted and creaked loudly on her landing! Before she could even react to the sound of the branch, a loud *pop* broke the surface of the water as a tongue as thick as a tree branch shot out from the center of pool!

Peo cried out in surprise and hastily jumped as the branch she was on snapped off the tree and fell a few feet away from Hansel! The tongue retracted as fast as it had shot out and the Mongrut wriggled up out of the mud and its eyes followed the fishgirl as she glided overhead. She took the opportunity to shoot at it a couple of times with her Needle Guppies but the needles had little effect on the beast's thick hide and it simply shuddered a bit like it had a sudden itch.

Since she had the Mongrut's attention the whole time, she scarcely touched down on the ground before the beast's tongue fired itself at her again and wrapped around her leg, yanking Peoria off her feet and dragging her through the filth! Her vision was hazy at best with a combination of the natural stank of the swamp as well as her being violently jerked to the ground. She fired her needle guppies randomly at the beast as it reeled her in.

As Hansel walked through the grime, he couldn't see anything that gave a hint of where the creature was. I mean, there were the remains of a gator, but who knew how long that had been laying there. No tracks or anything. He was starting to dislike swamps. And the smell. The smell!

Suddenly a long tongue shot out of the murk, straight at Peoria. Thankfully the fishgirl jumped from her branch, dodging its attack, and before Hansel's eyes the massive toad emerged from the pool. So it was here! Who'd have thought something so big was good at hiding? The creature didn't seem to notice him as it was watching the fishgirl as she flew past, shooting at it. The monstrous toad shot out its tongue again, this time catching her in the leg. He watched as she hit the ground with a splat, slowly being dragged in.

"Hey!" Hansel shouted out, heading towards the beast, flail at the ready, "Leave her alone!" He swung his flail at the distracted toad, intent on bringing the ball down right onto its head. He was going to pound this damn frog flat, especially since it seemed to completely forget about what he had done to it earlier.

Haru opened his eyes with everything being blurry slowly coming into focus as the seconds passed. He felt a resounding pain on the back of his head and as he went to go rub it he felt a tug on his other arm and not much motion. He more or less had an idea of what it was he was pulling and it was confirmed it as his vision returned a little bit showing brown masses around his wrists and ankles. He was bound by rope in a very unfamiliar place that smelled horrible and felt murky.

"What In the world is going on?" he thought to himself as he shifted around a bit to get himself to a sitting position. "Last thing I remember is, wait, what was I doing?" he then started to recall the last things he remembered as it sorta played back in his head.

--------------------------------------------------------
He had arrived at the island safely enough though he didn't dock at a port but instead sorta just pulled up near the island and got off. For all he knew there was no port since he sorta just drifted here aimlessly not knowing the name of the island or any of the dangers that lied within. He was pretty hopeful though since he had a new island to explore and new people to meet. He actually preferred to walk the path less traveled though he might come to regret it.

As he headed into the swamp he began to hold his breathe for the stank that it gave off was pretty bad. After a few steps in he was already having problems since sandals and wet murky places didn't mix to well. He kicked them off and poured a little water on them before throwing them into his bag. He was used to trekking around barefoot so it was no big deal to him. After an hour or so of wandering around aimlessly he decided to take a break and leaned against a tree. almost immediately after that though he heard a branch snapped around his right shoulder. As he turned to see what it was he felt a sharp pain against the back of his head and lost consciousness falling into the murky swamp.

--------------------------------------------------------

He reached both his hands over his head and rubbed the spot he had been hit in. "Somebody must have caught me off guard, but what do they plan to do with me," he pondered as he looked around seeing what looked like a residence. His eyes caught upon something sharp in this murky mess but before he could make his way towards it he heard footsteps in the slosh and fell back down hoping to go unnoticed.

The heavy flail came down on the Mongrut's head as planned, but the softness of the gooey ground underneath it meant that much of the force was mitigated as the beast let the force push it into the murk below. One thing definitely hurt it though, and that was that the power of the hit had caused it to bite its tongue! Tough and slimy as it was, the beast's teeth didn't sever the tongue but definitely messed it up pretty good and it released its hold on Peo as it sank into the muddy water.

As it rose from the mud once again, Mongrut let loose a thunderous croak that caused ripples in the mud around it before forcefully jumping deeper into the swamp. As it fled, a scratchy old woman's voice echoed faintly through the area. "Oh, my little Mongrut! Did you hurt yourself playing with your food? Naughty boy!" It was hard to tell where the voice was coming from as the sound seemed to pass between the reeds in ways that normal sound waves wouldn't naturally behave.
-----

Peoria was covered in terribly sticky mud and didn't get back onto her feet immediately. She had been in a panic at nearly being eaten as well as suddenly getting a face full of the terrible swamp gases and she was feeling pretty weak as a result. She really needed to find a way to improve the effectiveness of her needle guppies considering the fact that they were completely useless against Mongrut's hide.

"I wasn't even tied to a post this time... and I still needed rescuing. Why am I so helpless, Eureka?" She was still laying on her back, her eyes tearing up both from her frustration at being weak as well as simply from the oppressive fumes irritating them. She slowly struggled back onto her feet, slipping her Fishbone Launcher off of her back to support her as she walked to her twice-savior. "I'm sorry to need saving so much. With all this muck on me, my fins are too heavy to glide, so now I can't even climb the trees to scout ahead... I hate this swamp!"

The fishgirl trudged along slowly, trying to keep herself steady. She was pretty obviously miserable and more than a little upset. There had to be some fresh water somewhere in this awful place! She needed just a moment of fresh air and a chance to clean herself off, the thick filth of the place just made her feel trapped.

----
Across the poorly lit space was Haru's rifle leaning against a wall. Moving toward him was a short, withered old thing holding a knotted stick covered in mushrooms and topped with a skull. "Oh good! You're awake, dearie!" Something in the way she said the last word seemed a little off. "It's dangerous to wander these swamps alone, you never know what creatures may be hiding in the murk and mists, ehehehee!"

She placed a bizarre looking fruit at his feet and a dinged, rusted knife at his feet, a crooked toothy smile cracked through her lips "You're free to leave, little boy, but keep your strength up. The Mongrut should be close and he prefers lively prey!" She perked up and listened as a rumbling croak traveled across the air "Though perhaps his prey is a little more lively today than he bargained for! Silly little thing..."

She picked up a jar full of buzzing insects and shook it before whispering something into it and setting them loose. She was a strange old hag and certainly far from innocent, but she didn't seem intent on harming Haru directly.

The attack landed dead center! Hansel felt a flash of pride as the beast chomped on its own tongue, releasing Peoria before retreating into the swamp. Hansel's smirk turned to an annoyed grimace. Dammit, was the thing running again? Why couldn't it stay here and fight!? He tried to move after it, but the thick goop that was the swamp held him back long enough for the toad to escape. Dammit, why wasn't this muck inhibiting its movements too? "Get back here!" he yelled out, clearly annoyed.

Then a voice spoke up. A faint voice, and a strange one, but a voice none the less. The boy paused, looking around to try and see where it was coming from, but there was no telling in this damn place. His annoyance gave way to confusion. Was this giant frog somebody's pet? That was a heck of a pet, though they should do a better job of keeping it under control.

His attention was drawn to the fishgirl as she spoke up. A look of sadness crossed over his face as the girl looked like she was about to burst into tears. She was really taking all this hard. As she pulled herself to her feet and hobbled towards him, Hansel moved to meet her half way. "Hey, don't get yourself down," Hansel said in a comforting tone, wrapping an arm around her to support her, "You did help us find it after all. And I mean, it's not like you were expecting to be trudging through a swamp fighting a giant frog monster." He wasn't sure how he was doing, but he had to say something to her, right? "Anyway, let's keep looking. It's got to be around here somewhere. I'm guessing you heard that voice too? If so, maybe we can find its owner or something."

Supporting her weight, the two would head deeper into the swamp, following where the Mongrut had disappeared to.
