Serana looked out from the deck of the ship towards their destination: the kingdom of Ilusia, the only country in all four Blues to have a seat in the World Government's Council of Kings. The vessel that she and Valta were actually sailing on was a temporary one, the good Commander Sanders giving them a ride from Wild Wild West. They hadn't even finished their reports on the gang of hippies they had taken down before they were given yet another assignment and shipped off. That was several days ago, and as far as they knew, they could have been promoted by now. Then again, that wasn't too terribly likely; paperwork was a pain, and usually it took at least a couple days for that stuff to get processed. Plus they would have most likely called in Commander Sanders on the Den Den to inform them of that, though she guessed they could have just decided to inform the Marines at the Ilusia base to let them know upon arrival. Whatever, that didn't really matter to Serana. What did was their assignment: it looks like there was a rather big shot pirate who had wandered back into the Blues from the Grand Line. While they eventually figured out what that weird hippie Oingo Ringo with a 55M bounty was doing in the West Blue (turns out he was trying to "free" animals all across the Grand Line before discovering how Wild Wild West was a huge exporter in beef and cow products), the Marines had absolutely no clue what this guy was doing here. Matthew "Mercury" Billows was a lieutenant of this big shot Pirate in the Grand Line, Captain Josiah "Jupiter" Underwood of the Astral Pirates, who had a whopping bounty of 100,000,000 Beli. And this Billows guy wasn't exactly a push over either: lying at 59 million, he was way too much for the Marines in the West Blue to handle. Hell, the only reason Serana and Valta were being sent to take this guy in was because they had just taken down the aforementioned hippie, thus proving themselves strong enough to solve this problem without a Grand Line branch having to come in and interfere. Still, it was rather pathetic in her eyes that they had allowed this guy to just hole up on Ilusia like this. I mean he wasn't exactly terrorizing the citizens or anything, but Ilusia was renown for being an extremely safe island with an absurdly low crime rate; just the unchecked presence of the guy on the island was enough to do damage to their reputation. It seems like he had been there for only two weeks, with the Marines only finding out recently, and there was no way of telling if he was permanently relocating. The orders were clear: meet up with the leading officers at the Marine Base and coordinate an attack on "Mercury," taking him down for good. |

The World Government. Valta had gotten a bit of a briefing on them when she accepted the offer to join the Marines but it wasn't like she particularly cared about them. Even though they were who the Marine's worked for, all Valta really wanted to do was punch Pirates and being a Marine meant being able to do that. In that vein, Justice wasn't really much of a concern to her past it being an excuse to punch pirates. It was a pretty straightforward life. So with that in mind, the fact that a pirate being in this place being more pressing than other pirates was a bit strange to her, but she wasn't the one in charge. There were a lot of Marines out there so this was probably just a case of them sending her after ones that she was better suited to punch. Since the duo were getting close to the island they were heading towards, Valta was out on deck, looking out towards it with her perpetual angry face. During the trip she had taken to resting a lot to recover from the last mission so she was now re-energized and ready to take up even more fighting. It wasn't a longing for fighting or a challenge that drove her, just pure rage that had fermented over those long years in the cold. In a sense she fought for Justice then. An Absolute Justice so pure that it transcended the concept of Justice entirely, but debating the philosophy of what drove such a simple lifestyle would probably end up fruitless. There were Pirates on that island. She was suppose to find them and punch them. That's what she wanted to do and that's what she was told to do, simple as that. If anything it was just Absolute. |

Serana looked to her side and saw that Valta had joined her out on deck. With her face seemingly burning in anger, Serana could tell that her fellow Marine was ready to bring the metaphorical hammer down on some Pirates. Then again, the girl always looked like that; she was kind of just an angry person in general. Not that Serana really cared; she herself was prone to losing her temper every now and then, and few things gave her as much satisfaction in life as beating up criminals. "Ready to punch some bad guys?" she asked Valta, though she was pretty confident she already knew the answer. After the docked on the island, Commander Sanders told her to go ahead and take a boat upriver to the capital while he dealt with docking and the logistics. Now that she thought about it, she never actually asked the Captain why his ship was coming towards Ilusia in the first place. It was the eastern most island in this Blue, which means it was unlikely it was just on the way. Unless.... perhaps he was going to the Grand Line? But if that was the case, then why wouldn't the Marines provide him with a Seastone Hull ship so that he could travel across the Calm Belt? Or perhaps they weren't planning on going up the mountain in the first place and were simply going to travel over the Red Line itself? Lemme tell you, travel into the Grand Line was interesting to say the least. Serana and Valta proceeded to do as instructed and got off the boat, heading towards a rather large shack like building that seemed to facilitate incoming and outgoing river boats. Upon seeing the two Marines approach, a young boy probably no older than 13 or 14 jumped out of his seat and immediately ran inside. By the time they reached the building, the boy was already on the river in a boat for the two of them, beckoning them over. Perhaps this was just courtesy considering they were Marines, but Serana sniffed a different aura coming from the boy: fear. |

Valta turned to look towards Serana as she spoke up, simply nodding to indicate her readiness, not that there was any question she would be. It's basically all she lived to do after all. While still short to not spoken, Valta did seem like she was more comfortable interacting with Serana then before their first mission. She just wasn't the kind of person that opened up by talking more. Following her superior officer off of the boat and towards, well, another boat it wasn't that surprising that the boy was moving quickly in fear. Serana and Valta were probably more intimidating than the normal Marines that came through. Not that Valta was all that used to having people do things for her out of fear, but it wasn't an emotion she wasn't used to seeing. The boy didn't seem to be afraid due to being a pirate, just some general intimidation, so past that she paid him no mind. Getting in to the boat she sat down and waited for it to get moving. An advantage of working under someone is that she didn't have to waste effort to talk to get things done. She could probably afford to relax a bit on that part of her nature, but there was no need for it. Living so long where getting too tired by doing too much superfluous action or talking could mean death it was a hard habit to break. After all, if she did then all of that time spent clinging to life would be wasted. For that, she just needed to keep moving forward. Survive and take revenge on Pirates. Nothing else really mattered, and that included talking. As long as the point she was trying to make got across then spending time on as few words as possible was the best way to do it. |

Serana didn't really care if the boy was afraid of her or not; it's not like it was the Marine's job to make sure they were all liked or anything. Sure, it helped public morale and trust and what not, but generally speaking the power they held trumped personal opinions of them. Anyways, the boat eventually began to sail westward and towards Ilusia City, carrying Serana, Valta, and the boy along with it. She wasn't exactly sure how much time passed, but they eventually reached the outskirts of the city proper; in the distance they could see the King's Castle, home to not only the royal family but the most important citizens of Ilusia, surrounded by thick walls and the moat at the end of this river. There was a station to let people off right at the edge, but their boat continued inwards. When they reached about two fifths of the way to the castle, the boy finally brought the boat to a stop. On the north side was a small dock and then a path leading up to a rather large building: the Marine base. Some might question why the base wouldn't be right next to the castle, but it turns out that the royal family guard was very strong and powerful in their own right; between them and the Marine base, no region in Ilusia city was out of their reach, hence why the city had a near 0 percent crime rate. Of course, that was limited to just inside the city, but that's why they were there, right? Saying farewell to the boy and giving him a small tip, Serana proceeded to enter the Marine base with Valta. After showing their credentials, one of the Marines at security realized that they were expecting the pair and proceeded to escort them further into the base, up to the presiding Captain's office. The door was wide open, and the security guard directed them to step in. Inside at the desk was a rather old looking man with a balding head and a long, wispy white beard. He was draped in typical Marine garb and had a monocle resting on his left eye, though Serana wasn't quite sure whether he actually needed it or if he just wanted to look older and more professor-like. The Captain was doing some paper work, but upon hearing the pair enter, he proceeded to place down his pen and raise his head. "Ahh yes, you must be Lt. Commander Valdís and CWO Valta. Please, sit down." He pointed towards two chairs, and Serana proceeded to sit as directed. Once the two were situated, he proceeded to bring his hands together, fingers interlocked. "Now I assume you read the preliminary report, no? Anything you wish to ask about or clarify, or can I go ahead and get into the nitty gritty details?" |

As the boat got moving Valta's perpetual case of angry face probably did little to ease the fears of the boy that was operating the boat for them. It was uncertain if Valta could really display any emotion that wasn't at least a little angry at this point. Her face might be permanently stuck that way even if her Endless Rage was somehow ended. Sort of like when parents tell their children to not frown too much or their face would get stuck like that. Valta lost the people that might have warned her about that so there wasn't much she could do about it. For now though she was just visibly angry and always actually angry, but it was just simmering. Left on a low heat that could be brought back up at a moment's notice. Once they reached their stop Valta got off and followed behind Serana. Thankfully she handled all of the stuff needed to get them to who they were supposed to talk to. They were quickly led to the room of some old guy. He was higher in rank than either of them which meant she was supposed to do what he said, and would, but he hadn't earned her respect yet like Serana had so she wouldn't be as amicable to him as she was towards Serana. Still, it was hard to tell she was more nice to some people than others given her constant anger. Moving to the chair that Serana wasn't she sat down looking at the monocle'd man. She got the gist of the mission. There were Pirates to punch. She just needed to be pointed at them and get to punching. Not voicing any questions, or much of anything, she waited for Serana to move the conversation forward to the nitty gritty details. |

Serana was certain that Valta wouldn't have any questions, but she gave pause just to make sure. It wasn't much of a pause, however, as Serana began to speak up once more. "No, I think we are fine, Captain," Serana began, realizing at the moment that she didn't even know the Captain's name, though she didn't care enough to ask it. All she needed to know that while he seemed a bit old and on the wrong side of his peak, they didn't just assign Captains to the Blues at whim, and not just anyone would be assigned to be in charge of the Ilusia Marine Base. This guy was the real deal, whether he looked like it or not. "Very good," the Captain responded, bringing out some of his personal documents himself and began to review them. "Let's see, this "Mercury" fellow has been mostly keeping to himself in Maple Leaf Forest to the far west. Most people don't go around those parts, and so we have no real idea how long he's been there. But but a few days ago, he and his crew attempted a raid on the city. The guards managed to hold them from getting too deep into the city, and they ran away when we Marines arrived. We then resolved to guard the location more securely for the upcoming days while we sent for help, for you." The Captain let out a sigh, and a sense of dread appeared on his face. "But we should have known something was up when a man as infamous as Mercury was driven away so easily... "This past evening, after midnight, the crew struck again. They did it in the same place, but we didn't think any of it at the same time; just figured it was typical stupid pirate behavior. But after awhile, we noticed something was off: Mercury was nowhere to be found. The one leading the raid was a woman known as Veronica "Venus" Summers, a subordinate of Mercury with her own bounty of 16,000,000. They also stayed longer before routing, despite fighting both the guards and the Marines and without Mercury backing them up. We received word not too much later that Mercury had mounted a solo raid on the castle itself during the fight; we were distracted, and as a result he managed to escape with a precious royal family artifact. You're mission is to infiltrate the Maple Leaf Forest and retrieve that artifact. If you can, subdue Mercury and Venus as well, but the artifact is more important." The Captain stopped his briefing, and Serana was left with many questions. Why were the Marines so easily tricked? Why wasn't the castle still guarded heavily? But most importantly, "Just what is this artifact, exactly?" The Captain paused before responding rather firmly, "That's not important. You'll know it when you see it. Now if there aren't any other questions, I'd like this to get settled immediately." Alright, she got the message: don't ask about the potential doomsday artifact. Got it. Standing up, Serana excused herself from the room and departed with Valta. As soon as they had left and were gone from view, the Marine proceeded to violently slam her fist into the wall, making it shake slightly and causing a picture frame hanging to almost fall off. "Damn it, I hate it when they do that. How can they possibly trust us to retrieve something when they don't trust us enough to tell us what it is?" |

Valta listened intently as she Captain began to go in to detail about their mission. It was pretty simple. Find pirates, punch pirates, find thing, don't punch thing. Not being too skilled in the art of Bureaucracy, his vagueness didn't really register when it came to what the artifact was. Even if she were alone she might not even ask to know more about it since it wasn't a detail she actually cared about, but then again that's why she liked having someone like Serana around to worry about that stuff. Made her job easier. That was until they left the room and Serana displayed anger, a feeling Valta knew all too well: Anger. It was something that she wasn't really used to handling from this angle, someone else's anger that wasn't directed at her. The normally short-spoken girl was at a loss for words. It was hard for someone so used to not talking to figure out what she should do or say in this situation. She usually just had a one track mind herself so to be presented with a quandary outside of it just compounded the problem. Standing there staring up at Serana with her face stuck in a state of angry she said all she could really bring herself to say. ”Find thing. Whatever thing is. Sometimes... Can't choose what happens...” She balled her hands up in to fist. ”Move forward. Worked this long... Take rage...” She punched the air in front of her. ”Punch forward. Live tomorrow...” Hopefully her point got across, as short and broken as it was. It really seemed like life back in society had hardships just like life in the wild did. Like then, all she could say was to move forward. After all, if she didn't she wouldn't be standing there next to Serana at the moment. |

Serana glanced over at her companion, her eyes still burning with a bit of rage. But somehow, the words of her fellow Marine managed to calm her a bit. Despite the broken nature of Valta's words, she got the message across clear: sometimes you have to just shrug and move on. No use worrying about shit that you can't control. Letting out a laugh, Serana removed her fist from the wall. "Hehe, guess you're right. Thanks, Valta." The white haired Marine stretched her arms out forward with her fingers interlocked, cracking her knuckles a bit before bringing them back down to her sides. "So let's get on with the punching, eh?" After leaving the Marine base, Serana and Valta proceeded to get back on their boat (the poor boy looked a bit terrified when he realized they had gotten back so soon) and proceeded to move further west up the river. Eventually, they made their way to the moat that surrounded the castle on the edge of the city. Though the moat itself wasn't necessarily dangerous or anything (not like there were freshwater crocodiles lying in it), there was never really any reason for boats to move around in it, and thus it was blocked off for transportation access. Giving the boy their thanks, Serana left him with some Beli as a tip before disembarking with Valta. It would have been nice if they could have cut directly through the castle to minimize travel, but unfortunately there wasn't an exit on the west side of the castle, most likely because there never was any reason for the castle residents to venture out that direction. Instead, the pair walked alongside the south side of the moat until eventually they came towards the edge of the city proper. After a couple minutes of searching, they found a stable that rented out horses for people who wanted to take a trip through the local woods without having to walk. Of course when procuring two horses for the duo, Serana didn't mention that she would be taking them to the Maple Leaf Forrest; she had a strong feeling that he'd refuse to lend them out to them out in that case in fear of something happening to them. Mounting her horse, Serana muttered under her breath, "Didn't think I'd be going horseback riding again so soon..." At least it kind of fit the theme of Wild Wild West; here it was kind of just a cheap method of land transportation. Turning towards Valta, Serana gave a thumbs-up. "Ready?" |

Valta nodded up at Serana after her small amount of words seemed to get through to her superior officer, smiling as she said they should get on with the punching. Despite the happiness that smile implied her perpetual anger just made her look sinister and not happy. Truly she was a bit twisted, but her head was still mostly on right. Following Serana out of the base and returning to the poor rowing boy her sinister expression was still present, which probably did little to help his terror. After all she was angry when he first saw her and now she looked both angry and excited. It was a very good thing that he was not what she was pointed at. The boat right was uneventful and eventually they go to where they needed to go. Then it was back to being on foot until they got to horses. Like last time she stared the one for her in the eyes before jumping on to it's back. She had to show it who was boss after all. It was just as much of a good thing for it as it was for the boy that it wasn't her prey. The urge to punch was rising with all of this travel. She could only hope there were some nice pirates to relieve her rage for the moment. Looking over to Serana as she thumbs up at her, Valta replied with her own thumbs up and a nod. |

Serana and Valta proceeded to gallop towards the forest. Perhaps they could have conserved some of their steeds' energy and gone slower, but there was a nagging feeling inside Serana that they needed to get their quickly. After all, had the pirates successfully stolen a valuable artifact last night, would they even still be here? If that artifact was their end goal, they'd probably try and be leaving as soon as possible, though Serana had good reason to believe that despite their lack of presence in the Maple Leaf Forest, the Marines or royal guard would know if a pirate ship had been leaving that side of the island. Come to think of it, wasn't logical to look around the island's shores in the first place to see if they could find a ship and then just set up a type of blockade. Or maybe...... was there no a ship docked at the island in the first place? Shaking off the thoughts, Serana focused on the path ahead of her. She couldn't be focused on what choices the higher ups made, or whether or not they were doing their due diligence for this job. She could only control what she had been asked to do, and that meant she had to focus on tracking down this Mercury bastard and bringing back whatever it was she was looking for. Hurrying her horse up, Serana began to move even faster, with Valta right behind her, until they began to approach the forest edge. At that point, they went ahead and slowed down, going down to a slow walk and eventually a full stop right outside the trees. "They probably have sentries out," Serana remarked to Valta. "I'm surprised there don't seem to be many at the edge, but maybe that's because they're afraid of being seen themselves. Or perhaps they're just that cocky...." Serana trailed off a bit and thought to herself a bit before getting an idea. "Can you get off your horse and scout ahead a bit? See if you can find anyone, or at the least some tracks that might take us to their camp?" |

Valta followed quickly behind Serana on her horse. She thought nothing of how much they were rushing to the forest. After all, her eagerness to get to work being as strong as it was made it easy to understand why one would try to hurry, even more so since it was her steed's stamina at expense to get them there faster. She didn't need to worry about tiring herself out. That was a great advantage of this method of travel. Once they reached the edge of the forest they slowed to a stop and Serana told her to scout around. Nodding Valta hopped off of her horse and began to look around, much like she did when she scouted the buffalo. This was much easier given the lack of other track noise and she spotted some walkpaths being made by, well, walking. Nodding she looked down the way it seemed to go before moving over to the side quickly and then climbing up a tree. From the top of the tree she began to hop from tree to tree, slowly as to make well timed and placed jumps to make as little noise as possible. She moved away from Serana in to the forest so it was getting hard to see her. After a bit there was the sound of a scream, not Valta's, and a thud as something dropped out of a tree further ahead. A few minutes later a couple other lookouts rushed over to see what had happened to the one that was knocked out and Valta pounced, dropping from the tree and grabbing their heads, bonking them together. Three unconscious lookouts in tow she dragged them back to where Serana and the horses were. She set the pile of pirates down and hoped that her superior officer had handcuffs or rope for them. They were just lookouts. By no means the big names that would be worth much, but Pirates were Pirates. Punching them felt good. |

OOC Serana had to admit that a sense of nervousness rushed down her spine when she heard the scream, but it quickly left as her mind recognized immediately that it wasn't Valta. Her muscles remained tense, however, as she was prepared to enter combat, but to her relief no further noise came, meaning Valta had likely taken down one of the sentries like a lion takes down its prey. It wasn't too terribly long after that that she saw her subordinate drag three unconscious bodies back towards her, to which Serana couldn't help buet smirk in joy. "That's what I like to see.." Serana remarked as she proceeded to procure some rope from a pack hanging on her horse. They couldn't really drop what they were doing right now, but she figured it would be fine to simply tie them up against a tree on the far edge. The Marine grabbed some fabric from the pack as well and stuffed it in their mouths as gags, just in case they woke up sometime soon. It would have been nice if at least one of them was conscious so they could do some interrogating, but that hopefully wouldn't be needed. "Alright, were there any tracks we can follow? Or are we going to have to go in this forest blind?" |

OOC Valta helped tie up the pirates she had brought back. Hopefully they could wrap this up quickly, not because she didn't want to fight anymore, but if they had to just keep tying up pirates they would probably run out of rope. That was a problem she didn't really have to deal with when she simply fought to survive, but in having to earn her keep she actually had to carry what she fought some distance. Once that was done, Serana asked if there was a trail to follow. Valta nodded and made her way back into the forest. There wasn't much of a trail but it was enough for her to follow. People had been moving through the forest and unless they were all trained in a way to cover their tracks perfectly it would cause some disturbances that could be tracked. Getting low to the ground she started to follow it, keeping an eye and ear out for anyone that might notice them sneaking along to wherever the pirates had hid themselves, but hopefully Serana would be backing her up on that. |

Once Valta confirmed that there were indeed tracks for them to follow, Serana proceeded to get off her mount and coax the two horses over to a somewhat secluded part of the forest so she could tie them up. She would have preferred to have them handy for a quick getaway, but they would honestly probably be more of a hindrance getting out if the forest floor got really cluttered and uneven as they traveled deeper in. Not to mention that it would be hard to try and muffle the steps of the horses, and they needed to be in full sneak mode. So Serana resolved to leave them be near some notable landmarks, relying on her own memory to lead them back here when they were ready to leave. After assuring the horses that they would be back soon (or at least tried to the best she could with a language the horses couldn't understand and the bribery of food), the two Marines departed. The duo followed the tracks in silence, or rather Serana was following Valta who was doing the actual tracking. With the latter's focus on the path ahead of them, Serana was doing her best to scout their surroundings and make sure they weren't ambushed, or to see if she could spot something notable about the surroundings. Fortunately, it didn't seem like there was anyone ready to come crashing down on them any time soon, and it seemed like the tracks were a rather straight forward path back to some sort of home base. Unfortunately, they weren't really that lucky; the tracks would eventually end up dead ending into an abandoned camp, several tents still up and the coals in the fire pit still hot. Though unlike before, there didn't seem to be any one set of tracks leading out; there were traces of people coming and going from all sides. Letting out a sigh of disappointment, Serana turned to Valta, hoping she might have some insight into the situation before beginning to search the camp for any further clues. |
