“Hey, do you know about the Demon Butcher?”

“The Serial Killer, right? How terrifying.”

“They found another victim last night. Shot right through the temple.”

“How have the authorities not caught the culprit yet? Those government dogs are just useless. What a waste of our tax money.”

“Maybe they can’t catch him. Maybe the killer really is a demon.”

“The island just isn’t safe lately.”

With discreet attention, Marie listened to the idle chit chat of a few women in the street. She had simply gone out to do some grocery shopping, but was unsurprised to hear the topic of conversation. The gossipers’ voices were filled with unease, like they were talking behind their boss’s back, always fearing what would happen if he heard them. It made Marie rather pleased. The light tang of hesitation and anxiety dripping from their lowered whispers ran a nice chill through Marie’s spine. That they would be discussing her legacy in daylight was a testament to the increasing fear of the Demon Butcher.

“Although, I personally would’ve liked it if they could’ve came up with a cooler nickname for me…”

She finished paying for her onions and carrots, and was soon on her way. While she walked back to her peaceful abode, Marie’s thoughts still lingered on the gossip from earlier. One of them had mentioned another victim found the night prior. However, that was not her handiwork. Truth be, she had just been discharged from the medical clinic/infirmary/whatever one should call the island’s poor replacement for a proper hospital. It was not too long ago she had been injured in an encounter with a strange man in an alleyway, so she had been left to rest in stitches for the past few days. As such, under medical supervision, there was no way for her to have killed the man they had mentioned. Which meant that his death was entirely unrelated to her and had only ended up being recorded as the Demon Butcher’s handiwork. The thought brought ambivalent emotions to Marie. On one hand, it showed that the Demon Butcher myth was powerful enough to even cover other events. On the other, it meant the fear of the Demon Butcher no longer equaled a fear of her. Well, she supposed that fear itself was nice to witness so it didn’t really matter.

Anyways, the victim was not one of hers. Besides, it didn’t fit her modus operandi either. A shot to the head leaves little enjoyment. Are they even sure it wasn’t just suicide? If it was up to her, she would’ve liked to have tried forcing his head into the ocean, drowning him and feeling the thrashing beat of his resistance slowly fade as the water filled his lungs and his consciousness faded. Yes, then just before he suffocated, she’d pull him back up for a few seconds of air before dunking his head back in. Now, that was fun…

Her arm twitched. Her left hand holding her groceries began to ever slightly shake. A creeping feeling crawled up her forearm, promoting an irresistible urge to manifest in her brain. It itched. Perhaps it was the thought of having fun but the desire to kill began to rise within her. Her hand gripped harder on the grocery bags. Yosh, since she was just released from medical care, she might as well celebrate with some fun tonight…

A crowd was beginning to form. Hushed cries and mutters echoed between them as they looked upon the site with horror. Their eyes were all focused on the same thing: a mutilated corpse. It was found not to far from active civilization, a still body in another alleyway. The walls of the alley were painted red. The front of the man’s chest was ripped open, revealing the inside, and the head was hardly recognizable after the evident pummeling it took. As the final topping, a knife had been driven through the victim’s neck, pinning it to the wall of the alley, like a poster held in place with a thumbtack. Even for the now somewhat well-known Demon Butcher, the murder was rather flamboyant in presentation. Marines were policing the sight, urging the civilians to head home. It was certainly nothing pretty to look at.

Several blocks away, Marie looked up at the sky. The night was far from over yet, still supporting nightlife. She stood in a somewhat empty street, lost in her own world and paying little attention to her surroundings. Though her breath had been erratic only moments ago, it was now releasing a quiet, heavy sigh. She could see her breath. It was cold, yet she was not wearing much. In stark contrast to her usually snug warm attire, her dress was very light that night. A slightly oversized, long sleeve blouse and low cut mini skirt wrapped around her body. Even so, a still-bloodied weapon was hidden under them.

The unbearable chill provided a nice sensation upon her skin. It distracted her from the feeling burrowing into her chest. Only moments ago, she had seen someone’s life vanish before her eyes, yet she was not smiling. Instead she was left unsatisfied. The itch had not disappeared and the only she gained was this strange sensation in her chest. All while she ripped the person apart, sharp memories flooded her conscience. All enjoyment was sapped away and she left with nothing but a finally dead body and emptiness.

Through the overhead clouds, she could somewhat make out the moon. She basked in its dim light. A faint blue glow fell upon her surroundings. She found herself speaking out randomly, with no care for anyone around to here.

“Tonight, the moon sure is ugly.”

Caius' ears rang as the shot rang out, the young man in front of him crumpling to the floor. He holstered his revolver as the anger faded from his face taking a deep breath to calm himself down. The insolent thug had the balls to try and mug him! HIM of all people! He honestly couldn't believe people these days. He would have had mercy if his mugger had just put away the knife but instead he just kept insisting that the prince hand over his Beli. To Caius, this was an act of treason and traitors deserved nothing less than death.

As the young pirate walked out of the alley and into the streets he could hear the sounds of foot steps rushing towards him no doubt alerted from the gun shot. This didn't bother him at all, he had concluded his business with the body in the alley and would be long gone before anyone would find it. This was also one of the few times he was grateful that he had not earned a bounty yet as no one would ever expect him to be the killer. Caius figured the marines would just write it off as a mugging gone wrong or even better, blame it on the Butcher he was hearing so much about.

He made his way into a bar, the best way to cheer himself up was to get a drink and talk to some of the locals. He had hopes that he would be able to get some clues as to who this butcher was or when they appeared. The 'Prince of the Sea' needed a crew and when he heard about a demon senselessly killing on Karaoke Island he knew who he needed to recruit.

He slammed some Beli down on the bar after he ordered his Ale, looking at the bartender after taking a sip.

"So...Tell me about 'The Butcher'"

----------------------------------------------------------

Caius looked at the body that was nailed to the wall before him, a chill running down his spine. This was a fresh kill from what he could see which meant The Demon Butcher was around somewhere. He looked around for a few seconds to see if maybe he was still in the crowd somewhere but he couldn't find anyone that would fit the profile he was given. A large man with cold dead eyes and a large scar on his face, That wasn't someone who would go unnoticed.

He pushed his way passed the people crowding the mutilated body, he had seen enough of the butchers work to get excited. That excitement gave him goosebumps as he went in search of his new crew member. Caius had decided that regardless of the Butchers answer he would join the crew. The man who had done such gruesome work could only be considered an animal and animals could be tamed.

The prince adjusted his coat has he walked down the empty street immediately stopping when he spotted a small girl. What was she doing here all alone? Didn't she know there was a brutal murder just a few blocks away? Caius felt that it was his royal duty to escort this young lady home immediately to make sure that she wouldn't be the next target.

"Are you lost little miss?" He questioned, walking closer to the girl "It is dangerous out tonight, someone was just killed. We should get you home" He smiled assuredly at her before continuing "I promise no harm will come of you tonight"

Marie gazed upon the moon with jaded eyes. Although she had been in an impassioned frenzy but moments ago, her demeanor had calmed to a lax tempo, like a runner exhausted after a marathon. And in her resting state, she was swept with a sudden urge for poetry, as all men do at times in their life. Of course, she was no literary genius; her knowledge of poem stemmed solely from the retired old artists lazing in sunday cafes. But if they were right, poetry needed not knowledge but heart to express oneself.

Even so, she failed to convey her state in verse. The itchy rash that plagued her torso and arm. The hollow feeling weighing down her chest. The subtle shaking within her knees. How could she express these things when she herself failed to comprehend them? Was her distaste akin to losing one’s appetite by washing a toilet before dinner? Was her melancholy like when one realizes the thing they’ve always wanted was not so good? Such questions were left to philosophers and she was anything but. All she knew was that it felt good when she killed someone, or at least she did before tonight. If only someone could come and answer all her questions…

Abruptly, a voice interrupted her thoughts. She did not so much as flinch though and instead slightly tilted her head to look at the source. It was tall man with red hair and a solid build. He seemed to be addressing her but she did not pay much heed to him. He did not seem to be of any immediate interest and she was far too caught up in her own thoughts to listen. Instead, she found her petite lips began to flap, prompted by the man’s arrival.

“Say, mister. Do you like poetry?”

Her own voice brought her back to her senses. Just what was she doing? There was no merit in confronting this stranger with a strange reaction and a stranger question. Marie quickly corrected her mindset and shook off her own contemplations, though her face remained as blank as ever. She’d make a proper turn to him, this time around, her short skirt twirling in the cold night wind.

“No, nevermind. It’s nothing.” Her gentle voice carried through the breeze, conveying neither distance nor warmth. “Someone was killed nearby, you say?”

Her expression betrayed no surprise though internally she pondered over the news. Without a doubt, she must’ve been the culprit, but what she had not expected was that they had found the body so quickly. Doubtless, this was a sign of her carelessness. Usually, she’d keep the body such that no one would find it until she was well gone, but this time around, the emotions that plagued her caused her to slip up. Careless… dangerous… if she was not careful, someone would interfere next time around.

“Dangerous… yes, it is quite dangerous lately.” She responded as if mulling over the word, like a sommelier might swish wine in his mouth. Truthfully, Marie was in a weird state, not sure if the one in danger was her or everyone else. If it was former, she was not sure what she should do. Still, she saw no reason to turn the man down. He did promise to keep her from harm...

“Will you accompany me then for the night? My house is a far ways off.”

She stuck out her hand, palm down, as if asking for him to take it. She had seen the motion before in a painting, though she knew not what it meant.

Caius stared at the girl, eyebrows raised in curiosity. He wasn't sure what to even make of her at this point. Her first question completely threw him off guard and her follow up answer didn't help him either. It wasn't until her indifference to the murder that suspicions began to rise in him. It wasn't likely that someone of her age would respond to a murder so indifferently unless she had been around death so much it didn't bother her. He could relate to her in that regard, growing up he had seen his own fair share of blood. As a pirate you couldn't avoid it.

The large pirate towered over the smaller girl as he took a closer look, from her coffee colored hair to her white teeth everything was perfectly in order or almost. As he watched the girl he couldn't help but feel a chill run down his spin. It seemed to Caius that her eyes showed no fear, or any emotion at all for that matter. Her hand reached out to him almost mechanically as she asked him to accompany her for the rest of the night. The fact she didn't ask him to just walk her home but accompany her for the rest of the night did not escape him.

To the prince this couldn't be more of a perfect situation, he wasn't sure if the little girl was the demon he had been looking for but it gnawed at the back of his mind. He grinned at her and bowed his head "It would be my pleasure, please lead the way" He would use this opportunity to find out more about this mysterious child. "My Name is Caius Lucifur, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance " He introduced himself hoping that the she would do the same.

A light breeze blew through his hair as it flicked back and forth, reminiscent of a campfire's flame about to die out. The smile never left his face as he started his line of questioning to the lass. "What are you doing out so late and so far from home when a killer is on the loose?" He tried his best not to sound like a scolding parent but he was almost certain he failed. "Aren't your parents worried?"
