Midnight. A time when good kids should be tucked snug in their beds and dreaming sweet dreams. Protected by their warm blankets, they remain unaware of the demons that lurk the night. Insomniacs roaming the streets without aim. Drunk adults hopping from bar to bar. Shady businessmen watching for naive customers. And, of course, the truly bad kids avoiding the law of day. Those were the ones that children truly feared.

Likewise, Marie Lovejoy found herself out in town that night, moving through the dim streets of Karoake Island. The cute, angelic girl was wearing a light blue raincoat over a beige sweater, despite it not raining. She walked somewhat mechanically, with her head down, though not awkwardly enough to catch the attention of a passerby. Her expression was grim as she scanned the poorly lit roads. There was no one around, which upset her greatly. Not that she wanted the place to be crowded, though, as that’d be worse. No, she didn’t want zero people, or a hundred people, or ten or two. Just one. One would be enough.

A twitch ran through her body. Her arm was shaking. It itched. It itched so bad. She wanted to scratch it, she wanted to rub it, she wanted to claw into it. But she knew, she knew from experience, that that would do nothing. No. She’d need something more… solid.

While contemplating her urges, she travelled even deeper into the dark alleyways of the town. Away from normal civilization, where one was more likely to find the likes of drug dealers and prostitutes, she strolled around as if surveying a spring garden.

And then she saw one. A young lady in maybe her twenties. She was hurriedly jogging through the alleyways, from the industrial sectors to the residential areas. In the grey alleyways, she was wearing a rather panicked, disturbed face, running towards Marie’s direction. Perhaps she was in a rush to go home, which was why she had carelessly decided to use the unpopulated alleys as a detour. But it didn’t matter. Nothing about her mattered. All Marie saw was her long limbs, pale skin, and distressed expression. Such a fragile woman… yes, she would make a wonderful sample for the big number 30.

A smile broke out of Marie’s petite face. She pulled up the hood of her raincoat and stepped into the path of the woman. The demon butcher began her fun.

“Time to play~”

Calm had a long trip from hazard mountain especially with how he just mostly traveled by how the sea moved which made him take 3 days to get to an island that he saw a sign floating in the water and read it seeing Karaoke Island that seemed like a well enough name as the first thing he noticed about the island was a thick smog looking at it disgusted for a second before landing on the island.

The first thing he did was go into a restaurant ordering a steak with some water thinking about how the quality of water would be considering the volcano in the center of the island and ordering lung was out of the question because of the smog, After 10 minutes of waiting he ate his food and put down the amount he owed walking out of the shop not trying to drag attention to himself considering marines are usually everywhere except for a place he heard of as a kid called Saint Reia but that place was in ruin.

When Calm walked outside all he saw was darkness and couldn't even see his hands properly because of the thick smog blocking out the moonlight so he started using his staff to make sure he didn't run into any buildings or poles accidentally and walked around for a while trying to find a place to stay for the night before he went into a dark alleyway and yawned cracking his neck after.

"I need to find somewhere to sleep before i pass out outside not like sleeping outside bothers me too much."

Calm walked into the alleyway further seeing a few old looking oil lamps glowing brightly in the darkness of the city and saw multiple drug dealers and what calm would call "night walkers" but he just continued walking ignoring the people but holding onto his staff not particularly wanting to be attacked in the night where it would be more likely of him not being found if he was attacked or killed.

He eventually came to a stop when he saw a girl hearing the words "Time to play" and seeing a rather devilish smile on her face and calm instantly assumed it was something that he didn't want to get involved in but that was the only way forward besides going back and taking the chance of being attacked by more than one person and calm just looked at the girl with a devilish smile yawning and saying.

"A rather vile habit you have there for someone who looks so innocent besides their smile."

Just as Marie had mentally got into the mood, a voice rang out from behind her. Completely unexpected, that gentle relaxed yawn immediately alerted her to the presence of someone behind her. Frozen in place by surprise, she paused her activities to slowly tilt her head towards the speaker. Standing there with a lax posture was a skinny looking man in a dark green yutaka and carrying an iron staff. However, these features didn’t matter much to Marie. Visible disinterest showed through her dull expression towards the man. More importantly, she was mentally reprimanding herself for not noticing his presence earlier.

“Careless. Didn’t notice him earlier. Could’ve interfered with fun. Not good…”
Outside of such thoughts though, she didn’t pay much heed to him. He had said something about a vile habit but she didn’t really understand what he was talking about so she ignored it.

Just as she was thinking such, a sudden movement ran through the corner of her eye. Once again alerted, she snapped her head quickly to see what it was, and realized that it had been the woman from earlier rushing past. This time, Marie was genuinely moved. The woman’s fleeting back grew smaller as she jogged away. Soon, she was out of range. Ah, she escaped. Marie’s precious sample has slipped out of her grasp while she was distracted by the appearance of that man. If it weren’t for him, she’d have been having the time of her life right then. That made Marie just a teeny tiny bit… mad.

Like a machine, she mechanically turned back to that very man who had upset her. He seemed like he wasn’t about to up and leave without some interaction. Taking the chance, Marie quickly examined the area, in detail this time so she wouldn’t miss anybody nearby. They were in a rather wide alleyway, just enough for maybe two people to comfortably walk through shoulder to shoulder. It was dark and if Marie’s analysis was correct there were, for real this time, no senses of life within earshot of the two. Still showing no emotion on her face, she addressed him politely.

“Is there something you need, sir? I’m a little busy at the moment.”

As she spoke, her body twitched a bit. She recalled the burning itch on her arm and once again reflected on what a disappointment it had been to let that woman get away. Though, there wasn’t much she could do now, but to go home and try again tomorrow.

“It’s late tonight. I should be headed home.”

Calm mentally chuckled as he looked at the girl's face turn into what looked like anger and noticed the girl running away as he sighed not bothering to catch her as it would just be a nuisance to him. Calm walked forward holding out his hand to help the girl get off her feet noting that she didn't look evil really without the whole smile thing going on.

"Why don't you just hunt animals it's easier than catching them and will bring less suspicion after all humans hunt all the time.”

He heard her talking about how she was busy along with how she needed to get home and calm sighed slightly thinking his only way of somehow staying at a house for free was gone but he still had to try so he continued trying to talk to the girl not really caring that she was trying to kill someone earlier since he could easily put that forth to the marines on the island and get her arrested.

"I kinda need somewhere to stay for the night and you're about the only person who i've actually met so i was wondering if i could stay at your house for the night.”

Calm chuckled nervously as he asked if he could stay at her house not particularly wanting to sleep out with all the drug dealers and prostitutes on the road and he wasn't sure he would be able to get to a place to stay for the night in the thick darkness that covered the city.

It was a rare feeling. Marie rarely felt much towards people to begin with and the rare feelings she did have mostly resembled interest or appreciation. As such, it was a first for her to feel such utter disgust towards a human being. This man repulsed her to no end. At first, she had but apathy towards him, even after he interrupted her fun. There were no hard feelings; everything could be forgotten after a good night’s sleep. But once he spoke again, her heart skipped a beat.

Why not just hunt animals? He had said such words with nonchalance. They were simply a casual throwaway phrase. Yet, they stomped on what Marie held dear. Who was he to criticize her hobbies? Thinking he’s so clever to have come up with such a suggestion. Does he think she hasn’t hunted animals before? Of course, she has. She’d hunted plenty, and examined every corpse in detail. She knew every nook and cranny of her prey’s biologies. But of course, she would move on. That’s just logical. But, this man didn’t understand. He couldn’t possibly understand her art. And yet… he dared try to butt in. Dare to tell her what was right!? That carelessly arrogant attitude… it stomped on her pride, her love, her life. How could she forget this after sleeping now!?

Despite these raging emotions, however, Marie’s face did not change much, with the slight exception of her glare growing a tad sharper. She stood statically still, seemingly unfazed despite the turmoil inside her mind and her rapidly increasing disgust with the man. In another moment of rare emotion, she felt that she no longer wanted to see him. He was best to be out of her sight and memory as soon as possible.

As such, when he asked if he could stay at her house, her answer was immediate and curt.

“No. I don’t let strangers into my house.”

Once she finished, she simply began to walk past him, paying little heed to his reaction. As she did so, she remembered the weapons hidden inside her clothing. She never got the chance to use them tonight. She probably wouldn’t; the only person around was the man, after all. And he seemed to make for a poor target. He was slim but not fragile; his muscles were probably all too loose. His insides were probably a bad color. His screams were probably boorish. There would be little enjoyment in killing him. Yes, there was no reason to kill him. But-

Abruptly, Marie stopped. Just two steps after walking past the man, she paused and, in one swift motion, reached into her left sweater sleeve to pull out her cleaver. The killing intent she had kept bottled was released all at once.

- might as well kill him anyways.

She pivoted swiftly and silently, holding the cleaver tightly in her right hand. While he was still facing the other way, she would swing with all her might, aiming to chop right into the man’s unaware back.

Calm had noticed her being visibly displeased with him as she glared at him and just sighed as he just thought in his mind “great going you pissed another person off”. He assumed it was because of him saying something about her hobby but he was originally just gonna ask if she would not kill humans until she got off the island as too many people on the island she lived on would know her.

He then heard her say no and that she doesn't let strangers into her house as he just started walking past her as he yawned and decided to just keep looking around for a hotel or somewhere else to stay for the night while thinking that he really needs to get a new boat so he can live on it rather than having to sleep at god knows where constantly.

Although he had pissed her off he was at least slightly happy that he met someone on the island and wondered what to do on the island next that could actually seem like fun hearing a little about art kenpo and he thought of maybe fighting someone who uses it incase he fights it later when he plans to go into the grandline or any of the other islands in the blues.

Calm kept thinking on that before he felt a knife more specifically felt like a cleaver in his back and he would sigh but that would most likely cause more pain and he turned around looking at her as he grabbed his staff glaring at her as he grabbed his staff.

"Well i didn't really plan on seriously fighting anyone but i can't just accept being stabbed in the back can i. "

Calm held up his staff spinning it at high speeds as he whispered Snake Strike and hit it right into her stomach.

Several drops of blood dropped onto the ground. A few dark red streaks already began to run down Marie’s cleaver. Much to her approval, the cleaver had successfully dug into the flesh of the man she had decided to kill. Though it didn’t go as deep as she had expected from the strength of her swing, the iron blade had was well lodged into the back of her prey. The musty, sweet smell of fresh blood began to waft in the air, quite to her sensual pleasure. Yet…

Why was he still standing? The iron blade had most definitely hit flesh and nerves. From her long experiments, she had found discovered that such a wound should invoke a weakened reaction from the target, typically a loss of strength in the muscles or a euphonic cry. Yet… yet, this man did no such thing. Putting aside still standing, he was barely reacting at all. He seemed to leisurely register the attack before nonchalantly turning around to look at her. He didn’t even so much as squeal or sigh. In her surprise, Marie ended up laxing her grip on the cleaver and lost possession of it when the man turned around, the cleaver still lodged into the back.

After turning, the man glared at her, and Marie took an unconscious step back. However, it was not because she was intimidated by his glare, but rather that she didn’t feel comfortable so close to him. The mystery of his reactions toiled in her head. Everything he was doing went against her years of research. Not even the tough mountain boar she faced once shrugged off her killing blows. This guy… he’s a definite outlier. He isn’t like anything she had killed before. He’s… not human.

“Just what are you?”

Those words ended up slipping out of her lips, showing a distinct shred of disbelief, rare for her. Under normal conditions, such a discovery would’ve been rather interesting for her. Yet, in that dark alleyway facing a target that she had been intent on killing, her interest morphed into simple confusion. With her mind in shambles, she barely registered that he had taken a grip of his staff. Before she could properly come back to her senses, he had already begun spinning his staff. In one fell swoop, the iron weapon slammed hard into her abdomen.

The force of the blow caused her to double over immediately. The wind was blown straight out of her lungs. Air and spit was forcefully repelled from her mouth, jettisoning into the atmosphere and a little onto the man’s staff. The blow was enough to knock her a little bit back; she stumbled slightly, having been knocked off balance, before her feet became unable to keep up and she fell hard on her butt. After that one attack, she ended up as such, sprawled on the floor, paralyzed and breathless. It was a shameful display that made her look quite pathetic.

Yet, none of these things mattered to her. Instead of looking up at the face of her assailant, she was entirely focused on her stomach, the place where she got hit. A burning, somewhat stinging feeling was coming from it. It was sending sharp, pounding waves to her brain, blaring warning signals she had never experienced before. This feeling… itchiness?

Without warning, her hands grabbed at her the hem of her sweater. In one hasty movement, she pulled it up fiercely, revealing her torso to the cold night air. There, on the area where the staff had made contact with her, was an increasingly red spot of skin. It looked like a rash, except without the bumpiness. There was no word in her vocabulary that could describe it. This area itched. That had to be it. Reflexively, she immediately tried to scratch it, approaching it with her left hand while her right kept her upper clothing held up. But the second her nails dug into the bright red spot, those sharp, pounding waves doubled in strength. Her body instinctively tensed up and she ended up gently putting her palm over the area. She knew now. She couldn’t scratch it. That only made it worse. But what was she supposed to do? How could she get rid of this feeling?

It itched.

It itched. It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It itched It Itched!

Her eyes widened. She was bent over, clutching her stomach. Her sweater was messily propped up by her arms, and her skirt was left covered in dirt and covering little. Cold sweat dripped down the back of her neck. Her breathing was ragged while her body shook uncontrollably. In her disheveled and pitiful appearance, she slowly looked up at the man.

She muttered in a cold, quiet mumble.

“What…”

Her voice staggered. Emotions besides the itchiness burst through her heart. She grit her teeth hard. She couldn’t help but dig her nails into her flesh, ignoring the sharp waves that had previously broken her mentality. That wasn’t the matter anymore. Only her savage emotions remained. A wild, beastly howl erupted.

“WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!!!!!”

Calm heard her say “just what are you?” and calm just scratched the back of his head wondering about that considering he wasn't really anything special yet and before he could think it over a lot he saw her go back a few steps from the hit with wind blowing out of her lungs. He then saw her fall on her ass as she was paralyzed and breathless thinking about how she looked pretty pathetic for someone who just tried to kill her.

"Honestly how could i let someone as pathetic as you try to kill me well then i guess i should just take the chance to do the same."

He watched her open up her shirt and try to scratch where he hit her there being a red mark before she jumped up slightly like she felt the same pain again. Calm then watched her clench her stomach as he yawned pulling out the cleaver as he walked over to her hearing her asking what he did to her.

"I hit you in the stomach and now i'm just about to get payback "

Calm held the cleaver as he chopped it down right into her stomach where the red mark was moving it back and forth gaining a dark chuckle as he heard her yelling through her wild emotions of hate calm not really being bothered by them until he heard a couple of marines rush into the alleyway with guns, swords, and old looking oil lamps as calm looked at all of them.

"Well i wasn't really planning on dragging any attention to me but it looks like i might have to defeat a few marines."

He dodged a slash from one of them before kicking him in the side of the stomach making him fall over to the side doing this to a few more marines before the marines with muskets fired at him one of them hitting him in the shoulder before stepping on one's face and jumping off from it to escape.

He rushed into a window finding a few medical supplies in what looked like a clinic taking bandages, tweezers, and pain pills before rushing out another window running into a few dark alleyways the marines losing sight of him.

Calm stopped at one of the walls taking off the top of his yukata as he wrapped bandages around the place where he got hit by the cleaver and using the tweezers to take out the bullet in his shoulder feeling slight pain then wrapping his shoulder up in bandages taking a pain pill just incase it hurt too much to move without them.

Marie was shaking. Her expression was fierce, speaking volumes of her aggression towards the man. In sharp contrast, though, the man was unfazed by her ferocious roar. He nonchalantly pulled the cleaver out of his back and began to move towards her. He was even yawning. And that made it even more intimidating. As he got closer, Marie’s breath hastened. For each step he took, her body felt like backing away ten. He said he was going to get payback. And though she wasn’t sure exactly what he meant by that, her body tensed at the thought. She recalled the all-too recent waves of sensation that wrecked her brain. She could still feel that piercing itchiness and her mind screamed at the thought of it doubling. She knew not what he would do but she did know what he had already done. But that was nothing compared to the wild instincts raging in her heart.

Yes… Payback was it? She would do that. She just had to kill him. Kill like always. Not for enjoyment though, but to satisfy these emotions bursting through her chest. Only after she had slashed him, chopped him, ripped his organs from his corpse would they go away. She would show him the ferocity of a cornered animal!

Having made her resolution, she took her hands off her wound, to grab the katana she had hidden on the back of her body, lined across the back of her spine and held in place by her sweater, with the butt of the sheather wedged a little into the hem of skirt. As she went to grab her weapon, she’d glare at her opponent and put strength into her legs to get up-

-only to abruptly freeze in place. She couldn’t put any strength into her legs; they were completely frozen stiff. Even her arm failed to pull out her sword. Only upon touching the grip, did she realize how sweaty her hand was. Through holding it, she felt the rough vibrations of her own shaking. Then, did she realize the state of her body. The words she had thought of earlier resounded in her mind.

“Oh… I really am a cornered animal.”

And her body lost all strength. The wild ferocity that had urged her, drained straight out of her body. Instead, she simply looked up at the man right before her, holding the cleaver, with a hopeless expression.

“No…”

The cleaver swung down and dug right into her stomach, specifically the area of her wound. Marie’s entire body rocked upon contact.

“GAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!”

A blood curdling scream came from her throat. Sharp waves of sensation, far more intense than the previous attack, reverberated her entire body. It was a hot, searing feeling, as if someone had stuck a hot iron into her stomach. The previous hit couldn’t even compare. Mere itchiness couldn’t describe the intensity of the feeling.

“Aaaaaaah! Aaaaaaaagghhhhh, AAAAaaaaAGhhhh, AAAAAUAUAGHHH!!”

She continued to scream, unable to control herself. Her body couldn’t even muster the concentration to stop him. Her mind felt like it was going to break from all the senses rushing to her head.

And just as she thought the feeling would die down, he began to move the cleaver back and forth while it was still in her. The feeling once again doubled. With every slight movement in the cleaver, it renewed with a fresh strike against her brain. Her screams became even louder. Her limbs thrashed wildly and uncontrollably. She closed her eyes, but it wouldn’t go away. It just wouldn’t end, like an endless cycle of renewed for eternity.

“Aaa, no no no no no stop no stop stop stop it itches no it itches it itches it itches it itches ah no no no stop no NO!”

But instead he only chuckled. She could only endure as he had his way with her. Eventually, she couldn’t even scream any more. She was entirely breathless. Instead, she just looked up at him. Her face had morphed into something else from all the creaming. The slightest hint of tears welled up in the corner of her eyes.

“Stop… please…”

Abruptly, light flooded her vision. The pressure on the cleaver disappeared and she was finally released from that hell. Voices ran across the street. Gunfire and shouting echoed in her ears. But she couldn’t care less; her mind was in no state to comprehend such things. All that mattered was that it was over.

“Dammit, he got away!”

“He’s in that building. Get him.”

“Are you okay, miss? Say something.”

“She’s bleeding profusely. Call for a medic!”

It took a while before she realized that she was surrounded by marines. They must’ve heard her screaming and come to see what was up. Certainly, the man had dissapeared; she didn’t even have to look. But she didn’t want to think about him. She didn’t want to think about what would happen next or what was happening then. All she needed to do was close her eyes.

And everything faded to black.

Calm continued the rest of his way walking as he knew the marines wouldn't have had enough time to alarm each other of his presence so he just kept navigating the alleyways before coming out to see the sun slightly peeking out as he started walking out to his boat only to see 10 marines stationed outside his boat as he chuckled.

He walked up to the marines looking at them as they pulled out their swords aiming them at him. Calm was thinking of how to defeat them without dragging too much attention but didn't see anyway to do that considering it was almost daylight.

"So much for a quiet escape i guess. chichichi"

He held up his staff as he said Spark Strike dragging the bottom of his staff against the ground as it heated up slightly and hit one marine in the chest with the strike traveling to his chin as he got knocked out. Then 2 marines aimed at him going for his neck as he grabbed the blunt side of their sword making them stab each other while chuckling and fought off the rest of the marines sweating.

"That was a good workout for today"

He left the marines behind walking to his ship as he jumped in rowing off the island as he thought about how he really needed to get a better ship if he was ever gonna travel into the grand line plus it would atleast make him not tired when he gets on an island. He heard a few cannonballs fire as he sighed and rowed faster barely dodging them as he rowed at max speed trying to escape the marines. After 20 minutes he finally escaped out to sea as the marines stopped chasing him.

"chichichi man those marines followed me way too long well i wonder where im gonna end up next."

He fell asleep inside his boat waiting for his next adventure not really caring what direction he went into as long as he found land before he died.

Much later, Marie would wake up in the island’s puny marine outpost. They told her that she’d been out for a while. When she tried to move, she found she was unable to; the feeling that she so despised returned, though a lot more dull than before. She found that she that her abdomen had been bandaged up extensively. The marines informed her that her wound was very serious and she’d need to rest a bit longer before she should be moving about. So, she did so obediently, out of fear of experiencing that sharp feeling again.

A bit later, a marine visited the infirmary where they were keeping her. He had an air that said he was (just slightly) more important than the others.

“Hello, there, Miss Lovejoy. Sorry to bother you while you are healing up.” The man greeted her gently as he pulled a chair over to the side of the bed. Out of his suit pocket, he produced a notepad and pen. “I understand you were assaulted last night. I was hoping I could ask a few questions regarding the incident.”

Marie slowly nodded at the suggestion. Though when she pictured the very man in her head, her fists reflexively clenched.

“Good. Well then, first of all, could I ask what you were doing there so late at night?”

“I was… going out to have fun in town.”

Well, that wasn’t untrue.

“I see. But please be more careful next time. You never know what dangers are lurking at night.” He scrawled something in his notepad before he continuing. “Regarding your assaultant, do you have any information on him? I regret to inform you that we… let the man escape. Any information you have would be great. Maybe he may have muttered his name?”

Having been asked as such, she began to rack her brain for information on him. But to no avail. He had never mentioned his name or anything crucial about himself. She tried to dive deeper into her memories. She recalled with astonishing freshness him walking up to her, him withstanding her cleaver chop, him smashing the staff into her stomach, him taking the cleaver and-

Marie’s body began to shiver. Her eyes were a horrific width as she breathed erratically once more. Those horrid memories came back; the terror she met in that alleyway was still fresh. It made her stomach churn.

Seeing her sudden symptoms, the marine officer realized what she was going through and frantically stood up.

“I’m sorry. I should’ve known asking you this early would bring back bad memories.” He spouted comforting words to try to ease her pain. “It’s ok. That man is gone now. We’ll make sure you never have to see him again.”

Eventually, Marie calmed down. The words had an effect on her. After a bit, she smiled a little, not out of joy but relief.

“Yes… I never want to see him again.”

A few notes:

Post #6: "Calm held up his staff spinning it at high speeds as he whispered Snake Strike and hit it right into her stomach."

Unless you were given permission by Zikari, be careful about 'calling your hits'. Basically just do what Zikari did in her prior post (stating intent and motion), as opposed to implying that you hit. Granted, yes, you do have the stat advantage, but I maintain this point.

- INTERESTING PSYCHOLOGY BY THIS DUDE ASKING TO STAY THE NIGHT AT A SUPPOSED MURDERERS.

- Zikari, I really enjoyed the characterisation.

- Calm Ian James picks up a bounty of 1,000,000 beli for assault of 'INNOCENT WITTLE GIRLS' and marines.

- Gains are as follows (yes I'm uh... foregoing the table, a bit lazy today).

---

Marie: 7 SD, 1,750,000 beli.

Calm: 6 SD, 1,500,000 beli. Gained bounty (see in above notes).
Okay, fine, I actually have characters.
