Mariejois, the Holy Land

Description

The Shining Capital, the Celestial Throne, Land of the Gods... or the Marble Monstrosity, the Collar of the World. Mariejois is many things to many people. Seat of power to the World Government, Gorosei, and of course the Celestial Dragons, 'grand' hardly does the place justice. Built atop the Red Line and surrounded by pure white clouds, most Marines will at the very least pass by Mariejois as they sail along the Righteous Path on their way to the New World. For those that stop and venture within the city, they may find themselves feeling a strange sense of dissociation between their surroundings and the emotional atmosphere. Although the towering mansions, brilliant marble, intricate carvings and gold trims promise a heavenly garden of angels, there is often a pervasive air of tension smothering the streets. Being surrounded by the most powerful people in the world, the Dragons most notably, means even relatively small errors can result in all manner of horror ranging from enslavement to execution. Cultural standards in Mariejois are perhaps the most stringent in the entire ocean; only those districts sat in the outskirts - areas that the Nobles and Government officials rarely bother to tread through - permit any sort of true relaxation in this most glorious of metropolises.

Climate

Located atop part of the Red Line, Mariejois boasts the highest altitude of any city, barring perhaps some Sky Islands. Due to this prestigious claim, the city's weather tends to consist of year-round sun, filtered into sparkling god-rays by the surrounding clouds. Because of these clouds, Mariejois tends to look as if it is draped in a thin veil of fog at all times, an effect that most agree only adds to its majesty and mystique.

The actual temperature, however, tends to be fairly chilly and damp, an inevitable side-effect of living so high up. On warmer days, the humidity can ramp up into the uncomfortable to unbearable, though most buildings are equipped to deal with the weather and are as cool and conditioned as their appearances suggest.

Locations

The Righteous Path, and the Grand Anchors
The route by which one actually enters Mariejois, the Righteous Path is a winding series of heavily fortified canal lifts that gradually elevate ships up the slopes of the Red Line. Once atop the continent, sailors are in the Righteous Path proper; a wide river that seems to shimmer with ethereal faerie-fire. From there captains may cross the width of the Red Line and be carried down into the New World much like how they ascended, or dock in Mariejois' port, the Grand Anchors.

First impressions are important and the Anchors spares no expense in making an amazing one. Beyond the crates and barrels used to ferry supplies, not an inch of wood has been used in constructing the Anchors. The piers and jetties are all carved from marble, decorative granite, and rich quartz. Most awe-inspiring and the first things to become visible to those coming along the Righteous Path are the 'Atlas Men,' as they're known to most locals; instead of regular, ugly, bare mechanical cranes, the Anchors employ goliath statues of great men with outstretched hands standing among the piers to move cargo and lift ships into dry docks. The Atlas even make use of transparent rope fibers to make it appear as if loads are being moved by their will alone!

Lower Hassock
Otherwise known as 'Footstool' to some of its residents, and regarded as the slums of the city by the Celestials, though even kings agree that particular description is apt only in the Dragon's deluded lexicon. The outer district of Mariejois, Lower Hassock still manages to make the noble districts of other capitals glow red with envy. Like everything, the buildings are made of pure white stone though many interiors revert to less pricey and more flexible materials. Since few officials enter the area, Hassock has a far lighter atmosphere and the residents play, work, barter, drink and smile largely without fear. The complete lack of crime as well as the abundant wealth means health and happiness are at a constant high, and although many of Hassock's people are perfectly pleasant, the snobbishness of aristocracy does infect the culture slightly more than other places on the Grandline.

Hassock's greatest landmark would be Wyvern Hold: barracks, training ground and main base of operation for most Marines and local Honor Guard. Higher-ranked offices, particularly those with greater political ties and responsibilities than strictly Navy ones, may take residence at the Palace, but it is Wyvern Hold that represents Mariejois' military might. Within the courtyard is a bronze statue of four Marines raising the World Government flag in spite of demonic oni and monsters, wearing symbols eerily similar to common pirate themes, surrounding them.

Yggdrasil
The 'middle' district, those areas surrounding the palaces and mansions of the Celestial Dragons and World Government. It is here that the mask of Mariejois truly comes full stage. Many of the families here are of high-level Government bureaucrats, Marine officers, or minor noble houses - or those aspiring to join them. It is also among the branches of Yggdrasil that etiquette, manners, honor, and prestige begin to rule all interaction. The residents wish to consider themselves the apex of humanity and the area is a constant battleground of petty one-upmanship and peacock tactics. Builders and craftsman adore Yggdrasil as business is never-ending, and members of the trade are very common at work among the townhouses and manors; homes are always being remodeled, new gadgets and furniture are always being commissioned, anything to get an imagined edge in esteem over their neighbors.

At Yggdrasil's heart lies the All Blue Bazaar, named for the legendary ocean which supposedly contains the fish of every sea. Given their customer base and the sheer amount of beli to be made, the master-merchants and trade-princes of the Bazaar come from far and wide to hawk virtually every ware and good available. From the most mundane to the most exotic it can be found somewhere in the Bazaar, if not immediately then a mother could bet the life of her child that any number of the trade-princes could have it made available and shipped in, for the right price. But such a transcendent site for traders comes with a degree of danger, for one must stay on their guard at all times while in the Bazaar, not due to pickpockets, but because the World Nobles regularly patrol the stalls for anything that might pique their divine interest and they do not tolerate disturbances to their shopping sprees.

Palace of the Five Elder Stars
The structural embodiment of the World Government in its entirety. The Elder Star Palace is a massive, multi-storied basilica that dominates the skyline of Mariejois. It is here that the Gorosei reside and the highest level of administrative function is performed. The Palace also houses the Commander-in-Chief of the Marines, and meeting chambers for the Reverie and Shichibukai when they converge to discuss whatever matters currently threaten order and the Government's grip. Atop the Palace's roof is a large outdoor space and garden with a lake-sized pond used as a more relaxing meeting space.

The Palace can easily make the claim of being the most heavily-defended structure on the face of the planet, with few others being able to seriously contest it. Vice Admirals are almost as common as ensigns along its many, labyrinth corridors, while the Admirals and Fleet Admirals themselves are fairly regular visitors.

Immediately surrounding the Palace are the residencies of the World Nobles, an area no one dare walk unless absolutely necessary.
