The air was very cold, as Lycus stood there staring down those people before him. That pirate… the woman held hostage… the marine up high holding a gun, aimed and ready… As he stood there he noticed time stood still, and as he began to walk his consciousness left his own body. At first he was stunned, and tried to see his body beneath him but it simply wasn’t there. When his gaze returned to that in front of him, the people had changed. The woman and the marine both shared his face. He had been in both of the positions before… at the mercy, and defending what’s right. But why hadn’t the pirate’s face changed. At that moment the pirate was shot in the chest, and Lycus awoke in a cold sweat. He was still swaying in the hammock he laid in the night before, and all remained calm. The room was just as it was left, a game of cards left unfinished, a log book still in the earliest of pages written in only hours ago, mugs that used to be full of beer on only one side of the table, a burnt out candle… And yet, it still seemed pretty dark outside. The portcullis permitted very little light to actually enter. The sway of the hammock was inviting, but he felt it more important to investigate. Climbing the stairs back to the main deck of the Canine, the sharp wind took him by surprise, almost as much as the scenery. The dark rolling clouds of smog spreading from the mouth of a volcano in the distance as the rising sun came into view, it was purely picturesque. He couldn’t help but smile a little bit as he walked ahead, before remembering that he had all his navigational data set up at the helm. Making sure to close the door behind him, he strode off, in search of his map. An odd sound caught him off guard, and slowed him down as he walked up the stairs. Was it… some instrument? Possibly, he hadn’t heard many instruments, but this is possibly one. It seemed very off, though, something he couldn’t shake. Finally at the wheel he snatched up the old parchment chart, and traced his finger carefully along his travels. Several marks and notes dotted the document after being handed down from one other person after their journey. Finding his own path he started about a month ago, he found the place. Karaoke… Island?... Perpetual music of the- no, that can’t right. Volcanoes can’t make music, can they? Maybe that was just a figurative interpretation. “Well, it’s something… Let’s get there sooner rather than later.” Opening up a hatch, he descended a ladder down into the engine room. It was currently slow burning, a little bit of a push would get it going at the right pace. Opening the door to the furnace, he almost caught a few embers on his shirt before loaded about four logs of wood from supply into and closing it shut, and adjusting the pressure. “There… that should give us some solid headway.” Climbing back up the ladder he was almost carefree, until a limb broke from underneath his foot and he came sliding down like an idiot. “Great…” Now he had to improvise a fix quickly before they got driven into the island and thoroughly grounded. At least he had some light to work with... Edited by Linxwire, Aug 23 2016, 06:39 PM.

Travel by sea was still bullshit, complete and utter bullshit. That is to say that you’d be hard pressed to convince one Nikki Brooky otherwise as the very slightest rocking up on deck was enough to plunge her into bouts of nausea and eventual insomnia. However, as someone who was prone to not let on to anything that could make her appear weak as well as having an abnormal drive for self-improvement, the slugger had taken to using her sleepless nights for a touch of batting practice under the starry skies. Snatching a baseball from the rusty bucket at her side, Nikki took a deep breath and a moment to scan the horizon, taking account for the wind and the rocking of the boat before tossing the ball into the air and absolutely crushing it with a wild swing of her bat, causing the orb to fly into the air with a wicked crack. “Huh, not fa’ nothin’, but maybe dis rock da boat bullshit is workin’ ta my advantage.” She commented, dropping her bat and packing her dip can, smiling in self-satisfaction at the far-off splashing sound that followed after as she tucked a pinch of tobacco into her lip. “Jus’ one more, an’ I tink, I’ll have dis down.” Nikki commented, stooping down to snatch another ball, only to find her bucket empty. Right, that was the problem with batting out at sea, not like there was a ball return, or any way to retrieve them at all. Even though it was a set back she was anticipating, that didn’t stop her from cursing under her breath as she stooped down and collected the belonging she had piled next to her, including the uniform she had removed in favor of practicing in shorts and a sports bra. About the time she was pouring a foul mixture of work-out supplements into a well-deserved pitcher of beer, Nikki finally noticed how quickly The Canine was headed towards a very nearby island. Initially shrugging and knocking back half of the mixture of pisswater beer and protein powder under the assumption it was part of Lycus’s plans, their rapid approach began to sink in as odd after a few moments. “Ey buddy, where da’ fuck is yoose? I don’t know jack shit ‘bout sailin’, but dis don’t seem right ta’ me.” She called out loud enough to carry through the entire ship before chugging the rest of her drink. Dire as the situation may be, she wasn’t about to spill beer. That’s alcohol abuse, and alcohol abuse was a crime. |

“Well this is just great!” He groaned to himself. Forget the ladder for now, maybe there was a way to make the engine slow down just a little to buy him some time to get back up to the helm. “Think man, think.” He rubbed his chin while considering his options. The pressure can’t be adjusted in either direction. The valve being too tight would cause it to rupture and too loose would only make it worse. “I could put the fire out, but I have nothing to do that…” He said looking around and noticing that there wasn’t any ready supply of water down here, “That’s… a major oversight. I need to change that… later.” A voice piped up of the sound of their impending crash, and Lycus immediately felt mixed emotions. He was glad that she was awake and that she noticed, but from the tone of her voice alone she didn’t make much of the situation yet. “Hey! Don’t get too comfy up there, we might be in a little trouble here!” Hopefully she could hear him over the roaring engine. Suddenly an idea came to him that had it occurred earlier would have been much more convenient. He rushed back over to the ladder, and forced the supply of wood over to it. It made a semi-decent not so sturdy platform for him to stand upon. Jumping from it, he grabbed onto the ladder near the top of the climb, and heard it groan from the sudden force. He rushed up it, not wanting to be stranded there another second before catching his breath and feeling like an idiot back above the hatch. “I need to replace that atrocity.” he said slamming the hatch closed, and sprinting to the helm and gripping in both hands before he came to see the island in full detail, because they were basically upon it already. There wasn’t much he could to stop it, but he pulled a brake lever to stop accelerating. “GRAB ONTO SOMETHING!!” He did what he thought was necessary, and spun the wheel a bit but it wasn’t quite enough to save the situation. The impact threw him off of the helm in an instant, and flying, hurtling through the sand. He was stopped by a tree, shattering a few limbs from nearby foliage. Everything was sore, but he willed himself to move, and get to his feet. Clearing up his vision from the sand in his eyes, he came to see the Canine in her current state. Leaning on her starboard side, it was needless to say, kind of a mess. Lycus placed a hand on her a little disappointed in himself for obvious reasons. “Well… this sucks.” He looked very defeated for a moment and then resigned to what fate had in store for him. “Maybe we can get some help moving her back out into the water…” He said as he turned to look inland. Hopefully there were people with enough tolerance for the job. |

Wincing as the rather atrocious mix she just downed churned in her stomach, Nikki began to have second thoughts about drinking half a gallon of carbonated alcohol in such a short period of time, especially when she didn’t exactly have her sea legs just yet. That said, “I was wrong” was a phrase that wasn’t really in the slugger’s vocabulary in lieu of quips such as “Duz’ I look like a pussy to ya, asshole?” However, it didn’t seem like she would have to say any of those things given the rather frantic tone of Lycus regarding the impending crash. “I’ll take dat as a, “No, Nikki, things aren’t going well at all, and that’s coming from me, Lycus, who happens to know jack shit about sailing,” Right?” She replied to her partner, doing an exaggerated impression of the man that painted him as a stick in the mud. At this point, an impact was less of a possibility and more of an inevitability, and that alone was enough for the woman to not even bother freaking out. It wasn’t her ship and there was nothing she could do to prevent what was about to happen, so it seemed rather natural to just latch onto something and treat the whole ordeal like a ride. “Yeah, yeah, I’m way ahead of you, goy.” Nikki said, already having grabbed hold of the side of the main cabin, the wood beginning to splinter under her unnatural tight grip. “It’s a goin’, goin’, goin’…” She began to repeat, imitating the voice of an announcer at a sports game as The Canine began to skip on the banks of sand below them, having fun with the bleak situation. That is, until she jerked forward with the ships sudden stop on the actual beach, inertia enough to send her flying over the rails and onto the sand. Laying on the damp earth silently for a few seconds as the waves lapped at her heels, the slugger finally burst into laughter. “Gone, it's a home fuckin' run!” she called out, sitting up and slapping her knees in amusement, shooting Lycus a sideways glance and a shrug upon finding him in a similar position not far from him. “Seems like a lot of trouble fa’ the ship ‘dat done got us inta’ this mess, why not jus’ use da cash we got from Redsand ta’ get one dat, I dun know, don’t fuck up all da time?” |

Dusting himself off, Lycus found sand to be all the more uncomfortable the second time around, but at least this time it wasn’t scorching hot. Lycus felt a little bit hurt by the suggestion of just leaving the ship out in the middle of nowhere, but they did have their share of problems stemming from it. Not all of them we’re fault of the vessel itself, ergo the crash and situations alike, but it could have been better. “Look, there have been some rather annoying times with the ship, I totally get that, but in truth most of the problems we have are coming from… well, me. But even if getting some new ship solved half of our problems, it likely isn’t the best option. Upkeep on these things, well it’s not fun, that’s for certain. It takes more than I expected to keep this timber afloat.” He finally turned to Nikki, no longer eyeing up what damage was done to the ship from the crash alone. “But I have sort of, a personal investment in this one. I’m no shipwright, that’s for certain, but some time ago I was training with one. The Canine was the first ship I ever truly worked on, and I’ll be damned if I let her go that easily. I want to let go of her in a stupid romantic way, when she’s on her last legs.” He smiled a bit, because he knew that he was a bit childish for such ideas. “Also, the important thing is it’s very costly and time consuming.” He began walking off, into the line of trees inland, talking to Nikki without facing her. “We’d be here for a few weeks waiting for someone to make a new one if it came around to it, besides, you want to say goodbye to money so quickly? Come on, let’s go meet the locals.” He frowned after saying that, it sounded much cooler in his head. The island wasn’t big enough to warrant a long trek through trees, infact they only walked for about two minutes before finding civilization, a city that encircled a comparatively small volcano that never quite stopped spewing ash. The streets of which seemed to have nobody on them at all at the moment, and the sun still wasn’t overhead. Just what time was it? “Where is everyone? This can’t be normal considering well, the number of houses. Are they all gathered somewhere for something or other?” Lycus looked around, well as much as turning your head from one side to another, not a very effective search method. Then he noticed as if hearing it for the first time the ‘music’ of the volcano. It was a beautiful sound, but it still couldn’t be described by him in the slightest. It lacked melody, or any real sort of rhythm, it just was. Oddly enough, it was soothing, but he could only imagine that people who lived here have heard it going on for so long they are more than bored of it, likely ignoring it. “Whatever… I guess we won’t find anything standing around here.” |

“Fuckin’ lord, I get it, yoose likes da ship, da ship is good, ya don’t want a new one, let’s just move on with gettin’ it the fuck off the beach…” Nikki groaned, shaking her head and not bothering to go into the details out of fear that Lycus would get even more into his sentimental dribble. He was a good enough guy, but, well, that was the problem really. Despite her best efforts in corrupting him, she still hadn’t quite managed to break his shell and get him to finally let loose. At this point, she hadn’t even considered letting him go and moving on to someone else since she had already spent so much time on the process. It was like when you’ve lost so much money playing blackjack, the only thing that makes sense is to keep playing. Hefting her bat over her shoulder, the slugger followed behind the man lazily, knocking against the tree trunks as she went absentmindedly. The jungle was rather dense to the point that Nikki was beginning to doubt that anyone lived on the island at all, though just as she was about to comment on that, they broke out of the brush and into… A vacant city. “Yoose gots ta be kiddin me, it’s empty, completely fuckin empty. Heh, we’re fucked.” She shrugged, pulling out her can of dip and putting a pinch in. Nerves a bit calmed from the fresh supply of nicotine, Nikki glanced over at Lycus and gave a half smile. “If ‘days anyone hea’ I know how da fuck we can gett’em out, watch dis.” She said crookedly, approaching an can of paint that rested on the road and picking it up with one hand before facing a plain white wall, tossing it in the air, and crudely smashing it with her bat, resulting in a wicked noise and a crimson splatter. “HOW BOUTS YOOSE FUCKIN WAKE UP, YA COCKSUCKERS?!?” She shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth. “See, if anyone is hea’, dat should make’em show dere faces, eh?” |

Lycus rubbed his arm, as it was still a little sore from the rough landing they had endured. He heard something get lifted off of the ground and thought nothing of it until the familiar crack of Nikki’s baseball bat hitting metal. He spun around to see the paint splattered all over the wall, and was somewhat speechless. He had come to expect this now, but he sort of doubted that would wake anyone inside the building. Oh how wrong he was. There was a large clattering sound from inside of the building, like someone toppled over a neat stack of pots and pans and they fell straight to the ground. This was shortling followed by the sound of somebody fumbling with the doorknob from the inside. “Wow, who would’ve guess the only person out here just so happened to be inside-” Lycus was cut of by the sound of shouting from behind the door. “YOU DAMN KIDS THROWING TIN CANS AT MY WALLS. THIS IS THE LAST TIME CARL I’ll ‘AVE YOU NOW” Lycus stood there dumbfounded, as the door finally came open. They mistook them for a bunch of obnoxious children? A very old man stepped out in a green robe with, a cane that came to a T shape at the grip. He hobbled straight over to Lycus, shouting things that made no sense. “...lousy kids these days with their, rock n’ roll music and disgusting taste…” When he finally got up the dark skinned man, he paused. “Carl… you’ve really grown in the past few weeks, and got a pretty dark tan.” Lycus found it kind of hard not to smile, listening to the senile old man. “Listen, sir. Do you happen to know where everyone…” he trailed off, as the old timer started advancing towards Nikki. “And you… you, you did this?” His tone quickly changing from infuriated to amazed as the paint dribbling down the wall streaked to the ground. The splatter mark must’ve been something amazing, because it caught his attention for some time. “...My goodness.” He turned back around with mouth agape. “You must be one of those new, exoctic artists, Miss. My apologies for yelling at you.” The old whacked Lycus with the cane for his insolence. “CARL! Why didn't you tell me she was an artist!?” Whatever charm Lycus found in the old man quickly vanished after that, and frowned while saying “My name isn’t Carl.”. Promptly, the old man ignored Lycus in favor of the pink haired young lady. “I’m sure you’re here to show off your latest work at today’s showing. Come on now, I’ll lead you.” Even given the time to protest, the man didn’t seem to hear any of it. “Well, perhaps other more useful people will be there.” Being lead through the city, they would find themselves in a domed building made entirely of glass, where damn near all pathways were blocked by groups and clusters of people observing artwork on display, and common street performers on their own personal pedestals. Upon arriving, the old man found somebody else he likely mistook for Carl and began berating them instead. |

“Call and ye’ fuckin’ shall receive, eh?” Nikki shot a snide grin over her shoulder at Lycus as the first signs of life began to stir on the city streets of the quaint island. She was clearly satisfied with the effectiveness of her rude behavior, spitting and even appearing rather amused when the first respondent turned out to be an old man. “Ay goy, weese ain’t no kids, he ain’t called Caa’l, and weese don’ts listen ta that fuckin’ bullshit. Weese about outlaw country, cold beer, long cut dip, and hittin’ shit.” The slugger hand waved the crotchety old man’s assertions, counting off her likes on one hand as she spoke for both her and Lycus regardless of whether he actually shared her tastes in music and vices. She was not only certain that the old man wouldn’t appreciate her antics, but had resolved to get on his nerves as much as she could without being branded a criminal, if only for the fun of it. As a result, Nikki was more than a little surprised when he reacted in awe and even a hint of admiration, as strange as that was. Squinting at the old timer in confusion, she cut back and forth between the man and the rather large and formless splatter of paint she had left behind during her wake up call. Did this guy seriously think that kind of bullshit was art? Whatever. Regardless of his sanity, the slugger had no reason to not go along with his deluded notions. “Yeah, ‘dats right, I’m the aa’tist. My aa’t is hittin’ shit. I’m pretty fuckin’ good at it too, ain’t dat right, Caa’l?” Nikki snorted, following behind the old coot as he kept ranting and raving. It wasn’t exactly a lie, she did find a certain beauty in hitting shit and even if modern art wasn’t her thing, she knew enough about it to know that to some idiots would pay a pretty penny for it. While it wasn’t long before the old man abandoned them, he did manage to lead them somewhere a bit more useful for their needs. “Well, looks like ‘dis place is jus’ full of aa’tists, eh Caa’l?” She shrugged at Lycus, deciding to adopt that nickname for the time being as she snatched a can of paint from a rather frail looking man, a quick snarl cutting any protests to a quick halt. Tossing and catching the can in one hand, Nikki shot a wicked grin at her partner before repeating her previous stunt with a metallic crunch and a veritable cloud of paint. As the local’s gasped at her primal style of ‘painting,’ the slugger gave a very unladylike snort. “When in Romulin, eh?” |
