The Character
Personality: Curious about the world and often insightful when giving wisdom, Amaranthine is a natural born explorer and adventurer, it's why he joined the Marines. Though he's slow to anger it's best to stay away from him when Amaranthine is on a tear. Avy is open to new ideas and directions, but once he sets his mind to something he has every intention of following that course through to it's completion. He is quick to follow orders and administer justice to it's fullest extent, but is too thoughtful of his subordinates when giving orders, a noted black mark in his dossier.

Hometown: White Sands, Red Line

History: The earliest memories of Amaranthine are sitting in the bow of his families sailing boat navigating the small archipelago near his home town of White Sands, a bustling little town on the shores of North Blue. His father at the rudder and his mother at the sails. The little family had the freedom to go when and where they pleased, spending time as couriers, fishermen, salvagers and merchants to pay the expenses of the sailing yacht they called home. It was a wonderful living and there was much love in the family and much love for the sea and all it provided

Life happens however, and when Amaranthine was just twelve his mother took sick and never recovered, she was buried in the sea she loved so much. A love that was passed to her son spades. Though he'd taken lessons from his mother on the sails the boy was now in charge of them as his father commanded the rudder. For a time life went on, and the boy grew and received more lessons in sailing from his father even building his own small craft and sailing during his down time when the boy was at White Sands.

Tragedy struck again as Amaranthine's father left him in White Sands for a particularly dangerous courier mission, concerned with pirates and mercenaries the young man now of sixteen was left at home. What should have been a trip of a few weeks, turned into a few months. It was hard for the sea-child to cope spending his days sailing his small craft to avoid the pain. He subsisted on a diet of kelp and cod, stopping at islands only to top off his supplies of fresh water.

It was during this time that the young man realized that the sun had bleached his once golden curls had become strait lochs and his eyes once a beautiful blue had grown to reflect the open ocean of green. It was during the realization that Avy realized that the sea would swallow his soul just as it had swallowed his mother's heart and his father's body. It was time for a change, that change came in the form of a Marine Recruiter.

Though not particularly interested in dispensing the Marines brand of justice, Avy carried it out to the best of his abilities and rose through the ranks and did so most violently. As he transferred from post to post a wave of violence followed him, he'd grown up not having to raise a finger to anything bigger than a sea bass. And now he expected to fight, not just sail, and he would do his best to fight to the best of his abilities, And the most worthy opponents were those in the Marines around him. Though Amaranthine did his best to keep the fights playful and competitive there were always those whose personalities didn't mesh, and Avy fought them too.

While his fighting brought him to the attention of the Flag Officers, it was his sailing talent that brought him into the limelight being assigned to Captain Dogachev's flagship the Millennium Horizon, a one-hundred-eighty gun Ship of the Line. Though Avy had a great history with smaller craft and ships he quickly found out all he needed to know about the behemoth ship through a few test cruises.

Rear Captain Dogachev was interested in Petty Officer Vigil because of a bet between the Captain and Commander Rasputin. The wager was simple race. Captain Dogachev's Millennium Horizon versus Commander Rasputin's Charging Tempest an Forty-Four gun Bermuda rigged Frigate. In a conventional race there would be no competition as the Frigate would simply outpace a Ship of the Line. However there were many courses for the race.

The fastest course took them through Salem's Shoals. Few Clippers dared tread the waters full of dagger like rocky outcroppings, slightly submerged barrier islands, and sandbars, Pirates would also be present but few would dare to attack an Fleet Captain's Ship of the Line. At least those who weren't completely crazy. Captain Dogachev's reputation and a sizable betting pool were riding on this one contest. So he would do everything in his power to stack the odds in his favor even leaving the navigation of the Salem's Shoals to his Helmsman Petty Officer Vigil. After walking their course several times PO Vigil, under guidance from the Captain, decided to take the shoals at half sail to remain safe and handily beat Rasputin's crew to the finish line.

The day of the Race and both ships left port at full sail with the Charging Tempest pulling sizable lead as expected. The speed of Rasputin's ship caught Avy off guard and he called to the Navigator to plot the Tempest's estimated time of arrival versus theirs. The result wasn't pretty.

It was then that Petty Officer First Class Amaranthine Vigil made his first command decision. He would clear the dangerous Salem's Shoals at Full Sail. Though he could see the tension in the Navigator's face Avy had the navigator relay her findings to Dogachev before Amaranthine relayed his plan. He could see tension in the Captain's face. The man was unsure, but he had little choice and blessed Petty Officer Vigil's command decision.

The race ended with the Millennium Horizon at anchor at the finish line as the Charging Tempest sailed passed it, the incredulous look on all of her sailor's faces, eyes wide as though their easily won trophy and money was plucked from their hands as candy from a baby.

As the head Honor Guard for Commander Rasputin's boarding of the Millennium Horizon, the Petty Officer got a front row seat to the Dogachev's gloating and Rasputin's confused rage that he'd been bested not simply by a slower ship but by a more skilled Helmsman, a fact that Dogachev wouldn't soon let Rasputin forget.

It was with Dogachev's blessing that Petty Officer First Class Vigil became Master Chief Petty Officer Vigil. Avy also got his choice of assignments with a personally penned letter of recommendation from a Fleet Captain. A letter which white washed all of the citations for unsanctioned fighting he'd received previously, with a promise not to pick any more fights. The two parted ways owing nothing to one another.

No to the use of admirals and Commodores in your history. Stick with Captain and below.
