You know, Serana wasn't expecting anything, you know, spectacular for her first assignment. All graduates of the W.M.D. program were put introduced into the Marines are relatively low ranks, as to not raise suspicion as to why someone ascended into a high profile position from seemingly nowhere. But Lieutenant Commander was still an important rank in it's own right (most Marines never get this high up the ladder in their entire careers), and so you'd think she'd get a somewhat important job to start off her career as an actual Marine. But noooo, instead of being sent to a Grand Line branch where she could immediately start taking down some of the big hot shots in the pirating world, she was being sent to the middle of buttfucking nowhere. Ok, that wasn't fair; the real island in the middle of nowhere was Andthisiswhere Island, for obvious reasons. But Wild Wild West must come a close second; I mean she had never even heard of this place before, and that's coming from someone who had heavily studied the World Government and it's allied nations. But apparently this island was a huge exporter in beef and dairy products (naturally), and so the World Government had taken a huge interest in the industry, which was quite ridiculous if you asked her. I mean there were plenty of other places where you could grow cattle, like places that didn't hand you a gun as soon as you got off the boat because "if everyone's armed, no one is." But guess whichever Marine oversaw this whole partnership wasn't too bright. And that all brings us to the wonderful mission she had been assigned: if she had to write a 3rd grade mystery novel on it, it'd be titled, "Serana Valdís and the Case of the Missing Cattle." Yup, she was investigating a herd of cattle that had gone missing. You've got to be fucking kidding her. Not only that, but it seemed this was classified as an incredibly urgent mission, one that would normally require an entire division of Marines to take care of. But thanks to her excellent reviews from her former "colleagues," her new boss decided that she could probably handle things by herself. In fact, the only reason he saw the need to arrange a partner for her was because, "We need to make sure to use the buddy system at all times!" And so she was supposed to meet up with said Marine at Ant Maam’s Saloon, an establishment run by practically a Marine Worshipe. Serana had just arrived at the place and took a seat at a table, declining the offers of drinks, even though they were "on the house." She didn't believe in drinking on the job, after all. Instead, she'd just wait patiently until her partner arrived; she didn't know anything about them except their rank, but maybe they were a lot more enthusiastic about this mission than she was.... |

Wild Wild West. At least it was a change in scenery. More and more as time went on, it felt like joining the Marines was an elaborate trip. Being shuttled from island to island to do one thing and then pulled off to another place didn't seem like the best use of anyone's time but there wasn't much that Valta could do about it, and not much the short-spoken girl would say either. “Join the Marines! Go to exotic places! Fight Pirates there!” Perhaps that was some kind of ad campaign they ran somewhere? Regardless here she was, on an island where they handed her one of those gun things she had seen around but didn't care about in order to be “safe.” The only reason she didn't just toss it away was because they would just try to give her another one. While the mission she was assigned wasn't really what she would want to do, punch pirates as much as she could, at least it was something that she probably would be good at: Finding missing Cattle. It was bound to be similar than hunting to survive. Livestock weren't the smartest of animals after all, so they would be less skilled in hiding their tracks. That was, if they were just missing. If they had been taken by someone then that would make them harder to track down... but there would be a prize to punch at the end. And thus is was time to go off and meet her partner. Well, partner would be a strong word for it. For the first time she was being put in the care of someone several ranks higher than her. Was it a sign of promotion for her, or her being handed off like a volatile package to someone they didn't care about. It was time to see as she walked into the Saloon. Looking around she spotted the person that was described to her at a table. The short, redheaded girl walked over to the woman over a foot taller than her and stood the for a moment in thought. Afterwards she snapped to attention and saluted Serana. ”Chief Warrant Officer Valta, reporting. Mission, Find Cattle.” It was obvious from her posture that she was forcing this, but still trying. The Formalities of being a Marine wasn't what she was there for. |

Speak of the devil and they arrive. Serana stood up from her seat and gave a quick, "At ease," to the young woman before extending her hand. "Lieutenant Commander Serana Valdís. It's my pleasure." Serana's voice wasn't soft and sweet but rather firm and of slightly louder than medium volume. It conveyed mutual respect and a serious tone, which was fitting despite being at a bar due to to their reason for meeting here. It was actually a bit funny; it was mostly because the owner was a well known Marine supporter and thus Serana felt they could meet and discuss here in peace, but at the end of the day it was just your typical, "you meet up in a bar," scenario, wasn't it? "Please, sit down." Serana gestures towards the chair opposite of the table and proceeded to sit down once again herself. Her trained profiling skills were already hard at work, though it wasn't too obvious as Serana knew better than to stare. The girl was of rather short stature, a whole foot shorter than she was and then some (though she was a rather tall wombs compared to the average height to begin with). Perhaps it was malnourishment while growing up, but it might just be in the genetics. She looked about the same age as her, though perhaps slightly younger. 16 year minimum she'd say, with 19 as a max just because you can never assume. Her hair and eyes burned red, and she meant that both literally and figuratively. As for her uniform, it was all there and in good condition minus some fraying. Obviously she didn't care much about that part, else it would be easy to fix; duely noted. "Let's get down to business, shall we?" Serana began, not wanting to spend the time here for idle chit chatter; there would inevitably be time for that on their long and boring journey to accomplish their goal. "John Tito, the richest cattle rancher on this island, reported to us that nearly 300 of his cattle had gone missing overnight, marking the largest disappearance of cattle since," Serana looked down to her notes laying on her table, "and I quote, 'The Great Cow Escape' six years ago. Now when that happened it was due to some worn out fencing that should have been replaced that ended up collapsing in a storm, giving the cattle a way to escape themselves. But there's no such damage to the fences this time, and thus Tito suspects foul play is involved. Usually the Marine branch here sends out entire platoons for even the small things dealing with the cattle, but this is an unprecedented situation. "And thus they brought us in, two people doing the job of hundreds." Serana capped off the briefing with a sigh. She imagined Valta knew at least the vague details, but hopefully her debriefing wasn't just going over already known information. She really didn't like wasting time. "Now, they didn't tell me much about you save your rank and that you're a skilled tracker; I hope this is true?" |

Valta relaxed as she was put at ease, extending her hand out to shake Serana's. Civilization really was reincorporating her well it seemed. Saluting a higher ranking officers, shaking someone's hand, trying to string more than a few words together at a time. But, no matter how accustom she got to the world outside of the island she survived on alone for all those years, she would never truly leave who she was behind. As prompted, Valta sat down and began to examine the person sitting across from her as she was being examined by them. While the wild girl wasn't trained in profiling or anything fancy like that, she still knew how to size up someone. Serana was tall, but so were most people to Valta. She had a vague memory of the people she grew up around being taller than she ended up, but then again she was a child back then. Everyone seemed taller back then. Past that, Valta could tell that Serana was strong, stronger than she was at least, in a way that made her higher rank make sense, but there was something... else, but she couldn't put her finger on it right now. No matter, if it mattered then she would find out about it sooner or later. Serana then began to speak again, getting down to business which was fine with her. Listening intently, she nodded as the details of the mission were laid out, ending with asking if it were true that she could track. Nodding again, she answered, ”Yes. Track Cattle.” Shifting a bit in her chair so she could motion on the table a bit while talking. She laid one arm on the table and started talking again, ”If escape, easy. Farm animals bad at hiding tracks,” putting the other hand on the table she continued. ”If steal, easy. Humans bad at hiding animal tracks.” Moving her arms back up she made a fist with one of them and punched her palm for emphasis. ”Then we punch. Make them not steal cattle again. That plan?” |

Well there was something that Serana couldn't exactly gather from just analyzing her new partner's appearance; it seemed like her English (or Japanese, she wasn't exactly sure what language they were all speaking in this universe to be quite honest) was very broken, as if she was a foreigner of some kind. No, that wasn't it; she didn't seem to get lost or confused in the briefing, and a foreigner who had a hard time speaking the language would almost certainly have at least a somewhat difficult time listening to it. Instead it seemed like she just wasn't that used to speaking, or rather had never been taught properly in how exactly to converse with someone properly. Just what sort of upbringing did this woman have? "Yes, though the plan is to arrest them too if there are thieves involved, not just hurt them," Serana responded to Valta's last inquiry. She thought for a second about trying to dumb down her language to a more simplistic version, but she opted not to for two reasons. The first is that she didn't want to end up insulting the poor girl, especially if it turned out to just be a speech impediment or a lisp or something that she was trying to avoid. The second is she honestly didn't feel like putting in the effort to choose her words more carefully. "If you trust that you will be able to track them properly, then I'll have faith in your ability to do so." Serana gave a confirmation nod to the woman before getting up from her chair. "Let's head over to the scene of the crime now, shall we?" As they exited the bar, Serana lead them to a oldish looking man in his mid to late 50s who was standing near three horses hitched up by the saloon's porch. He was wearing white washed jeans with some snakeskin Cowboy boots and an untucked button up blue shirt, complete with a brown leather cowboy hat. "Ahh, Commander Valdís; I been waiting for ya," he said in a stereotypical southern accent. Serana turned to Valta, explaining, "This is Marco; he's the local representative from the ranch who will see us to there." She then turned her direction back to the old cowboy. "And I told you, it's Lieutenant Commander; you're giving me too much credit." "Eh, that's too complicated fer my liking; I'll just stick with Commander if ya don't mind." "Very well; let's get going then." Serana unhitched one of the horses and proceeded to get up on top. She had only ridden one maybe once or twice in training, but she felt comfortable enough with this one at the least. "Err, yer a bit smaller than I was expecting, miss," Marco said in response to Valta. "If ya want, you can just catch a ride on the back of mine if that'd make ya feel more comfortable." |

Valta nodded as Serana said they would arrest them. “Yes. Arrest. They resist. Punch.” Despite the brevity of her words, she at least had a way with them. Short and to the point, as if there wasn't any need to waste time or energy on more speaking than what was required. She stood up from her chair as Serana did and followed her out of the Saloon to the man with the horses. After being introduced to Marco, she nodded saying only, ”Valta,” before they got ready to leave. Marco asked if the short girl wanted to ride on his horse due to her height. Without saying anything she walked over to the horse that was left for her and began to stare it in the eyes. The horse reared up and neighed but, being hitched up still, it wasn't really able to get away as she continued to glare at it. After a few moment of freaking out ti finally calmed down and she walked up closer to it, slowly bringing a hand up to it's head and petting it, still glaring at it with her perpetual angry eyes. She stayed like this for a moment before just jumping up on the back of the horse. Valta put her hand back on the horse's head as she sat on it. ”Good horse.” She looked over to Marco. ”Ok. Am fine. Ready.” Reaching with her free arm she unhitched the horse and then grabbed the reigns, ready to ride a horse for the first time ever. Thankfully her stare-down of the horse showed it who was boss so there wouldn't be any trouble. A tamed horse was no match for a girl that had spent so much time dealing with wild animals. It could tell there was a hardened predator in that short body and just doing what she wanted was hopefully the best way to not die. |

Serana was glad they were on the same page at least? The shorter woman's words were short and brief, but the concise and "to the point" nature was rather appealing to her actually. No beating around the bushes or long explanations, just things laid out in black and white. Something told her this would a productive working relationship. Marco frowned a bit, honestly upset a bit as he felt that he must have offended the young lady. He didn't regret asking, but it still made him feel a bit like a jerk. Shaking it off, he turned his head back to the both of them and said, "Alright, just follow me and stick close; don't want y'all wandering off now and getting picked by bandits." He motioned his horse to move forward and Serana followed suit, following in behind him and to the right as so Valta could pull up to the same spot on the left. They walked in silence for a bit, and it was an awkward one at that. Serana considered trying to break it with small talk, but she was sure at this point that that wasn't really Valta's thing. Though it seems Marco hadn't picked up on that (or at least was banking on Serana being able to carry a conversation well), as he began to break the silence. "So uhh, Commander Valdís and.... Valta," he began, realizing Valta never gave him her rank. "Ya'll been in any cases as big as this one before?" Serana wanted to sigh and facepalm a bit, but she was able to compose herself as she remembered that to most of the people here, even a single cattle gone missing was a national crisis. "Quite a few, actually. The most recent one was an expedition into the heart of Loguetown to stomp out an undergroudn sect of criminals that had managed to avoid capture from the strong Marine precesence there. They had killed three Marines and one ranking officer since they first popped up, and had it gone on for any longer there would have been panic in the streets. Myself and my team were able to take care of it quickly, however." Her words sounded genuine and sincere, as if she was reminincing on a memorable mission and overall experience. But not one bit of it was true; it was all rehearsed, time and time again, the details burned into her memory as well as the rest of her "backstory." It wasn't even enough to memorize the details; if she knew everything too perfectly and recited it with ease, it'd almost seem too robotic in a sense. She had to practice being able to make it sounds like a person who had genuinely just gone through it, not someone who read up on it and memorized the report details. It was all just a part of an act, and Serana was simply playing a part. OOC

Valta steered her horse in to formation as the trio started moving off to where they needed to go to start finding these missing cattle. The short-spoken girl was fine with the silence of the travel. It wasn't like she was used to passing the time by talking anyway. Sadly the silence was broken by Marco, who asked them if they had done anything like this before. Serana replied fairly quickly with a rather detailed story about Marine-killing criminals. Valta nodded as she listened to it. It was nice to hear that the person she was working for did indeed seem reliable after all of the flakiness and corruption she had encountered in the Marines. Perhaps if she did well here, Valta would be sent on more important missions? More than just stupid patrols and sweeps that lead to barely any punching. Still, it would probably be good to say something before Marco tried to pull it out of her. The last thing Valta wanted was verbal conflict brought about by her tenancy to stay quiet. She had dealt with more than enough people who thought it was a good idea to try to bring out of her shell when she was quite comfortable there. Taking a breath, she said. ”Wild animals hide. Avoid death. I find.” She punched her palm for emphasis. ”They die. I live. Farm animals dumb. Can't hide. I find.” Hopefully that would be more than sufficient conversation for now, but Valta knew better. Other people liked to talk. It was just something she was going to have to get used to now that she was out in the world, but it was worth it to punch pirates. Regardless, she hoped they would reach where they were going soon so the idle conversation would end. Action was a language she actually cared about. |

So Valta definitely wasn't much for talking; glad Marco's endeavors made that abundantly clear for her instead of just pretty clear. Again, not that the Marine minded, as Serana was someone who didn't really mind silence. Might not be her shtick per say, but she wasn't exactly a chatterbox either. "I see...." Marco awkwardly said, trailing off a bit as he realized he wasn't exactly getting on Valta's good side, what with asking her if she wanted to ride on his horse and then more or less making her talk. Seems like the message was received, and silence fell on the party once more. It wasn't too long till they finally arrived at the scene of the crime, which was pretty impressive Serana guessed for a cattle ranch. It was a huge, open area fenced off by what appeared to be very strong and sturdy metal fencing, and the main archway and gate leading in was huge. In the far distance, Serana could see a herd of cows, though it was a lot smaller than what you'd expect for such a large portion of land. "Mr. Tito would be here," Marco began, "But he has some important business he has to attend to. He said you girls should be able to do just fine based on the information given. Tch, figures. You know for an event being treated on the same level as if the island had just blown up, you'd think he'd postpone his meeting to be hear to deal with the Marines fixing his problem for him. Then again, the fact that only two of them were assigned on the case was also suspicious in its own right.... Was there foul play involved? Things just seemed too..... off with this whole case..... No, it was just her imagination; it'd be ridiculous to think this was all some set up for her and her partner. They just had to focus on the mission. OOC

Valta was pleased that the pointless conversation ground to a halt after she talked. The silence gave her time to think on how to go about tracking the missing cattle. Moving a large amount of cattle would be difficult without leaving obvious tracks. Heavy animals bred for food and not for self defense would leave noticeable tracks. Odds are whoever took them would try to cover their tracks long enough to get away with whatever they were planning to do, so the more important question was “How did they try to cover their tracks?” and “How effective was it?” They were at least questions to keep in mind. After all, the cattle thieves might have just decided to not care, but then again if that were the case then why was she there? So, there had to be a reason. The Ranch came in to view as she was thinking, giving her a bit more info on how things worked. There was a pretty strong metal fence around the area and it was unlikely that the number of cattle that were missile would have jumped over it. So, either there was a hole or someone made one. First things first though, if she was going to track the cattle she needed a good idea of what their prints looked like. ”Need study tracks,” Valta said before spurring her horse to start moving faster to ride off towards the cattle area. Galloping up to the fence it bucked up, not wanting to jump it, so she jumped off of it and ran off towards the remaining cattle. At first the grazing animals didn't notice the short girl running at them but as she got closer the herd began to move, spreading out away from her. Choosing just one she ran after as it tried to run away but it was no use for a predator like her. Once she was in range she jumped up and landed on it's back, leaning over and staring in to it's eyes as she had with the horse. Slowly it moved to a stop and she hopped off, leading it around a bit before letting it go and retracting it's steps to get a good look at how it walked, tracing them back to where it was running from her. The wild girl would walk around there studying them for a bit while she waited for the others to catch up. Her quick chase only made her hope there were people to punch on the other end of this mystery. A slow farm animal like that wasn't even thrilling prey to hunt. OOC

Serana watched as Valta got to work, beginning to chase after some of the cattle in order to get an idea of how they moved and left tracks. Or at least that's what Serana assumed she was doing; it was entirely possible that she had simply seen the herd of cows and wanted to play around with them for a bit like a child. But Serana trusted that her superiors wouldn't have paired her up with someone quite, erhm, unorthodox like that. Not to say that Valta was exactly normal to begin with, but she seemed at least somewhat professional and the type of person to do her job and do it well. Normally this would be the time where a person would think, "unlike so and so," or "in sharp contrast to this person," but not the case here. You see, Serana had been raised in a culture of perfection or the struggle to obtain it ever since she was brought away from the orphanage and raised to be a W.M.D. In that world, there weren't people who didn't strive to be the best and to do their job exactly as necessary. The people weeded out weren't those without the effort or willpower like in most programs, but rather those physically or mental inept to handle the tasks. The program parted ways with many future Marines who might have been excellent soldiers in their own right but weren't quite W.M.D. material, and for that you could say they were unlucky to be drafted by such a program to begin with. Some might consider it a waste of talent, but those in charge obviously felt different. Anyways, the point is she didn't expect Valta to be anything less than a hard working Marine because Serana wasn't familiar with any who weren't. Yeah, she knew they existed, but she wasn't exactly knowledgeable in how to pick up cues or hints that someone might be that type of Marine. So for the moment being, Serana had no choice but to believe that her companion was doing her hardest to set the necessary foundation for a successful mission; she couldn't do this thing by herself, and so she had to rely on others for help. |

Valta continued walking the cattle around for a bit longer, but too much longer was proving to be be more fruitless than helpful. The wild girl began walking back towards the entrance to the field with her eyes on the ground, following the tracks while the thought process of what she was looking for went through her mind. While she was short-spoken that didn't mean her head was empty, just that she didn't see a reason to say more than needed. A lot of cattle were stolen and they had to be moved somehow. Obscuring the tracks by leading them out the way they were most often taken to graze. The idea wouldn't be to completely disappear with the group of cattle, doing so with that much would be impossible without something to make then float. There would be tracks. And there they were. The cattle were no doubt used to their handlers, who were probably good enough to wrangle them with less people or take out smaller groups, but several people trying to get them to move fast yet not too fast as to make faster tracks would cause them to be more sporadic due to the situational unfamiliarity. Livestock are dumb. Keeping an eye on the tracks she had found she made her way back to her horse and jumped back on it leading it over to where she was focusing. ”Tracks found. Follow,” She said as she directed her horse after them and slowly followed the rather hard to parse trail that led off from the ranch. Eventually she turned off it and started following one of the branches, continuing to do so slowly and silently. The trail was just hard enough ti distinguish from normal that a tracker did seem necessary, so at least that meant she wasn't called in for nothing. She just hoped there were cattle thieves to punch at the end of this trail. |

Serana smiled a bit with satisfaction when Valta came back with a lead. Truth be told, Serana could have probably found the trail leading out by herself, but she wasn't too sure if there were going to be any difficulties following the path from there. And as it turns out, she was right: further down the path, it seemed to branch off in several different directions. Most likely so that the cattle weren't always grazing at the same spot, she assumed. Yet Valta seemed to know exactly which path to follow; perhaps there was some minute difference between the paths? Or maybe she was operating solely on instinct? Regardless, Serana had confidence they'd find the cattle in no time. Well it wasn't exactly that fast, but they didn't have to follow the path for too much longer. After maybe 5-10 minutes, they finally approached a rather large hill with a stream wrapping around one side. In the hillside there was a large hole that seemed to lead the way to some sort of cave. Odd, it didn't look like it was naturally, but it looked like it was dug out very recently. Was this some sort of mine perhaps? The tracks seemed to stop around the cave entrance; inside the cave it got somewhat rocky, and while there might have been some hint of tracks here or there, Serana couldn't tell herself. Of course not that it mattered; there was only one way they could have gone, no? "Well then, ready for some dungeon crawling?" she said as she looked towards Valta. OOC

Valta jumped off her horse and moved over to the cave's entrance quietly. She took a look at the tracks that led off into the darkness and then looked back at Serana nodding. ”No horse. Noise. Need quiet.” She said before slowly moving off into the darkness and expecting Serana to follow her at least, if not Marco as well. She'd leave making sure the horses didn't run away to them since today was her first day riding one after all. Slowly she moved forward in the tunnel, not really waiting to let them catch up, but because she needed to be as quite as possible. A Cave would typically be where she would expect to find something, not that there was any cold to hide against here, but hiding was happening none the less. Thankfully the tunnel was straight or she would have to wait for the others to catch up, in lieu of giving a sign indicating which way to go. I mean if they could follow tracks like that they didn't need her. After some time the tunnel began to open up. Out of instinct she moved close to the wall and kept quite as she moved closer, staring to hear some voices but not making out what they were saying yet. Sniffing the air it was no mistake. The cattle were here. She moved a bit back down the path towards the entrance and waited for Serana. It was a bad idea to move to attack without the full pack here. While she hadn't had much training fighting alongside someone else, that was an easy tactic she had experienced in the wild. For not the angry girl waited, hers being a long-held grudge that didn't need to burst out at the wrong moment. There was plenty of time to prepare the strike. |

OOC Nodding in agreement, Serana proceeded to get off of her horse. She turned to Marco, but before she could speak, she was cut off by the man himself. "No, I'm staying out here. Just cause I'm guiding you around doesn't mean I'm fit to help rescue the cattle themselves." Smart man; he knew exactly what she was going to ask about. "Completely understandable. If you could just hold on to our horses..." As she spoke, she handed the reins to her own mount over to Marco. But when she turned to motion for Valta to do the same, the woman was already long gone, presumably into the depths of the cave. "Figures. We'll be right back." And with that, Serana was off, making it clear to Marco that he would have to get a hold of the third horse's rein himself. Probably best he did it anyways; he was the horse boy here. Anyways, Serana began to descend into the cave herself, trying to keep as quiet as possible while still trying to make up ground. She had no idea where Valta had gone once inside the cave, so she decided to just stop at the first fork. But to her surprise, there was no such fork; before she knew it, she had met back up with Valta, who seemed to have been heading back towards Serana. Presumably Valta gave Serana a quick brief on what she found out, or at the very least stayed silent and piqued Serana's curiosity. Either way, Serana began to slowly move forward herself, trying to get a good grasp on the situation. Keeping herself pressed up against the wall, she slowly approached the end of the tunnel as it opened up to a large sphere-like space. There were torches put up all over the place, giving the area decent lighting, and there were stairs leading down from the current tunnel to get to the bottom. In the middle, there was a large, makeshift pen that contained who knows how many cattle. Along side the pens, there were several people dressed in what could only be described as hippie clothing: head bands, tie-dye shirts, bicycle shorts, you name it. She couldn't hear what any of them were saying, but she could count at least 6 at the moment. There seemed to be no other place for more to be save for a tunnel that was branching out close to where they were standing. Serana turned to Valta, who she presumed was right next to her. Whispering, she asked her, "Wanna sneak down, or just full on attack?" |
