This island felt very poetic to Kaji. Somehow it seemed fitting that he was stuck here, of all places, once more. A large rusted pit, broken and crumbling, held together presumably by sheer willpower and strained technical skill. While the island was held together by support beams and metal bars, Kaji was starting to feel as if he relaxed his arms and let his gauntlets come off his hands might crumble away to nothing without the leather and metal holding them on his arms. He'd been training feverishly again, insisting to himself and anyone that noticed the strange man banging his hands against walls or sprinting across the island that it was simply routine. Kaji was a bit of a fitness freak, but even for him this was an extreme he only went to when there was a challenge ahead, or when he was upset. Currently it was the latter. He was stranded and alone again, the two prospective crew mates he'd gathered gone off. It certainly wasn't the first time this had happened, but it was the first time since he entered the Grand Line. His entire career as a pirate had been spent working himself to the bone, trying to become stronger and build himself a crew, but something always happened. They left and never returned, if they accepted his request at all. When he was still new to the life it was easier to shrug off rejection and think "they'll stay once I prove myself", but after coming so far and working so hard, he was starting to become... discouraged. As Kaji ran, the docks came into sight. He could see a ship covered in iron plates, hear the sound of hammers pounding. That was, or at least would be, his new vessel. An old decommissioned military vessel that had seen hundreds of not thousands of battles at sea. Though it was falling apart, being the superstitious sort he was Kaji couldn't help but want a ship with that kind of battle experience. With his smiting skills, and the help of some hired hands, he was basically turning it into a cyborg. It would be a sturdy floating titan of wood and steel. Sadly, it would most likely be carrying a captain and no crew. Kaji furrowed his brow and ran harder, his feet pounding against the dirt. He was without his jacket, his personal symbol of status as a captain. For now, he was not captain of the Draco Pirates. He was simply a pirate, a martial artist, and nothing more. |

Faolan rested his chin on his hands as the Tippycanoe drifted towards the docks ahead, he was lost in deep thought and no small portion of regret for what he had done some days before. Abandoning a friend was one of the worst things one could do, but with what had happened high in the skies above Salt Island he could not allow Islay to continue accompanying him. These Storm Pirates were able to construct a flying castle superweapon and had claims that there were at least a dozen more planned as well as having a literal small army on their side during the encounter and it would have been far too dangerous for him to continue alongside Faolan. Pulling down the sails so his tiny boat drifted to the dock not very far from an ironclad warship that was undergoing refit he used a paddle to guide it in the rest of the way, bumping gently with the pier and with a slight grunt he pulled himself onto the platform. Waiting a few moments he watched for the toll taker to arrive and charge him for the docking rights, not seeing any arriving he shrugged and lifted the sailor rucksack from the boat that contained all of his valuables and necessary supplies. It would be rather stupid to leave them out in the open, especially on an island with known criminal connections and no government presence. This whole section of the dock seemed to be deserted, the Fir Bolg wondered what was going on. The only person he could see was someone rushing at a full run towards the docks. Stepping onto the cobblestone with the sack being set on the ground from one shoulder he quickly checked the hilt of the double sword he had gotten from the Feathered Knight on the sky castle, something about the man showed obvious dark malice and it would not do to have any issues getting his weapon out to defend himself. "Sir, I am here seeking out a band of murderers that may have passed through this island." He spoke as soon as the man was within reasonable listening distance. From his shirt he withdrew a page with a drawing of Connell on it, the pirate from Faolan's own hometown that had led the Storm Pirates and evidently provided them with the hurricane generating weapon they used to scour Salt Island. |

As deep in his thoughts as he was, Kaji didn't fully recognize what was in front of him at first. Looking straight ahead, he certainly saw the large hairy man before him, but the size and sheer level of hairiness didn't register until the stranger spoke up and caught Kaji's attention. A bit dazed at first, he skidded to a halt and stood there trying to slow his heavy breathing. The towering individual explained he was after some murderers, and pulled out a drawn picture. Wiping the sweat from his brow with one hand, Kaji scratched the side of his head with the other as he took a good look. He had a pretty good memory when it came to faces, and was pretty confident he hadn't seen this guy before. "Sorry, he doesn't look familiar to me. I'm not a local though, so there's a good chance he slipped by me." He looked over his shoulder into town and pointed vaguely. "Over in that direction there's a village. It's pretty small, everybody knows everybody, so if he's come through there someone's bound to know. There's only one general store, too. I'd start there if I were you." His breathing was back to normal by now, it didn't take long for his heart rate to drop back to resting levels either. After only a few moments of conversation, all traces that he'd been running were gone aside from the remaining sweat around his hairline. "In fact, I can give you a hand looking for clues. I know a few people here, I'm sure one of them will have spotted this guy if he did pass through. Based on the solo ride and the lack of uniform, I'm guessing either you're a bounty hunter, or this is a personal deal. Either way, I'm sure you could use a hand." Kaji's usual cheerful demeanor was the last thing to return to normal. He looked up at the stranger with a genuine smile. "I'm Kaji, by the way. What do they call you, big guy?" |

Faolan felt something was wrong about this man he had just met, as though he had some yet unrevealed terribleness. The paranoid part of the blade dancer's mind was warning him that this may be a set-up. The only person around these docks, on the first island past Salt Island in the direction Connell had most likely come from. Still if he was to make any sort of progress on this he would have to start somewhere. "I am The Little Wolf, Faolan Maedoc. An adventurer from Silver Scotia. If you have been here any length of time you would have noticed this man's passing as his method of transportation was rather... exceptional and noteworthy." There had been a few details the marines had been insistent that Faolan never reveal. The fact that the Storm Pirates had a superweapon built into a flying castle large enough to carry a squadron of warships was one of those details that were to be kept quiet. "It is not bounty money I seek though, this man is a countryman of mine and he may be the largest part responsible for the recent disaster on Salt Island, he has the blood of thousands and the crippling of tens of thousands on his hands and I intend to see him to justice. Even so the justice of your people, to be tortured for years in Impel Down before finally passing is not for him if I can catch him. His end will be swift from the blade or the rope." Having declared this, Faolan reached to his neck and pulled the gold and jeweled rubix cube from under his shirt, the prize taken from the pirates he had battled prior to crossing the Reverse Mountain so long ago. With deft movements he slid the pieces around and the cube popped open the instant it was solved, revealing a hollow inside containing his logpose. The needle of the almost magic seeming compass was still pointed directly at the island. "I will take you up on the offer of assistance. It will probably take some days before the next island is set, I plan to track upward along this route for a while in case he bypassed it before I circle around in a wider search." |

"Flashy guy huh? I'll ask the guys working on my ship to keep an eye out for him then." Kaji liked to travel in style himself, usually. Most pirates with any sort of money did. He wasn't sure if people who became pirates were naturally inclined to show off, or if it was the other way around. Either way, Kaji listened to the rest of Faolan's story and was genuinely impressed. He seemed like a pretty impressive guy, and he even had a cool quest to adventure for. A moment later, he even revealed the coolest log pose Kaji had ever seen. Helping this guy out would definitely be a welcome break from the monotony of training and self pity he'd been stuck in. "It's a deal then. Give me a minute to talk to my guys and we'll head off." Kaji quickly jogged over towards the docks and jumped onto it, scaling the side and pulling himself onto the deck. A few seconds later Faolan could hear someone on deck reprimanding Kaji for this, then the mutter of brief conversation. Kaji then jumped back from the deck of the ship to the dock and started walking. "Alright, let's get tracking." Beneath his wry smile, plans were already forming in Kaji's mind. Despite his poor luck when it came to actual achievements, he was pretty good at falling randomly into amazing adventures. This guy was waist deep in something interesting, Kaji could sense it. If he got to catch a glimpse of what that something was, he'd consider it worth helping this guy out. It might be just the thing to lift his spirits back up. He motioned for Faolan to follow as he walked by. "Onto Cango village first then. Unless you plan on camping or staying in that one man water vehicle of yours, you're probably going to end up staying at the Inn there. Even if you don't, it's a good place to keep an eye on. Might be able to find out if he landed on some other part of the island too. What kind of ship are we looking for, by the way? Something that might be able to dock unconventionally?" While Kaji was guiding Faolan away, another small ship was speeding towards the island. Larger than the vessel Faolan had been riding in, but not by much, it sliced through the water at remarkable speed for a ship with no sail on it's mast and certainly no engine on it's wooden frame. Even at it's speed, it likely wouldn't reach the island for a few minutes, and one was unlikely to spot it from its current distance. And yet, the closer it got, the stranger it seemed. |

Faolan shrugged and waited while Kaji went off to talk to his crew, when he returned Faolan once again had the sailor duffel bag resting on his shoulder. He did not have to consider the smaller man's question, there was an answer already planned since it was going to be an obvious question. "His means of escape was a launched stone that was able to glide on the wind at least until it was unable to be tracked. His...vessel before was a mobile castle complete with docks for a small squadron of warships. After I had destroyed his means of attacking Salt Island he tried to ram the ship into the town but I was able to redirect it enough to barely avoid crushing everything, allowing it to be recovered mostly intact. I'm sure that more details will arrive here soon concerning what happened and they will be more exact but I am currently under oath to the Marines to keep certain things secret for now. There's not much else to say other than I expect that him and the people who hired him were returning to some place called the Sky Islands, which I have found no information on either." When he had asked the marines about that one the commanding officer had been rather cagey on the issue so Faolan had not pressed the issue but a few other inquiries turned up nothing on the place that was concrete, a few stories or mentions of legends about the Sky Islands being a flying archipelago. Faolan would have dismissed such a thing as complete fabrication but the lodestone heart of the flying castle was ultimate proof that something so big could be made to stay in the air. "Well then, to change the subject, that is a rather impressive ship there that you are having rebuilt. Why don't you tell me about it while we head to town. My talking so much after days alone at sea has made me rather thirsty." |

Kaji looked at Faolan with such wonder, it was as if he were gazing upon the flying rock himself. He'd always been a sucker for a good story, but as far as he could tell this guy was completely serious. He discussed a fortress that dispatched warships as casually as one would an ordinary battleship. Either this guy had a remarkable dedication to fabrication, or he was being completely honest. With no reason to be skeptical, Kaji decided to believe in the latter, and thus was sincerely impressed. "God damn! Sounds like you've been having a lot more luck than I have when it comes to the Grand Line, at least so far! I've only been here a few months, and so far the most interesting things I've done are fight spies, meet a celestial dragon or two, and die." He looked off to the side, recalling the bittersweet memories of being run through by a swordsman, and then just kind of walking it off. Knocking a floating rock out of the sky sounded significantly more pleasant, but not that much more unbelievable. "I have heard of Sky Islands before, but I didn't know if that was a real thing or not. I gotta admit, I wasn't in the best of moods before you showed up, but now I'm all excited again!" Normally, this would be where Kaji tried to recruit the impressive individual to join his crew, but the words seemed to get caught in his throat. Somehow he just didn't feel as charismatic and impressive as he usually did. He felt, both literally and figuratively, small next to this person. It reminded him of just how far he still had to go. Hopefully a chance to prove himself would show up soon, and he'd be more like his old self again. Surprisingly, Faolan seemed interested in what Kaji considered a downgraded version of his original vision for a ship. Being the extravagant individual he was, he was expecting something with more red and gold, more cannons, possibly something that shot fire. Relatively speaking it was rather plain, but he was hoping to work on it when conditions were better. The locals were barely willing to work on a ship for an outspoken pirate, they downright refused to put cannons on it. "I'll buy you a drink when we get to town, in return for that crazy story. As for my project, I bought a ship that had one foot in the grave. Old thing, fit to be retired, but it had history, you know? The last guys to sail it didn't exactly make it across the Grand Line, but they were explorers. This ship has probably seen enough incredible things to last most people a lifetime, and the crew quit before it did. It'd been sitting here for years waiting for them to come back, and they never did. So I decided I'd throw my money into giving it new life. I'm a smith myself, so I thought I'd give it a nice new suit of armor, get it cleaned up, and hope it's still got some of that adventuring spirit in the wood." As they approached town Kaji was given a now familiar reception. Some watched sternly, some seemed to ignore his presence, most simply minded their own business. A few did a double take when they saw Faolan, however. None hung too long on him, but a few did seem concerned. The majority of the islanders were rather jaded to the presence of strange individuals, and really only reacted when something dangerous was occurring. For now, all was quiet. Faolan had nothing but respect for the decision to restore the ship. Even at the distance he had seen it, it seemed solid and as he had no little skill in the shipwright's art he knew that some ships had a sort of spirit that just refused to be held down when the vessel wanted to move forward. It had seemed too that this man had his own share of, in some ways more impressive, adventures. As they entered Faolan had to almost double over to get through the door and even once inside he had an awkward posture to keep his head from smashing through the bar's ceiling. "Well, it seems you too have a lot to speak of as well as I would be very interested in this particular story. As the guest though I will have to take the honor of buying the first round. One moment please." Faolan walked to the bartender who had to crane his neck backwards to look the blade dancer in the face. Reaching into a pocket he withdrew several coins, solid gold with a winged woman stamped on one side and some unknown writing on the other. The coins were so heavy they did not even bounce when they struck the bar top. "A round for everyone here. Food for me and my friend, a keg of dark stout for me and whatever he's having to drink for him. Do not let our mugs go empty until this is gone." Faolan spoke loud enough that everyone in the bar could hear it, and intentionally so. This was a bit of obvious theatre, not well done by any means but it should easily get the point across. "Do not thank me, this is being paid for by this man..." Faolan withdrew the poster with Connell's face on it, the one he had shown Kaji not long before. Pulling a knife from a nearby diner's plate he stabbed the picture between the eyes to pin it to one of the posts holding the building's roof up. "This is Connell, him and his Storm Pirates are of great interest to me. The Marines have their vessel, I have their treasure vaults. I am very interested in finding out where they have come from, and more importantly where they have run off to. Any who help me track them down will be extremely well rewarded." |

The bartender eyed the coins suspiciously at first, but upon picking one up and giving a pinch between his fingers he seemed more than satisfied. He returned with Faolan's stout, and a mug of dark red liquid for Kaji. Kaji thanked the man and started drinking while Faolan explained his quest. Kaji himself stared up at the poster while he drank, wondering what kind of person he was looking at. They certainly seemed rather accomplished, not that he was looking up to them except in a literal sense. Faolan was clearly holding back quite a bit of information, but he'd given enough for Kaji to get a sense of the level of pirate this Connell was. It was a level he'd been chasing for quite some time now. How long had it been? It felt like so much had happened, but it really hadn't been that long ago he was just setting out to sea. One of the bar patrons got up from their table and walked over. It was a tall woman with long brown hair, who flashed a smile of familiarity at Kaji, who nodded and smiled in response. She introduced herself as Mary Ellen, and explained the townsfolk keep to themselves mostly, but keep a close eye on the news. She did have a bit of information, mostly through word of mouth, about some activity that seemed to match Faolan's description. After Mary was done providing Faolan with everything she knew, Kaji spoke up. "Hey, Faolan. If you don't mind me asking, what are you going to do after you catch this guy? Are you gunna head back home for good, or keep traveling? A guy like you seems pretty capable, and there's a lot to see you know." |

Faolan thanked the woman and made a note of her name but her information did not have anything to it that Faolan had not already spoken of and it was those details he had left out that he was looking for to separate the wheat from the chaff here. In any case if this was the only thing he got to work with he could follow it up later, nothing was to be gained by rushing head first into every blind pathway he came across. "Well going home is not really an option for me, not at this point or any other I can see in the future. There's too little there, a land that spends months of winter in darkness and months of summer without the sun ever setting. Plains and overgrown forests, old ruined cities, once one has walked across my homeland I expect I've seen it all. Here on the grand line I have accomplished much in a very short time and I intend to see this thing through. When I climbed atop the Reverse Mountain I had sworn to cross to it from the other side, and I have yet to be dissuaded from that plan." Another person, one looking fairly nervous was moving up to the table, cap in hand wringing it with the stress inside him. It was pretty clear that he was not comfortable at all with the very idea of talking to Faolan but the promise of money and the proof that it existed was too much for him. "Excuse me sirs, I don't know much of anything about what you were talking about with the sky pirates but I heard talk from a merchant crew that came back from up-line that there was a flying castle riding on top of a bastard storm they saw by Arcadia... I thought it was stupid but when you said Storm Pirates it was the first thing I could think of..." Faolan's heart skipped a beat, this was exactly the detail he needed since he had not only not said a thing about the fortress carved into a flying island that the pirates had used as their base but the fact that it was atop a storm spoke that they may have been using their hurricane generator to cover their travels! Reaching into his pouch Faolan pulled out several of the thick gold coins. "This is the information I was wanting. Meet with me tonight, with every bit of detail you can remember about this story." Turning back to Kaji he apologized "Sorry about that, I did not expect to actually get useful news this early into my search. I cannot let this lead get too stale so I expect I'll have to be off with the morning tide." |

"I'm sorry to hear about your home, but I have to admit, I was hoping you'd say you'll keep going." Kaji said with a smile. "Who knows? Maybe you'll retire back home and fix the place up. Sounds like it could be real popular with night owls like me." He wondered if he'd run into Faolan another time, maybe when he'd gotten back to business as a proper pirate. Right now he didn't feel as much like sharing as he usually did, but he promised himself he'd swap stories if they met again. Another person approached Faolan, giving some more information. Faolan seemed very pleased by the tip, it matched exactly what he'd been describing so far. Kaji felt satisfied that he'd managed to get Faolan the lead he'd been looking for. When Faolan apologized for needed to pursue the information as quickly as possible and be off by morning, Kaji waved dismissively. "There's nothing to be sorry for, pal. If I were hot on the trail of somebody like you described, I'd be going full steam ahead too. Knock em dead, big guy." Kaji got up from his seat and strolled towards the door. He was feeling invigorated, and thought he'd get back to training. Faolan had his investigating to get to, and soon he'd be out to fight people in a flying castle that spat out storms. Kaji wondered what kind of adventure he could get into that could match that, so he'd have a good story to tell if they ever bumped into each other again. He stopped at the door and looked over his shoulder. "Hey, Faolan." Kaji could hear his usual next line clearly in his head. Join my crew, he would say, wrapped up in some dramatic display or well worded speech. He'd offer to help take down the Storm Pirates, prove his worth as a captain, and whatever else he thought would sell the deal. Instead, he smiled with a hint of sadness in his eye.
