Thatch didn't fear being recognized. He had changed a lot since he last came to Cactus Island, and he was certain none of the priests would know his new face. Though, even if they did, it wasn't an issue. He hadn't antagonized them in any way. In fact, he fought with them against a band of grave robbers. He made quite a few friends during that campaign, and he'd lost a few as well. That winter, even on this summery island, was probably the worst of his career. It was some of the dirtiest and meanest fighting he'd ever seen. Religion on one side and profit on the other, both thinking they were in the right. It was ugly business. Thatch had opted to wear his classic yellow coat, as gaudy as it was, over tan pants and a white shirt. The island wasn't particularly hot considering its arid environment. It felt more like an oasis than a desert. He was riding on back of Veritas, his large brown gelding, and he was at ease in the saddle. The first time he came here he didn't have his own horse. This was another reason few would recognize him. It wasn't often that individuals owned their own steed. Many armies had entire stables full for cavalry use, but very few people outside of the armies of the world actually knew how to care for one. On his left hip sat his saber, bouncing against the saddle. His rifle was strapped to his back and his lance was laid across the pommel. It was long but not overly so. Besides, he had the horse at a leisurely pace. He wasn't afraid of anyone in the crowd accidentally getting struck by it. Most were conscious enough of where they were going to move out of the way. Whenever someone passed Thatch by, aside from ducking under his lance, they'd take a good look at his face. His new head resembled a helmet in the right lighting, it seems, and many suspected him of being a man under a mask. Masks were a sign of criminals or those who wished to bring harm. Often individuals regarded him with suspicion. A few merchant guards even went so far as to grip the hilt of their blades as if anticipating an attack. Thatch had no plans to bring harm to anyone. He was here today specifically to honor his friends who fell in the line of duty. He was here to visit their graves. In the packs attached behind his saddle, a bouquet of flowers was sticking out. Most people eased up when their eyes finally saw it. Turning off the street, Thatch started making his way towards the graves where men he once knew, men who he fought and laughed with, were buried. He hadn't said a word since he arrived on the island. He knew, now, what he needed to do with his life. He wanted to apologize to those that already found their way to peace for not being able to bring them along. |

Across the small portion of the vast ocean that he had seen, Mithras had seen nothing like Cactus Island, and the multitude of graves that littered the mountain’s peaks. It seemed like the popular thing to do here was to pay respects to the dead, but the manner in which it was done struck him as odd. As he understood it, the graves marked the burying places of soldiers, but such a practice was foreign at best to the warrior. Burying was typically reserved for criminals and deserters where he was from, with cremation being the only reliable way to assure that one crosses the bridge of swords into the otherworld, rather than having their spirit wander the earth. He gave a short prayer to one of his gods, then touched the iron band of his shield and spat to avert the inherent evil of so many bound souls. It seemed as if the people of this island had their way of doing things that worked, even if it was not what he believed. He spat once more, accepting that these people’s god was likely as powerful as any other. Amidst the weeping and boisterous mourners, Mithras walked slowly and silently, stopping in front of each headstone that had gone unmarked, and paying his respects. Though he had not known them, and they may have stood for everything he was against, he felt a connection with them, somehow. This was felt less so with the older and crumbling markers, but more so the newer ones. Though he had no way to prove it, his intuition as a warrior made him feel as if the older stones did in fact mark scoundrels, while the newer ones resonated as the burying place of soldiers. Incidentally, these graves were also oddly devoid of mourners, but that was just fine with Mithras, who took hunched over and sat down quietly with the bones of men like him. |

The clopping of Veritas's feet rang across the small clearing as Thatch rode towards the graves of his fellows. You couldn't tell, but he was smiling. Even if he was sad thinking of those who passed, he was happy that he had a chance to know them at all. They were part of the puzzle that made him who he was. They were part of his path to peace, even if his peace will be as bloody as any war. Surprisingly, there was someone else near the graves paying respect as well. This was unusual, as most of the priests preferred to pray at the older graves. Newer ones didn't feel as "sacred" to them, even if those newer graves held men and women who fought for those very same priests. It was a damn shame. Still, the fact that someone else remembered was enough for Thatch. So long as these men's memory lived on then they would never truly die. One day he'd join them, after all, since no one can live forever. He just hoped that when he finally does die he does it well. His attempted suicide was the lowest point in his life, and he never intended to return to that point again. "Hiyo, traveler!" Called Thatch as he dismounted from Veritas. His boots hit the ground and his body clinked a bit as his metal arm ribbed against one of the buttons on the saddle. Careful not to accidentally show any kind of aggressive motion, Thatch took his rifle off his back and set it in the saddlepacks while pulling out the small bouquet of flowers. Grabbing Veritas's reins, he walked towards the graves and, subsequently, the other man paying his respects. "Are you paying your respects to the eleventh banner too?" Asked the man in his metallic voice as he pulled out a flower and set it on the first grave he recognized. He started setting a single flower on each grave as he moved. "I'm guessing that means you fought with us, then. Sorry for not recognizing you." |

Mithras looked over to see a helmed man on horseback approaching the gravesite, giving a small nod as he was greeted. “Well met, friend.” He replied, sizing up the man and deciding that he was a fellow soldier. His brow twitched a bit as he wanted him unsling the rifle from his back, but he held his tongue. Even if he thought firearms were dishonest tools of war, it was likely not this man’s fault that he fought without honor, after all, it was how most war was waged anymore. The other man’s voice seemed a bit odd, not the familiar echo of a helmet, but rather something that seemed unnatural. Mithras was given little time to ponder the nature of the man’s speech however, as he was asked if he knew and served with the men buried here, as he apparently had. “No, I can’t say I even know where or why these men died, even this method of burial is unfamiliar with me, to be honest. There is an inclination though, to be with those who walked the same path as you. Warriors who have had the chance to cross the bridge of swords into the other world…” He spoke slowly, in his own gravely voice. “I am a Romulin myself, once one of the most decorated commanders of the nation's famed war band.” He smirked at the last part, then began to laugh. “Now I am nothing but a sentimental fool seeking a warrior’s death.” Still smiling, he shook his head and smiled. Not wanting to jam his spear’s butt into the ground where a dead man laid or lean it on a poor soul’s head stone, he stooped down and laid it on the ground, touching the iron rim of his shield as he stood back up. He extended his now-free hand to the other man. “Mithras.” Edited by Tengu, Aug 16 2015, 07:04 PM.

Judas had been staying on Cactus Island for the past two days. He was mostly resting from his long travel in this small, uncomfortable boat. He found this strange island only by pure chance. Luckily, the grave keeper let him sleep in his home, the time he recovered his energy, in exchange for a small amount of beli. ________ Today, Judas had woken up late. His nose was runny, but he hadn’t any real sickness and it would pass soon. He immediately dressed up in his standard attire, a fuchsia shirt under a long, black coat, a pair of geta sandals and his classic bamboo hat. He went outside before being reminded he needed to pay the grave keeper. "Hey, sorry, young man, you forgot to pay me!", said the old codger. Judas knew very well he could just ignore him and leave, but he had some money to spare. "Here you go, old man.", he said, throwing a small bag of beli in his direction. There was nothing to do except mourn the dead on this island, so he decided to go and take a look before leaving. Judas did not know how and why those people died, but he still had some respect to those people. He walked in direction of the graves with his sword on his back and his pistol sitting on his right hip. He hid his face with his bamboo hat in a way he would be sure no one would pay attention to him. Arrived there, he saw two men, the first one with a strange mask and a horse, and the second one, a warrior of some sorts, he supposed. Judas didn’t want to take part of the conversation they were having, not immediately anyway. So he lied down, using a tombstone to rest his back on, and listened to their conversation. The masked man had a strange metallic voice, like Judas had never heard before. This made him a bit uneasy, but nothing more. He had fought in a war here. Now this explained to immense quantity of tombstones. It seemed that the warrior was a Romulin, or a commander as he explained. "Mithras.", the warrior presented himself as. Judas didn’t want to attract attention but he could stop it: "COUGH!" After that, the two men would notice him, he thought. |
