The Summer Exalt
[-----]
Account Name: Shizuochan
[-----]
Basic Character Information Name: Summer Exalt Nickname: "Exalt-is-not-a-noun." Age: 17 Gender: Male Race: Human Affiliation: Pirate Bounty: 0 Achievements: Anointed Von'Ak (Heir-Champion) of the Vas'Koi. Profession:
- Martial Artist: A Martial Artist is someone who specializes in hand-to-hand combat, completely or very close to unarmed. They usually have good insight in the aspects of weight, balance and movement of the body. Characters with this profession have access to certain additional traits and may create "Stance" techniques.
- Inventor: An Inventor is a man or woman with knowledge in how various mechanical devices work. They have good insight in how blueprints work, and can upgrade weapons, build gadgets and battle engines if they have enough materials.
Position: Wanderer.
Physical Appearance Height: 5'11 Weight: 165lbs Hair: Red. Eye: Hazel. (Not-Red). Clothing/Accessories: The Vas'Koi are a simple people, and have no real need for high-fashion. The Summer Exalt wears minimalist, endlessly practical clothing; jackets, undershirts and pants drenched and dried through with ebony dye. Leather-working and cordwaining are not prevalent amongst the Vas'Koi, and thus footwear is a foreign concept to the Summer Exalt; he will go bare-feet, or - in the case of treacherous ground - don bandages.
While not an accessory per say, a white-cloth eye-patch covers his ruined left eye.
General Appearance: Young and lean is his countenance, but his frame is carried by the confidence of maturity. His stance is typically upright and stalwart to an uncomfortable degree - rigid and inflexible. His features are smallish - neck thin, face pointed, wiry lips, jagged nose, narrowed eyes (although one has been damaged beyond repair). Those very features are often held solemnly, and Summer finds smiles and visages of endearment to be difficult; in assuming those expressions, he generally manages only to appear contemptuous.
His most notable feature save for the ruined eye is his right arm, made Vas. Steel.
The Character Personality: Duty and then death. The Vas'Koi operate in this manner. Each man has a calling, a pre-ordained position granted when they come into their physical peak. As Von'Ak - the Heir-Champion - Summer feels a modicum of pride, but understands that duty is paramount. He is the one who will lead to Vas'Koi to salvation from the Far'Shad, he is the one who will take his people to new heights. For him, to fail in this task is shameful, and to run away from the calling something else entirely, significantly worse.
It should be noted that he does not personally fault those who are not capable of matching the task and duty they are given. However, it is his opinion that those who are not capable of accepting their pre-ordained task and duty are also not worthy of life itself.
Duty overwhelms him, and as such his social skills are lacking. Outside of the Vas'Koi, his grasp on the commonly spoken language of the world is rudimentary at best, although he has been learning at a reasonably impressive rate. What has remained static is his curt, unkind nature. Kindness is a folly in Summer's eyes. Fairness, the ability to judge and ascertain a situation by context and a person's worth by merit, is much more important.
Hometown: Land of the Vas'Koi, some hidden part of the Grand Line.
Notes on the Vas'Koi
Under the swelter of summer, we are called for so that they may take our measure.
Manuscript: Assessment of the Land Vas’Koi by the Scholar Demetrius
There is nothing more fascinating than the assessment of island civilization in all its stages; embryonic, infancy, adolescence, the stability of adulthood, and the faltering of the ancient. Inevitably, an island and all its people are a microcosm of the world, and in isolation are therefore perceived by its people as the world in and of itself – this latter perception is perhaps the core of the phenomena, the metamorphosis of deluded isolation turned into functional, systemic order.
It is important that I remain perfectly hidden, my existence unacknowledgable, so that this isolation may continue in earnest, so that the ignorance that informs their way of life prevail. I have been watching them, for sixty-seven years, and in these years, it as if a sacred duty of mine to uphold their ignorance of me.
Ignorance is often equated to stupidity. In and of itself this is an astonishing ignorance and a self-damning statement, as no man in this world can claim omnipotence. Indeed, the Vas’Koi is a particularly intelligent society – their scope is limited, but keen, and their practicality is astonishing in its manifestation.
Perhaps the most prevalent example of this is the designation of roles amongst its members. The majority of our world embraces the idea of choice and freedom, the freedom to pursue scholarly endeavors, or to enlist within the marines. The Vas’Koi are more akin to a hive of bees – there is the Queen figure, the authority, and then others, chosen and selected as if worker and soldier bees.
These boys are nameless when they are called for their Choosing. |
They strike out our left eyes, to see if we flinch.
The Warrior Caste, Notes by the Scholar Demetrius
Word association. Simple. Telling. Warriors – Mas’Ran - are brave, strong, stalwart and steadfast. Readers will ask why; if the Vas’Koi are in true isolation, why must there be warriors? The Vas’Koi are isolated from any other civilization, yes, but the threats on their own lands are numerous. Chief amongst them are the Fah’Shad, the skinless ones. I have seen them, husks stripped of their outer dermis, and yet frightening in their constitutions. Against their feral might, the Vas’Koi… are stumbling.
Thus, this conscription is absolutely necessary. The boys – nameless one and all – have been moderately steeled for the threat that looms over their existence each day. And yet even so, they are not thoroughly steeled for the trial that awaits them – at least, not all of them. The Vas’Koi strike out their left eyes with bull-whips, cracking with the speed of thunder. Those who cry are not fit to be Mas’Ran. Those who scream are not fit to be Mas’Ran. Those who tremble are not fit to be Mas’Ran.
But those who are seen to have flinched? Who are quick enough to perceive the threat of the whip, its direction, its aim and to move with suitable purpose?
They can be taught not to react in retreat, but yes, they are fit to be Mas’Ran. |
They shoot at our blindside, to see if we are truly keen.
The Hunter Caste, Notes by the Scholar Demetrius
The Mas’Ran are brave, strong, blessed with the instinct to react. They will be needed in the battle to come. But the Si’Rath are the hunters, transcendent in their perception – they alone will be adequate to pursue the agile game of Vas’Koi lands. And while they hunt, they will be hunted – the Skinless will be upon them. To balance playing the role of the gazelle and the wolf all at once, something more than strength is required. The elder Si’Rath whistle as they pull back on their bows.
They release.
Some of the newly anointed Mas’Ran are struck. They will not perish, the Si’Rath’s aim is true enough to avoid death. The struck will not be Si’Rath, but will remain Mas’Ran – no honor is lost in this.
The more fleet of foot, the more perceptive, are able to move, to avoid the agonizing prick of the arrow. These Mas’Ran are fit to be Si’Rath.
But there is one young Mas’Ran yet who has done something more. |
The arrow pierces my palm, and I have claimed it for my own.
The Champion, Notes by the Scholar Demetrius
Forty-three years ago, I witnessed a young Mas’Ran in his Si’Rath trial. As the arrow fired, he turned with grace, elegance, eloquence of movement, and a decisive purpose. He caught the arrow that was sent to him, arrogantly snatching it between thumb and index finger. He had stuck his tongue out, wagged it as if in mockery. His insolence was met with applause.
He was anointed the Champion. Von. They claimed the arm that caught the arrow, and replaced it with one of Vas. Steel. A crown for the mighty.
The young Mas’Ran I see before me has achieved a weak imitation of what his predecessor accomplished. His fingers have grasped at air, and the arrow had made ruins of his palm. But he dared to reach, and in his own way, he has claimed the arrow for his own.
Assertion.
Authority.
Champion.

And in the moment of my crowning, a stranger.
A Confession, Demetrius
I have failed in my duties as the Watchful Scholar. Discovered, in the sixty-seventh trial that I have overseen. I am ashamed to say that I am no longer merely an observer; the mere discovery of my presence will alter the Vas’Koi immensely. I have delivered a revelation that will ruin what they are. I exist. We exist.
I am ashamed.
My grasp on the Vas’Koi language has been rendered fluent by time and exposure yet… in their panic, I find them difficult to understand. The Elder Si’Rath did not shoot me down immediately. They do not view me as a threat. But they view the group that I come from – us – as one, certainly. And yet even still I am not purged like a captured Fah’Shad.
I live. But for what purpose?
I am ashamed.
Forgive me.
Demetrius. Sullied Participant. |
His book of symbols is full of words and constructs I cannot understand, I will learn them, and claim them for my own. The first word he teaches me is ‘Demetrius’. He says this word and points immediately to himself. I assume the word ‘Demetrius’ is worthless. Still, I have claimed him nonetheless.
He will take me to the rest of his kind.
And if they are strong, they will help us end the Fah’Shad.
I was raised under the swelter of the sun, exalted on its brightest day.

Abilities and Possessions Combat: Summer treats combat very simply. He will walk up, and strike. Evasion and dodging is not what the boy is used to - he will take what punishment he is owed, and dole it out in kind. His blindside is, as expected, habitually exposed; he will have to learn to correct this if he is to survive. Weaponry: Vas'Pan. His arm of steel (Iron-Quality, funnily enough). Details provided in Cyborg trait description. Items: N/A Beli: 500,000 SD Earned: 0 Stat Points: 32 Advancement Points: 0 SD Remaining: 0 Stats:

Traits:
- Basic Cyborg (1 Trait): This is the most basic level of cyborg, and the most commonly encountered type in the blues. A Basic Cyborg begins with up to 3M Beli worth of modifications. Their bodies are made out of Iron and do not vary from their original size. They may have one concealed weapon per arm or leg, and one basic system per other appendage. Note that these weapons or systems are very basic.
Appendages - 1.5M Beli/per Torso - 3M Beli
"Only two men of the Vas'Koi are permitted to possess the Vas'Pan - Steel-Arm. One is the Von, the Champion - leader of the Vas'Koi. The other is Von-Ak, the Heir-Champion - his successor. The Vas'Pan is granted in a ritualistic ceremony in which the wielder has his corresponding arm quite crudely amputated, to make way for the metal replacement.
For all intents and purposes, this is an Iron-quality arm with the same dimensions as Summer's actual human arm. The metal-work is rather crude, rusted, with dents and eroded ridges. Summer is - disgustingly enough - clearly not the first wearer of the arm.
As the Vas'Koi are not sufficiently technologically advanced thanks to their isolation, the Vas'Pan as of this point in time does not utilize a fuel system, and as such is not capable of being a conduit for Empowered Techniques.
Scholar Demetrius theorizes that the Vas'Pan is a suitable base for upgrades, should the opportunity arise."
- Born Leader (1 Trait): Characters with this trait are gifted with the ability to command respect and admiration from others. Sentient NPCs are easier to sway over to the side of those with this trait. They may gain information, calm down the angry, and sometimes even placate hostile adversaries. Additionally, those normally friendly to strangers find themselves easily enamoured with the character. The user also gains one NPC henchman, who behaves as a crew NPC and is controlled by the player of the main character. They are exceedingly loyal to their ‘master’. NPC Name: Scholar Demetrius.
- Fate of the Strong (1 Trait): By placing traits in Fated, you lock them until the next time you earn a trait. You may put as many traits as you have into fated. In the meantime, you get a temporary boost of (# of traits in fated, multiplied by 3) to your strength stat.
- Punching Mastery (1 Prof Trait): The character has attained mastery in one specific weapon or form of attack that they have Martial Proficiency (can make techniques greater than rank 14) with. All techniques using this weapon or form of attack are always treated as being four ranks higher for purposes of calculating their technique rank benchmark, though their actual rank is not changed. This benefit ceases to apply for techniques higher than rank 28.

| Description: There is no word in the Vas'Koi language for 'block' or 'parry'. Summer Exalt has learned of the word, and has taken it to mean 'run into an attack with purpose'. Summer Exalt walks into a blow like a man, somewhat lessening the damage. Naturally, this is really only "effective" against perfectly blunt strikes.
