One of the biggest aesthetic appeals of One Piece is the aspect of exploration. This is something that is woven subtly throughout the narrative and something that the series would be completely different without. It is due to this that it is unsurprising that the residents of this site take to the call of exploration and jettison off into the unknown, excited to take on bigger and better things. It is due to this theme and perhaps man's own will to develop as quickly as they can that crews generally visit two to three islands before rushing off into the Grand Line and the site is even geared to reward such behavior, but I'd like to ask something at what point do we take the exploration inward? At what point will we stop to make our characters truly human, truly novel and explore who they are as individuals and how their stories tie into the narrative of the world around them? When do they make an impact that is more than an explosion, some fight with some big name or a liberation of some group that is quickly overlooked by the next person to visit the island? When will we really consider what it is to explore? I'd like to pose a challenge to anyone who is willing to take it; write 5 SLs, 5 Sls on 1 island or at least in 1 Blue and really try to get a handle on and develop your character as an individual. Use FORM and showcase their families, their occupations, what they really enjoy as individuals or do for recreation, and any ventures they use to make money or truly capitalize on their environment. See if you can get the same joy from these narratives that you would from a large scale explosion piece, see if you can develop some interesting characters that you think will help bring life into the islands you choose to rp on, and if you do post a link to your SL, any notable NPCs you may have made and maybe a little summary of what you've contributed to the island both OOCly and ICly. Have fun exploring and see you in the New World. Edited by Clarity, Mar 30 2015, 03:41 AM.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that a good, well-developed character is vital to any good bit of fiction. Doesn't matter whether its a book, TV series, movie or video game, I can't rank anything as excellent without it also having developed characters. Attack on Titan is a great example of a show that I felt missed out on a possible perfect score because - although I do adore the setting, design, plot, etc. - I just can't really get behind any of the three main characters enough. There's so much focus on the action and angry screeching that we never really get to see every aspect of the protagonist's personalities. As such, this is something I usually try to do in all my SLs; weave in a bit of introspective review, while balancing it with the more flashy shonen goodness. Its not always easy, because sometimes explosions just have to take precedent to make an SL work. My first and main character here, Eve, was originally just going to be my attempt at making a cool shonen hero who beat up the bad guys and shouted a lot. It was when I noticed that Goro had become available that I really started to cook up and expand on ideas that had already been tentatively forming and put into play. Specifically, I wanted to (and still want) to explore my character's relationship with their own power. Its the goals of many typical shonen characters to what to get stronger and become the most powerful, but they always seem to treat their ability to blow up mountain ranges so casually. My plans then is to have Eve struggle to come to terms with her new, supposedly "invincible" power and all the responsibility that it'll burden her with. Once upon a time she wrestled with feelings of inadequacy and now she has one of the most powerful DFs in existence. Its a big jump for someone to make, and its something I hope I have the talent to give justice to. Of course at the moment I'm tied up in a ME, but I'd be very tempted to take on this challenge once its done. Great suggestion Clarity XD |

@ Bright, that is wonderful to read and an opinion I strongly agree with, though it may not be something I always deliver on. I've decided to take a serious effort to do this with all of my characters, my newest character Tetsuo has just recently gotten the pera pera and he will be dealing with his new abilities, something I want him to truly struggle with, because when most people come across something that contradicts their view of reality they do their best to rationalize it or ignore it, and in early SLs I really want to showcase that and make it have a strong impact on the character. @Blockhead, I am glad to see you've accepted it, let me know what island (s) you've chosen and I will make an effort to rp with you or at least invade from time to time. If you're stumped I have plenty of suggestions and would love to offer my opinion if it wanted. Edited by Clarity, Mar 30 2015, 06:25 AM.
