Allen Wu Modern Chinese History Since 1840 Professor Chang Liu 3. Discuss the significance of the year 1905 in modern China. Most people consider 1911 to be the first important year in China’s 20th-century history, due to the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the last emperor and ushered in Sun Yat-sen’s new government. However, the decade prior to the emperor’s ousting saw several developments that influenced not only the empire’s decline but also the shape of East Asia's political landscape in the next few decades. Actually, nothing of note happened within China in 1905, but just north of its borders, the fierce Russo-Japanese war waged into its second year. Both nations sought to control the Manchuria region, and though Japan offered to concede the territory if Russia would recognize Korea as residing within Japan’s sphere of influence, Russia refused and negotiations broke down. In early 1904, the Japanese navy attacked a Russian fleet at Port Arthur, and the clash quickly lead to full-out war. At the time, Japan was a relatively unknown player on the international stage and most western nations assumed that Russia would easily win the war. However, Japan shocked the world by routing Russia in several decisive battles from 1904 to 1905 when American President Theodore Roosevelt mediated the signing of the Treaty of Portmouth between the two countries. In accordance with the treaty, both Russia and Japan agreed to evacuate Manchuria, but whereas Russia was forced out almost entirely, Japan retained considerable influence in the area. Russia’s Tsar Nicholas II suffered a massive loss in popularity as a result of the war. The relative unimportance of the Manchuria region and Russia’s failing economy caused the Russian people to dislike the war from the beginning, but Russia’s humiliating defeats and the Tsar’s decisions to remain in the war for the sake of avoiding a “humiliating peace” further damaged his reputation. Civil unrest increased considerably as a result of the Russo-Japanese war and although the Russian Revolution of 1905 was suppressed, the people’s unhappiness contributed toward the more successful revolution in 1917. Russian presence in Manchuria would never fully recover. Meanwhile, Japan’s definitive victory awarded it new respect as a serious contender in East Asia and strengthened its foothold in Manchuria. Internally, the Japanese population experienced a wave of nationalism as a result of proving their strength, but also resentment at Western powers because they were unsatisfied with the terms of the treaty. In particular, Roosevelt supported Russia’s refusal to pay reparations, creating tension between Japan and America. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria following the Mukden Incident, and this moment was pivotal to many key events that would happen both in China and internationally. It is likely that this invasion would not have happened had Russia been victorious in the 1905 war, or at the very least the circumstances would have been greatly different. A stronger Russian presence in Manchuria might have prevented the occupation of Manchuria and subsequent invasion of China proper. In turn, a lessened Japanese pressure could have dramatically the political power struggle that raged through China for the first half of the century. Edited by Titan, May 22 2014, 07:05 PM.
