Redwood couldn't help but smirk a bit as Nessus warned him of all the magic he would be using. He did of course completely believe that there was something supernatural to the doctor's healing powers, but the term magic did seem a little childish considering the serious circumstances. As he laid himself down on the makeshift operating table, he couldn't help but wince as Nessus snapped off the tip of his horn. Sure, it could grow back, but it must have hurt. Or did it? He made a mental note to remember asking after his surgery.

"Alright, thanks." He said as he took the medicine from Nessus. He was, without a doubt, a tough guy who could (barely) withstand having his wound re-opened and his insides poked around in, but he would happily forego all that pain if he could, so positioned the rim of the vial against his lips.

Suddenly an old piece of advice repeated itself in Redwood's head. "Don't take medicine from doctors you don't trust." If one lived on Osula, it was pretty sound advice; more often than not it seemed, shady, unscrupulous doctors would hide contraband inside their patients, or the pills the prescribed would actually do more harm than good, thus ensuring repeat business. Redwood had been lucky enough that he had a personal, trustworthy doctor in his old gang, but others he knew had not been so fortunate. It may have all been rumors, but most rumors had some amount of truth to them, and Redwood had taken that advice to heart. He peered up at Nessus and studied him for a moment. Did he trust this unicorn? After only a few seconds, he smiled and shrugged to himself. He could trust Nessus. Without letting Nessus in on what was going through his mind, he began to tip the vial back.

He had been told that the medicine would taste 'agreeable', but Redwood had never had decent tasting medicine and assumed that 'agreeable' meant 'not-vile', so he poured the drink back down his throat as if he was taking a shot of liquor. But to his surprise, the liquid that passed over his tongue tasted pleasant, sugary even. He smacked his lips a few times, regretting that he didn't savor the flavor and looked up at Nessus, impressed, "Hey, this actually isn..."

"'t bad." Redwood said, finally finishing his sentence nearly an hour later, though to him it had all happened in the blink of an eye. However, Nessus was no longer there to hear the praise, and it didn't take long for him to realize that he had already been operated on. He chuckled to himself, shaking his head. He could never get over how sudden anesthesia was, though he was surprised that he as functional as he had been before he drank the medicine; usually he was groggy for at least ten or so minutes afterwards. He swung his legs off the table and was again impressed by his post-surgery strength. He stood up and found that he could stand and walk just fine, and was, once more, impressed. Confident that he could continue to walk fine, he went off to find Nessus. He had a question he wanted to ask him, and it wasn't about the horn. He had, unfortunately, completely forgotten about the horn.

"There you are, Doc. Thanks for getting that bullet out, and I have to say I feel just as good as I felt before I got shot even. Though, I expected you to be patching everyone up, not sitting here by yourself." Redwood said as he approached, and then took a seat diagonal to Nessus's, "Heh, sorry, that probably sounded a bit rude. I don't mean to tell you to get back to work or anything like that. You've done a lot today already, and actually, I'm glad you're not busy because there's something I want to ask you."

He paused and took a breath, fixating on the table for a moment in concentration. He didn't really like to have to convince people so he wanted to make his initial delivery good. After a short few second, he looked back up at Nessus. "You know, I think we both did pretty good work here today for these people. They're pretty lucky that both of us just so happened to come along at the same time, right? I mean, I don't know a thing about fixing up people and I imagine you don't know much about building homes, though I could be wrong. Anyways, storms and tidal waves, and not to mention pirates ruin lives all over the globe, and people need help getting back on their feet, or even surviving."

"Like I said earlier, I'm the kind of fox who's sailing around the world just for the sake of sightseeing, so I can't say I've got much of a purpose as it is, but after today I started thinking that it'd be swell to go around and help people out where I can. Thing is, I can only do so much by building houses, so I was wondering, if you don't have any other pressing matters," Redwood paused and took another breath. Everything he had said had lead up to this one question, and he really did hope that Nessus would agree, for the sake of all the unfortunate people out there, "Would you want to become partners with me? We'd sail the world together helping out those in need, making the world a better place and all that. Whaddya say, Doc?"

He smiled and looked Nessus in the eyes and hoped he looked as serious and trustworthy as possible, and extended a hand to the doctor. Would he shake it? Would he slap it away? Redwood really had no idea.

Redwood poked his head out of the back room just at the time Nessus had expected him to, nearly down to the second. He found the doctor and made his way over just as expected, as well. When the carpenter opened his mouth to begin talking, it was similarly anticipated and on-schedule.

"I would have seen to their injuries tonight, were they grave as yours," Nessus calmly replied.

"I performed triage on the way back from the beach. The two who were wounded by friendly fire both sustained only flesh wounds. They do not have any projectile or fragments remaining in their tissue. The one you fought and the captain have the worst injuries of the bunch."

Calmly sipping a glass of water, Nessus stared just past Redwood. His lips tightened into what might have been a smile.

"As a doctor, I am obligated to heal all of them, even if they meant me harm. As a man, however, I am under no obligation to make them comfortable. Their wounds can wait until they've awoken."

Even as he said them, Nessus thought that his words sounded a touch vindictive. This would largely owe, he imagined, to the fact that it was in fact vindication that drove them. It may be his burden to bear that he should heal every living beast that came to him in want of treatment; this was his Way of the Unicorn. Still, he was only (occasionally) human. The doctor didn't care if Redwood judged him for it. He felt right about it, and second guessing himself over the few things he could be certain of was exactly what they wanted him to do.

Nothing else Redwood said stood out too much. While Nessus wasn't trying to ignore him, his hindbrain still had much to sort out from the past day's events. It wasn't until he invited the unicorn to join him on a journey of salvation across the seas that the carpenter jumped back into the foreground. The doctor rubbed a finger to his chin to keep his jaw from dropping, managing to look thoughtful rather than dumbstruck over the proposition.

This is how it all begins! thought Nessus, his instincts assembling the words and rushing them down the line before any conscious thoughts could weigh in on the matter. Suddenly, the lack of betrayal over the night's events made sense in context. This was a classic long-con strategy: you would hang somebody out to dry, and then be the one to rescue them from it. Afterwards, they'd trust you implicitly, and the things you could get away with increased by an order of magnitude.

In essence, what Redwood had offered Nessus was nothing short of a confession of his sinister intent. If the two parted ways now, the doctor figured the carpenter was figuring, then all of his work in building his trust would be for naught. Getting his goat would mean keeping him around until such a time as a goat might be gotten.

When the doctor's racing, paranoid nerves began to settle, a more rational thought came to mind. The two of them had done a lot of good together in just one day, hadn't they? When they'd arrived, the town had been nothing but a soggy pile of ruined homes peopled with the injured and unwell. Tonight, they were healthy enough to sing in a tavern that was probably better than the one they'd have before, safe from a pirate threat that would have laid them low if not for their own intervention. The tight, joyless smile softened a bit into a contented smug grin.

"I'll join you," said Nessus. He reached out to take Redwood's hand and gave a single, firm, professional shake, grip neither tight nor limp. It was decidedly the handshake of a physician.

"My work should be concluded by tomorrow afternoon," he continued after a pause. "The islanders are largely healed, and require only a cursory follow-up examination. As mentioned, the pirates will not require much care, and the marines will take up whatever long-term treatment that may be needed. Afterwards, I will assist you in whatever capacity I may in your endeavors. I am no carpenter by craft, but I assure you that I can be trusted to clear debris and carry lumber."

Nessus lifted his glass of water and, laughing at himself internally for indulging in the gesture, held it in salute. It didn't make sense, and he was certain that it was proof positive of the madness breaching his first line of defenses. Agreeing to travel with a man whom would only eventually betray him was surely insane, no matter how much good they might do the world. From now on, his own sensibilities chided him, he would surely be courting disaster more and more.

"Well then, it's settled."

Redwood's smile grew as he and the doctor released hands. He would look satisfied, cool and collected to Nessus and anyone else watching, but in his mind he was letting out a long, dramatic, relieved sigh. He didn't go into the negotiations thinking he would fail to convince Nessus, but at the same time he had felt that the doctor would put up some sort of fight. The fact that Nessus hadn't resisted only made Redwood think that he was excited about the partnership, and that thought would keep a smile on his face for a while.

"Well, I'm not in any rush to get going just yet. I've still got buildings to repair just like you've got patients to treat." He said as he leaned back in his chair, one arm slung over the back of it in a very relaxed pose, "And unless you happen to have a decently sized ship, we're not going anywhere until I get one built. Could just use the ship those geezers came in on I guess, but as a carpenter I'd be a bit ashamed if I used a ship I didn't make. That'll probably take a week or so, closer to two really, if I want it to look nice -- and I do."

Just as Redwood was imagining blueprints in his head, thinking about how much lumber he might need and what not, a familiar purple visage bounced into his peripheral vision. Rolling his head towards the figure, he saw that it was, as he could have easily guessed, the mayor. He was looking as bouncy and happy as ever and maybe a little bit intoxicated.

"Did I overhear, Mr. Redwood, that you need to build a ship?' He asked, his lips pursed together and his fingers dancing together in front of him, as if he was holding in some big, happy secret.

"You heard right, Mr. Mayor. The Doc and I are going to go on a bit of a journey together." Redwood replied casually, though he couldn't help but wonder what had the mayor so excited at the moment.

"Wonderful! Well then, I think I've finally decided how we are going to repay you!" The mayors smile nearly extended off his face as he turned around and addressed the crows, pirates excluded, "Attention, everyone! Attention! Quiet down for just a moment!"

Within a few seconds, the townsfolk had hushed themselves into silence and all attention was given to the mayor. "Mr. Redwood and Doctor Ausfaller, who you all know very well by now I'm sure, are going on a journey together shortly. However, before they can depart, Mr. Redwood has informed me that they will need a ship! I also overheard him say that it will take up to two weeks for him to finish. So how about, tomorrow morning, we all roll up our sleeves and build them the best boat in all of North Blue, and get it done in just a few days?!"

To be completely honest, there were a few in the crowd who frowned a bit and one could tell that they were plotting as to how they might be able to get out of ship-building duty, but the majority of the crowd erupted with loud, affirmative cheering (much to the dismay of the old-timers trying to enjoy their dinner). Turning his back to the whistling and cheering crowd, the mayor looked up to Redwood with a nervous schoolgirl's smile, as if he had just confessed his love to Redwood and was waiting for a reply, "So, Mr. Redwood, you will take our help won't you? It is the least we can do for you after all you and Doctor Ausfaller have done!"

"Well…making a ship isn't easy, Mayor." Redwood smirked as the Mayor's paled a bit. Maybe it was his criminal past, maybe it was the fox inside him, but he couldn't help but be a bit deceitful. The resulting wobbling lips of the mayor were just a bit too much for him to handle though, and he quickly gave up on the prank. With a sigh and a grin, he made things right. "But don't worry. I'm sure you're all up for it, and I'll take as much help as I can get."

And there was much rejoicing.
