Tsubaki blinked her eyes, adjusting to the brightness of the outdoors. She had been sitting in the dimly-lit bar for so long she forgot that she was, in fact, awake during the daytime. Although she could admit the sun felt nice for basking in, that was about all the daylight hours had to offer in her opinion. The night was much better. There was no blindingly bright sun, it was generally cooler outside, and things looked a lot more interesting to Tsubaki when they were in the cover of darkness.

"Damien Loud..." Tsubaki repeated, enunciating his last name slowly, finding the coincidence between his surname and his personality so big she couldn't help but react. Trying to cover up her reaction, she spoke again. "I am Tsubaki. I come from Amazon Lily. We have no men there," She said simply.

Then again, many people seemed to already know about her home, and it's lack of both genders. More than once had she heard a whisper about her as she passed by strangers. Although she had yet to introduce herself as a woman from Amazon Lily to anyone, some people were more observant than others, and guessed. Her tribal clothes, out of place in most of the islands she had visited so far, were a big hint that she came from a different sort of land than the everyday traveler.

Tsubaki's thoughts suddenly snapped back to Damien's introduction. Speaking of homes..."I thought all fishmen were supposed to come from Fishman Island," She said, bluntly.

So, Tsubaki’s the name, and from Amazon Lily no less-” Damien replied, recalling the whisperings and rumors on an island populated entirely by women, an old sailor’s tale by all accounts he had known until this point. “-I always thought the island of women was just a legend, though up by some love-starved old sailors, but I suppose you’re living proof…” He continued, a bit impressed, until her next question threw him a curve ball.

Heh, well, I’m not exactly the purest fishman out there, more the result of a crazy night. So, I grew up with my quite human mother on the island of salt. Heh, I guess we do have something in common-” he snorted. “I guess you don’t know your dad either. Hell, we could be related! Whooo, Woooooooo!” the wrestler laughed, slapping at his leg, before stopping with a sigh and looking around.

The town was extremely rustic, to the point that it looked as if it was out of a history book, and eerily devoid of any visible life, like a real ghost town. “Damn, this place just feels off. Here I am, expecting some damn life, but nothing except some crummy fuckin dive bar with a cute tired gal that plays hard to get and tries to kill ya.

Huh-” he paused, “If you’re from the island of women, that means you’re from the Grand Line too, and pretty far from home. Ya don’t mind me askin, what brings you to this damned hellhole?” He asked, in an equally blunt manner.

Every time this male spoke, he managed to get a reaction out of her. When he mentioned the possibility of being siblings, Tsubaki's mouth popped open in surprise. Luckily, Damien found himself funny, and proceeded to laugh and then look away from her, allowing her enough time to recover from his words. Although the opposite gender had taken a role in conceiving her, Tsubaki had never taken the time to consider what kind of man her father might be. Her mother had never mentioned him, as was common on Amazon Lily, and she grew up in a society of women who played all of the parental roles. Still, she could only hope that the man who managed to capture the romantic interest of a Kuja tribeswoman was not a womanizing fishman.

Tsubaki tuned back in just as Damien asked her a question. "Leaving out the fact that they tried to get you to drink acid, I'm sure there's worse islands in this sea than this place," she mused in response to his 'hellhole' comment. "I am far from my home island, though. I left Amazon Lily three years ago, on a Kuja pirate ship. At first, I thought I would simply visit a few islands, and return to my home. However, I've found that I like to explore more than I thought I did," Tsubaki said, grinning, "So I convince pirate crews to take me to new islands whenever I get bored of the one I'm on."

She paused to examine him. "It is more surprising that you are here. It seems the Grand Line would better suit your...interests." Between his flirting with the barmaid, and his constant search for a wrestling match, his rambunctious behavior was hardly what Tsubaki would call 'interests' but then again, he was a male. Maybe that's all they did all day. It certainly seemed like it, from all of the bar scenes she had witnessed so far in her travels.

So, you get around by hitching rides with pirates? I don’t doubt that you can handle yourself, but men can be damned pigs if you ask me-” Damien said, oblivious to the possibility that he was one of the pigs in question. “-Eh, whatever works works, I suppose.

You’d think that, wouldn’t ya?" He replied, in regards to why he was in one of the blue seas as opposed to the Grand Line. “[color#00C5CDBut really, even though the Grand Line is the strongest sea, it ain’t exactly the vastest, you get what I’m sayin’? If I’m gonna have people believing I’m the best, I might as well see what’s goin’ on in places like these. Plus, it don’t hurt to rack up all the fans I can in person, give’em a little something something to fawn over, yeah?[/color]"

The Wrestler grinned- “But I guess you could say we’re both here for the same reason.

Folding his arms, he paused briefly- “Actually, I just got here, have you been here much longer? Found anything interesting about this place besides the devil may care assassination attempts and Kung-fu grandpa’s?

"The same reason, huh," Tsubaki reiterated Damien's words, with heavy emphasis on the word 'same'. Although they might both be here looking for their own little adventures, she doubted she was also going to end up carousing the night with a female in tow. She was almost glad she had met him during the daytime. If she had seen him at night, when the bar was filled with more with scantily clad women, and less quiet, working men on break, she might have been disinclined to help him. She could already picture the half-fishman with any number of the easy women who roamed the bar during the evening hours.

"I have been here a week. Today, we probably both managed to discover the only interesting thing about this sneaky island. I came here on a pirate ship, and never saw them for the rest of the time I've been in the village. At first I thought that they must have just left, but I have seen that the dock near the village always has some shady characters around, and now I'm assuming that they were set upon by the same kind of people we just met in the bar," She mused. "It looks like it will not be easy for me to leave the same way I usually do."

Heh, so, you can’t leave because you have no boat or anyone to hitch a ride with. Typical-” He said, with a hint of contempt in his voice. “-Typical for a human to get stuck where a fishman would never get trapped. Always all high and mighty, with nothing to back it up. No webbed hands to swim, no gills to breathe underwater, just weak little nubby fingers, and fragile lungs…” He spit, furrowing his brow.

…Nah, I’m just playin’, I had you for a minute there, didn’t I? Wooohoo, woooo~” he chuckled. “That’s really how the old-timers talk, ya know? Pretty fucked up shit if you ask me. That said…

He paused for a moment, giving some brief consideration to leaving the place on the spot, seeing as he really had no reason to stay. Falsely peaceful town, full of people trying to kill him for no apparent reason? Not exactly the wrestler’s cup of tea. Still, he felt a bit of an obligation to help Tsubaki out, seeing as she had helped him out back when he was in a pinch.

If you want to get out of here, I can give you a hand. If this place is such a snooze-fest that they have to kill visitors just to keep things interesting, there really can’t be too much goin’ on, yeah?

Again, he paused, trying to figure out what he could actually do in this circumstance. “Well, I can’t guarantee that I can get you all the way out there, but I have a boat off the shore, a bit more than a mile out, only problem is that it has a bit of a leak, but it should still be caught up on the rock it got stuck on. I can help you most of the way, but I can’t exactly carry you all the way there, how strong a swimmer are ya, yo?

Tsubaki arched an eyebrow as Damien insulted humans, and then informed her that there were actually fishmen out there who believed such a thing. Not that she was going to argue over who was better. Damien was her first up-close and personal experience with a fishman species, and he was only a half-breed. Although the old man hadn't attacked her, therefore she didn't know how strong he had been, she could probably assume Damien was a more than capable fighter. And even if he wasn't stronger, it wasn't like Tsubaki to hold a grudge against anyone just for being different. The Kuja only judged because of gender. Had he tried to make an argument about being male, instead, he might have gotten a stronger reaction out of her.

She continued to listen as he offered to help her. His question on her swimming abilities made her forehead dampen in a sudden breakout of nervous sweat, effectively garnering a bigger reaction from her than he had before, and this time she didn't think he was trying to fool her.

Jaguars were big cats known for being around water. This particularly jaguar, however, was not going anywhere near a large body of liquid unless you tied her up and threw her. She opened her mouth to tell him so, but suddenly paused before she spoke. She was talking to someone she had just met, and had been awfully friendly in giving away her plans. Although he was offering to help her, he was still a male. Trusting did not come so easily to her when dealing with the opposite gender. She wasn't totally sure what he would do if he found out she was a devil fruit user.

Her fists clenched at her sides, and she settled for a general answer, hoping he'd be satisfied with just a generic denial of any aquatic abilities. He had said he couldn't carry her all the way, after all. "Can't swim," She said laconically.

The Amazon’s brief, blunt, and rather dry response was the perfect storm to actually stop the wrestler in his tracks for a short while, leaving him only able to stare at her, dumbfounded at the very thought of what she said. “So, you mean to tell me, that you, a pirate, someone who by definition lives their life at sea, doesn’t know how to swim?” He asked, for the first time in a long time talking in a genuinely serious matter. “Woo, Woo? Nah, I can’t laugh at that, that ain’t even funny, yo.

It took a lot for Damien to actually take anything seriously, but he refused to believe that anyone couldn’t swim, especially given that he was practically at home when he was in the water.

Seriously, how bad can you be at swimming, girlie? All I need is for you to hold on, kick a bit sometimes, maybe tread water for a minute or two if I need to catch my breath, I refuse to believe that you can’t at least do that.”

She fidgeted. There wasn't a whole lot of things in the world that made Tsubaki nervous, but as Damien continued to speak, he forced an image into her mind, of her being in the water. She didn't like that image at all.

"Pirates live at sea on boats," She argued fiercely, "above the water." As she talked, she pictured such a boat, and was temporarily comforted. But then his words invaded to the fore of her mind again, and she remained unsettled. Tread water, he says... She thought to herself morosely, picturing the horrible hypothetical situation yet again.

He wasn't taking her generic answer like the wanted him to. Maybe if I give him my thanks! She thought. Tsubaki hardly ever thanked males for anything. She was certain that everything they did was nothing she couldn't accomplish herself, therefore they didn't really deserve her gratitude. Damien was offering to help her. People usually showed gratitude for that. "Thank you for trying to help anyway," she said, aiming to make herself sound sweet. She didn't know if she was successful or not. Not confident her ruse would pull through, she threw in another line.

"I sink like a rock. No abilities in the water whatsoever,"
She informed him, figuring it was okay to tell him that much. People who couldn't swim from normal circumstances said that sometimes, right? She swore she had heard a pirate tell his friend such a thing once. That line alone probably wouldn't give away her devil fruit weakness.

Oddly enough, the girl seemed rigid and a bit nervous at his insistence that she could try, but something that she said made him remember something he had seem back home.

Hmm, Like a rock you say…” Damien thought out loud. “Heh- that takes me back to this guy, another wrestler that I met back on Salt Island, called himself the ‘Death Chicken.’ Craziest backstory I’d ever heard for a fighter, said he ate some demonic fruit, and was imbued with ‘the fighting tenacity of a thousand fighting cocks,’ Woohooo, wooo-” he laughed, thinking back to the old days.

His whole gimmick was that he turned into a half man-half rooster, or so he said. Crazy fucker had the most detailed costume I’d ever seen, so realistic that it was downright cheesy…” he continued. “But the guy couldn’t swim, when he went into the water- bam, sank like a sack a’bricks, couldn’t so much as struggle… Poor bastard drowned to death out in the shallows one day. Damn shame really, if I was there he would still be alive… No point in beating myself up about that, nothing I can do to change it.

Damien grinned- “Maybe that’s what happened to you, ate a piece of spoiled fruit, and can’t swim no more-” he snorted, joking around, trying his best to see if he could make her less nervous, or rigid, or distant… or anything really. He wasn’t used to talking with people like Tsubaki, and it felt as if anything he got out of her was forced.

Still, it wasn’t in his nature to give up, but rather the exact opposite, so he’d try again to see if he could come up with something- “So, what you need is a ship? Any idea where one might be, I’ll see if I can’t front some of the cost…

Tsubaki glared at Damien in angry disbelief. She wasn't even sure who she was mad at...herself, for saying something so obvious that it gave away her secret, or him for not acting like the typical male she envisioned in her mind. The type of male who wasn't smart enough to piece such things together.

When the Kuja pirates had dropped her off on her first island years ago, they had warned her not to take men lightly. With all the time that had passed, their warning had dropped to the very back of her mind. Now the voice memory of the Amazon who had warned her repeated itself loud and clear.

Tsubaki realized she was still gaping at the half-fishmale, and finally closed her mouth, which had parted as her jaw had dropped a little in shock. She narrowed her eyes at him, thinking. But before she could fully decide whether to tell him of her devil fruit powers or not, he immediately moved on from the topic of his anecdote, back to Tsubaki's travel troubles.

She blinked. She hadn't expected him to manage to hit the nail on the head, and then metaphorically stay his hammer. That was it? He was just going to talk about a grown man dying in shallow water from some piece of 'rotten' fruit and move on? Internally, Tsubaki shrugged. If he was going to skim over the topic without forcing her hand, she wasn't going to show her own cards.

She cleared her throat. "I...Yes, a ship. I need a ship. I haven't really..." his last words finally caught up to her brain. Front the cost? Pay for her? It almost sounded as if he was implying that she couldn't afford such a thing herself. Like there was something a male could do that Tsubaki couldn't. Swimming was one thing, due to her devil fruit, but in her mind, that was probably the only thing.

She couldn't help the feral, animalistic noise that sounded low in the back of her throat. Her first instinct was to direct the growl at Damien."I will pay for myself," She snapped. Once she managed to let out her natural reaction, her instincts quieted and the more intellectual side of her took charge again. This side immediately reminded Tsubaki that Damien had been trying to assist her.

Deciding that this time her instincts hadn't been right, she felt she needed to speak again. But what to say next? She couldn't apologize to a male...or ask for his help... "Do you know about ships?" She asked, finally, almost tiredly. Talking to males and keeping secrets was chalking up to be awfully stressful.

Well, in terms of making her feel less uneasy, Damien’s little story was a complete failure. Not only did she not seem to find it interesting, it only appeared to put her more on edge, her jaw practically hitting the floor at one point. His shift in subjects also seemed to throw her off, but it initially seemed to take her mind off of the whole swimming debacle. However, she took a bit of offense to his offer to help pay for the ship, and he in turn took offense to her offense.

Dayum, I could do without the snark, eh? Seein’ as you helped me out before, I would say my offer was a bit too little, I mean, if you’re gonna be the one who finds it and all that junk.

She seemed to feel a bit bad about snapping, and asked if he knew anything about ships, in an exhausted manner. She probably didn’t have much experience dealing with people like Damien, just like Damien had little experience in dealing with people like her. As hard as it was for him to try to actually get a positive response from her, it was probably a lot harder for her to keep up.

It was forcing Damien to act much differently than he would in any other situation, more patiently and calm than anything else. Unfortunately for her, even toned down, he was still pretty out there.

Can’t say I know too much about ships, never really needed them too much, ya know? As long as it floats with ya in it, it’s good, right?” He shrugged, rubbing his head. Boats were for resting or going long distances really, unless it was more than one person, so the wrestler normally swam where he needed to go.

So, you know a place or not? If you don’t want me to help ya pay for it, there ain’t much reason for me to tag along, maybe tired girl needs some company…

Tsubaki sensed that the half-fishmale was preparing to go his own, separate way, and she hesitated, like a child who realized her toys would be taken away if she continued to be stubborn. Sure, dealing with Damien was a bit tiring because he was a male, a gender she didn't typically go out of her way to associate with, but at least she was preoccupied. Before he had arrived, she had been borderline-mopey.

"The docks that I arrived in must have boats," She began. "If they capture the pirates that arrive on the island, then maybe there are old, unused pirate ships."

She paused to think of a reason to keep him from going after the barmaid he had dubbed 'tired girl'...besides the obvious fact that the girl would probably attempt to kill him if he continued to pursue her.

"You can...negotiate," She continued. At this point she was just making things up as she went along, "So I don't have to talk to males." It had been a long time since Tsubaki had lied, and she was quickly remembering that it didn't come naturally to her, each word being spoken very slowly as she actively fabricated a purpose for him to go to the docks with her.

It wasn't all that false, there was a good chance the person at the docks she would be dealing with for a ship or passage on one would be a man. Tsubaki didn't like dealing with males, but it wasn't like she couldn't talk to them. She had seen some females who had such troubles, too shy to associate with men. She could only hope that Damien didn't mistake her unwillingness to talk to males as shyness.

In hindsight, maybe it was a good idea for her to find one male she could bear to associate with, so she could use him as a medium to communicate with all of the others of his gender on her behalf. She liked the thought of that.

Eh?” Damien blurted, turning back around as Tsubaki gave her slow answer, asking him to come help negotiate. He didn’t suspect her to let him go so easily, but her stammering, on the fly response made him snort. As a wrestler, most of what he did was acting, and as a result, he was fairly quick to spot a lie, or rather a poorly executed ad-lib. Still, it wasn’t as if he had really intended to leave her, given that he found her interesting enough to stay around, and not in the way he would normally be interested about a pretty little thing like herself.

Well, ya seem to be talkin to me just fine, I’d say that’s pretty solid progress-” he sneered, crossing his arms. At this point, he was playing along, but trying to mess with the Amazonian at the same time.

-Guess’n that it would be insulting to offer assistance in terms of muscle, but I’d think ya can handle negotiations yer’self, with me standing by as… emotional support? Woooha, Woohooo~” he cackled, tilting his head back as he laughed, clearly having a bit too much fun with his new role.

Wait a second-” he paused, discovering a new angle. “If yer a pirate, why’da ya need to negotiate at all? Just steal that shit! Hell, there ain’t no marines here, no law at all from what I can tell. Plus, if yer just stealin from pirates that got offed by the crazy fuckin villagers in this place, it’s a victimless crime, eh?” he questioned, satisfied with the development of the new role he was playing.

Tsubaki's eyes flared and then narrowed on Damien. Emotional support. No one had given her emotional support since...well, she couldn't remember. When she was a child, anytime she went crying to only parent, her mother simply sniffed and told her to get stronger and deal with her problems. Eventually Tsubaki stopped running and crying, and started gritting her teeth and bearing whatever issues arose.

Now that Damien had said she could handle the negotiations herself, she didn't feel like arguing. What else was there to say? That she couldn't handle it, and she needed his help? Although it had been a ruse to throw him off the devil fruit talk earlier, she had thanked him. She wasn't going to try to top that.

He spoke again, this time with a crazy plan of thievery. She thought about it for a moment after he finished speaking. "Stealing is a pain," She mused. "by myself, at least, which is why I have not done it before. Usually the ships I see are too big for me to sail on my own. So, pretending to like a male to get passage is easier," She explained.

"There may not be Marines," Tsubaki continued, "but I am sure the villagers will try to kill us if they catch on to us. I do not think they like you, especially. " She spoke her last words in a dry tone.
