Character Template [-----] Account Name: Diaketh Basic Character Information Name: Aethan Lawkey Nickname: Liesmith Age: 28 Gender: Male Race: Human Affiliation: Bounty hunter Threat: 0 Achievements: Profession: Thief The Thief is a job closely related to the assassin. They both provide stealth capabilities, though a Thief gains lockpicking skills instead of poison knowledge, can generally know their way around the ways of barter and trade, and pickpocketing. Thieves don't have it hard to find 'underground info' in most cities, either. Thieves will gain an extra 10% in Beli rewards in all Storylines they complete (for themselves). They also have access to stealth techniques. Advocate Lawyers are fairly charismatic people who are skilled in both bargaining and evaluating legal dilemmas, whether they are related to commercial or criminal law. Their expertise means that they are very knowledgeable of the legal system as well as having a reasonable understanding of commerce and most forms of merchandise. Additionally, they tend to be well-connected in trading circles and the judiciary. Weapon Specialist A much more general fighter-type profession, a Weapon Specialist is someone who has to a large or small degree devoted his/her life to the mastery of a single weapon or weapon type, such as Swords, Axes or Whips. This profession applies generally to melee weapons. Martial Artist A Martial Artist is someone who specializes in hand-to-hand combat, completely or very close to unarmed. They usually have good insight in the aspects of weight, balance and movement of the body. Position: Legal counsel Physical Appearance Height: 183 cm. Weight: 79 kg. Hair: Slightly disheveled auburn hair parted to the side that reaches just beneath his ears. Eyes: Gray. Clothing/Accessories: If you are going to do business with people you need to look the part. Aethan prefers to wear a high quality suit made of dark grey cotton, a white shirt, polished black boots and dark green suspenders. Aethan's preferences notwithstanding his normal attire could only be considered to have been a suit of high quality at some point long ago. To be completely honest it’s not actually all dark grey anymore either due to the increasingly atrocious patch work that has been done to fix the tears in the fabric. Ok, fine, so at this point it’s really just a suit that is riddled with bad sowing and an even worse attempt at using any fabric to make patches. The overall impression is quite frankly that of a very ambitious hobo, a hobo who might have a monacle and a top hat but a hobo nevertheless. Under the suit he does however wear a white shirt that is so flawless and pristine in its appearance that it only makes the suit look even worse by comparison, like a glowing jewel in a pile of horse manure. The boots are also still somewhat shiny though, so that’s also a plus. Over the suit he wears a beige trench coat that has also seen better days, but pickers can’t be choosers right? He is normally seen carrying a satchel filled with some standard form contracts, some maps, a couple of blank pages as well as ink and a fountain-pen. His short sword is carried in a sheath attached to the small of his back, hidden in plain sight. General Appearance: Aethan would by many accounts be quite a forgettable figure in many crowds. He is a young man of a somewhat average height, average build and average features. His countenance is neither atrociously ugly nor ruggedly handsome, his high cheekbones framed by a pair friendly gray eyes and underscored by a friendly if puzzled smile further accentuated by a perpetual stubble. He carries himself with the body language that is not that of a warrior, a fiend nor a hero, but rather that of a man who might seem terribly out of place on a battlefield but completely at home at a desk of some sort. Despite this he does not appear meek or weak, he simply appears to be a man that is... average by all accounts. If one were to take a closer look at the polite smile and the puzzled expression on his face one could possibly note a keen intelligence in his eyes and a suspicion could justly be formed that these are the eyes of a man who is fully aware of everything that is going around in the room, a man who is generally entertained by what he's and he is just patiently waiting for what happens next. If you were to see him in his element, which is bullshitting, some people might think that they might have seen a different man entirely. His hair slicked back, his body emanating confidence and vigor as he gestures emphatically to prove his point. Aethan long ago realized the power of appearances and as such uses his own body language as a tool to project whatever image he has in mind. Spoiler: click to toggle The Character Personality: As far as first impressions go most people would describe Aethan as polite, thoughtful but with a dry sense of humour. Once you get to know you realize several things. First of all, the man has a cynic streak that runs a mile wide, yet the strange part is that he is also quite a joyful character who seems genuinely entertained whenever these cynic assumptions fall short or are fulfilled. Aethan's primary driving force is to do whatever that is enjoyable. He has no problem raising a moral or ethical point if it would serve his own purposes or be to his own amusement but would at the same time not blink twice to throw those same principles overboard. While he is a friendly and open person who is quick to laughter his personal definition of "honesty" is questionable at the best and he has no personal qualms when it comes to lying, theft, larceny, trickery or similar pursuits. Violence in his personal opinion a tool but not an end to itself and he is not really a cruel man in the sense of the word. In his mind killing a person is almost considered sloppy as it is the easy way out: there are much more elaborate and interesting punishments available in the world. Aethan takes great joy and has a keen interest in the workings and daily life of mankind. He is perceptive and enjoys simply observing people going about their daily life whilst simultaneously contemplating their respective actions. He is a perceptive man who at all time seek to understand what is going on in his surroundings and in the world at large. An intelligent, calm and as previously noted manipulative and lying man, Aethan's greatest flaws are two-fold: first of all is that while he strives to remain cautious he is indirectly a thrill-seeker due to the fact that he is pathologically curious. Knowledge and information are his greatest joys which in turn has led him into trouble in the past. Secondly, he has a bad habit of assuming that he is often the most intelligent person in the room - not in the sense that he thinks that everyone is dumber than he is but rather that he is one of the few who is able to see a wider picture than the one at hand. Hometown: Stearr Island, North Blue History: Honeste vivere Where there are enough people there will also be a settlement. Where there are settlements, merchants are sure to follow. Provided that you have an appropriately sufficient number of people, a large enough settlement and enough money to be made for the merchants, you will also get lawyers. The reason for this is because the people like living in the settlement but dislike the merchants (on account of them being greedy buggers), the merchants like the settlement as a whole but dislike the people (on account of them being stingy and ungrateful) and the ones in charge of the settlement are slowly growing weary of all parties involved (because any population seen as a whole is about as intelligent as a gerbil). The only solution left is to simply provide each party with the necessary tools to sue each other. Aethan was not born to a family of warriors, pirates or marines. He was instead the spawn of a much more terrifying entity – a lawyer. Aethan’s father was a law clerk who primarily worked for the different shipping- and trading-companies based or active on Stearr Island, drafting contracts, letters of credit and bill of ladings or settling dispute as an arbitrator. His mother would later leave the family for reasons unknown, but Aethan never dwelled on her absence in his life. From the time he could talk to his thirteenth birthday he would spend almost every waking hourwith his father whilst simultaneously learning the trade. It must be said that Aethan’s father was not a popular man. He had a reputation as a cold and ruthless man who made his living exploiting the hard labour of other people. This was always odd looking at it from Aethan’s perspective that whilst it was true that his father could be considered cold and hard, he was nevertheless hard-working and very good at his job. The problem, it would turn out, was that he was regrettably also an honest man. Aethan was summarily orphaned in his thirteenth year. At the time there was a riot by the dock workers against the merchants and the trade guilds. People were injured or killed and houses and shops were ransacked or burned to the ground. Aethan’s father was tortured and left to burn to death as their home was set alight. It would later become apparent to the young man that some of his father’s clients had backers of a more “unsavory kind” who in turn had asked that his father forge documents for them. His father had refused and the riots created an opportunity for them to send a message. Following the riots Aethan did the only thing any sane orphaned teen would do: he joined a gang. Alterum non laedere What Aethan initially lacked in actual combat skills he made up by talking very fast and very convincingly for long periods of time. Combined with a keen intelligence and a natural penchant for manipulating physically stronger albeit intellectually inferior superiors, the small gang would soon rise in size, prominence and (relative) wealth. Aethan ran with the gang for some time before "retiring" to an apprentice level position at Logos, one of the larger Insurance companies on Stearr, following the acquisition of certain compromising photographs of the head underwriter's visits to his mistresses. During the last few years Aethan had learned one thing: information is worth more than gold. Information can never be truly destroyed and can be shared for more gold which in turn can be used to acquire more information. A plan had formed in the back of his mind, a plan to attempt to leverage some form of justice upon the world. It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword. This is usually said by men who have yet to experience cold hard steel pressed against their throats. Those that have had the pleasure quickly amend the saying by adding "... assuming you also have a very large bloke with a large gun at your back". But in a sense Aethan knew that the saying was principally sound. Using a pen a man might become a king or a beggar, declare war or sign a peace treaty. It is simply a matter of ensuring that you are in a position wherein a pen can be used to write the correct words. Aethan had slowly pieced together who had ordered his father's murder. The odd thing is that after his father's demise he had never felt that kind of life-changing all-consuming need to take revenge by slaying those responsible. In the end the guilty party was a company and you can't exactly kill a company by conventional means. By the time Aethan turned twenty-four everything was in place. Before a ship is insured the insurance company require specific information such as the details of the shipment, its worth, the identity of the buyer or the port of final destination. As far as information is concerned, it is of the lucrative kind: exactly the kind of information that certain less law-abiding citizens might find useful so that they in turn might facilitate a meeting at sea which can be quickly followed by a transaction. The sea is a dangerous place after all. Through a combination of bribes, tip-offs, agreements, carefully worded insurance policies and one case of defenestration Aethan's masterpiece was complete. He promptly requested a transfer to the Sales and Notice division and was on the first ship off Stearr Island before the last bit of ink had dried. Six months later the unfortunate company began experiencing... oddities. It all started with a shipment of whiskey where upon a closer inspection it became clear that each and every single barrel contained a dead cat in it. Seeing as cats are considered holy in some religions, Logos was able to successfully argue that the loss of the shipment was due to an "act of god" and was thus not covered by the insurance. In another instance a shipment of grain that had gone bad after it had been placed in the warehouse specified in the bill of lading. It soon became apparent that the warehouse was infested with rats. Such things happen but unfortunately they were not able to receive any monetary benefits of their loss as their insurance policy (in very fine print) did not consider rats vermin. This was shortly followed by a steady increase in the number of pirate raids against their shipments, renewed claims for the repayment of loans due to loss of mortgage d ships and so on. Within year two the company was declared bankrupt. Suum cuique tribuere With business back home in safe hands, Aethan felt the need to see the world. His new position meant that he was to investigate insurance claims, serve notices, take witness statements of purported events and to sell new policies. That might seem incredibly dull but consider the fact that the best witness of say, a pirate raid on a ship, would be to interview the pirates in question. In order to keep himself entertained he has done the occasional con (fake jewelry, forged credentials, you name it) or if a specific case catches his fancy he would also do a wee bit of lawyering on the side. So far his resume allegedly includes, among other things, successfully defending a goat on trial for the charge of heresy (he had eaten a holy object (full disclosure: it was a head of cabbage)) on the Island of Sald; unsuccessfully suing the Island of Sald for slander against the aforementioned goat (they chased him off the island); Insuring a mountain against skyfall (as in, the sky literally falling down and crushing the mountain) and facilitating the completely legal acquisition and merger of the Deravo merchant house with the Nose-ring Pirates (at gunpoint, which was rather unnecessary mind you seeing as Aethan was sure to factor in his own fees in his review of the merchants accounts). Aethan is given a very long leash in relation to his employers at Logos. He is given a yearly stipend to cover his travelling costs but other than that he quite frankly does whatever catches his fancy. He has recently pondered the idea of bounty hunting for the sole reason that it would seem like a good way to experience interesting situations. It would not necessarily mean that he is well suited for it on account of him being a thieving and lying bastard. "iuris praecepta sunt haec: honeste vivere, alterum non laedere, suum cuique tribuere" ("the precepts of law are these: to live honestly, to injure no one, to give to each his own") - Justinian's Institutions 1,1,3-4 Abilities and Possessions Combat: Aethan never received any formal combat training and as such has ended up with a combat style of his own designs for good or for worse. He is a calm and calculating fighter utilizes speed and feints to draw in his opponent. His preferred style is to use his speed to avoid attacks while aiming his counter-attacks at weak points such as arteries, tendons or legs. The downside of this approach is that at times he is a very reactionary fighter who prefers not to take unnecessary risks that might otherwise prove necessary to defeat his foe. Aethan is proficient in the use of both his sword and his body. All things said, Aethan's fighting style is neither honourable nor aesthetically pleasing. He is a fighter who utilizes all tools at is disposal, whether they are headbutts or a well placed knee to the groin. Weaponry: An iron wakizashi without a cross-guard in a rosewood sheath carried horizontally on the small of his back. Items: A leather satchel featuring some maps (mostly of the Blues), blank paper, a power of attorney confirming that he represents the Logos trading company, several copies of standard term contracts and a ballpoint pen. Beli: 500,000 SD Earned: 0 Stat Points: 32 SD Remaining: 0 Stats: 32
Jack of All Trades (1 Trait) – The character is able to master multiple skills, and has become adept at a number of things. This character gains two additional secondary professions. Escape Artist (1 Trait) – Being a wily little bugger, the thief is a master of escaping from tight spots and difficult situations. Any debuff to the thief's speed is halved in duration, and they can easily escape most forms of restraint, such as being grappled, shackled, tied, etc. Born Lawyer (1 Trait) – These silver tongued devils have managed to work their ability to talk people into making the best financial deals for themselves into a practical ability. They are able to more easily influence those around them with their words. Civilian Leader (behind the scenes) (1 Trait) - Characters with this trait are gifted with the ability to command respect and admiration from others. Sentient NPCs are easier to sway over to the side of those with this trait. They may gain information, calm down the angry, and sometimes even placate hostile adversaries. Additionally, those normally friendly to strangers find themselves easily enamoured with the character. The user also gains one NPC henchman, who behaves as a crew NPC and is controlled by the player of the main character. They are exceedingly loyal to their ‘master’. [the NPC henchman in question is Aethan's "boss" at Logos, explaining how he can get away with his shenanigans]

I don't think a trait to 'read lies' is going to be a thing. Creating a technique to better discern lies could be possible- likely not worth trying until R8 for basic reading and R14 for more supernatural analyses like Sherlock, etc. But even then it won't ever guarantee it as we heavily discourage things like that- as it is too easily godmod-able or metagame-able/abused. That aside, everything else actually looks fine. Well done. If you can remove the trait and replace it with something else you should be flaggable. (If you wish to pursue the trait that heavily, you're free to PM a Admin about it and see if you can get it approved. I may be wrong on it. If you decide to do so I recommend Unspeakble.) |

Threat is 0, not "Applicable only to bounty hunters/others. Delete otherwise." Weapon specialist applies to all close-combat weaponry, so you do not need to specify swords. Navigator does not exist any more. Upkeep does not exist any more. SD earned is 0. Stat points are 32. Used for stats is 32. Used for Fortune is 0. Jack of All trades has a slightly different description now. Regular technique points and used technique points are 16. Special technique points and used STP is 0. Techniques should include the Power of the technique. Specify what kind of attack Suum quicue is. |

Choose Bounty Hunter or Other, not both. But since that's fairly minor, Topic is flagged for approval. |
