Ittai fell silent as he finished his story. Looking at the bottom of the empty glass, the chef waved over the bartender to pour him several more shots, before looking back at the wide-eyed little boy who listened to his story without interrupting. Of course, the doctor left out the part that he had betrayed his clan and ate the fruit without permission. For some reason he felt like he shouldn't disappoint the child with his own failings. The thought was random and out of nowhere, and disappeared as soon as it appeared, influencing his decision to censor his story a bit. Now that it was over and the kid was still looking at him with wide eyes as if expecting another story. As much as the ex-ninja did not particularly care about revealing a lot about himself, he was drunk enough right now to throw his personal preferences out of the window, for now. Plus, he was telling the story to a kid. And who was going to believe stories that a kid told. "Since I see you're expecting another story, how about I tell you how I got my life return powers?" he asked the kid, taking another shot before launching into the story, not even waiting for a response. ------------------------------------------------ Ittai looked down at the map he had 'received' from a tavern a couple of towns over. Well, more like he killed a drunk for it so in a way he 'receive' the map by picking it up from the man's dead body. Anyways, now that he had the map in his possession, he could finally find that elusive monk that would teach him the ways of controlling his body down to the very cells themselves. Well, the chef doubted that the control would extend that far down, but it was a nice thought. He had heard stories of people being able to control their hair and even increasing the speed of healing their own bodies. Considering that he often got hurt in battle, such an ability would be most welcome. The doctor briefly considered killing the monk if he would not teach him before remembering that he couldn't teach him when he was dead. Then again, the pirate shouldn't allow the monk to teach anyone else if he would not teach him. Yes that was a selfish thought, but oh well. Nearing the place where the monk was supposed to live, Ittai stuck his sword into the ground and called out to the monk. "Oi, is anyone here?" the chef asked, cupping his hands around his mouth. |

Monk Gyatso was very old, but indeed wise. He owned a quaint little monastery in a secluded part of the island. It faced the ocean, and rocks jutted out of the blue liquid, the weather was what most could call perfect, not too hot, not too cold, and there was a light sea breeze that allowed the smell of salt to permeate even the furthest reaches of the island. Gyatso was currently meditating in his room, he was surprised that someone had actually entered his quiet abode. He wasn't one to leave a young-man waiting from what he could tell of the guys voice. "Now, what is it young one? I'm an old impatient man, who isn't getting any more action without worrying about my hips. What do you need of me?" Gyatso's voice seemed hoarse almost, he trotted over to where Ittai was and looked the young man in the eye. |

Ittai looked at the old man shambling towards him, grumbling something or other about being old and cranky. Really the pirate could not care either way. All that mattered was the man's ability to impart his knowledge and ability to the younger generation. The old man certainly looked the part of an old mentor but then again, that did not really saying anything about the man's teaching ability nor about the fact that he actually possessed the powers that the chef was looking for. There was a pretty good chance that the man in front of him was a simple old man, but for the man's sake, the doctor hoped that that was not the case. After all, if that ended up being the truth, then the old man would not remain alive for much longer. If the man had no worth to Ittai, then there was no reason for him to remain alive. Well, the pirate could certainly let the man go, but why waste a perfectly good outlet for frustration for wasting his time. Either way, the chef hoped that the man would not waste his time. "Yeah, I heard that you possessed the ability that goes by the name of Life Return. I would much appreciate it if you could impart that knowledge onto me. You will be paid for your troubles." the doctor said without preamble and straight to the point, patting the money purse on his belt. There really was no reason to beat around the bush and waste both his and the man's time. The quicker he got trained and gained the new powers, the better. After all, Ittai got more important and more fun things to do than to listen to grumpy old men. But unfortunately, he would have to suffer through this if he hoped to increase the repertoire of his abilities. If he was to take his revenge on the Marines and the World Government, he could use as much help as he could get and/or find, even if that included talking to and tolerating instructions from crotchety old men. |

Gyatso looked at the young man once again, from experience he could tell the man was strong, nowhere near as powerful as some of the men he had run into during his old pirating days, but that was off no importance. "I see, so you wish for the ability to control your body, to reach where only a few have reached before, walk with me young man, I believe I can do so, and keep your money, I have no need for something like that." It had been a good while since the old monk had taught a single person, he would have his fun while he could. He turned around, and walked deep into the monastery. He didn't even look back at the young man to see if he was truly following him. "Life return is an old skill, and requires an extreme amount of hard-work, to gain such an ability you will need to understand life. So before I can teach you, you will need to go out and impregnate over 100 women, come back to me then." Gyatso pulled a serious face, before he broke out in laughter, a loud crack could be heard. "Not again...." a few more cracks could be heard, and the old monk was standing up straight once again. He looked at his possible new student."I merely jest with you, but it will take hard work, and I don't want any slackers here. Join me for my jog, it will be difficult young one." And the monk broke out into a run, he was extremely fast, it was hard to imagine someone this old could run at that speed. He ran out the back of the monastery and out onto the beach, the sand was thrown about under his feet, and he was running down the coast of the island. "We will run around this island twice to warm up, don't fall behind." |

Ittai breathed a silent sigh of relief at the monk's mention of not needing the money as payment. After all, the pirate did not have unlimited funds just yet and as such, any money saved was something worth working towards. Granted that he had no use for money when it came to finding a place to sleep or getting some food and drink. For that his trusty sword or his trusty fists would provide most of the things he was looking for. The only thing that money was useful for was hiring mercenaries for his cause and then hoping to convince them of his cause. Thought that rarely worked, the chef just had to try every time in hope of saving some money. However, even if the monk did not want monetary payment, he was expecting some sort of a repayment. The problem was that the doctor had no idea what sort of payment the monk might expect from him and that made him a bit uncomfortable. But if he was to learn mythical powers from strange, old men, he could not be choosy. At least Ittai hoped that he could remain civil with the monk when the payment was going to be discussed. The pirate narrowed his eyes at the old man's joke. There was a tiny bit of rage building in his body at the monk's supposed order. The chef really did not care much for wasting his own time, something the old man was intent on doing, whether it was on purpose or not mattered little. Fortunately, the monk did not waste more time than that, and instead going for some actual training, even if it did involve running dozens of miles around the island. Picking up his sword, the doctor swung it onto his back and took off after the monk, keeping his body aerodynamic and his breathing steady. No need to develop a breathing problem so early in the training session. Following the old man through miles and miles of sandy beaches, Ittai became aware of wild animals coming closer and closer to them as they ran. Finally, one of the animals decided to attack, launching itself towards the pirate as he ran. Grasping his sword, the chef swung it in a wide arc and cleave the animal in half. Replacing the sword onto his back, the doctor continued his run. "Are the attacks part of the training?" Ittai asked, starting to breath heavily. |

The old man laughed as he ran, "As if this run would be difficult without any sort of animals." Gyatso then extended his hair, and took Ittai's sword, and held it up in the air."We're training your body boy, not your swordsmanship, practice that some other time, fight these animals using your body, also, should you stop running, I'll add in another lap around the island." he laughed once again, it had been some time since he had tortur-trained anyone. More animals came this time, some of them looked like extremely large dogs, with green stripes on their backs. One of the younger males jumped for Gyatso, but a powerful hair-whip to the face sent him sprawling backward, and then the young dog-beast had been killed. It's brains were all over the place. The dogs took notice of that, and growled, but went onto attack Ittai instead, there were 5 of them at least. |

Ittai glowered at the monk as the latter took the former's sword with his hair. It wasn't that the pirate was useless without a sword, in fact said pirate was quite proficient in fighting with his hands and feet. No, it was more of the fact that the sword had cost him quite a bit of money to make and outfit with everything that he needed and as such, he did not like parting with it, especially when it was taken from him by a suspect monk who, if for all his bluster about not needing payment, would probably sell the sword for a healthy profit. However, as discontent as he was with getting his sword taken, the chef could not help but marvel in the way that it was taken. He had certainly heard of people using life return to manipulate their hair to grasp objects that were further away than the arms could reach, but he had never seen this type of body manipulation up close before until now. It was truly a sight to behold. After all, life return was the main reason the doctor grew his hair out and acquired a number of hair clip blades. All that was left was to learn said life return. As five of the weird dog-like animals launched themselves at Ittai, the latter twisted at the waist to dodge the initial attack while grabbing one of the dogs out of mid air all the while keeping his feet moving forward after the monk. Bringing the dog around, the pirate smashed his other fist into the dog's skull, breaking it open. Dropping the dead weight onto the ground, the chef prepared for the next attack. He did not have to wait long as the rest of the pack righted themselves and gave chase, quickly closing the distance between them and jumped onto the doctor's back. Jumping into the air, Ittai caught a dog in each hand and brought their heads together in a resounding clash, either stunning or killing them both. Landing back onto the ground, all the while keeping the monk's pace, the pirate was unable to dodge the last two dogs as they lept onto his back, the added weight making him stumble but still remain running. As he reached to grasp one of the dogs on his back, the chef really wished that the damned monk would have taught him how to manipulate his hair before launching on this run. Letting his feet run on instinct, along with his hands grasping at one of the dogs, the doctor focused all his remaining willpower of making his hair move even a little bit. Finally managing to grasp one of the dogs, Ittai pulled it in front of him and smashed it's face in. At the same, well almost same, time, he felt the other dog bite into his shoulder, causing the pirate to will his hair to move out of desperation. He was surprised when there was a yelp and the biting stopped along with an added weight residing on his hair. However, the chef did not have time to ponder about it as he grasped the remaining dog and brought it towards the front of his body, feeling the pull on his hair lessen before smashing the dog's face in and dropping the body onto the ground before continuing the run. |

Gyatso watched his new student with a sense of pride, this young man had grasped the beginning of the first step. He smirked a little before running at an even faster pace. "Lets get this run over with now boy, you've done well enough, you're more than ready to take on the next step." After having finished the two laps, Gyatso lead his student toward the back of the monastery. He handed the boy back his sword, "Here's your sword, take good care of it, it's a marvelous piece of work." it was all he said before he made his way toward one of the jagged rocks pointing out of the water. He had a plank of wood in his hands, Gyatso flipped into the air, and managed to land on top of the jagged rock, what was even more amazing was that he was perfectly balanced on the wooden plank. "Now, I want you to do the same I have done. The step after this would be meditating for a large period of time in this condition. If you are able to do that, I'll show you the next step." To show Ittai what he had meant, Gyatso sat down on the wooden plank, which still managed to balance his weight, and got into a meditative position, and a soft hum could be heard from him. He seemed to be at peace, even more so than he usually was. |

Ittai was breathing very, very hard by the time the duo had finished their run. Granted that he was surprised that he even made it that far, never having run for so long. He figured that his Marine training must have helped with that but he was skeptical about it. Maybe his mind helped with keeping his body going for so long without falling over. Either way, he had passed the first test, which made him rather content. It meant that he wasn't wasting his time just yet. The pirate scowled as he took back his sword and strapped it to his back before following the monk to the next test which was about balancing on a plank on top of a jagged rock. The chef grumbled under his breath as he took the sword back off and set it into the ground in front of a rock before finding a plank to sit upon. Being way too tired to leap onto the rock, the doctor used the embedded sword to climb it first before setting the plank onto the top of the rock. Holding the plank steady, Ittai carefully transferred himself onto the plank and sat down, holding the handle of his sword as he attempted to balance. The first couple of times that the pirate tried to balance himself resulted in him hastily grabbing his sword to stop himself from falling off. A few more tries and failures led him to realize that his breathing was still ragged from the running, the near falls not helping matter at the slightest. As such, the chef took several deep breaths as he held himself by the sword and tried to normalize his breathing rate. It took a couple of minutes, but the doctor finally managed to get his breathing back down to normal and a couple of more minutes, just in case, to further slow down his breathing. Finally deciding that his breathing rate was satisfactory, Ittai let go of the sword, trying to balance without any aid. This time, the pirate managed not to fall off within a couple of minutes like the previous time, keeping himself balanced as he closed his eyes and allowing his senses to keep himself balanced without the aid of his conscious mind, allowing it to wonder and think back on his life. |

Gyatso did his best not to laugh at his new student's failed attempts at getting up to here, lest he end up in the same situation, he nodded approvingly at the fact Ittai was able to balance himself soon enough, even if it did take some time. "Well done, now I want you to look inward, attempt to feel everything, from your heart beat, to your blood flow. Attempt to feel your organs inside of you, your bones, each and every muscle. It'll take time, but it'll be a valuable skill once you master it" He nodded in a sage like manner, before going back to his previous meditation. He could only observe and guide from this point on, his student would have to learn everything himself, while everyone's body operated in similar ways, everyone had their own ways to doing things, even with the old and powerful skill of life-return. ooc |

The reflection on his life was interrupted by the monk instructing him further to meditate and feel his entire body. And as fun as it was to think back on his own life, this was not the time nor the place, at least not as long as the old man kept giving him further directions on how to obtain the semi-mythical powers. With the monk lapsing back into meditative silence, the pirate followed his example and attempted to listen and feel his own body like he never felt it before. It was quite interesting attempting to do so since for the first couple dozen times nothing particularly interesting happening with the chef only hearing either his breathing or his heart beating. However, little by little of trying to feel and listen to the body, the doctor managed to barely begin to feel the edges of his organs and feel the flow of blood in his blood vessels. It was a weird ass feeling, weird enough to briefly startle him from his reverie and quickly shift around to regain his balance lest he should fall off. Ittai briefly considered reaching to steady himself with the sword but managed to balance himself out just in time. Once he had settled back in and got his breathing back down to the normal, non-excited levels, the pirate once again tried to feel the extent of the inside of his body. The second time, it can easier to the chef to feel how his body worked. In fact, he managed to get a deeper understanding of the shape and the location of most if not all of his major organs, even managing to delve beneath the surface said organs to feel the tissue beneath. The monk had said something about feeling out and knowing the location of every single muscle of his body and as such, the doctor began to do just that. After all, if he wasn't going to listen to the instructor, why was he even here? The larger muscles were rather easy to feel and know where they were. It was the smaller muscles in places that he didn't even know he had muscles that were the problem. There really were a lot of them. But if he wasn't going to take the time to locate every one of them, then there was no reason to continue the training. As such, Ittai settled down and began to locate even the most remotest of the muscles. |

Gyatso couldn't help but find himself smirk, his student was doing great. Fantastic even. He looked over to him, any sort of disturbance would bring him out of whatever he was doing. So he made sure to sneak away slowly, doing his best to spread his weight around. He reached the inside of the monastery. He went into the kitchen, and grabbed a two large cymbals that were lying off into the corner. He went back to his meditating student, and grinned, before using them to make large amounts of noise. He stopped for a second."This is the second part of the test, do whatever you were doing before. Just now, you'll need to do so with many distractions, you won't get large amounts of time to do this in a fight, or when you really need to do this." Gyatso was enjoying this, he was allowed to mess with this kid as much as he wanted to. |

Ittai felt like he was making pretty decent progress with the whole concentrating on his body down to the smallest muscles. Hell, the pirate felt a bit proud of himself for that accomplishment, after all, this was what he sat out to do and he was well on his way of accomplishing it. It felt good. However, that feeling did not last long as the chef heard a crashing noise right beside him and, opening his eyes, he pitched forward, the noise startling him enough to lose his balance. Thankfully, the doctor had the presence of mind to grab onto his sword so as to not completely fall off. Scowling at the monk, Ittai really wanted to bite his head off right now, but restrained himself, settling back into the balancing position and letting go of the sword, allowing his body to compensate by itself while the mind was left to concentrate on harder things, like feeling his entire body and the location of every muscle all the while being distracted by the noise. Thankfully, the pirate had undergone some hellish training back when he was younger and training to be a ninja. While it had been a while since then and the chef loathed to associate with anything of his old life, the training fundamentals were ingrained his body too much not to use them subconsciously. As such, it was not that hard to ignore the noise itself while concentrating on his body. What was harder was to ignore the reverberations of the air produced by the cymbals as they crashed. In his heightened state, the doctor could feel, rather than hear, each time the metal came together, throwing a monkey wrench into his senses. However, as with any distraction that he was faced during training and during missions, Ittai worked hard to make these distractions a part of him instead of trying to keep them out entirely. After all, it was easier to accept than to deny them. Granted, accepting them wasn't that easy to begin with, but the pirate was making steady progress, all the while keeping a scowl on his face, his nerves ready to strangle the old man. |

Gyatso stopped with everything, "We'll keep going later on boy, now it's time to get something to eat. Hop off that rock, and come inside. We'll continue this later at night with the next step." Then Gyatso brought out a magazine, the contents would have been simple to gauge as the man laughed perversely. He walked into the monastery with perverse giggles escaping his lips. He didn't care about what his student thought of him nor did he even expect anything, being old and living alone in a monastery was extremely boring, so training people was how he busied himself. He got to work in making food, and it would take him a good while until it was finished. Gyatso finally made it, and sat down at the table, "Now, go ahead and ask any questions you might have." |

Ittai opened his eyes once the distracting sounds were suddenly ended and scowled at the old man. He was happy to take a break but at the same time he was disappointed that the monk decided to give him a break. All the pirate wanted was to get the training over with as soon as possible and as such taking a break was not preferable. Then again, after such intense training, he was feeling a bit weaker as well as much more hungrier than he was earlier that morning. Then again, the chef was not a stranger to hunger during training, having endured it more than a few times. Granted that the training never got as intense as this before. And so, as much as the doctor wanted to either ignore the old man and continue training or maybe asking him to continue said training, he knew that he should take a break and eat something else he collapse during future training and perhaps even die. And that was certainly not according to any plans that he currently had. Using the sword to get off the rock, Ittai followed the old man back to his temple, pointedly ignoring the giggles coming from behind the magazine. The pirate could not care less about how the monk acted and whether or not it was appropriate. He was not here to make friends nor to get to know the old man better. He was here to learn. And if the old man decided to be perverse, it was not the chef's problem. Reaching the temple, the doctor sat down at the table, placing his sword beside him and watched the monk prepare the food. Hearing the old man extend an invitation to ask him any questions that he might have had, Ittai decided that he really didn't unless it related to how soon he might be able to start the training again. "Ok, when is the food gonna be done as well as the training?" the pirate asked, really only caring about those two things. |
