Carpenter Weapons

I seem to be having a bit of trouble making something work so I figured I'd ask directly to figure out if it is just my wording, a rule, or something else I'm not getting.

Anyway, my character is an marksman archer and I'd like her to be able to make weapons with wood like bows, Crossbows and slingshots for handheld weapons and balistas, catapults and trebuchets for ship weaponry. I was thinking it made a lot of sense for a carpenter to get traits related to this but having a spot of trouble making it work and slightly contradicting responses to my custom trait attempts.

Are carpenters able to get a trait that grants a 30% discount, which is comparable to a Smith, for these types weapons?

Carpenters make ships, smiths make weapons.

If you want to make general weapons, go smith and get the discount trait.

If you want to make weapons that are mounted on your ship, you buy them as part of your ship, which regular carpenter discounts will affect.

I'd say this would all fall under carpenter territory but making a trait for stuff like that would be hard though you discount idea I guess works. i'd be in favor of it honestly, but yeah its not really in my hands.

Carpenter
A Carpenter is someone who makes a living off building things, from mainly but not limited to, wood. With the times being as they are, most carpenters build ships, but there are also those who instead possess the knowledge of making better buildings and such, as well as smaller items that they craft.

This is where I get lost, it doesn't say they only make ships just most. And a Smith works with metal not wood so I'm stuck in some weird limbo where my character's history has no experience with metal but obviously has the skills to justify the discount for making wooden weapons. Well, hopefully it can work but if not I'll just have to suck it up and pay that 30% extra for weapons she makes. A little extra work never hurt anyone right?

Carpenters get discounts for ships whether you build them out of metal or wood, it's not a material distinction for their expertise.

There's no reason carpenters should get wooden weapon discounts just because they're wooden, smiths don't get ship discounts just because you build them out of metal.

Smith doesn't function as a literal metalsmith when it comes to discounts, they get discounts for all weapons, including wooden ones. Professions currently are less about defining a character, and more about justifying certain benefits system-wise. There's nothing really wrong with taking smith even if you exclusively want to work with wooden weapons.

Perhaps instead of saying "would" I should have said "should" as Orimi is correct that the system doesn't see things like this for now, however it should look at all a profession is capable of rather than just narrowing it down abstractly.
