was just wondering about this due to my character being a carpenter/blacksmith and just wanted to know exactly how it would all work so there isn't any guess work

I have looked around and I haven't found anything pertaining to this unless I missed it ^^;;

Fucking professions, how do they work?

Anyways, if you go to the actual professions page in the rules, you can just read the info below the two professions. The stuff in italics is a bonus of its your primary profession, and if you to go to the Traits section in the rules, you can find further bonuses you can choose to apply to your character.
Literally Annie

The Gang

On Hiatus

As far as actual application goes, "crafting" items is essentially just buying items from the marketplace section. Smiths and carpenters get the appropriate discounts from the traits and profession bonuses, and are allowed more leeway in what you can buy.

This isn't a huge difference, but crews with carpenters might be able to have slightly more elaborately designed ships and various extra materials for construction, while smiths have access to creating various materials for weapons they buy.

so essentially I just go to buy things and get my 30% discount applied to weapons and stuff that I could make with my carpentry or my smithing?

just double checking

smiths may also imbue the legendary tier material with neat properties, once you can afford them that is

Edit:
to clarify

actually you can make any material with custom properties if you're a blacksmith not just legendary items as well as combine materials together.
