Hello!

First of all, thanks for taking your time to read/reply to these questions. I've read all the rules and browsed through other threads to make sure these questions weren't repetitive nor simply dumb questions, because I know this can be irritating.

I mainly have 2 questions:

First of all, I was going to base my character on a greek hoplite. I've chosen a doru and xiphos as weapons (secondary Weapon Specialist profession) but I was wondering if a shield/armor would fall under the category of weapons as well. If it would, it would kind of defeat the purpose of actually making a hoplite-based rpc, seeing that without a shield it would take quite the amount of damage without proper defense measurements. So basically, would a set of armor/shield count towards the weapons? If yes, I'm assuming I'd have to go for a weapon specialist primary professions or let someone else make it for me. If someone else makes it for me, but I carry it, does this override the rule of beginning with more than 2 weapons? Seeing as they were "gifts" or "purchases"?

Secondly, with the "Jack of all Trades" trait, it says you can not specialize in Weapon specialist, Marksman AND martial artist. Excuse me for reading this incorrectly, but my assumption is that you can not have any kind of combination of these 3? Or does it simply mean you can not add Martial artist to the weapon specialist profession/marksman profession, but are able to be a weapon specialist and marksman?

Thanks a lot in advance!

From what i can tell, armor is not counted as a weapon since it doesn't do damage. A shield might count, since you can bash people with it. But to be honest, either way dont get the weapons profession as the primary one. Its bonus gets out dated after your first storyline when you can buy more weapons, and the ones it provides are only useful for a few story lines until you can buy better ones.

As for the jack of all trades, it means you can not have all 3 combat professions. You can have any combination of two, but not all three.

Shield and armor, depending, may or may not count toward your starter weapons. However, if a member starts his char with more than is allowed, we will just charge you for whatever else you have and you'll remove that from your starting beli. You may be able to afford a shield, but as a starter character, I don't believe 500,000 will be able to get you a full suit of armor. Maybe just a piece or two.

As for jack of all trades, it just means that you can't have all 3 as your professions. So, you can have any two of the three, just not all three. Hope that makes sense

I see. That clears it all up pretty well, except for the shield part as it is indeed a "double edged blade" (ah, the irony).

Thanks for your swift response and help! It is much appreciated!

I'm confused, but regardless of all the buying and stuff. Your character could use all those things to fight with regardless.

Xiphos and Doru would take up your two free slots. They have to be iron also, otherwise you are going to have to pay extra for a better material.

The shield would more than likely also count as a weapon, and you'd have to buy that separately, though, like Chips said, if you just add it to your profile before approval you can get a price and purchase it without having to go to the purchasing area.

The armor isn't full body armor, if you are indeed going for Hoplite-type armor. Really, Hoplite armor only includes arm and leg bracelets, a chest-plate, and a helmet. Also the skirt if you wanted that as well. Since it is very form-fitting and not very bulky, I think it would more than likely count more as an item. Part of your character's outfit. Of course, you'll still have to pay for it since it does increase your character's defense. But as to whether it would count as a weapon, I seriously doubt it. It really doesn't fit the criteria.

I tend to agree with Keiri about using weapons profession as your primary. It allows you to START with more weapons, but honestly, you do one good SL and you'll have plenty of money to buy a couple of iron weapons. There are other professions that you can benefit from further down the line that you might want to consider for your primary. But, its up to you, of course.

@ the bolded part:

I wasn't really going to do that anyways, it was just a possible solution that popped into my head.

As for the hoplite armor, indeed, it would be a light armor, nothing like a real suit of armor.

Spoiler: click to toggle

It would be along these lines, though you can't really see the chest/skirt armor, but you get the general idea.

Anyways, apart from the shield issue, everything has been solved. I thank you all for your answers and patience. Finally able to start working properly on my biography. :D

Just thought I'd throw up a tip.

You said that you weren't really planning on making Weapons Specialist as your primary profession.

If the common professions such as Carpenter, Navigator, Chef don't really appeal to you, there is a profession called "Smith". This refers to like a blacksmith, one who had skill working with metal. If you made Smith your primary it would give you an automatic 20% discount on any weapons or weapons upgrades you do from when you first post up your character for approval onwards.

The Smith profession has three very useful traits tied to it.

Forging Master which increases your discount from 20-30%.

Forge Furnace which gives you a considerable natural defense against heat-based attacks.

And Natural Armor which increases the physical resilience of your character's arms and legs.

Combine that with Weapons Specialist secondary so that you have access to the traits that significantly increase your skill and you have a very good working system for a fighter character with a focus on weapons.

Just a tip, thought you might find it interesting.

Yea, I already have smith as primary. My bio is actually already finished (still need to make a history though). I just wanted to be sure what to do with the issues (jack of all trades and the shield thing) before I started on my history. ^_^

Not sure if i'm supposed to say this, but a mod may close this thread, as everything is answered.

Cheers everyone!

It really doesn't matter in the least if you double post in here. We're not big fans of double-posting in RP threads. If its not an RP thread, then it really doesn't matter.
