Character Template [-----] Account Name: Max Kodan Basic Character Information Name: Loic Moreau Nickname: Cobalt Loic Age: 20 Gender: Male Race: Human Affiliation: Pirate Bounty: 1,500,000 Profession: Inventor An inventor is a man or woman with knowledge in how various mechanical devices work. They have good insight in how blueprints work, and can upgrade weapons, build explosives and battle engines if they have enough materials. Inventors don’t need to pay upkeep for their gadgets that they use in battle. They will also get a 20% discount on any technological upgrades they make to their own weapons. Bring it up with a moderator when upgrading to see if the discount applies. Weapon Specialist (Scythe) A much more general fighter-type profession, a Weapon Specialist is someone who has to a large or small degree devoted his/her life to the mastery of a single weapon or weapon type, such as Swords, Axes or Whips. This profession applies generally to melee weapons. Position: Inventor Physical Appearance Height: 6’0” Weight: 148 lbs Hair: Blue Eyes: Cybernetic: Color changes (Explained below) Clothing/Accessories: Loic generally wears a deep red, button-up, collared shirt with the top few buttons undone. He also wears a pair of black pants that lead down into a similarly colored pair of light shoes for easy movement. On his waist, he wears a belt onto which he can attach his scythe in its folded state. The holster is actually a system of two hooks wide, wire reinforced cloth, one on the belt and one part of the way up on the back of his shirt. When he removes the weapon, the hook on his shirt is flattened back against the shirt, and the one on his belt clicks down into its own place as well. He also wears a beaded armlet that matches his hair color on his upper arm, under his shirt sleeve. Overtop of his normal clothes, Loic usually throws a cloak that is of the deepest black. The cloak looks normal; that is, of course, until the hood is pulled up. Not only does it make him difficult to see while he moves through the shadows, but staring into the face beneath that hood can send a chill down most people's spine. General Appearance: Loic is an incredibly smooth looking person. His eyes are usually calm and distant, even a little sad sometimes. His complexion is a bit light, as even on the sea most of his time is spent indoors working on something. Still, he’s by no means out of shape. What weight he does have is muscle. Lean and trim, if he were wearing clothing with shorter sleeves and pants, he’d look quite quick and speedy. He walks quietly, naturally rolling his feet so that they barely make a noise. Recently, Loic’s eyes were badly damaged in battle. Luckily, he’d been working on something to improve vision, based on his crewmate’s cybernetic arms. With the help of the cybernetic chef and a local doctor, Loic had the eyes installed and is now back on his feet, sharper than ever. The eyes aren’t natural-looking, but instead look like large glasses, framed in silver metal and set into the area around his eyes. The frames are complex, with several rotating rings that adjust his focus. One of the rings (On each eye) has a small black dot on it, which rotates with the ring. The lenses themselves glow with a different color, depending on Loic’s actions, mood, and situation. Normally, they glow a rather pure shade of green. When he’s fighting, they instead glow a brilliant shade of blue, matching his hair and scythe. While he sneaks around or acts in other ways which might be considered sneaky or suspicious, a deep purple color emanates from them. Anger will call out a blood red color, and when he sleeps, the lights shut off completely to preserve power. Spoiler: click to toggle The Character Personality: Loic is generally a fairly easy-going guy when there’s no threat nearby. He doesn’t generally join in celebrations to any great extents, preferring to simply sit by and smile as the party goes on around him. However, if someone attacks civilians, be they pirate, marine, or bounty hunter, he doesn’t hesitate to interrupt and stop the abuse. He has a strong sense of justice in a rather ‘Robin Hood’ type of way, openly opposing anyone who would bring harm to innocent people. Because of these feelings, he tends to be to fairly reserved and suspicious when meeting new people. He makes sure to carefully gauge other people before putting any amount of trust in them, and even then he remains skeptical. In battle, he always attempts to limit the loss of life as much as possible, but if he has to kill someone in order to achieve this goal, he won’t hesitate. Hometown: Vissage Island, Saint-Malo Archapelago, South Blue History: For many years, a small village on a small island that was a part of a small archipelago produced a rather large amount of rice, enough to feed not only the archipelago, but also export to several other nearby islands. That particular section of the south blue was largely self sufficient, as the group of islands each produced a fair amount of nearly every kind of resource amongst themselves. Naturally, however, the area couldn’t prosper properly because, like most islands, there was a group of local vicious pirates that regularly pillaged the towns. More often than not they spared the lives of everyone so long as they cooperated, so there was a repetitive cycle of attack and non-retaliation. A particular young boy, no more than 8, was visiting this island with his parents between the regular pirate extortion runs. They were touring the islands, so that the boy could see the many career opportunities that were available to him. This island (Rice Island) was the third to last stop on their circuit before they arrived back at home. As they wandered the village, asking questions and exploring the details of the jobs that were there, a man dashing through the streets gave a call that kicked off a particularly interesting story (if I do say so myself.) “Pirates!!! PIRATES!!!!” The man’s footfalls were heavy as he ran through the streets, shouting at the top of his lungs. His warnings did not fall on deaf ears, and quickly enough there was a large group gathered in the center of town. Once they calmed down, the man explained that these pirates were not the ones who usually came by and took some supplies and money, they were a different set entirely. He said that he didn’t know the crew’s name, but they were approaching fast. The visiting boy’s mother and father leapt into action quickly and by the time the pirates arrived at the town, they were hidden away within a nearby shed, in one of the numerous hiding places the villagers had built for just such an occasion. When the pirates stomped their way into town, there was only a small group of lightly armed men waiting for them. The boy didn’t see much of what was going on, but he did hear the utter chaos that ensued. He heard the crashing down of doors, the ruckus of a fight out in the village, the shouts of men falling down, injured and killed. He managed a peak through a crack in the boards of the building only once, just in time to see one of the pirates get slashed across the chest by one of the men from town. He was forced to turn away by his mother, who quickly hid the tear soaked face of her son into her shoulder. The family, by some stroke of luck, wasn’t found. Most of the hidden families were safe as well. Nearly an hour after the pirates had left, the remaining people regrouped in the center of the village again. Many of the buildings were smoldering and roofless, but the fires had been extinguished. The adults were talking in a group, but the boy had managed to wander away. He’d seen a farming sickle lying far away from any toolbox, and he was going to put it back near the gathering boats. As he stooped to pick it up, however, he heard a heavy footfall behind him. It was the pirate, the one he’d seen fall over outside his hiding place. His eyes dilated in fear as he turned around to see his attacker grinning maliciously, sword raised above his head to strike. The boy cried out as he turned around. His hand gripped on the nearest thing, the sickle, and his arm flew up to guard against the attack, the tool coming up with it. The sword clashed with the sickle’s blade loudly, but the boy was no longer in the moment. His mind was wandering. Suddenly, it seemed to really sink in what had happened here. At least 10 village men were dead, including the elder. The village had no more supplies; they had all been taken, the houses and buildings were of almost no use, even the boats were slashed and burned and useless. All this destruction, all this death. The boy, just when he thought his own life was over, seemed to feel the weight of the entire situation onto his shoulders. The pirate had thunked to the ground dully, unconscious. The sickle, which the boy had picked up backwards, had stopped the blade before it cut him, and one of the village men bludgeoned the pirate to the ground. The boy was allowed to keep the farming tool, partially because he’d been gripping it so hard that the handle had left a bright red imprint on his fingers. ------------------------------------- It was several years later before anything of interest happened to the boy, Loic. Over the years, he’d begun tinkering with things, fixing up tools, taking old ones and reworking them into something else, improving existing ones, learning the ins and outs of sharpening blades and smoothing and polishing handles. He learned to work with simple things like pulleys and levers and hinges. The sickle had taken a place in his room, resting high on a shelf. Nearly every night over the previous 8 years, Loic had stared up at the tool and thought about that day. Could people really die so easily? What was the purpose it all? Why couldn’t anyone stop it? They were just people trying to live their lives. However, he was 16 now, and it was time for him to head out on his own and review the job opportunities around the islands, on his own this time. He could take as long as he wanted. He left the next day. Even as he was on the first boat heading to the first island, his mind was racing. He knew that he was supposed to choose a profession on one of the islands, but he simply couldn’t focus on it. Was he really supposed to just forget about what happened? Could he really just go on living a simple life while things like that happened? His mind wandered back to the tool from all those years ago, the memento set on his bedroom shelf. He’d never thought of it this way before, but wasn’t a scythe the weapon said to be wielded by Death? He leaned his chin on his palm as he stared out a porthole in the side of the transport ship. He thought about the path that he was going to take, the islands he would be travelling to, and a thought flashed across his mind. It was only a fleeting idea, something he honestly thought was just a passing fantasy. He daydreamed of himself in a village, staring down an entire armada of pirates, wielding the weapon of Death itself. He was jostled from his dream when the ship docked at the first island. While on his tour, Loic spent most of his spending money on a little hobby. He decided that, for the sake of doing it, he would build himself a combat scythe, though it would be more for show than anything. In the first village he bought several short lengths of wood. The second found him several tools and a case to keep all of his materials in. The third island held a store where the bought several small devices that would allow him to put the scythe together and take it apart while still working on it. On the fourth island, he rested. Actually, he stopped to work at a blacksmith’s shop for a few weeks. He’d been all but hemorrhaging his spending money on his newfound hobby. While he was there, the generous owner also gave him some metal to work with on his own. From that metal, he managed to work out a fairly nice looking blade for his makeshift weapon. Of course, he had some help from the blacksmith. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), Loic was still an amateur with metalworking, so even with the help of his mentor, he managed to mess up when it came to refining the metal, apparently. He wasn’t sure what he did wrong, but the blade came out a sky blue color. Still, even with the mix up, it didn’t affect the strength of the metal, though it did cause the blacksmith to make a joking comparison between the blade and Loic’s hair. Oh well, it was just for show, wasn’t it? At his next stop, Loic put the finishing touches on his piece of art. One of the finishers there coated and lacquered the wood and polished them to a black shine. He then arrived at a tailor’s shop, where he altered his clothes to be able to hold the scythe on his person, instead of in the case he’d bought. The next island brought him to a large forest full of woodsmen and lumberjacks. While Loic was fairly sure that there was no way that he was going to actually become a lumberjack, he spent some time here. He decided, just for kicks, he would see how it felt to use the scythe, like he did in his daydream. Strangely, he felt at home swinging the scythe around. In fact, he found it to be quite natural. He stayed there for a few days, learning to properly swing the scythe around without slicing his arm off. He found that a reverse grip not only felt more comfortable, but made him look way cooler, too. That day, he decided on what it was he was going to do. He finished his rounds (visiting the graves of the men in the rice village along the way) and returned home, telling his parents that he had decided to become a wandering inventor. A year later, he bought a small ship and set out and began building and innovating small things that he could sell whenever he stopped at an island. Of course, as he went, he also trained more with his scythe, and got into several scraps with pirates, and one or two marines (When they were extorting or mistreating villagers). Somehow, he found himself as a sort of outlaw over time, though not one that the marines would pay enough attention to to search for specifically. Now he’s just wandering the South Blue, selling his inventions and protecting villagers whenever possible. ------------------------------------- One fateful day, Loic found himself on a large island called South Amerigo. Before stepping into town, and after stepping off the ferry boat (He’d had to sell his boat in Swift Breeze, previously), he saw in the distance that the town was being attacked by pirates. He ducked behind a large crate on the dock and took a sharp breath in. This was the moment he was waiting for, he’d be able to prove himself against such a large gathering of-There were more of them? Most of the townsfolk had been taken to work in the mines, but there were more pirates now. They looked…different. And that’s how Loic came to be a pirate himself. He helped to free the townspeople, along with the Laughing Pirates. He and his new pirate comrades sailed the South Blue, stealing only from the pirates who stole themselves, and using that money to buy their own stuff instead of just stealing more of it. Loic hadn’t really thought too much about becoming a pirate, but hey: Whatever works. And these guys weren’t so bad…in fact, this Zyphe fellow seemed quite fun. Nothing like most of the pirates he’d run into. One fateful, fateful day, Loic found himself wrapped up in a full scale crew war with another crew. They’d stolen the Laughing Pirates’ newly bought ship, and they were none too happy about it. On the deck of the ship, the battle raged, with the crews squaring off against their respective opponents. Loic and their new doctor, Sasha, found themselves facing down the nefarious Doctor Huff. The battle ended in victory, but at the last moment, Loic realized something. The poison gas the Doctor had been using didn’t exactly sit well with his eyes. Within an hour, he was barely able to see a blurry vision of his hand in front of his own face. Loic, however, had been studying Calibur’s arm, and had had a fairly good idea of what he could do. Calling Zyphe in to a private meeting, he asked a favor. The crew stopped at an island to resupply on the way to Reverse Mountain, Loic struck out on his own, getting some directions to a scientist he’d heard of: Doctor Robro. Immediately upon walking in the door, he was stopped by the sound of a paper shaking in his face. He blinked (Ironic, considering he couldn’t really see) before the scientist began assaulting him. “What are you doing, young man! I swear, if Laylin knew you were a PIRATE!” Laylin…? “You know the old man?” Laylin had been the name of the blacksmith under whom Loic had made his flawed scythe blade. Robro stopped and viewed Loic skeptically. He waved his hand in front of his face, paced around him a couple of times, then stopped and stared directly into Loic’s eyes. “You’re blind as a bat, aren’t you?” Loic nodded, but crossed his arms, waiting for an answer to his own question. Robro sighed. “Laylin and I go way back. We were both originally metalworkers, but I became more interested in cybernetics. We’ve always stayed in contact. When he sent me a letter about an apprentice, however temporary, I was excited to meet you. Then I saw your name on a wanted poster!” Loic looked down and away. “It’s not what you think. We haven’t attacked anyone who didn’t deserve it. A pirate crew that took over a town, some marines that were attacking us right in the middle of the city, a crew that stole our ship…Nothing uncalled for.” Loic straightened his back and set his jaw. “We’re not like some of those other pirates out there. We’re only in it for the freedom. I haven’t changed one bit from whatever Master Laylin might have told you.” Robro chuckled. “Master Laylin indeed.” He took another pace around Loic, glancing at the scythe that had been tucked securely on the back of the cloak. The blue blade glinted dully in the light. “…So you still have it, eh?” He sighed, and before Loic had the chance to respond, Robro grabbed his arm and dragged him into another room. “Now then, why did you seek me out?” Loic took a deep breath and began explaining. He told Robro about Caliber’s arms, about what he’d learned about cybernetics, and a variety of other things. He also told him of his own plans. As carefully as he could, he detailed out what he envisioned. Robro nodded and took a sparse few notes. When Loic stopped and took a breath, he nodded. “They’ll be done by tomorrow, and installed by tomorrow evening.” Loic barely remembered the next 24 hours. What he did remember is running through his head the layout of the ship, pulling the cloak over his bandaged head, and pacing perfectly into his room, and then closing the door. He also remembered pawing around and finding a desk, and setting the book Robro had left him on top of it. Soon enough, they were headed for Reverse Mountain. Abilities and Possessions Combat: Loic wields a scythe in a backhanded fashion, giving him a unique style of combat. He uses unusual movements to put him in a position where he can attack, but he is out of his opponent’s attack arc. He can also do damage to people standing behind him and to the side. Weaponry: Loic’s scythe is one that he built himself. At its full height, the handle is as tall as he is, 6 feet exactly. The blade is 20 inches long and takes on a striking blue color, but only because of a mistake in the forging process. The most unique feature of the scythe is its ability to be folded up. The handle folds up with a hinge mechanic in three places so that it can fit easily in its holster on his belt and shirt. The scythe can be taken out at a moment’s notice, and with the proper flick of the wrist it clicks itself into place. Also, Loic has a low quality steel sickle, which also strikes fear into the weak minded among those around it, if they happen to catch sight of it. Spoiler: click to toggle Items: A small set of items that click together in various ways, used to keep his mind busy when he’s bored. Death's Shroud: Loic's black cloak that he almost constantly wears. While the hood is pulled over his head, anyone who looks into it will fear what they see, depending on their fortune as related to Loic's. It also allows him to move undetected through the shadows.(The fear effect only works on those who look on the hooded face with a Fortune lower then Loic's. Those with a greater accuracy then his Fortune*2.5 can see him clearly in the shadows) A set of tools meant to work on cybernetic parts. Not the best, he intends to get better ones later. A reference book from Doctor Robro containing notes and theory and information on all things cybernetic. There is a large amount of space left in the back for personal expansion. A shirt with a rainbow on it. Don’t ask. Ever. Seriously, the damn thing can NOT be gotten rid of. Copy/paste descriptions of the professions, please. We usually say no to buffs involving 'overdrive' on cybernetics. But I'll let someone else be the final say. |
