Gene looked out at the vast open sea, the water was a beautiful blue, the ripples of the water had a serene effect to them. The boat he was on was given to him by a crazy cook that goes by the name 'Salty', whom he vaguely remembered as a child. It was a suitable vessel, as it could hold two with some comfort and had a storage area for belongings. Its' mast was average in size and so was the sail, the only problem with the boat was that it was painted. It was a tar black in color except for the sides, they had the jolly roger on both sides. Gene objected adamantly about its' looks, but in the end it was take it or leave it. He just hoped that the Marines didn't see this, till he could exchange or steal a new one.

"Why in the hell are we out here? Sure we may have blowup the last ship by accident, but...." "Well....the cannon looked perfectly fine.....in the beginning" Two marines were on deck of the worn patrol ship, one was scanning the area, and the other was lounging against the railing. They were part of a crew that was assigned to watch for pirates in this part of North Blue. "Yeah yeah....but patrol duty has to be the most boring task. I mean it has to be the mos........ What the....HEY I SEE A PIRATE.." A bell on the ship rang as the Marines scrambled on deck, as they drew closer to the little black boat.

Gene was adjusting the sails to better catch the wind, the Hitsuji Archipelago was just coming into sight and he wanted to get there ASAP. Unfortunately the Marine ship was faster then his, so before he could do anything they were beside him guns trained to him. He raised his hands in surrender, they ordered him to climb up the ladder very slowly. Once on board they held him at gun point as some went to hoist up his boat. "Hi...nice day for a journey isn't it?" Gene said those words in a light-hearted manner, he was hoping that would lighten the mood. It didn't work as their faces looked grim, and unpleasant things ran through his mind until.

There was an explosion, not enough to sink the ship but it rocked it enough to throw him and a few others into the water. Gene had enough time to see the water approaching, and to shout. "Shit" Before hitting the water he took a very deep breath, hoping for a miracle.

It had been a week. A whole week, since Arthro’s ship had exploded, marking one of his greatest discoveries yet. He had salvaged a few pieces of driftwood and cloth and fashioned a floating table so he could continue to experiment while he still had all the numbers still in his head. He was without a ship, but he was still a fishman and was at home in the sea. All that he needed for food, he was able to find on the sea floor and since there were no sea kings in his area, there was no real danger. He was free to continue his experiments. The only problem was, he was running out of supplies. Most importantly he was running out of fuel and without fuel he couldn’t experiment at all. Unfortunately, flammable materials were few and far between.

Things weren’t completely out of his favor however, as he ran unto a small mermaid town on the fifth day where he was able to get directions to the closest island. He had never been the Histuji Archipelago, so he figured it’d be a new adventure.

It was the morning of the second day. He had worked through the night and was still going at it, even though the sun was poking above the horizon. He was so engrossed in his work that he didn’t notice where he was paddling and slammed straight into the side of a marine ship, causing his numerous vials to topple. ”Shit!” In a split second, he dove into the water, only barely avoiding having his head taken off as an explosion ripped a sizable hole in the boat. He debated going up to apologize, but it was a marine ship and the hole was small enough that they could prevent sinking if they hurried.

His thoughts were interrupted by a few large loud splashes. He could see most of the figures start treading water, but one curiously just fell, limp, with no visible injuries. He thought for a moment before it finally hit him. It was a devil fruit user! He had heard of their famous weakness, but had never seen it first-hand.

Well, he supposed, marine or not, it was his fault the man was drowning so it was his responsibility to save him. Without further ado, he sped up in an intercept course with the falling man and lifted his torso up out of the water. ”The pirate has an accomplice!” “Who cares? We’re sinking! I checked the wanted posters and they don’t have bounties anyways. Just save the ship.”

Well, this sure was an interesting development. Apparently the man he had saved was a pirate like himself. He looked around and spotted the man’s smaller ship that he hadn’t noticed before when the marine ship was covering it. ”Well my new friend, it seems we get a free getaway” One powerful kick and he was on the deck of the small pirate ship where he set his new friend back onto solid ground. ”I suppose we don’t have much time for introductions, I was heading to the Histuji Archipelago, is that good with you?”

Everything was noise and dancing lights as stuff was falling all around him, sounded like there was voices off in the distance. What seemed like hours passed, before Gene was pulled up back to his boat. Once he was out the damning sea, he regained his strength and sense of reality. ”Well my new friend, it seems we get a free getaway" Gene just looked at him for a minute, near death drowning wasn't the best condition for clear thought. 'Ok, a blue thing is talking to me...yep I dead' He nodded a bit before shaking the water out of his hair, somehow that cleared his head a bit. "Yeah...till those seaweed brains get bored again."

He got up to readjust the sails so they could head for the archipelago, and to get away from the Marines. ”I suppose we don’t have much time for introductions, I was heading to the Histuji Archipelago, is that good with you?” "True...names Gene...thanks for bailing me out. I'm...not a good swimmer anymore, so drowning's a hazard. Heh." After adjusting the sails he went to the tiller and steered to the island. "Two questions 'friend', what are you exactly and why did you put a hole in their ship?" Gene had sort of a grin thinking about the Marine ship, too bad the hole wasn't bigger, one less scow in the water was a good thing.

It was going to take about an hour for the boat to make it, now that the wind was slacking a little. The time out on the sea didn't bother him, it was tranquil and gave his clothes time to dry. The time spent also gave him time to get to know this strange guy that he owed his life to. A life debt wasn't a thing to play with, and Gene wanted to know more about his savior before getting to involved.

Arthro squeezed out of his soaking knapsack and hung it up on a nearby post. The sun was now fully above the horizon and it wouldn’t take long for the rubbery material to dry. Looking back to stern, he surveyed the damage. They had plugged the hole, but not without taking on massive amounts of water. The small marine ship was a good 3 feet deeper in the water than it was supposed to. It would take them a full day before they were high and dry again. He turned back towards his companion and let out a deep rumbling chuckle at the incoming pair of questions.

”Well, first of all, my name’s Arthro. To answer you first question, I’m a fishman, although probably not a variety you’re used to. As for the marine ship…” He scratched behind a antenna embarrassedly. “…that was kind of an accident. See, I’m a chemist and I was working on a new variety of explosive. I guess I was so focused on what I was doing that I didn’t notice the marine ship until I was crashing into it.” Giving out a nervous laugh, he walked towards the bow.

He spotted the cluster of islands on the horizon. ”Looks like we’ll be there soon. I have to replace a few broken test tubes, what business do you have on the island?” He had never planned on coming to the Histuji Archipelago, but it seemed there was no alternative. He thought for a second and turned back around. ”I’ve heard about the Archipelago and apparently the place is crawling with bounty hunters. If I were you, I would dock at the most uninhabited place you can find, although with this boat, being inconspicuous will be next to impossible.” He walked over and opened up his backpack, He fished out a pair of corduroy pants, which he pulled over his now dry bathing suit and donned a lab coat to complete the ensemble.

He listened to the unusual fishman tell him his name and explain how the hole was made. 'It was an accident? Well lucky for me it happen' Gene chuckled a little at that thought, and this 'Anthro' guy knew about explosives, a scary combination. Since the sun was doing a fairly good job of baking the water from his clothes, Gene felt a little better. After he tied the tiller to a fixed position he took out a map of the North blue, it was pretty old so he took care not to rip it.

Gene heard the fishman ask a question that he was unsure about answering, but this guy saved him and Gene felt he had to be upfront. "I'm...looking for information. There were two bounties collected about fifteen years ago, and I am trying to find where and who collected them." His voice and tone seemed to ooze loathing with a silent hint of blood lust. After hearing Anthro's description of the place he looked closer at the weathered map. Muttering "Lowlifes" under his breath, Gene tried to determined where would be a safe place to stop.

"Seems it's a cluster of islands, very slim chance of finding a pirate safe dock. The main villages are the northern, central, and southern parts, so..." He pointed to the west and east, he hated to do what he was thinking but secrets weren't going to help either of them at this point. "I may need your help with this. If we can find anyplace to tie off the boat, preferably the last place expected. I'll need you to check that there isn't any hidden rocks that can damage the bottom." Gene sighed as he was telling Anthro his idea, this part was going to be the hardest. "You may have guessed, but I ate a Devil fruit and the sea hates me. My Bug Bug fruit is a spider model, so climbing a sheer cliff isn't a problem for me." His plan was simple, find a place the villagers wouldn't think to look and get on the island unnoticed, he hoped.

Surprised by Gene’s sudden anger, Arthro became more serious. He walked closer to see the map Gene was referring to. Looking over the islands’ terrain, he figured a rough idea of what Gene was planning, widening his eyes after hearing Gene’s boast of climbing a shear cliff. However, there was one snag in the plan. ”Yes, I can do as you say, but there is one problem. Even if you can climb a cliff face, I can’t and I doubt you can pull all 300 pounds of me up with you.” He scratched the back of his head in frustration. ”I guess it could be possible for me to swim around to a easier shore, but the idea of us splitting up in bounty hunter heaven, doesn’t appeal to me in the least.” He shrugged. ”Well, doesn’t seem there’s any other option though. If it’s the only way then that’s what we’ll have to do.”

He turned back towards the group of islands coming ever closer. They were now close enough to see people working on the docks. It looked like a normal, hard working town, but looks could be deceiving. He donned his backpack and walked to the edge of the starboard side. ”I’ll get in the water and start scouting around for rocks then. Make sure to keep your distance until you’re out of sight of the docks. You don’t want them seeing that giant jolly roger.” He stepped off the side, making a towering splash.

It took him a second to understand what he was seeing. There was a literal minefield under the surface. The rocky spikes jutted up around the whole of the archipelago from what he could see. The good thing was, there was an obvious pathway. The islanders needed to get here and there so it only made sense. He hurriedly resurfaced. ”Change of plans, there is a wall of rocky spikes surrounding the archipelago. There are a few obvious pathways that are the only way in. Looks like the only way is the belly of the beast.” He cursed his luck for befriending some one with a ship as conspicuous as Gene’s. All he had left going for him now was his nonexistent bounty.

He motioned for Gene to follow and swam lazily into the large path among the mines.

His eyebrows raised in a bit of shock, noway he could be that heavy. Fishmen, he knew were stronger and tougher then humans, but Anthro looked like he could be a little over two hundred. He sighed, there was noway he could pull that and they had to hurry before being seen. "Yeah splittin' up's not a great idea, not with this many money hungry nuts living here." As they got closer he could make out dock works and towns people working hard, and it was all a rues made to lure travelers to their doom.

Gene heeded Anthro's advice about not getting to close, so he turn his sail to reduce catching the wind and just floated with momentum, while watching out for signs of him being spotted. One day, if he and Anthro survived this island, Gene was going to have a long talk with 'Salty' about marking boat without reasons. ”Change of plans, there is a wall of rocky spikes surrounding the archipelago. There are a few obvious pathways that are the only way in. Looks like the only way is the belly of the beast.” "You have got to be kidding me... When I get my hands on that crazy old cook, i'll kill him for making me take this floating bulls eye." He nodded to Anthro as he lead the way through the treacherous path of ship deadly rocks.

Gene paddled his boat slowly behind his new 'friend', trusting him not to sink him. From the rumors and stories he heard, the whole of the Fishmen race were cruel battle harden pirates that hated humans. So why was this one so different then the others, or maybe they were just as diverse as humans were themselves. "So Anthro, what brings you to the North Blue? Can't be the food, heard it was terrible." Since they were both going to be stuck together, might as well get to know him. Gene hoped that slow going wouldn't draw any attention, and so far so good, for now.

Arthro cracked a wide smile at Gene’s humorous threat. He veered a little to the left, studying the spikes jutting out of the ground. It was obvious that they were natural, but her couldn’t figure out how the islanders had managed to make a path through them. It looked as if some one had just dragged a sea king right through the spikes. The ground on the path was covered with piles upon piles of rubble.

He twisted around to make sure he was still being followed closely, inadvertently noticing just how outrageous his friend’s boat was. Even for a pirate ship, it was tacky. He shifted his eyes upward to meet Gene’s, laughing a little at his joke. ”Believe it or not, the food isn’t much different. I come from east blue. As for why I’m here, I’m not really sure. I don’t really plan these things. Usually I’m too engrossed in my experiments to see where I’m going anyway.”

He veered around another bend in the path. Looking ahead, a young boy’s eyes widen as he saw the jolly rodger on the boat. He dropped the fishing nets he was handling and shot up, running into the city. It wasn’t long until other dock workers saw also, and a few of them fled the scene.

He yelled over his shoulder. ”Well Gene, looks like we’re getting the royal welcome, be on your guard.”

By the looks of this place it was all natural, and that bothered him a lot since his question was, how could this path had been made. Following Anthro wasn't a easy task since the path had a few twists and turns, as well as the unfortunate hazard of coming into view of the villagers from time to time. "I see, your a wherever the wind takes me guy huh? Your from the East Blue.... I'm from Aokuchi Island here in the North Blue, so I guess the foods about the same." Gene just kept his fingers crossed that they wouldn't be spotted, he'd hate to fight everyone on the Hitsuji Archipelago if he didn't have to.

As they veered around a bend he heard Anthro say. ”Well Gene, looks like we’re getting the royal welcome, be on your guard.” He looked up and caught a glimpse of people running toward the city, this didn't look to good for them. "Dammit! We have to hurry before they start shooting. Looks like if we make it through this alive, we going to need a new boat." The closer they came to a place to dock, the more worried he got about how big their reception will be. Regardless, he gathered his guns by him just in case it wasn't a warm welcome.

After a few minutes, a small beach-like area came into view, it looked to be usable there was just one small problem. Some of the villagers were already there, with their false cheering and welcoming arms. "Any ideas on what to do? They'll be friendly in the beginning, but i'd caution eating anything they give us."

”Well, it’s not like this boat has brought you anything but trouble anyway.” Arthro shouted back. The turns had started getting more complicated so he slowed down a bit so Gene would have time to react. The beach was getting closer and Arthro cautiously started scanning the villagers. A fisherman, carrying a bucket full of fish waved at them as he walked up the dock. Two children were playing in the sand under the dock and had constructed a surprisingly detailed castle, moat and all. A woman, with a rounded belly was hanging up clothes. It was hard to believe that this town was really run by bounty hunters, but he guessed the fact that the innocence was so believable was what made them successful.

He made a mental note of what Gene said. No pigging out tonight unfortunately. He answered quietly as they were barely out of earshot. ”I think it’s best to go along with it. If they think we’re on to them, it’ll only hasten the confrontation. Let’s just play along until we have what we have came for and slip out unnoticed before they have time to spring their trap.”

Arthro swam into the mouth of the bay and turned around. ”Okay, it’s clear from here on, pick a dock and tie up.” He swam lazily into the bay, keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior, but none presented itself.

He squeezed the sand between his toes as his feet hit land. He walked a few steps so his head was out of the water and paused. Some kids were throwing the ball in the water. One was obviously younger and couldn’t throw the ball as well, so they were constantly drifting back as the older one came closer to catch the ball. The younger didn’t notice the small, transparent, mushroom-like shape behind him. He took another step back. Before anyone could react to his sudden movement, he sped through the water, stopping right behind the child with jellyfish in hand. ”Look kid, you need to watch where you’re stepping. These stingers won’t affect my exoskeleton, but they’ll give you a nasty burn you won’t forget. The boy nodded his head dumbly, jaw still dropped. He walked up onto the beach and turned around to check his partner’s progress, faintly hearing the sound of guns and swords being slid back into their hiding places.

'Yeah he's right this things trouble and nothing but...till I burn it' Scanning the beach area there were old fishermen, kids playing and possibly the best seller, a pregnant woman doing laundry. To think that nearly everyone here was a hunter, or one in training. Gene had to mentally repeat, 'They may not be the ones' , over and over as his little boat neared the beach. He heard Anthro's advice and agreed to it, better to not let them know, an all out fight wasn't desired.

Gene was slow to paddle to any dock seeing as they all lead to trouble, but he had to pick one so he eyed the least crowded one and docked there. Strangely he had this sense that they were being watched very closely, like at any minute Anthro and himself were going to go on a mad killing spree. Once he was close enough, Gene tied the boat off, grabbed his rifle, adjusted his pistol belt and jumped up on the pier. Since he was armed the people's tension was a little bit higher, knowing this he slung the rifle across his back to free his hands.

He noticed their reactions to Anthro saving a child from a jellyfish, he made a mental note about how they were armed, and the quick reaction time they possessed. As he was walking to where his partner was, some of the men were inching closer together. "Thank you for allowing my friend and myself the privilege to stop here." A show of manners might ease them a little, but he doubted it. "Don't mind the boat, a crazy guy gave it to me. Said I either take it or swim the whole North Blue. Heh heh..." Once he got by Anthro he felt a little bit safer, he hoped these people would try to arrest them, least for now.

Arthro walked up the beach and onto dryer land, waiting a bit for Gene to catch up. He looked up at the setting sun worriedly. ”Looks like navigating through those damn rocks took the whole day away, lets get some food and go find somewhere to sleep.” Arthro didn’t like the idea of sleeping surrounded by bounty hunters, but staying up during the night would only increase suspicion. He started off into the small town.

Since it was a fishing port, the town itself was built right by the docks. The buildings closer to the water were more food oriented, while the further you went in, the less commercial it became. He scanned the signs, turning down multiple luxurious looking taverns. He was looking for something much grittier. This would serve their purposes in two ways. First, the more luxurious taverns were probably owned by the more successful bounty hunters and had more elaborate traps. Secondly, if it appeared they couldn’t afford anything, the villagers wouldn’t consider them a threat. Even in a place like this there had to be an honest, regular tavern owner to deal with all of the law-abiding visitors to the island.

His eyes locked on a shabbier looking tavern. It wasn’t full of bullet holes and slices like of some of the other more rundown taverns. No, those were to bait the thrill-seeking pirates. This one looked normal, just a little old.

He ducked into the doorway and looked around. Straight in front of him were three simple tables surrounded by chairs, all empty. To the left there was a bar with two drunk farmers singing something unintelligible. That segued into a clerk’s desk where a wide-eyed girl and old woman were staring slack jawed. This seemed to confirm Arthro’s guess. There would be little danger in this in. Nevertheless he would not let his guard down. He turned to Gene. ”Well, you think this is a good place to get a room? I’m famished, lets buy something to eat.” He wasn’t planning to eat the food, but it would look suspicious not to order dinner.

Gene flowed Anthro's line of sight and nodded his agreement, they'd have to spend the night here. "Agreed, let's just hope we can survive till morning." He thought if these people didn't snag them first, maybe he could snoop around and find out who'd been caught thus far. As he walked behind Anthro, he saw several different buildings the front ones were dedicated to food. The further they went into the village, the more rundown and worn they seemed to be. The upscale taverns were definitely deathtraps in waiting, and he wasn't in the mood to dodge projectiles. The shabbier ones with all the damage concerned him somewhat. Sword slashes he knew nothing about, but the bullet holes showed both sloppy and accurate shots. Even more disturbing was that some of the shots were entering the taverns.

They finally came to a wreck of a place, but at least it wasn't diced or holey. Walking in the place was small, in need of repair, and nearly dead. Three tables in the place and they were empty, the bar had two drunk guys singing so bad that cats would cry in pain. Gene noticed the wide-eyed, yet slightly cute girl stop what she was doing as the two men entered the establishment. The old women was staring like she just seen a freaking ghost stroll in, honestly these people were obvious.

"Yeah....a warm bed and a nice meal bets a boat any day of the year." He turned to address both women, trying to calmly smile, all the while knowing they could be plotting trouble for him and Anthro. "Do you happen to have a two bed room for my friend and I? Also could we have something to eat, a simple meal would be greatly appreciated, Madam... Miss.." Gene turned towards Anthro and whispered. "Did you see those other places that were shot up? Some of those are random shots and some were done with more accuracy. Also a few holes were entry points...I think this village has been raided in the past."

”Well that explains why the town has turned out as it has. I see where it would be hard for them not to develop a hate of pirates with situation they’re in.” The people here were doing nothing wrong, they were just reacting to a fate that wasn’t their fault. He felt a little sorry for them.

The old woman finally seemed to catch her breath. Making sure not too look them in the eyes for fear of provoking them, she mumbled out a greatly reduced price. Arthro chuckled and gave her triple the amount. She quickly stowed it away and yelled into the room behind her for two bowls of stew to be filled. Arthro sat down and in no time at all a bowl of stew was set down in front of them. He blew on his spoon and turned to Gene ”If you don’t mind, I’ll take second watch. I have been so caught up in my work, that haven’t slept for two days.”

Cursing himself for almost forgetting, he reached inside his backpack a pulled out a small vial full of black liquid and put three drops of it in his stew. He shoved the tiny cork back inside and put the vial back in his bag. The liquid spread itself through the stew almost like it was mixing itself before completely fading away. Satisfied that it was thoroughly mixed, he dug in.

"Hmm." He agreed that maybe these villagers were just a product of what has been happening. Gene felt a slight pang of sympathy for these poor people, but still the villagers would bag them in a second. He sat down at a table with Anthro and in no time their stew was served, he eyed his friend before trying it. Simple with a hint of spice to perk up the flavor, not a bad dish he thought. "Ok..if you need sleep that bad i'll take first watch. In the morning you can get your supplies, my business will require more...time." After finishing the stew, he left some money as his way of thanks and asked the elder woman. "May I ask what room are we assigned to?" She looked at him with a slight bit of fear, he was a pirate after all, but she pushed it away and answered politely. "It's the third room on the left...here is the key." She handed him the key and them calmly went back to work. He looked at Anthro and spoke plainly, trying to insert a false sense of weariness. "See you up there..."

Once in the room he was going to be sharing with Anthro, Gene took out his two pistols and rifle laying them on the bed. He figured the other would be up as soon as he was done downstairs. He proceeded to slowly take apart and clean his guns one at a time. Doing this was one way to keep himself up till his shift was over, it also kept his mind and senses from dulling. He would nod to Anthro whenever he entered the room and wait for his turn to sleep. He heard lots of sound in the connected rooms, as well as the lower floor. He guessed it was getting close to closing time, and the owners should be settling in for the night.

During his lookout time he thought about what his purpose here was. He had to somehow get a hold of the bounty posters, as well as the collected posters. Somewhere in all the blues there was the answers to his questions for his quest to find his parents killer. He decided to let Anthro sleep an extra hour before waking him, then placing his now cleaned guns beside the bed he fell asleep.
