Jayce had come to the island where the legendary Gold D. Roger had been born out of a feeling that it was a good place to start. Loguetown had a deep history in piracy, and he really doubted that he was the only prospective privateer who thought the same way. Good place to find them, then.

After his last failed attempt at piratey shenanigans - where he had acted as an inside contact for someone planning to pillage a trade ship, the Blue Albatross - he had come to the conclusion that acting alone was rather a bad idea. He had gone to retrieve something from the kitchen he was running temporarily when something had rammed the Albatross.

Presumably this had been the attacking pirate ship, but he had not been around to see the ensuing chaos - the jolt had knocked a large sack of flour from a shelf above him, and he spent the next... however long it had been... unconscious.

Despite being excluded from the festivities proper by the accident, he had managed to snag a few valuables before he bailed. This only emphasized to him that he needed a someone else around in case he was incapacitated in a more important situation.

The problem was finding them. He had no idea where to look! He could browse through seedy bars, but anyone there would probably want money, and he wasn't rolling in it. He needed someone... with mutual interests.

So he set a building on fire.

It had seemed like a good idea at the time! There would probably be some looters about, right? Only... the building kind of went up faster than he had expected.

And spread to a couple nearby buildings.

How was he supposed to know one of them was a gun shop?

Boom.

Jayce tried his best to look like an innocent, horrified bystander. He was a victim of circumstance anyway, right?

Loguetown, usually a quiet place for the most part, and home to a number of pirates. That was the place that Kristina was born and raised, and the place she was attached too. She really did like the town, with all the people and the places, Especially this little bar down a back alleyway, where this old man would tell stories about pirates, even about Gol D. Roger!

It was for this reason that when she heard an explosion off in the distance, she immediately took off to see what was up. She also knew that there were some shops off in that area, and that everyone would be out and distracted by the fires, and not pay attention to her. At least, that's what she was hoping.

So she took off down the alleyways, making her way towards the fires, taking some shortcuts and secret paths that she had found when she was younger. She knew the city like the back of her hand, and she also was familiar with the navy and police, and where they usually were posted. With this, she started to scope out the nearby shops, looking for one that maybe the owner had stepped out of to lend a hand with the fires.

It was then that she noticed the owner of a weapons shop had gone out and was helping put out the flames. She also noticed this guy who she had never seen before looking at the flames like he was terrified, but it seemed like he was trying too hard to fit in with the crowd. She smiled on the inside. 'Maybe I'll thank him later.' she though as she looked around, waiting until nobody was watching, or so she thought, and slipped into the shop, making sure to not trip the bell on the door.

It was then that she made her way over to the knife rack, looking at the different points and makes and materials. She couldn't really find anything to her liking, so she just passed them up, and walked over to the register. She noticed that it had a lock on it, and went to work on it, pulling out her lock picking kit, and had it open in about 20 seconds. It popped open, and she quickly started to shove the cash into her duffel bag, trying to not make much noise and keeping a watch on the door..

"Oh no. The horror, how could this happen." Jayce spoke in a loud voice, trying to sound properly horrified. He even flailed his arms around a little bit to emphasize how much this terrible event had influenced him. Well, that is, how much he was pretending that it affected him anyway.

No one seemed to notice it was an act, so obviously his stunning persuasive nature had convinced everyone he was an upstanding citizen and certainly not the fact that everyone was paying attention to the fire. It was a wonder anyone had ever caught him cheating!

Since everyone was busy putting out the fire, apparently they took less notice of the young lady slipping inside one of the burning shops. Since he was fairly sure everyone had already evacuated them, it wasn't hard for Jayce to come to a reasonable conclusion as to why she was entering. "Bingo. Looks like I caught one."

He straightened his frilly hat and manuevered deftly through the crowd of onlookers so he could sneak into the building himself. It was rather hot inside, and he wasn't sure if it was better or worse that he didn't have a shirt for the situation. After he had gotten himself inside - obviously unnoticed, of course, since he was so amazingly skilled - he put on his best saunder, speaking over the crackling flames in a rather unconvincing tone of concern to anyone who might be around. "Gosh, I hope there aren't any people trapped in here. I guess it's a good thing a good samaritan like myself came in to check. Someone could get hurt in all this blaze."

He sure was a nice guy.

Funny story was, this wasn't the first time Tina had been in this shop. She had a plan, and was ready. As soon as she heard that voice, she knew who it was, and that he was obviously not doing a very good job acting like he cared... She quickly grabbed the last bit of the cash, took a 100 beli bill, the biggest one that was in there, and put it back in the register, closed it, zipped her bag up,took one look at the guy and bolted out the back door, jumping over a small table to get the straight shot out.

If there was one thing Tina could boast about, was her ability to run away. Every shortcut and passageway in the city was hers to take advantage of, and believe me, she took advantage of them. She bolted out the door, and back an alleyway, finding a fire escape (heh, irony) and started to climb up it quickly, trying to get to the roof of the three story building.

She was sure that the guy would probably at least try and follow her, and looked back down the escape, looking to see if he was indeed following her. She also caught a gimps of the burning buildings, and felt compelled to throw something at the guy for starting them...Oh well, she would come back in a minuet and help put them out, like she usually did. That way most people wouldn't complain about the loss of Beli, and just be thankful that she helped...at least, that's what she went for in these situations.

Jayce had not the benefit of growing up in Loguetown to help him follow, but he was a pretty fast runner himself. Having also had to use a few alleyway escapes himself, he was generally knowledgeable about how they worked. Still, it was hard to keep the sneaky thief in sight. He contemplated shouting something like 'Stop, thief!', but he had done this to find assistance, not antagonize her by drawing in angry mobs.

He came around a corner and almost got a rock to the face as his quarry decided to try enticing him to stop following. He ducked aside, trying to not let the minor attack cause him to loose her. But she was pretty good at the whole escape thing, and he had to struggle to make up the lost ground. "Woah there, you could hurt someone that way, miss!"

Maybe just following her was a bad idea. If he didn't get her to stop he probably wasn't going to be able to keep sight of her longer than a few more minutes. He just didn't know the city well enough, dang it! Plus, if this kept up for too long he would be winded and it was harder to make a convincing arguement that way. "Ah, my fellow... entrepreneur. Stop for a moment, perhaps we can discuss this in a civilized manner." If she was looking, he gave hr his best winning smile. His teeth were nice and sparkly white too, like a well groomed salesman. "I can assure you I have no relation to any Marines who might object if something went missing from that building during the... accident."

Kristina sighed when the rock missed him, and then started to walk out onto the roof. "Ah, my fellow... entrepreneur. Stop for a moment, perhaps we can discuss this in a civilized manner." Tina rolled her eyes as she stopped. Rather then be chased for ten minuets, she would rather shake the guy here.

"Fine, if you want to talk, make it quick. I'm not in the mood to talk with an arsonist, especially when he sets MY town on fire! I have to go help put those flames out now...." she said, calling him out, and was obviously very impatient about it.

She really did care about the town, but at the same time, she had to make a living too. Stealing was just what she did, and on some small level, the townspeople were at peace with that...as long as it isn't them, and she doesn't take EVERYTHING.

"I can assure you I have no relation to any Marines who might object if something went missing from that building during the... accident." she heard him say, trying to reassure her. "I personally don't care who you are with, you're in my way. Make it quick or leave me alone. she added coldly, already starting to turn around to leave.

Jayce had not been looking forward to chasing the thief all over, so he was glad she was willing to talk to him. He beamed at her, starting to speak before blinking and splaying a hand across his chest. "I'm sorry, me? I most certainly did not set fire to all those buildings, miss. What a callous thing to presume!" He waved his other hand expressively, giving her a wide eyed look to emphasize how honest he was being. Which was very, very honest.

And to be fair, he had not set all the building on fire. Only one of them. That others had caught on fire and perhaps exploded was not, directly, his fault. Blasted sea winds, eh?

After a moment, he shrugged his shoulder, continuing on. He didn't think she would stay all day, so he had to be brief and to the point. "However, I did think it was a good place to find some, ah... people of similar outlooks on life. Seeing as you appear to have skills in freelance wealth redistribution, I thought I would extend an invitation to join my fine crew." He puffed up somewhat importantly, and poked the tip of his has back with another winning grin. All his grins were winners though, of course, so that wasn't saying much. "I am a pirate, you see."

Kristina really wasn't interested in small talk, she just wanted to help put those fires out...and it may have something to do with getting to the other side of that roof, where her stash was hidden...but that was something else entirely. "I am a pirate, you see."

At this, she stopped completely, and did a 180, looking down at him again. "Well, if you put it that way, I guess you could hang around for a little while. We can talk turkey in a while. First things first!" She said as she bolted out of sight for a moment, emptied her bag of money, and came back into view. She quickly descended the stairs, grabbed the guy's arm, and started to drag him at a running pace around the building, grabbing two buckets with her other hand.

She stopped in front of a different building, let go of her prospective captain, and tossed one of the buckets at him. "Here, there is a well right over there, go fill this up. You get to be the runner, and I get to throw the water." she pretty much ordered him, ignoring his plea about not starting the fire completely.

She also noticed that across the street, the main room where she had taken the money from had caught fire well enough. 'Yosh! looks like that will cover for the lost cash. Lucky!' she thought as she waited for the first bucket.

Jayce got a significantly better response than he had been expecting. She was actually paying attention to him now, and interested! Obviously his own charm was greater than he realized. Fancy! As she came back from apparently stashing away her ill-gotten goods, he started talking again. "I'm glad you see it that way, miss... ah what was your naaaa-" He trailed off and changed topic mid-sentence as she dragged him off and he stumbled after. "Wait where are we going?"

Soon enough though, he was back in view of the burning buildings with a bucket thrust into his hands. He scowled at it, then at the thief, obviously not taking on well to being used to ferrying water. Still, he figured if it would get her to cooperate he could at least help a little. After all, the fire 'wasn't his fault', remember? "Eh, alright. I'm going. Up there, you said?" And with that, he hurried over to the indicated well, pumping some water into yon bucket.

It was considerably heavier this way, and he wasn't exactly strong man material. Still, he managed to bring it back without too much stumbling around. For his own strange entertainment, he offered her the water with a nasal tone of voice, like what he figured a stereotypical butler would sound like. "Your water, madam." Smart ass.

Kristina sighed as she tapped her foot and watched him struggle with the water bucket over to her. She popped the empty one up in the air, grabbed the full one, and ran into the building, throwing water on a fire trying to get up a wall.

This went on for another ten minuets, and Kristina had half a house out, when the towns people started to cheer. The marines had finally shown up, and looked well equipped for the job. They quickly set about putting out the fires.

Kristina walked out of the building she was in, wiped the sweat from her brow, and sat down right in the road. "Well, that was exciting...At least these will get put out now." she said. After a minuet or two, she stood back up, "Sooo, looking for a crew? Let's go have a talk, shall we?" she asked, and grabbed him by the hand, and started towing him again. She was excited to have the chance to get out on the open sea, just like her father did when he was her age.

It wasn't long until they could smell the alcohol in the air, and the bar was in site. Kristina towed him inside, then let go, and walked over to a table in the corner, motioning to the bar tender for two beers. "Sooo, about this crew, where does it stand? Any other members? Do we have a ship?" she asked, letting on that she was quite interested.

The marines had not come a moment too soon, for Jayce's arms were getting rather tired from carrying around all this water. He unceremoniously dropped the bucket, shaking his arms and rubbing a particularly sore muscle as he grumbled under his breath.

There was also the problem with the marines. He hadn't actually committed any major crimes and been caught at it... as far as he knew. At least, he hadn't seen any wanted posters up. Maybe it was best to not stick around them anyway, though. He turned to her to wave her away from the fire and authority figures, but she began dragging him off before he could even mention it. "Yeesh, you sure are a bit of a pushy sort, aren't you? I still never got your name, incidentally."

It seemed she was dragging him into a smelly, seedy bar. Wonderful. Maybe this was a traditional pirate hideaway, but that didn't mean he had to like it. He took a long look around the room, clearly somewhat put off. But he finally sat down, getting as comfortable as he could on the probably dirty wooden chair. "Ah, yes. As a matter of fact, I am looking for new crew members. What kind of talents can you bring to bear to make yourself useful? Aside from what we already both know about, of course."

He gestured vaguely to the side with a long pause after she asked the last question. This was the awkward part of being a new pirate, he supposed, and he had to think of how to put it in a favorable light. "Well, with you joining the crew, well. We'll have... you. And me. And there IS a ship." He swiftly moved on, trying to smooth over that part with as much grace is was possible. Which, truth be told, wasn't a whole lot. He was kind of hoping she wouldn't immediately walk away, and he could work his was up from that. "Naturally, it's more of a... temporary vessel, if you catch my drift. I had to make somewhat of a sudden departure from the last island I was on. You understand, I'm sure.

Kristina rolled her eyes as he complained about her. She was excited about finding a captain, and couldn't really help herself. She was an energetic sort, and usually started to get annoying or really fidgety. Oh well, that was who she was.

Anywho, when he reminded her that she had yet to introduce herself, she literally facepalmed, turning to him. "Ah, sorry, my name is Kristina, Inoue Kristina, or 'Tina', for short. May I ask yours?" she asked in return, realizing that she hadn't caught his name either.

She took a sip out of her beer when she got it, and listened to him a bit more, he was wondering what she could do. She smiled and started to rummage through her duffel bag, pulling out a piece of rolled up paper. She then put her bag away, and unrolled the paper, revealing a map of Loguetown. "I made that myself. I'm a professional Navigator. And, like you said, I also am a procurer of rare and expensive things through less than moral methods. May I ask what it is that you do?" she asked, curious about her captain-to-be.

But, when she heard that she was his first recruit, she was a little disheartened. "Well, at least you have a ship. I think I can stick around and help out, at least for right now, anyway. When would you like to leave?" she asked, just happy and wanting to hit the open sea as soon as possible!

Jayce wasn't much for nicknames, so he decided to give her the same benefit of not using them as he expected from her. He nodded thoughtfully at the name, tapping a finger on the table as the barman gave them their beer. He experimentally sipped it, and then set it down, not intending to drink any more of the watery slush. Bleh. "Alright then, Kristina. Name's Jayce Steppet, pleased to make your acquaintance." He didn't really offer her a hand, but he did his best to look friendly.

He glanced at the map and raised his eyebrows, somewhat impressed both at his luck and the helpful map. This would make getting around much easier. A navigator, already! Maybe this would go better than he had hoped. "Not bad, Kristina. Navigator's a good thing to have on a ship, regardless of how big it is." He halfheartedly poked at the mug of swill, giving in a disapproving frown. He was no brewer, but he was sure he could come up with something better than this. "As for me, I dabble in cooking, and I'm not bad in a fight. Preferably when they don't actually see me coming, though."

He considered telling her more, but decided his other 'specialty' was something best talked about when they were actually at sea. Away from ears that might overhear it. No sense giving away a very nice advantage, he figured. "Aaaand, there's something else, but we'll talk about that later, on the ship. I think we should leave as soon as you're ready, on that note. You've probably got some things you don't want to leave behind, so I might as well let you gather them." He began tapping the table again, almost like it was a kind of nervous tick. He didn't know what kind of things she would bring, so he felt like he should set a guideline. "Nothing big, though. Our current ship is... less than robust."

He feigned a small cough.

"Nice to meet you, Jayce." she said, then listened to him talk, telling her about his specialties. A cook, huh? That's good, I love good cooking. And...your other area is what interests me...but, that's for another time, I guess." she said as she downed the rest of her beer, and stood up.

There she stretched a bit, yawning and brushed a little soot off her shorts. "Sooo, I'll meet you at the harbor?" she asked, but didn't wait for an answer. She took off at a run, heading back towards the buildings that were on fire. She had a little something to pick up on her way home.

She noticed that there were still marines around, looking the place over and helping rebuild a little bit. She sighed as she snuck down a back alley, heading towards that building where she had hidden her stash of cash. She quickly ran up the fire escape, heading towards the roof. But, when she got there, she was met with three marines, who happened to find her cash! "No!" slipped out from between her lips, and the marines turned and looked at her.

Well, needless to say, Kristina was NOT getting that cash...

She turned on the spot, and flew down the steps, two of the marines on her tail, and they were blowing whistles, calling for more. "Crap, crap, CRAP!!!" Kristina yelled as she made her way towards the harbor, trying to spot the ship.

Once she spotted it, she ran down the dock yelling, "Set sail!!! set sail now!!!!!" She took off at a full run, jumping into the boat, not even looking or caring what kind it was, just as long as it could get off the dock in about 30 seconds.

Jayce had ambled off to his ship on the harbor, not really having expected there to be any hurried getaway. I mean, she was supposed to be a smooth criminal, right? Who would have thought she'd get caught retrieving her stash. His ridiculous hat was easy enough to spot on the dock, next to their 'ship'.

It was best described as a rowboat with a sail attached to the top of a mast in the middle. There was no fancy pirate flag yet, and it looked to hold two people, or maybe three tops if they were packed like canned fish. The ship was already stocked with some foodstuffs, fortunately, because Jayce had been preparing to leave for the last few days anyway.

In any case, he was somewhat surprised when Kristina came running back and shouting to prepare for sailing. He looked up from untying the rope he had used to anchor the ship to a post on the dock. "What's all the fuss abou-" He broke off as he heard the marine whistles preceding the marines themselves running around the corner, raising up a hullabaloo and pointing at his new crew member. He smacked his hand to his forehead and sighed irritably, but wasted no time getting on board his ship. "I thought you were good at this! Fine way to start your first day on board. Hurry up!"
