A simple passerby to most walked along the the road, his mule and cart making way to the eastern bay, bringing supplies to the wounded if any and food to the hungry. His short ragged blond hair stood in odd directions, and his shoes and clothes showed signs of wear. A vest of brown leather and long pants with holes, some patched some left open were worn without apparent care by the young man. His face showed signs of aging, small patches of dark hair slowly converting the peach fuzz that grew on his face.

His sandals made small crunches on the road as he and his animal trod upon the well beaten path. Nothing was going to ruin his mood today, though the rain had made it difficult to get out lately, he took his chance zealously when the sun rose that morning. Still slightly muddy, the wheels of the cart made good pace all the same. Something in the distance seemed to obscure the strait line the road made on the horizon, and as he grew closer, so did the shape on the road become larger.

He let out a breathe of exasperation as his sight finally was able to discern what it was that lay in the middle of the road. The young mans body was dirty and dry. He obviously was dehydrated, and a wound to his shoulder was patched with little dexterity, and therefore provided little to help. He quickly brought his medical tools from within a small case hidden on board the wagon, tearing open the mans shirt with a razor blade and attempting to disinfect the wound. "Lucky I was here, much longer and this man wouldn't have made it with the amount of blood he lost." The young said to himself, never losing focus on his task.

It took only moments for him to rub the wound down carefully, and find it was not his only injury. The back of the mans head had obviously taken some blunt force, leaving a small cut and a large bruise underneath it. After tending to both he decided it was probably best not to leave the man lying around unconscious. "I guess Jewel will have to carry you," He said, the mules ears perking up at the sound of her name. A small look of indignation seemed to cross her face, but he was sure he imagined it. Dragging the body as best he could to the side of the wagon, he was able to hoist most of the mans upper body onto the cart, letting his feet dangle.

"Water!" He reminded himself, taking a canteen from his side and pouring some into the dark haired ruffians mouth. Hope he wakes up soon... The boy thought.

He was floating in a vast ocean, surrounded on all sides by the clear blue water. The waves were rocking him gently, and the lay back in the boat, relaxing as he gazed at the peaceful scene in front of him. “What a pleasant day…” Soon, dark clouds gathered above and the once calm sea began to churn violently. Jorell grabbed a plank and began to paddle furiously, struggling to keep his boat afloat. Soon, his boat capsized, and he felt himself being pulled deep beneath the ocean depths, the cold water replacing the air that used to reside in his lungs.

Jorell coughed furiously, sputtering some of the water on the wagon bed. As his eyes opened they shut tightly, adjusting to the bright sunlight. “Where’s the ocean…?” Jorell slowly lifted himself up and examined the dry barren landscape he could see from his position in the wagon. “Oh, it was a dream…” Jorell slowly said as he examined his surroundings. He was in some type of wagon. Some of the cool water was clinging to his chin, the rest had been absorbed into his shirt. Jorell looked at his new companion, a young man on the process in transforming into an adult.

“Hello, it appears that I’m in your debt friend.” Joell said, inspecting the bandages that replaced his crude attempts at first aid. He stuck out his hand in gretting, “My name’s Jorell, nice to meet you, Mr.?”

The coughing young man roused himself, the water coming as a shock. The blond boy jumped quickly from his position a few feet back, and watched from afar as the man came to his senses. As many times as he had watched people wake up from injuries to the head, and start the conversation by swinging. Although the man would have a hard time swinging with his arm bandaged and wounded as it was.

After a few seconds of confirming his location, the young man took a more friendly look towards himself, "Hello, it appears that I’m in your debt friend.” Jorell said holding out the hand not tied to a wounded arm. The boy held his ground for a second before reaching forward and embracing his hand. "The name is Garret, just Garret. I used to work for my grandfather, but he passed away awhile ago." he said, turning his gaze towards the sky for a moment, then back at Jorell.

His eyes were now however focused seriously on something else, a large metal protrusion from a mud puddle on the side of the road. The water had mostly dried along the middle, but pooled on the side, and from it stuck the top of a jet black barrel. He moved deftly to the spot and lifted the heavy from the mud and dirt, using both hands to carry it back to the rear of his wagon. "This belong to you?" Garret spoke, his voice carrying a dark undertone as he looked up with shadowed eyes.

“Sorry to about that. I’m sure he would be glad to see you helping out those in need.” Jorell said as Garret’s attention focused on something beyond Jorell’s vision. Seems like a nice kid. Good thing he found me or I'd of died out here. Does good bandaging too. Jorell gingerly touched his wounded shoulder. Still, need to get to a hospital and have a doctor treat this wound.

Jorell sighed and rested his head against the wagon wall as he watched Garret wandered off before picking an object up from the desert floor. When Garret returned he was carrying the object in his hands. “This belong to you?” Jorell looked at the Garret’s face before focusing his attention on the item in his hand. “The cursed gun!?” Jorell exclaimed.

His mind instantly went back to the battle he and been through. Reeve, Death Vine, those children in the town, their dead parents, the countless others who had been killed by the weapon. The gun was in the center of it all. Even though he didn’t believe in such curses that gun had been in the center of too much death for it to be all a big coincidence.

“That gun does strange things to people, don’t touch it!” Jorell yelled as he reached out to snatch the weapon from Garret’s hand, wincing as a sharp pain which originated from his wounded shoulder spread throughout his body. Damn, almost ripped my bandages apart. Gotta be more careful.

Garret pulled back as Jorell's hand reached for the gun, tucking the weapon into the crack of his arm. He eyed Jorell suspiciously, a look of contempt on his face. "I dont like guns, was a gun that took my parents, and my grandparents. You better have a good reason for wanting this gun, or carrying one around for that matter." Garret said, his words where full of passion as if he had burned them into the back of his mind.

It was not far from the truth, as he had replayed what his grandfather told him so many times: "It takes a strong man to wield a sword, and a sharp mind to outsmart the strong. However a weak man can fire a gun and kill them both." The words playing in his mind as clear as if he was standing next to him. This was the truth when it came to the man who took his parents lives, and who ran soon after. His trepidation was clear when it came to people who used guns.

He waited for the mans reply, but instinctively stashed the gun under a blanket in the back of his wagon.

Guess he has problems with guns. Can’t blame him, every other day there’s reports of people who’ve been injured by guns.

Jorell sighed. “From your reaction to guns, guess you’ve had a bad experience with one? Your apprehension is understandable. People with guns do bad things, therefore guns must be bad.” Jorell stared hard into the young man’s face. “Something I’ve come to realize over the years, and something you must understand as well. A gun is an inanimate object, same as a sword, stick, battleship, bow, arrow, and any number of objects that we humans label as weapons. A weapon by itself is incapable of doing anything. It requires direction, a goal, a purpose. These things are transferred to the weapon through its wielder.”

Jorell motioned to the gun, “Guns are just the most advance weapon we have yet designed. Soon something will probably come along and replace them. Same thing happened with rocks, sticks, spears, swords, and bow and arrow."

“The purpose can be either good or bad, or anything in between. Regardless of intentions, anyone who decides wields a weapon must learn how to use it properly, or they will become a danger to themselves and others. One can hardly understand a gun without using it first.” Jorell paused for a moment, “You asked why I carry a gun. What purpose and goal am I directing this metal construct to. Survival. For myself, for others. I chose a gun because that’s the weapon I’m most familiar with, the one I have the most skill with. Had I been better with a sword, bow and arrow, I would have used those, but I’m best with a gun.”

Jorell leaned back and rested his head on the side of the wagon, “With it I can use it to defend others, ensure their survival from those that would do them harm. Because I’ve trained with guns so often, I know their strengths, their limitations. They don’t make someone invincible, or unstoppable. People who don’t realize can be consumed by the gun. Something similar might of happened to the people who stole this gun. A man named Death Vine stole this gun, and he wasn’t able to control it. He went on a murderous killing spree. I managed to bring him down, and I also managed to stop someone else who also wished to use the gun for their own ends.”

Jorell stared at were the gun lay. “A gun that curses its owner, such a thing has no place in the world. I’ll have to break this curse or stash the gun away in a place no one can reach. Such is the duty of anyone who understands and respect such weapons.”
