“WHAT! How could I lose!?” roared a drunken patron at Blunt Hoof Pub. A man with shoulder length rumpled white hair and a twinkle in his eye shrugged. There was a devilish grin plastered on his face as he grabbed the wad of money on the table and shoved the winnings into his coat. “Well friend, you lost because a four of a kind beats a flush.” The drunken loser shoved the table over, “You yeller belly cheating snake! Gimme mah money!” The man reached back to punch the old man but Jorell caught his fist in mid swing. “Hey, you lost fair and square.” Jorell calmly stated, “Leave now, I need to talk with Mr. Rosetti.” The drunken patron shook his arm free and drunkenly stumbled out of the bar.

Jorell placed the table upright and took a seat opposite of Rosetti. “Why do you always insist in meeting me in this bar? No matter. My father said you wished to speak with me.” Mr. Rosetti nodded, “This bar is full of drunk fools ready to pay for my rent. Anyway, I heard you were about to head out. Trying to become an honored brewmaster or something?” Jorell silently nodded. “Well then, how are you going to get travel money? Join the marines? Become a pirate? Bwahahahaha” Jorell shrugged, “Become a pirate? The title of honored brewmaster is not for someone who by their actions would strike fear into normal people. The marines are no better. Half of the officers on this island are corrupt in one way or another.” Jorrell tilted his head to where a marine officer sat. Next to him where women, food, booze, and a local crime boss. “I don’t seek to affiliate with such a useless organization.” Mr. Rosetti shrugged, “What will you do then?” Jorrell pointed to a corner of the bar. Along the wall were various bounty posters. “You’ll bounty hunt then? Bwahahahahaha! Come on boy! Your gun skills might be better than the average bumpkin, but you still have a long way to go!” Jorell shrugged, “It’s a simple job. Bounties are plentiful and I may dishout justice to those that deserve it. Besides, bounty hunting will help hone in my marksmen ship. A wise man once said, Marksmenship is like a high maintence woman. If you don't spend time with it everyday, it'll leave you.”

Mr. Rosetti took a swig of beer he was holding before bursting out laughing. “Bwahahahaha! You still remember that eh? Alright, here’s a gift. I have an acquaintance on gunsmoke island. If you go and meet him I’m sure he’ll help you out. Only one ship heads for gunsmoke island every month and it heads out 2 days from now. I’ll put in a good word for you with the captain, but you’ll have to prove your worth to go.” Jorell stroked his chin thoughtfully, “Prove my worth?” Mr. Rosetti nodded, “Yep, he only lets amazing people get on his ship, that way he can say he sailed with greatmen in the ocean. Good for business you know. Anywho you said you would bounty hunt right? I’m sure bringing in a high bounty will show your worth.” Jorell stood up and bowed. "Thank you, I will always remember the lessons you taught me, teacher.” Jorell then walked over to the bounty wall and pulled the poster with the largest bounty down. “Well, lets see what we have here…”

The frayed poster that was ripped from the wall depicted something unusual. Dirty blond hair protruded out from underneath a mask that only half covered his face. Designs of plants and vines covered the mans visible arm in ink, giving him the appearance of a trellis covered in vines. The bounty was unusually high for a simple thief, though in the corner of the photo the gleamed the holster of a gun with the symbol of a rose imbued.

Several other bounties were scattered across the board, ranging from a large brute with a battle axe, to a petite woman carrying a whip. None of the bounties however were as high as the one taken. After the poster was taken from the wall several onlookers from the bar began to stare at Jorell.

"You know who's poster that is don't ya? That's Jack Vine the dead eye! Only a week ago now that he robbed a collector of the gun you see there." An older man with a ragged beard and several buttons missing from his leather vest sat next to the board. He spoke again, "The Marines have sent over 20 people to retrieve the gun, not one of them have come back." He looked back down at his drink. "That gun don't need anyone to aim it, it kills for itself. Nobody been able to keep it for longer then a month before they turn up mysteriously dead. I think its the gun, its cursed I tell ya."

"Shut yer trap old man! We all know yer full of shit, drinking every night made you more stupider then a post." A burly fellow from across the bar yelled, sending a wooden mug sailing across the room and into the wall nearby. The splinters bounced off the wall and hit the old man. Everyone in the bar had begun to laugh before he hastily got up off the stool and left the bar, stumbling onto the dirty ground on the way out.

BANG. The gunshot rang throughout the ears of the bar folk, sending the people into silent shock. The perpetrator could be seen at the doorway having had walked in moments after the old man fell out. He wore a black leather jacket with the front undone, and a black undershirt with several things written on it in white paint. His pants only went down to about his knees before cutting off, revealing strong legs with tattoos on them though indescribable because of how hairy they were.

The man walked forward seemingly unaffected by the stares he was receiving from the majority, those who did know him simply turning away. He stopped next to Jorell, looking down on the poster he was holding. "You sure you can handle this on your own kid?" His voice was old and raspy, which did not reflect his looks. Late 30's at most, a beard of bristly brown hair was on his chin.

Jorell carefully studied the bounty poster burning the image into this mind. An intricate floral design on his arm and that half mask that he wore help to paint an aura of mystery about the man. Jorell looked under the photo for the description. "...Jack Vine...noted theif...armed and dangerous..." Jorell murmered to himself before losing himself in his thoughts. This much beli for a thief? I wonder what he stole.

As if he read his mind one of the bars patrons answered him. "You know who's poster that is don't ya? That's Jack Vine the dead eye! Only a week ago now that he robbed a collector of the gun you see there." Jorell looked back at the photograph, this time paying close attention the picture of the gun. Jack Vine the dead eye? Guess that explains the tattoos on his arm. Is that the gun he stole? It has a curious insignia on it.

"The Marines have sent over 20 people to retrieve the gun, not one of them have come back." He looked back down at his drink. "That gun don't need anyone to aim it, it kills for itself. Nobody been able to keep it for longer then a month before they turn up mysteriously dead. I think its the gun, its cursed I tell ya." Jorell shook his head and shrugged. “Curses, bad luck, I don’t have time for such backwards superstitions.” He murmured quietly. "Still, that does make things more interesting. Now, where should I start hunting for this guy?" As Jorell contemplated his search route one of the patrons stumbled out the door.

BANG! The loud gunshot that rang out caught his attention. What was that? Jorell thought to himself. He turned and watched as a hairy legged individual walked into the pub. Jorell had never laid eyes on him before. Did he just shoot that man?Jorell wondered silently to himself. The reactions of the patrons was not lost upon him either.Looks like some of the people here are spooked by him. I’ll have to stay on my guard. Jorell watched as the man made a beeline towards him. After glancing at the bounty poster in his hand the man asked in a surprisingly raspy voice "You sure you can handle this on your own kid?" Looking at the older man Jorell calmly responded, “Yes, I’m quite capable of handling a thief. Who are you? More importantly, did you shoot that man?”

“Yes, I’m quite capable of handling a thief. Who are you? More importantly, did you shoot that man?” The young man said staring hard into his eyes like so many had before. Though his intent was not one of blood lust or pride, but perhaps something far more important.

"Killem? Bahaha dont get your panties in a bunch, I just scared the ugly fella. Not to mention he was pissin all over the road and..." He stopped himself from continuing and brought his point back. "Whoa whoa, a simple thief? So your man enough to take down a mass murderer? Most people wouldn't glance at that poster again after seeing his name on it." He said, snatching the poster from Jorell's hands. He began to look over the poster for a moment, burrowing his eyebrows inn concentration.

He neared the bottom of the page, "Oh, no wonder your so jolly about your new bounty. This here is an old printing!" He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. It was folded small enough to neatly fit in his pocket, and when undone was the size of a bounty poster. This poster held the same picture, though little else was the same.

Along the top of the poster ran his name: "The Death Vine" to which people in the bar began to approach from all sides. The mans wanted list has increased dramatically, along with a list of islands and towns he had been to. Less then a 5% survival rate of all the marines and or bounty hunters that had approached him, and even more disturbing were the victims accounts of the battle.

His bounty had been doubled, a special gold ink was laden on it signed from the Marines Justice Department. This poster was a priority to the government, though the Shichibukai had more important matters to take care of. The people around settled back into their seats quickly, after he shooed them away from his poster and tucked it back into his pocket.

"You know why they call him the Death Vine right? Its cause wherever he goes he leaves a trail of dead bodies, animals and humans alike. And every time they think they have got him, he slips away into the forest or other." He continued, checking Jorell's eyes for a sign of weakness, or arrogance.

"This bounty poster was printed yesterday in the Marine HQ on the north bay. But while I was there I heard a call come in about sightings of dead animals appearing on the east shore." He said, hinting as to what he was about to embark on.

"Killem? Bahaha dont get your panties in a bunch, I just scared the ugly fella. Not to mention he was pissin all over the road and..." He stopped himself from continuing and brought his point back.

Well, that answers one question I suppose. Jorell thought to himself. The man is not a murder and he seems friendly enough. The question still remains why is he here and why does he seem to know so much regarding Jack Vine the Dead Eye. "Whoa whoa, a simple thief? So your man enough to take down a mass murderer? Most people wouldn't glance at that poster again after seeing his name on it." While Jorell was considering the new arrivals objective the man proceeded to snatch the paper from Jorell’s hands. “Impatient are we? And what do you mean mass murderer?”

After reading the page the man exclaimed, "Oh, no wonder your so jolly about your new bounty. This here is an old printing!" The man then pulled a square piece of paper from his jacket. He unfolded it to reveal a bounty poster. Although the pictures were the same the new bounty poster contained a wealth of new information.

Jorell carefully scanned the wanted poster. There were numerous changes compared to the previous poster. First and foremost was the name printed on the poster. It no longer read Jack Vine the Dead Eye but was instead labeled The Death Vine. Apparently the thief had been doing quite the bit of traveling around since the last bounty poster. A death toll accompanied the names of the places he had visited. Among the death were some marines and a few known bounty hunters. The poster also contained a description of the The Death Vine as well as some firsthand accounts of the atrocities the man had committed.

“They doubled his bounty…?” Jorell muttered, quite surprised that the man had caused this much trouble since he had stolen the gun. Finally the golden signature of the Marine’s Justice Department caught Jorell’s attention. That mark, it’s reserved for only the people of great interest to the government. This guy’s more dangerous then I thought…

"You know why they call him the Death Vine right? Its cause wherever he goes he leaves a trail of dead bodies, animals and humans alike. And every time they think they have got him, he slips away into the forest or other.
" He continued, checking Jorell's eyes for a sign of weakness, or arrogance.

"This bounty poster was printed yesterday in the Marine HQ on the north bay. But while I was there I heard a call come in about sightings of dead animals appearing on the east shore."

Jorell sat down and interlaced his fingers together, contemplating the new information.“So he’s reportedly hiding in east shore? It’s a decent hiding place. Not much traffic goes by passes through that area. It also lies by the ocean giving him an easy escape route. Haven’t been there to many times myself, but I do recall a wooded area there. Death Vine attacking marines and bounty hunters I understand but animals…not quite sure why he’d kill them. Leaving a trail of dead bodies like that is just asking to be discovered. Not something I would expect to see from a man whose suppose to be keeping a low profile.”

Jorell turned and focused his gaze on the new arrival. “Seeing as you were granted access to the Military Headquarters it would be safe to assume you are affiliated with them in some way? You’re not dressed as a marine so perhaps you’re a bounty hunter of sorts? You carry the updated bounty poster so I assume you’re going after him. It is curious that you would come here first. Those that recognize you show you a mixture of fear and respect. Still, someone of your caliber coming here and revealing intel to potential competition. Not something one would do…unless they were looking for assistance.” Jorell mused, stroking his chin thoughtfully.

“No matter. Jack Vine or Death Vine, his name is of little consequence for the mission is still the same. He has in his possession a supposedly cursed gun which he is using in a murder spree. I will not have scum like him running around the island endangering it's citizens.”

Jorell stood up and headed towards the doorway. "I will head to the eastern shore and track him down. We shall then see whose skills are superior. After all, its impossible to gauge a persons level of strength without seeing it for yourself first hand. If you want, you can come along and see for yourself the fall of Death Vine. If I fall to him, you can clean up the mess. Either way, his tale ends here."

"Ive been asking myself the same questions. A mass murderer wont be running for long leaving bread crumbs like that for the Marines. Besides everyone knows if your going to hide out its best to dock in Osula. This man aint thinking straight, he dont have a pattern and he has yet to make any demands." The man said, "Oh an the name is Reeve kid, haven't seen you around here before," he noticed while eying his gun.

“Seeing as you were granted access to the Military Headquarters it would be safe to assume you are affiliated with them in some way? You’re not dressed as a marine so perhaps you’re a bounty hunter of sorts? Jorell asked.

"It wouldn't be safe to assume that at all... Matter fact I don't deal with marines except to collect my rewards, they stink of corruption. Your second guess is right though, been a bounty hunter for the last 9 years, ever since my brother died." He said his eyes showing no sign of sadness at the mention of him. The people in the bar had for the most part continued to become rowdy, talking loudly again and drinking.

"Dont flatter yourself kid, I just needed someone to carry his body back after I kill him." He smiled wryly at his own comment. "If you do fall to him, be sure to hide your gun. We all know how he likes to stealem."

With this he too stood up and walked towards the door, plotting the route in his mind to the east bay. He knew it would not be hard to find Jack, but taking down the animal would be something different. Little did they know it, but the gun in which they followed was not to be trifled with.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And in the stillness of the night the cracking branches under the man clad in white gave a clear marker of where he was. Weaving in between the trees like a drunkard, his arm slung lazily holding the ornate gun. Some birds leaped from a nearby tree, taking off into the sky quickly. BANG! BANG, BANG! And as sound of the gun echoed through the forest, the three birds which flew so freely before, dropped to the ground unmoving.
The mask covered the mans face, and onward he walked stumbling every now and then over a log or getting tangled in vines. His arms and legs were covered in a mixture of dirt and blood, though none of his own. The sky above him began to become thunderous as a storm moved in from the south, encompassing the greater bottom half of the island and moving fast. The rain could be heard making its way across the tops of the trees, dancing rain drops fettered the leaves making a soft hum.
The Death Vine approaches another city... He thought to himself. I wonder If there will be any survivors... His expression concealed beneath the mask.
“Reeve? I’m Jorell.” Jorell, simply stated as the pair headed towards the eastern coast. After waving goodbye to his mentor Jorell left the pub and followed the dusty trail eastwards. The hum of the town comprised of hundreds of people going about their daily business gradually faded away until only the sound of the wind sweeping its way across the dry landscape remained to serenade their journey.
The buildings that once surrounded them in a mazelike network had given way to a dry, barren landscape. Here and there one could see the occasional plant life, be it a short desert bush or a tall cactus. A pair of bright red birds flew past the sky, the only thing that stood out against the pale blue backdrop.
After about an hour or so a dark mass could be seen gathering at the southern horizon. The mass continued to grow until it filled the sky. Omminmus thunder could be heard coming from up above. “Looks like it’s going to rain.” Jorell said. A few minutes later the first tentative drops fell from the clouds; a prelimnary scout of the main force. Jorell wiped the drop from where it had landed on his shoulder. “Let’s pick up the pace; we should be able to reach the eastern outpost before it really lets loose.”
As the light grew darker, hastened by the thickening clouds the eastern town came into view. The smallest town on the island, the place barely had enough builds to upgrade it from an outpost status. Nothing about the eastern town mad it stand out besides its close proximity to the ocean and small forest it had growing near its borders.
The pair managed to take shelter under a building as the sky began to unleash their watery assualt on the ground below. "This place hasn't changed much since I've been here. Where shall we start looking?" Jorell asked.
"Nothin ever changes around here, makes me sick. But I reckon more than anything that gun slingers hidin away in those trees. Only place on the island where anything grows." Reeve said, pointing ahead at the small patch of forest, easily discernible from the rest of the bland environment. The storm clouds overhead had been gathering for a while, sending chilling gusts from the ocean over the island.
"But before you jump into the lions den, let me give you a tip: Watch your back. Just know that however good you think you are, this guy has managed to take out waves of marines. Hes proven himself to be more than any regular hunter could handle." The awning of the building reverberated against the rain as his words were quickly drowned out.
Reeve looked around the town, and began to notice something particular whilst staring hard at a window. All of the windows had been drawn shut, no light was being emitted through the doors. The chimney too remained unfettered with smoke, giving the cold silent melancholy a chance to wash over him. "Something aint right." Reeve said aloud, looking around in the dark night for some sign of life.
"But before you jump into the lions den, let me give you a tip: Watch your back. Just know that however good you think you are, this guy has managed to take out waves of marines. Hes proven himself to be more than any regular hunter could handle." Jorell nodded silently. For this man to survive for as long as he had, something must be different about him. Jorell began to scan the environment, his eyes on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary. The town seemed as the barren landscape. The streets were empty and none of the towns few buildings seemed open.
Hmm, even this places sparse population…where is everyone? As the temperature dropped Jorell shivered a bit. He focused his attention on the buildings. No lights could be seen. More importantly no smoke was coming from the chimmy’s. “No smoke? That’s odd. Wild West Town gets cold at night, and with this rain coming in…why are no fireplaces lit?”
"Something aint right.
" Reeve said. Looks like he’s noticed it too. Jorell’s hands hovered over his pistols, ready to whip them out at a moment’s notice. His eyes scanned the surroundings, ready to pick up on any movement. The accounts of the bloodshed the man had left behind rose to the front of his mind. If those accounts were true and that man had arrived at the town first then there was a chance that they were the only ones left among the living. Jorell pushed the thoughts out of his mind and turned his attention to the problem at hand, locating Death Vine.
“Doesn’t seem that anyone is around here. It’s too cold for a fireplace not to be lit. No one’s come out to greet us either.” Jorell stated calmly. “If Death Vine has been here, the townsfolk might all be dead. In that case we should proceed as if he’s still here.” Jorell indicated the building that was right behind them.
“We should sweep the building. If its clear, we'll turn on all the lights, start up the fireplace and leave. Death Vine isn’t one to leave survivors. If he’s here, he’ll come to finish off the survivors.” The clouds above groaned. Jorell waited for the thundering to die down before he continued. “If no one enters the building we'll move on the the next one until we've swept the entire town."
“We should sweep the building. If its clear, we'll turn on all the lights, start up the fireplace and leave. Death Vine isn’t one to leave survivors. If he’s here, he’ll come to finish off the survivors.” Jorell said, the thunder reproaching as though in warning. Reeve entered the building, searching the walls and cabinets for tools to start a fire. He struck the match against his leg, bringing it to the lamp before dispersing of it. The fire quickly illuminated the room, casting dancing shadows along the walls and floor.
As the light fell upon the dining room table, Reeve's intuition proved correct. The bodies of a family lay sprawled across the table, still set with food. Blood stains now covered portions of the wooden top and floor. He took a moment to balance himself before speaking to Jorell, "So it looks like gun wounds, a bullet for each. Luckily he hit the heart, none of them suffered very long." He finished, doing a quick once over of the house after checking the people.
"I suppose on to the next house..." reeve said, motioning for them to leave with a disconsolate voice. He only hoped the buildings to come were not as cryptic, though his cold eyes cast a indifferent gaze upon the bodies of the dead.
Jorel entered the house. The first thing that he noticed was the an unfamiliar smell. It was a mixture of sweet and pungent. Jorell didn't like the idea of strange repugnant particles floating up his nose. As Reeve lit the lamp the gruesome view came into focus. The gruesome sight made Jorell’s stomach heave involuntarily. This…is…horrible… Jorell took a moment to steady himself. Focus, I have to focus. After after a few deep breaths his stomach stopped jumping. The order was much stronger in the dining room. The stench of death mixed with the rice the family was eating. Jorell’s stomach started to heave again.
Focus…FOCUS…I’ve got to remain focused. If I don’t want to end up dead I have to use this information Think…what does this scene tell you? After taking another couple of deep breaths Jorell’s pulse settled down. His gaze began to survey the scene with renewed vigor, his expression returned to his standard poker face. When he spoke, only the faintest hint of his previous affliction remained.
“All the bodies are at the table. The door lock doesn’t seem to be tampered with. Death Vine probably just let himself in. These people were used to having company over.”
Jorell then turned his attentions to the bodies. He scanned each of them, making a mental picture of each one. His gaze settled on the small child. "So it looks like gun wounds, a bullet for each. Luckily he hit the heart, none of them suffered very long." Reeve’s voice snapped Jorell out of his stupor. “Yeah. three shots and each of them through the heart.” Jorell examined the walls of the room. “There’s no other bullet holes. He seems to be a very accurate shot. Fast too, since none of the family have gotten out of their seats. I’ll check this room out.”
Jorell stepped out of the dining room, glad for any excuse to escape the blood bath. He had heard of mass murders before but the term never resonated with him. Now he dwelled on it as he looked at the family portrait. Mass murder…Killing sprees…is this what they are comprised out of? Families such as these? Is this what we’re going to encounter in the other buildings? Jorell looked at the picture frame. A mother, father, and daughter, all smiling, all happy, dressed in their finest clothing. It seemed like a world apart when compared with their silent, dead bodies.
"I suppose on to the next house..."
Reeve said. Jorell nodded and left the house. A cool gust of wind washed over him, wiping the foul odor off his clothes. Jorell then headed to the next building scanning his surroundings as he went. He pushed open the door with his foot, his hands gripping his pistol handles firmly. The image of the dead girl seared into his memory. He would eliminate this man, no matter what.
The dark setting had truly set Reeve into a mood. Something he himself had to instill years ago in order to work without the nagging thought of bloodshed. Any and all memories that he had of bodies, and of his brother had been erased in this moment, or better yet simply stashed away where another could not see it. His hot breathe steamed away into the night air as he trudged on to the next building.
"I take it you haven't seen much combat, or many bodies. Don't misunderstand, its not exactly a bad thing. But in our line of work, you gotta break through barriers normal people cant. You have to learn to block out the evil, otherwise it will eat you alive." Reeve said, speaking from the heart for a moment, his experience filtering his thoughts into cohesive lessons. "But most of all, when you shoot, and you do kill... Make sure you know how to handle it. Ive seen men break down after killin, not an easy sight."
The building they came up to next was very old, the door frame was splintered leading up to a bent awning. The rain poured off the side awkwardly, making a large mud puddle near the entrance. Reeve tried to open the door, but a thick padlock could be heard restraining the door form the other side. He looked around warily for any windows or other to enter through, but the building was sealed up tight. He walked back up to the wooden door, before raising his leg for a kick.
"Been a while since I did this, stand back..."
Boom. He slammed his leg against the door, but it remained firm. "Ahemm..." He cleared his throat awkwardly, looking over at Jorell. He lifted his leg again and kicked, letting out a groan.
The Door flew off its hinges, splintering in several directions from the force. Without warning a high pitched screaming sound filled his ears. Reeve quickly looked around for the source of the disturbance, his hairs standing on end as the adrenaline pumped through his body. With unexpected dexterity he managed to reach back and behind his shirt, releasing a large double barrel shot gun from his waist.
He quickly slung the gun towards the noise, and was shocked at what he saw. In the corner of the room curled up in a small group, lay 12 or so kids together, holding onto each other in the darkness. Reeve quickly lowered his weapon, "Shhhhh! Quite!" Reeve said loudly. The screams had no doubt rang throughout the town, he only hoped it had not reached their enemy. The children quickly gained a quite whimpering composure, leaving the two of them standing with a new problem on their hands.
"I take it you haven't seen much combat, or many bodies. Don't misunderstand, its not exactly a bad thing. But in our line of work, you gotta break through barriers normal people cant. You have to learn to block out the evil, otherwise it will eat you alive." Reeve said. Jorell thought back to some of the old war veterans that used come into his father’s restaurant. They didn’t say much of anything. All they did was sit at their usual table and drink. Jorell always wondered what people could experience to drive themselves into that state. Now he knew. Such horrors, no wonder people tried to drown away their sorrows.
Block out the evil? How am I supposed to do that? The images…Damn, can’t dwell on them now. I’ve got to focus on the task at hand. Jorell shook his head, trying to return his thoughts on the task at hand. “But most of all, when you shoot, and you do kill... Make sure you know how to handle it. Ive seen men break down after killin, not an easy sight." That was one thing Jorell knew he wouldn’t have a problem with. In fact the anticipation of eliminating this man, the excitement, the passion; these feelings gave him pause. Feeling show much joy over this hunt, I have to watch myself. I have to be careful that I don’t fall down a dark path…
Jorell pulled out his pistols and waited for Reeve to kick down the door. THUD. The door rattled but held firm. “Don’t hurt yourself.” Jorell said wryly as he braced himself for what lay within. The next kick sent the door flying to the ground. No sooner than the door hit ground than a high pitch scream let out. Death Vine! Was the first thought that sprang into Jorell’s mind. He aimed his pistols at the source almost firing until his ears picked out several voices that compromised the scream. As his eyes adjusted to the dark interior of the building Jorell’s eyes picked out a shivering mass clumped in the corner.
Jorell eyes scanned over the group, picking out the individual members from the mass. Two…four…eight…twelve…? Jorell quietly holstered his weapon and looked around. A scream like that in a normal town would have piqued the interest of its neighbors, but in a lifeless town like this the sound carried for miles. If Death Vine was still around then he most certainly would have heard the sound. Damn. This is bad. If Death Vine’s still here then he knows our location. It’ll be too hard to fight and defend these kids at the same time. I have to think of a plan.
Jorell smiled at the kids and spoke in a soothing voice, “Hello kids. Don’t be scared, we’re here to help you.” Jorell turned around, looking outside the building for any sign of life. For the moment it seemed as though the coast was clear. “Kids, we’re going to get you out of here, but we need some information first. Can you tell us what happened here?”
A small boy in the back with short red hair and freckles, made his way to the front of the group. He looked a bit older then the others and had recovered a little quicker from the shock. His wide eyes looked towards both of theirs, scanning them with insecurity.
"Are you here to help us?" he asked, his voice unable to hold a firm tone and cracking under his emotions. Reeve looked down at him for a moment. "Ugh.. No I aint here to help ya kid... I'm here to take down a murderer. You all better stay here and hope he doesn't know where that scream came from." It was obvious how awkward the child was making him feel, apparently having very little previous contact with them.
The other houses light cast a rectangle the size of a door into the small storage room, giving just enough light for him to see around inside. Reeve turned around quickly and stood looking out into the darkness. The houses lights were shining, but they had yet to see him around the town. Hopefully he would make his appearance soon... Or perhaps...
"Oh shit... Jorell we gotta get out of here, he aint coming to the houses cause hes movin on, he never stayed in one area remember?" Reeve said, picking up the door and placing it by the frame. They had to hurry and lock these kids back up, before it was too late. "If we are lucky he'll still be on the road, but where gonna have to move fast." Reeve finished wondering how they would do it.
As far as he knew they only had one way of transportation on Wild Wild West.
