While he was born and raised on Bausyer island, he did not tend to play along with the spirit of competition that infused the island.

Or rather, he did, but he was a prolific cheater. He was probably disqualified from more contests than he won because of this, but given the variety available and number of people that participated and were also disqualified for cheating, he was able to flit from one to the other without getting a global ban.

At least, he thought so. Eventually he was caught cheating one too many times and enough of the judges put together that this was a habitual offender. It was not that he was clumsy and got caught so much because of it - he just did it for far too long. And thus he was barred from any of the offical contests.He tried to slip in numerous times after that, but his picture was posted at every entry location now.

He had no criminal bounty since cheating was simply a disqualifying charge, but no one wanted him anymore.Angry and frustrated, he decided after a time that perhaps living in a lawful society just wasn't working. Everyone here knew him and that he cheated, thus he was locked out of the main thrill he had before of trying to get away with it. He began to take up thievery as a new way to seek it. He became fairly good at it over time.

The decision to become a pirate was spontaneous. The local marines had captured an unlucky band of pirates, and their loot had been confiscated pending a categorization of the contents. He had snuck into the base to liberate some of that for himself. After all, no one was using it anymore! He had found among loot a nice set of fancy silk pants and a feathered hat that he thought he might like for himself when he spotted a locked chest that piqued his curiosity.

Given he had picked locks before, it was not terribly difficult to open it. Inside, he found a solitaty, ugly looking fruit. Now, enough people came to the island for there to be rumors of Devil Fruits around, so he had an inkling of what it was. He pocketed the fruit and left with the clothes and a few bits of treasue he could carry.Unfortunately, he was seen by marines on the way out. Though he managed to escape, it was obvious he had stolen something.

He went into hiding for days, but fortunately for him no one knew there had been a devil fruit in the treasure or they might not have relaxed their search. He decided that with his new, precious fruit the island was no longer big enough for him. He decided the stolen clothes would do well enough for a distinctive pirate look, and one night he stole a small ship, heading out into the sea. Later that night, he resolved to taste his new fruit...
