[10:00 A.M., a man and woman arrive in Sapporo, Japan after a short flight from Saga. The two gather their belongings and await a cab to bring them to their new apartment. They are Jirou Saionji and Saya Torashima, boyfriend and girlfriend, who have decided to move up North since both had been hired on for new jobs in the area and decided it’d be best to relocate than commute from Saga all the way to Sapporo. Jirou is a tall young man in his late 20s. Though not strong in build, he is toned and physically fit. His shaggy black hair drapes down over his eyes, which he has to brush out of his field of vision every few minutes. He stares out the window in anticipation, his green eyes reflected in the glass. Saya, plays with her highlighted hair, blonde with streaks of pink that only reaches to her ear lobes. She is a petite young woman with rectangular glasses, behind which are two hazel eyes. Both partners are wearing thick black jackets due to the cold weather in Sapporo. The day is December 19th, only a few days before Christmas. Many families they knew celebrated it despite being Shinto, but Jirou and Saya were born in Japanese families who were raised Christian from the time following the arrival of Francis Xavier, and were obligated to take part in festivities. The cab finally stops in front of a modest looking apartment building. The two exited and brought their luggage up to their room, which was surprisingly large for most Japanese apartment complexes. The room has a small kitchen complete with a dining area, a bathroom located on the eastern side of the room, lying to the right of the bedroom, which was probably the second largest room in the place next to the living room. A couch laid against the right-hand wall, parallel to the television, an old model that was fated to be sold or smashed depending on Jirou’s mood. Jirou comically drops his bags, shambles into the bedroom and falls backwards onto the bed.]

Jirou: Finally! Rest!

Saya: Come on, Jirou, it wasn’t that bad.

[He crawls under the sheets, covering his head. His voice is muffled, but can be heard by Saya.]

Jirou: I’ll be staying here for a while.

Saya: No you won’t.

[Saya forcefully drags him out of the bed and moves back into the living room, Jirou weakly groaning. After coercing Jirou for a while longer, he finally summons the drive to actually put his stuff away. After the work is done, Saya asks him to do more.]

Saya: I need you to go and find a new TV for the living room. This simply won’t do.

Jirou: Yes, your highness…

[Saya gets angry as Jirou heads out the door.]

Saya: WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU…!!?

[The door closes behind Jirou as Saya’s words become unintelligible. Jirou walks around for a while, unsure if he’s even heading in the right direction. He spots something moving in his peripheral. He turns slowly, as if to spot whatever was there, only to find nothing. He shrugs, turning to resume walking when he hits something hard and falls back into the snow. Dazed, he shakes off the confusion as he hears someone speaking. He looks up to find a tall young man standing over him, no older than Jirou himself. The man is smiling cheerfully as he extends his hand out to help Jirou to his feet.]

???: Sorry ‘bout that. I guess I shoulda’ watched where I was going.

Jirou: No problem.

[He finally looks squarely at the young man. He is larger than Jirou, standing a towering six feet six inches tall. His physical appearance is heavily built, with arms large enough to strangle a bear, and powerful legs to fell trees. His light brown hair and blue eyes give him away as a foreigner, along with his moderately colored skin. Unlike Jirou, he doesn't wear a coat, but a short-sleeved shirt and cargo shorts, as if the weather doesn't faze him.]

Jirou: You’re a foreigner, aren't you?

Fred: Why yes I am! Name’s Frederick Rupert, but you can call me Freddie or Fred if you like.

Jirou: Fred it is. So you’re American?

Fred: Nah, Canadian.

Jirou: Should have guessed.

Fred: Why?

Jirou: Never mind.

[He pauses.]

Jirou: So why are you here in Sapporo? Vacationing?

Fred: You could say that. You live here?

Jirou: Yeah, but me and my girlfriend just moved here.

Fred: Oh really? How’s that going?

Jirou: I've been sent on an errand already. I have to find a new TV since the one in the apartment is complete shit. Too old and too small.

Fred: Ah, I see what you mean. I’ll go with you then. It’s always better when you have company.

Jirou: Uh, thanks, Fred. But I don’t want to waste your ti…

[Fred seizes Jirou and begins walking with him.]

Fred: Nonsense! You’re not wasting my time at all. Let’s see what we can find!

[Fred and Jirou look all over for a new TV, finally settling on a 42 inch Sony Bravia. The whole time, Fred’s stomach rumbles like a small earthquake. To thank Fred for coming with him, Jirou invites him for some ramen. Only, things become a tad hectic. Fred begins to eat bowl, after bowl, after bowl of ramen, not stopping to even breathe. The employees are astonished and dare not refuse Fred another bowl. He finally stops, realizing how many bowls he downed and politely sets down his final bowl and bows in thanks for the food. Jirou is aghast at how much the meal costs, but sighs and pays with his credit card. As the two leave, Fred looks a tad guilty and stops for a moment.]

Fred: I’m sorry.

[Jirou is caught off guard by Fred’s apology.]

Jirou: You’re sorry? For what?

[He plays it off. Fred continues.]

Fred: You know. I’m sorry about what happened back there. I forgot to tell you about my ‘condition’. I have a metabolism three times faster than other people.

Jirou: The red shirt explains everything.

Fred: What?

Jirou: Nothing.

Fred: Anyway, I have to eat far more than others to get enough nutrients. It was irresponsible of me to forget that.

Jirou: Relax. It was just a bit of money. I’m sure you can pay me back sometime.

Fred: Alright. That sounds good.

Jirou: Well, I better be getting back to Saya. I hope to see you again, man.

Fred: Yeah, the same here. Take it easy, Jirou.

Jirou: Later, Fred.

[The two part ways, with Jirou finally returning to the apartment. He tells Saya about Fred, his new friend. Saya expresses joy at the thought of Jirou beginning to settle in already. But all Jirou can think about is whether he’ll meet up with Fred again. Thinking back to their parting, he remembered hearing that distinct rumble from Fred’s stomach, as if all that food didn’t register to him. Jirou thought hard…Fred’s face was not filled with guilt, but discomfort. But why? How could this one man eat so much and yet still hunger for more?]

[Jirou returns home with the television, which takes some lifting along with Saya to get up the stairs and into their room. Saya interrogates Jirou on the way up.]

Saya: Where the Hell were you?! Was it THAT difficult to find a fucking television?

Jirou: No, I met someone today who helped me out. A foreigner.

Saya: Oh?

[She says inquisitively.]

Saya: What's her name?

Jirou: Her? No no no, it was a guy...

[Saya stops.]

Saya: I...never knew you swung both ways...

Jirou: IT'S NOT LIKE THAT!!!

[He shouts back to the mischevious giggle of Saya.]

Saya: So, what's "his" name?

Jirou: Fred. Fred Rupert.

Saya: What an odd name.

Jirou: He's a nice guy, you'd like him.

Saya: I'm sure, he seems to have left a good impression on you.

Jirou: Yeah...

[The two finally get the TV settled into the room, taking a minute or two to plug in the wires. Saya immediately steals the television away with a show she enjoys, snuggling close to Jirou.]

Saya: I'm glad we made the decision to move. It'll be fun getting to know everyone.

Jirou: Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

[The night continues on calmly, until it comes time for bed. Jirou and Saya prepare for much more before turning down the lights and leaving much up to imagination. The morning after, Jirou wakes to search out a place to have breakfast, having not stocked the cabinets and fridge last night. Snow falls steadily from the sky over Sapporo as Jirou braves the weather in pursuit of something warm and comforting. As he makes his way down to a local okonomiyaki shop, lo and behold he finds Fred standing outside, as if waiting for someone. Jirou immediately approaches Fred with a smile and good nature.]

Jirou: Fred, good to see you again. A nice coincidence, eh?

Fred: Yeah...I guess.

[Fred responds unenthusiastically, which Jirou immediately notices. He hears the rumbling again, and decides to bring it up.]

Jirou: You're in pain, aren't you?

[He asks kindly. Fred turns away.]

Fred: It's nothing.

Jirou: You haven't eaten anything since last night, have you? This isn't about your metabolism...you can't afford to eat, can you?

[Fred is silent, but finally responds.]

Fred: Yes. After you paid last night I haven't eaten anything. It was that way since you met me.

Jirou: Why didn't you just tell me the truth?

Fred: I didn't want your pity. That's a fate worse than death for me.

Jirou: Look, why don't we get something to eat. This shop looks good...

Fred: No, not there. Why don't we buy some protein shake mix instead. It helps ease the pain.

Jirou: Sure, there's a convenience store just down the road.

[The two continue on, not speaking to each other until they reach the store. However, the place has been blocked off by police, who are standing off with armed robbers holding the manager of the very store they were seeking hostage.]

Jirou: Shit, looks like we'll have to find some other...

[He notices that Fred has already darted towards the store.]

Jirou: Way...Fred, are you out of your mind?!

[Fred runs past the police barricades and through the front door. The windows are blocked by debris, making any motion in the store impossible to see. Several guns fire, presumably those of the robbers inside. However, they die down shortly after. Seconds later, Fred emerges from the store, assisting the store owner, who hands him ten containers of green-tea protein shake mix while thanking him continuously. Jirou is surprised that Fred made it out, let alone the fact that he took ten containers of protein shake mix. Fred works his way back to Jirou, all of his protein mixes in a basket, and once again with a smile on his face. Jirou notices that the rumbling has stopped.]

Jirou: What the Hell happened in there?

Fred: Oh, nothing much. They were just a bunch of weaklings and ran out when they couldn't hit me.

Jirou: Well, that's good. You seem to be feeling better.

Fred: Oh, I'm more than better, I feel great!

[The two share a smile and a short chuckle before Jirou finally opts to have breakfast. As the two walk away, the police enter the store to see that the store has no exit in the back, and yet the robbers have disappeared without a trace. Not even a shred of evidence was left. Back with the duo, Jirou finishes his meal.]

Jirou: Hey, Fred. I was wondering if you'd like to have dinner at my apartment? I'm sure Saya would be unable to find fault with you.

Fred: That's always good. She sounds like a sweet woman.

Jirou: She has her moments.

[He laughs jokingly.]

Jirou: To be honest, she can be mean at times, but she's snarky about it. I tend to bust her about her yaoi obsession.

Fred: She doesn't draw anything...does she?

[Fred says alarmed.]

Jirou: No, only stories. Why?

Fred: I don't want to see pics of you and me fucking on deviantART.

[Jirou laughs loudly as they continue on. Jirou's phone rings, the screen showing Saya's name. He answers.]

Jirou: Hey lovely, what's up?

Saya: I love you...Jirou.

[Jirou stops for a moment, confused why Saya is suddenly saying this.]

Jirou: Saya...

Saya: I...I'm scared, Jirou. I just...wanted to let you know...before they take me.

[Jirou's eyes widen, his pulse racing. He bites his lower lip as the situation becomes apparent.]

Jirou: I love you too, Saya.

[The call ends, no sound is heard in the background. Jirou is almost in tears as he begins to run towards the apartment, with Fred following close behind, not asking questions. They rush up the stairs, Jirou nearly ripping the door off the hinges as he enters the room to see it utterly destroyed. The furniture is torn to pieces, the lights smashed and littering the floor with bits of glass. The two friends stand in complete darkness, with only the light from the hall to illuminate them. Fred has a look of regret, or perhaps guilt on his face as he stares even more at the destruction. Jirou, still enraged and sorrowful, snaps at Fred, siezing him by the shirt and pulling him so they are face-to-face.]

Jirou: What the fuck happened here?!

Fred: ...

Jirou: God damn it, ANSWER ME! Saya is gone and I couldn't protect her!

[Jirou begins to cry.]

Jirou: This happened after I met you! You...you...!

[Fred pries Jirou's hands off of his shirt.]

Fred: I'm sorry, Jirou. I've lied to you. You deserve to know.

[Fred's body begins to change. His muscles become even larger, while his stomach area is emaciated, his ribs showing through the skin, which begins to turn ashen pale. His eyes become sunken and shine bright red. His nails lengthen to form claws, and his teeth turn to fangs. Jirou withdraws in fear, falling back and trying to find a way out, but Fred holds him tightly.]

Fred: Don't panic. I'm still your friend. But more importantly, whatever took Saya may still be here.

[Jirou stops struggling and nods nervously, understanding the logic behind it.]

Fred: I eat alot not because I'm poor or my metabolism is fucked to shit...I'm a Wendigo.

Jirou: What's that supposed to mean?

Fred: I'm a creature cursed with everlasting hunger. I'm only satisfied when...

Jirou: When?

Fred: When I eat human flesh.

[He coughs up a pistol and hands it to Jirou.]

Jirou: You ate those men from earlier?!

Fred: Yeah, which means I won't have to feed again for a while.

Jirou: But why did you get all that protein powder if only human flesh fills you up?

Fred: Oh, it's because sixteen percent of the human body is protein, so I can replace it with protein shakes temporarily. But I have to drink a shake made up of all ten of the containers I got.

Jirou: Damn...anyway, you said whatever took Saya must still be here, right?

Fred: Yes. Due to being a monster myself, I can sense other monsters.

[The two spot a figure moving from shadow to shadow, growling at them and moving ever faster.]

Jirou: What the Hell is that?!

Fred: A black dog, a spirit of death.

[The dog emerges from the darkness, its teeth shining brightly like the fire in its blood-red eyes. Fred then becomes surprisingly malevolent towards the evil spirit.]

Fred: Come here, poochie! Uncle Freddie wants to rub your belly...

[He displays his claws while speaking. The dog is not impressed, roaring loudly and sending the two flying into a wall. The umbrian canine speeds off again, slashing at Fred and leaving large gashes in his skin that begin to heal instantaneously. Thinking quickly, he grabs Jirou and holds him out away from his body.]

Jirou: What the fuck are you doing?!

[The dog then leaps out to attack Jirou. Without a second thought, Fred swings his mighty hand, slamming the dog's head into the wall. With a loud crack, Fred splatters brain matter, bone and eye fluid across the walls of the apartment. He releases Jirou to begin "clean up," practically licking the walls clean as he devours the body of his opponent. Jirou tries to get over the initial shock, sitting down at the barely stable dining table. Fred then returns to his human form, sitting with Jirou.]

Jirou: Fucking great! I move to a new city, I don't know anyone, don't have a job, my apartment is wrecked, my girlfriend is missing and my new best friend turns out to be a cannibalistic monstrosity.

Fred: That's a bit harsh.

Jirou: Fuck...

[He massages his face out of stress.]

Fred: Don't worry, Saya is definately still in Sapporo.

[Jirou stops to listen to this bit of good news.]

Jirou: So we can still catch up with whoever took her?!

Fred: Indeed. They're heading south currently. This would be the best time for us to stop them.

[Jirou stands and prepares to head out the door.]

Jirou: Then what are we waiting for?! Let's go!

[Fred siezes Jirou by the arm.]

Fred: Are you sure you want to go? I'm the only one capable of fighting these beasts.

Jirou: I don't care how far I have to go to get her back, all I need to know is that I can save Saya.

[Fred releases Jirou's arm.]

Fred: Alright, let's go now...I'm still taking my protein powder with me.

[The two head out into the snowy weather, with Fred leading the way south, hoping to recover Saya before Christmas.]

[Jirou and Fred headed south for about 15 minutes until they reach Sapporo's Curb Market. Fred stops for a moment.]

Jirou: What is it?

Fred: The trail's cold. It shouldn't have happened that fast.

Jirou: You mean you lost Saya!?

Fred: No, I'm sure they're here. But, our target is pretty crafty. There's a large monster population here, they must be using them to mask their trail.

Jirou: Do they know we're on to them?

Fred: Possibly.

Jirou: Damn it! We need to hurry!

Fred: The fact we've been keeping up with them means something. They're limited to human speed. We just need to ask around.

Jirou: I take it that you mean other monsters?

Fred: Yes.

[Jirou sighs.]

Jirou: Alright, just don't get me killed.

Fred: I'll keep that in mind.

[Devonte arrives in the Sapporo Market surprised at the population of monsters]

Devonte: Damn lost them

[Devonte is slightly shocked by the number of monsters in one area]

{Devonte: you would think they'd stand out in a place of these regulars}

[Devonte begins to ask around but most of the monsters say they haven't seen anything out of the ordinary]

[The two continue sweeping. Fred looks around, sighting numerous auras indicating inhuman creatures.]

Fred: There's a lot of them.

Jirou: Never would have guessed.

Fred: I'm trying to find a particular monster. An old friend of mine who should still be here.

Jirou: Will he be able to help out?

Fred: We'll see.
