Ape Escape 2 Overview: Well, I felt I was a little harsh on this game the first time around, so I thought about things for a bit before deciding to create this topic for any games that just feel "meh". Plot: All seems fine at the Professor's lab, save for the absence of its owner. In a video message to Jimmy, a young boy and cousin of Spike, the Professor asks him to deliver a payload of new pants to the Monkey Park using the transporter. However, Jimmy overloads the machine by sending Monkey Helmets to the park as well, allowing Specter to rise again. Having enraged Natalie and screwed everything up, it's up to Jimmy and his pet monkey, Pipotchi, to save the world. The story of Ape Escape 2 is similar to the original, though it includes the Freaky Monkey Five, a group of powerful monkeys who have been granted special powers by Specter. The surprise twist is that Pipotchi is more valuable than everyone thinks, so something new was brought to the table rather than repeat the kidnapping scene from Ape Escape 1. Characters: Ther cast returning from Ape Escape 1 is pretty bad. Both the Natalie and the Professor are completely different from their original roles. Natalie is now nagging and overbearing, while the Professor is aloof and irresponsible, leaving his machines in the care of Jimmy. Spike makes a return too, but only in the final cutscene. Specter is still evil, but you can tell that the dubbing studio tried their very best to suck the serious out of him with every fucking line spoken. Meanwhile, the new cast is tolerable at best. Jimmy is ok, he's nothing but a Spike clone, allbeit dumber (until they fucked up Spike's characterization up in later games to make him just as retarded as Jimmy). The Freaky Monkey Five all have somewhat vibrant personalities, but since you only see them once (or in Yellow's case, twice) we don't see them as characters but disposable henchmen. Gameplay: The game plays just like the previous, but with a few gadget additions and more boss fights. Still good. Graphics: The look of the game is better than the original, very smooth and lacking in framerate drops, but the darkness factor isn't used like it was in the previous game, though the cel-shaded design is very well done. Sound: The soundtrack is the worst in the series, but that's not saying much compared to other games, but to the original and subsequent sequels, it means alot. Very childish melody and rhythm to alot of the levels and an overall lack of atmosphere like the original. However, the monkeys and gadget noises are as great as ever, with all the gadgets from the previous carrying the same signature sounds. Levels: While many are beautifully made, there are many that are offputting. The size and complexity is more so than the original, but far more linear as well rather than open and explorable. Difficulty: Very easy, the only difficulty comes from finding monkeys. Overall: Now that I've gone back through, AE2 isn't as bad as I originally thought, but not that good still. I give it a 6/10 |
