Macross Frontier My 2nd and first real dip into the much acclaimed Macross universe. I was initially very sceptical of the show since I have head both good and bad from it but since it is the biggest real robot show after Gundam I had to give it a try. Released for the 25th anniversary of Macross, Frontier represents Macross at one of its strongest apparently. I’m actually gonna start with Music on this one. Basically if you hate the soundtrack your gonna hate the show with a burning passion, if you’re like me and really enjoy Ranka’s and Sheryl’s songs then you should really enjoy it. And it’s purely thanks to the song that Macross has one of the best final battles with a great tempo to it. The overall story isn’t the main focus of Frontier but it’s still very important to characters and their development. That said it’s not the most ingenuous story, giant bug aliens(Vajra) attack giant space fleet (lead by the Macross Frontier) looking for a new Earth, sounds simple with the main twist coming from the mystery behind the Battle Galaxy the Frontiers sister ship. However the main focus of the story is on the characters focusing on a love triangle of the 3 main characters. Mix that with fast-paced action, political intrigue and well done space drama and you have a well done show. Fotr me there’s little wrong with the story everything (bare 1 infuriating but in a good way bit) comes together nicely by the end and they came up with a half good reason as to why Ranka’s song’s help them in battle. Characters wise Macross has quite a colourful cast. The main character Alto is a trap pure and simplw however even the others characters pick up on this and it ties into his backstory very well and his conflict over whether he becomes a pilot to just run from his calling as an actor or whether it was because his true dream is to fly in the sky, not to mention he’s not half bad as a pilot. Every Macross has a love triangle and as the only male in this love triangle Alto needs two girls to fight over him or really just tease and annoy him as it turns out. First off is Ranka Lee, the cute green haired girl who aspires to be a singing idol like the Galactic Fairy, Sheryl Nome. Petite, lively and cheerful Ranka is almost too cute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02p4s7S931Y. However as the story progresses Ranka grows, matures, and has to overcome the truth behind her past. She also becomes a Galactic Idol on the level of Sheryl which can’t be bad. Meanwhile the 2nd female is Sheryl Nome herself, now I’m not gonna lie I like Sheryl more but dam is she a bitch in the beginning however she goes though maybe the worst of all the characters and really develops from a rather spoiled brat into fine woman. The rest of the cast are also strong from the cocky and flirty Sniper best friend (who even impresses Lockon in SRW :P) the badass squad captain. The only really point I’d take away from Macross’s characters is the main villain is a bit flat but between aliens and a class A good cast it’s hardly a problem. Animation wise it’s amazing top quality stuff but CG use for the Mech’s give it and awesome and unique style. Macross Frontier as a whole is what I perceive as Macross it’s a perfect bonding of action, love and music that creates one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had the pleasure of watching. And considering I watched it right after Code Geass it had a fuck top to live up to and it did. 10/10 If you seriously want to know if you will enjoy this, listen to this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdrb9tpTcuw&feature=related If you like watch, if you don’t go jump off a cliff. |

∀ Gundam or Turn A Gundam to the rest of us was released in 1999 and is one of the few shows not to get a dub. Turn A is also the last hand drawn gundam. Characters in Turn A are pretty strange for the most part the main character Loran is one of the most peaceful Gundam Protags with less kills than even Kira Yamato kinda funny since he's been using the strongest Gundam in Gundam. people also have a thing for dressing him up like a girl... that said Loran isn't really that central to the plot and it's more focused on Queen Dianna of the Moonrace and how she helps bring together the Moonrace and Earthrace. She also has a annoying trick with Kihel Heim her double where they switch clothes so you don't know who is who though out half the show! This brings me to the next two characters Kihel and Sochie Heim to sisters that end up in the middle of the war Kihel experiences it from taking Dianna's place at times and matures from having to live with the Moonrace. meanwhile Sochie joins the militia to avenge her fathers death. she begins as a angry racist character who learns though fighting with Loran to put her anger behind her. on the bad side we have Guin Sard Lineford a man who plays both sides swapping from side to side based on opportunity in his quest to bring the Moon technology to Earth. Guin stays though out most of the story using the Earth Militia for his own ends but never showing himself as a threat till right at the end. Of course Turn A's big villain is Gym Ghingham the strongest general of the Moonrace. he doesn't show up till the tail end of the show but is quick to show how dangerous he can be with his forces tactics and love of battle. oh and he's piloting Turn X which never hurts. The story revolves around the Moonrace's invasion of Earth and the conflict that spawns from this. Much of the story focus's not on the battles but how the battles effect people not just the main cast who are at the heart of the conflict but normal Earth and Moon people. we see people who just want to continue with there daily lives and others who join the battle, moonrace who no nothing of the conflict on earth and moonrace who once arriving on Earth want to do nothing more but make a normal live for themselves. We even get a marriage mid show. I think because Turn A has this focus on the human side of war and not just the pretty lights that most Gundam shows it comes off as much different and refreshing. Animation wise Turn A looks by far the best out of the pre 2000 shows and has a beautiful art style. The fights are well animated and look great. the designs of the Mecha aren't to everyones taste but I love them, as they look completely original well save for the 3 suits that are nicked from MSG and ZZ. Music wise Turn A's sound track is very calm compared to the last few shows and it does epic very well, but it's not got that high speed feel that wing's ost had. That said it gets points for having an original opening Turn A Turn and Black History is very fitting theme for the most powerful MS in Gundam. Turn A is different to normal Gundams but not radically like G was. it's Gundam from a different prospective and for that I love it. It also has by far the most interesting backstory that I could write a whole post about but thats somethign else entirely. It has great characters and epic suits and while there are a few crazy bits they don't cause much if any damage to the show as a whole. Turn A is by far one of the best Gundam shows and is well worth a watch 9.5/10 |

SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors I'm just gonna call this SD Gundam cause that name is a mouthful, anyway Ive just finished this in my quest to watch all the little Gundam bit's Ive missed/ ignored. i went in with low expectaions and was pleasantly surprised. Now knowing nothing of the three kingdom story, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the character's are all either based on or carbon copys of character's from that story, only there Gundam's/mobile suits well SD one's anyway. there was a lot of character's all with many funny (Chinese?) name's that I ended up just remembering the important guys and calling the rest by there MS names. But even so I enjoyed most of the character's especially the main character Liu Bei (Gundam) a typical selfless hero character archtype that I enjoy greatly and his JUSTICE is unbeatable! As well as him I also enjoyed the much famed Lu Bu (Tallgeese) a ruthless warrior who wishes only to fight, the only disappointing thing about him was his end but it was still good. Next up is Cao Cao (Gundam DX) I liked how Cao Cao was slowly built up to the big bad, he started out as a allie but slowly changed as the show progressed and it be came apparent that him and Liu Bei could not see eye to eye. Finally out of the main characters is Sun Quan (GP03), perhaps the most changed and developed character in the whole show, Sun starts out very much in his older brother's shadow and with a great fear and dislike of battle but he quickly learns that fight is sometimes the only way he can protect his family and friends and though the loss of his family he finds the courage within him to protect the people he loves. For the most part the supporting cast is good, most of the hero's are very likable while the villeins are blatantly dislike-able so it's vary black and white for the most part. The story I assume is the same as the one this is based off, with some slight tweaks, for the most part the story has a predicable formula, Big Bad introed gets the Holy Seal, does some bad stuff , Lu Bu joins him, Hero's join together and together beat them. Of course there's a bit more too it to that but it's still pretty obvious the basic structure is the same for each of the Story arcs. one of the things I did like about the story was each character got a chance to shiny and the Hero didn't beat a Big Bad until the final one which prevented things from been boring. Each arc also made sure to swap between the main party's regular enough to keep things fresh while not been annoying. The Story is simple but fun at the end of the day. It also looks to leave it's self open and I would welcome a sequel. Animation wise, it's a mixed bag, it looks fine, but SD isn't the best design to do fight scenes with which makes fights more often or not, who pulls of the flashiest special move. The Music was quite fun and while I wasn't over joyed at the 2nd half's main song the firstly half's (Justice Fight) I really liked and it was bloody epic when it showed up in one of the final episodes. it's a simple show, with a light but fun story, with flashy attacks and some Gundam fan's will enjoy just seeing the MS having personality's (Some really fit)as long as you can get past the SD designs and aren't expecting a deep plot, I don't see how you can't at least enjoy this show. 8/10 |

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: a New Translation Well we all know my stance on Zeta but still, I decided to watch this cause you know, it's been quite a while and i felt maybe I would like it a bit more if it was shorter. Turns out I still can't say I like this show but anyway what did I think of this remake movie thing. Well first of it's very rushed like it skips lots like Roberto's death. Now I won't lie I can't remember how he died anyway because I feel nothing towards him and Apolly since they are little more than grunts with no character i could tell you about, but still seeing him randomly stop showing up was strange and annoyed me. And it's not the only time we have something like this, it happens with Rosamia as well, last we see of her is her baling out of the destroyed Garplant only to show up right at the end when Kamille summons his harem Ghost powers to make an already unsatisfying battle even more crap but more on that latter. That said this means we skip the god awful and pointless Rosamia arc but sadly we still have the god awful "Sarah is gonna blow up the Moon City!" one. Which still feels out of place and pointless, and to top it off we lose the pretty good Kilimanjaro arc completely though this does prevent Four from living though a bullet to the head and the plane she is on blowing up so I guess I would of shouted even more had she lived though that..... But on the upside i did feel they handled Reccoa's side swap much better in this As well as this there's less annoying things like the M-II suddenly having a paint swap with no explanation or how the Hyaku Shiki was on the Argama as soon as Char got back to from stealing the MK-II begging the question, why wasn't he piloting that instead of the Rick Deis in the first place? The other big problem Ive found is also the only reason to watch this thing, and thats the new footage which looks great, and really makes the MS shine.............that is until they randomly pop back to using the 80's and you feel like you have just been hit by a train. Seriously I'm not one to complain about animation I'm fine watching old shows but when you have old and new footage mixed together and swapping back and forth (somethings in the same god dam fight as well) it really really is distracting and annoying as all hell, This is mainly a problem in the first two movies but the last movie has a much greater amount of new footage but it's still a problem especially in the final fight, which I was shocked to see them not reanimate. My final complaint on this is lack of Dub, this is my first time watching Zeta in Japanese and I couldn't like any of the cast, they all sound generic as all hell and whats worse i couldn't even tell when Sircocco (the best thing to come out of Zeta) was talking because he sounded like any old fuckin grunt. needless to say i hated the lot with only really bask's been any good since it fitted quite well. A part from this I can't really say much more, that ive not said already, I still dislike early Kamille, Katz is still god awful, Sircocco is still epic and almost kills more bad guys than the good guys do, Katz and Emma's deaths are still pointless and retarded, jerids is crap, almost 80% of the cast are morons, Char is still unimpressive as a pilot and the Titan's are still the most black, evil for the sake of been evil force in Gundam. However they have greatly improved on the music! Not much else to say, your not missing much not watching this, since it's not cannon anyway but if your one of those strange people who can somehow like this story then by all means what it for the new scenes, it's all it's really worth watching it for. in hindsight I was proabbly a bit harsh on Zeta giving it a 6 when it's more of a 6.5/7. This however with all it's problems is a solid 6. |

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO An interesting one this one. Igloo is very different from all the other Gundam shows ive seen. It's an interesting take on a group of Zeon soldiers who are meant to simply be a group that tests new weapons but as Zeon starts to lose and the OYW intensify they take part in more and more battles. The show is split into two halfs each only 3 episodes long, The Hidden One Year War that deals with pre-Odessa battles and shows the first time MS are used in combat (including a camo by the red comet himself) then there is Apocalypse 0079 which leads up to the end at A Boa Qu. It's story is very episodic each dealing with a new Zeon test MS (and sometimes the pilots) that are generally simple failures that show great promise in the battle but ultimately blow up in some fashion. Each show has a very bittersweet ending that normally has the test MS succeeding in it's mission but been destroyed in someway at the end often killing the pilot. It really gos a long way towards showing that although Zeon had some pretty good suits ultimately they where fighting a battle they where not going to win, and this becomes apparent even from the 2nd episode onwards. One thing the show does really well is show just how deluded the propaganda of Zeon was and how even some of the Zeon's themselves knew that they weren't going to win. The characters are quite simple, there's nothing special about them, there just normal soldiers, no ace's just normal engineers and a few pilots. The crew is slightly increased in the second half when a Ace joins but it looks like he was more of a washed up ace than anyone of note coming from how the Zeon homeland treats him. The whole show is done in 3D which is kinda a mixed bag for me, the MS look great and the fight scenes are really good but the characters are hit and miss and sometimes I found myself laughing at the faces they pulled. overall the show is short and sweet, and even someone like me how really has no love for the OYW quite liked it. It added some nice background to the war without causing any trouble. I was a little let down with no Gundam camo at the final battle but eh, the MA was pretty cool. it's a fine 7/10, didn't overstay it's welcome and got right to the point. |

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2 The follow up to Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO, Number 2 changes the perspective to the Federation side. Unlike the original, number 2 does not forces around a main crew as such but rather each episode centers one a Federation solider that is haunted by a "Death God of Zeon" which by the end of the episode takes the persons life. With only three episodes it's very short but still packs quite a bit into it. The first episode has the main character as a Anti-MS captain, essentially a group of foot soldiers fighting MS. Then we have a Type 61 Tank pilot which has a great fight sequence. and Finally a Proto-type Guntank pilot. I have to say each of the episodes are very good just like the original MS Igoo but they are very fragmented and not really tied together so really there just shorts and so lose a bit of the Igoo feeling. Character wise, each of the characters have something in there past that drives them and ultimately it's this drive that gets them killed. Same as 1, Igoo 2 is 33D and suffers from the same problems and has the same strengths really. Overall it's pretty similar to Igoo 1 but is shorter and unconnected which hurts the story a bit. But I found the action to be better here. overall, not quite as good as the original but still a fair show 6.5/10 |

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 1 The first season of Gundam 00 is one hell of a ride, moving at a great pace that while fast at times is never boring. The world is very well constructed early on and this helps set up most of the political motives in the story. So what is this story, well at it's basic it's a new age Wing with 4 gundams attacking the world in order to bring about peace thought armed interventions, this helps distinguish 00 from Wing whose Gundams where really just waging war on OZ. however 00 also hits at a greater plan behind Celestial Beings actions and in fact the secrecy of the organization as a whole and it's plan helps to draw you in. Despite the Gundams initial invincibility the fight's are rarely totally one sides and by the mid point, the Gundams are on the defensive almost as much as on the offense, this is helped by the wealth of great villein ace's like Graham, Soma and Ali who are all very well developed and just as if not more interesting as the main heros. Another interesting bit 00 shows is though the eyes of Saji, this gives us a very good look at a normal kids life and we see how the Gundam's effect his normal life. The Gundam pilots themselves are a mixed bag, Setsuna has less personality than a brick wall but not without reason and slowly opens up as the show advances. Lockon, is all round awesome but his flaw is laid bare at the end and is his ultimate down fall, Allelujah is also pretty boring as the peaceful type torn, but is made a great character thanks to his other personality, named Hallelujah who never falls to be badass when ever he shows his face. Teria however is fare less interesting but he develops quickly towards the end. There are few bad characters in 00 S1 and even the underwhelming Alejandro Corner is a pretty passable bad guy. Animation wise you can barely fault the show, the show is a joy to watch and while the MS designs take some getting use to, but I ended up really liking them by the end. The music is also great with the Union having one of the most kickass themes in Gundam. Overall this season of 00 is great and one of the best Gundam shows out, that shows a lot but also sets up a lot for the next season. 9/10 Edited by Black Golem, Nov 8 2011, 08:22 PM.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season 2 The second season of 00 kicks off 4 year's after the final battle of season 1 that saw, Lockon and others die, Allelujah be captured and Setsuna go missing. The Earth Sphere government has now united more or less the entire world save for the middle east thanks to there new autonomous peace-keeping force, A-Laws, who are so totally not the Titans... Anyway thanks to the A-Laws evil deeds Cb decides to begin it's operations again after Teria saves Setsuna from getting his ass handed to him by the new MS of the A-Laws. From here Setsuna begins reuniting the fractured group, including Lockon Stratos' twin brother and the now hallelujah-less Allelujah. Before they begin to prepare to take down the A-Laws and finally face off against the "Innovators" the group lead by Ribbons Almark and the group currently in control of Veda. Season's 2's plot kinda looks like a strange Late Wing/ Zeta mix up that continues to shed light on the truth behind Celestial Being and there ultimate goal, the dialogs to come. The storys main theme of understanding was a much better more well thought out version of the idea of the UC's newtypes, it still has a few "what?" moments like 00R having a special mode that only works when it's piloted by a true Innovator dispute Setsuna been the first ever. Many of the old characters return but there a bit mixed. Setsuna has changed little over the time skip but thats not really a bad thing, while ultimately he's still a bit boring he does his job well and thats effect other characters and overall direct the group. He also kinda evolves... I guess thats pretty high on the development scale. Lockon 2 i was a bit unconformable with at first, but he never really feels like old Lockon, whose position as leader has more or less been taken by Setsuna at this point. Neil is also central to one of the best moments in the show, namely his relationship with Anew whose death I was genuinely sad about, something thats not happened in Gundam for a long time and was far more impactful than the original Lockon's death. Allelujah's arc centers around his relationship with Soma Peries from the first show and expands on her background. At first I felt it went really too quickly with Allelujah getting her back and returning her to Marie Parfacy really earlier on but events soon have her back as Soma. it's a nice little arc by it's self nothing to amazing but nice to watch. Teria is well Teria... to be far to the guy though he's definitely became more human after the events of S1 and he's not a total bore this time around. So for the most part the good guys have got better the bad guys however are another story.. oh Graham what did they do to you. graham went from been one of the most interesting bad ass characters in S1 to some kinda Setsuna stalker in a mask that keeps going on about ancient Japanese sword style EVEN THOUGH THE GUY IS AMERICAN! the dude even trained under a water fall! AND to top it all off the guy only has 1 fight when he seems dangerous and thats like his first one! All I can hope is that he's saved by the movie.... Ali is well Ali, not much else to say but i was greatful to see Lockon be the guy to put a bullet though his brain and not Setsuna, since Setsuna had moved on. The Innovators though leave a lot to be desired between there stupid names and strange suit's they never manage to be overly impressive, even Lockon says so. Saji and Louise also return but while the first show had them showing up there normal views from relative safety, till the last few shows at least. This time the two are right at the center of the conflict with Louse out to destroy Celestial Being, meanwhile Saji is thrown into it by chance and really grows though making stupid selfish human mistakes. Saji grows greatly and by the end he had really became a fine character even if he wasn't a mobile suit pilot and was only there to rescue Louise. Finally Ribbons, Ive seen a lot of hate for Ribbons but I think he was great. He was what I want from a final boss/ big bad, someone who's manipulative and clever but can be caught out and has a bit of a God complex. He's also one heck of a pilot, I can't remember the last boss that took this much to bring down, not only is he the only one to overpower 00R but he does it with little real effort and even has time enough to put HAllelujah super mode out of commission (granted his MS was in a stated but still, he only uses his fangs). And he's not damaged until the ship comes in and starts firing at him and uses smoke to let Setsuna get close to do some damage but thats still not enough he then has to get mind attacked by Teria before Trans-Am clashing with Setsuna and even after that clash the Reborns is still able to move, unlike the 00R and it's not until Setsuna gets tech advantage via Exia R2 vs 0 Gundam that ribbons is finally brought down. And this guys not used a MS in 11 years? What else to say, the music and animation is up to the high standards of S1 and while the shows plot and characters can drop from time to time it's still a thrilling show from start to end. I really wanted to dislike 00 when I fist saw it, listening to the Internet, it seemed so easy to hate, but having watched it, it was amazing, great show and it shows that gundam continues to move forward and get better... more or less. 9/10 |

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie -A wakening of the Trailblazer Well here it is the grand finale to 00 and a first for Gundam, in that we have aliens. Now before watching this movie I knew a bit about it, I knew more or less about the ELS and what Setsuna becomes. but other than that I'd mange to see very little, i'd seen the MS designs only briefly save for 00 Quanta and that was really it. the premise intrigued me and I was happy with how it turned out. So first off what the movie did well; The pacing and story, the story was really simple, it had learned from past Gundam movies to not try and throw too much into it, Aliens are attacking the earth, we have to defeat/understand them, end. Nice and simple and for the most part it was well paced we got plenty of none combat scenes and plenty of fights. the only really problem is that the epilogue didn't really address everything, it just kinda time-skip several years into the future to See Mecha Setsuna! The fights, so pretty.. so flashy ok, I loved every fight in this movie from Alleluiah running from the ELS trucks to the final battle that had everything and was animated amazingly. Also the movie had Halleluiah and Allelujah having conversations with themselves mid battle that was just fun to watch, you gotta feel sorry for Soma though listening to it all. I also liked how it never felt like any of the characters where immortal, everyone seemed very capable to die, save maybe Setsuna but thats just using common sense. But the final few minutes of the battle I was pleading with the screen not to kill Lockon and Alleluiah and was really sad to see Graham die even if it was a heroic death... FOR THE FUTURE. I also wasn't expecting Andrei to die, but I felt his death and final words were fitting even if Ive never liked him, he died well. ELS. There weren't just humans with 3 eyes or that are green or beasts that are attacking Earth because but real aliens that were try to understand humans using the only way they could by fusing with them. as for what I didn't like 00 had a big enough cast for this movie adding Mehna while funny wasn't really necessary and I liked Billy and Sumeragi.... Descartes Shaman was a bit more interesting since it showed how the Federation tret it's first innovator but he died before he really mattered. 00 Quanta was a tease, it did nothing save for go IDEON SWORD! then strip. It felt a bit of a let down, same for Raphael Gundam, it could of lived a bit longer. As Ive already said the epilogue was rushed, I would of liked to of heard what happened to CB also what happened to Teria, is he still living in the flower 00 Quanta. For once I'm gonna say I was very happy with a Gundam movie, it overall was a good movie and I enjoyed it 8/10 Edited by Black Golem, Dec 9 2011, 06:48 PM.
