This is a short piece to inform everyone of little tid-bits of info on Dante Alighieri's Inferno, which I reference several times. The Dark Forest: The initial location of Inferno. Dante finds himself here on Good Friday, possibly contemplating suicide. The forest lays before him the challenges of the Leopard, the lion and the She-wolf. Leopard: The first of the evil trinity. The Leopard represents the sins of Fraud and Treachery in the Inferno. Lion: The second of the evil trinity. The Lion represents the sin of Violence. She-wolf: The third of the evil trinity. She represents the sins of Lust, Gluttony and Greed. Virgil: The ancient poet, famous for his work The Aeneid, he is ordered by Beatrice to escort Dante through the different circles of Hell and Purgatory. Beatrice Portinari: Dante's lover, she died and transcended to Heaven, where she waits to show Dante the spheres of Heaven. Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here: The famous quote inscribed on the gates of Hell. The Vestibule: This is an area that lies just before the nine circles, reserved for those who were permanently neutral, including angels who refused to take a side in the rebellion. Their punishment is to eternally pursue a banner while being stung by wasps. Charon: The ferryman of the Acheron, he is a skeletal being with eyes of flame. Acheron: The first river of Hell that souls must cross to reach the true dominion of Hell. Limbo: The first circle of Hell. Oddly enough, there is no punishment here save for the separation from God and Heaven. This is the home of the virtuous pagans and unbaptized people. Homer, Ovid, Lucan, Saladin and Virgil himself all lie within this circle. King Minos: The Judge of the Underworld. He was once a Greek King who was known for his fairness, now serving in Hell as the judge of the damned, condemning souls to a particular circle based on their crimes. Lust: The second circle of Hell. Those who commit adultery, or are blatantly sexual are condemned here, tossed about in a massive storm that is meant to tear the lovers apart. Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, Mark Anthony, and Lancelot are but a few of the souls condemned here. In particular, a woman named Francesca di Polenta, who was caught having an affair with the younger brother of her husband. Gluttony: The third circle of Hell. Here, those who indulge too often in food and drink are punished. They are forced to lounge about in mud created by a constant rain, to simulate the filth they produced in life. The only known person here is Ciacco, a native of Florence who knew Dante. Greed: The fourth circle of Hell. For those who flaunted wealth, either by hoarding or squandering their money. The souls here are punished by being forced to push a massive boulder for eternity, often fighting with others by rolling their boulders into those of their fellow sinners. No prominent souls are featured here, as the identities of the sinners are indistinguishable. Anger: The fifth circle of Hell that lies on the river Styx. This circle punishes those who allowed their anger to overcome them, whether it be wrath (outward aggression) or sulleness (inward aggression) by having them drown in the river Styx, metaphorically "choking on their own venom". Filippo Argenti is the only soul shown here, who was a political enemy of Dante's back in Florence. Phlegyas: Once a Greek king, who, in a fit of rage, burned down the temple of delphi. Now, he forever serves as the ferryman to the City of Dis. Styx: The second river of Hell. Unlike the Acheron, Styx is a massive marsh that surrounds the City of Dis, and serves as the place of torment for the sinners of Anger. The City of Dis: The city of darkness and fire. This is the location of the final circles. Heresy: The sixth circle of Hell. Here are the heretics, who went against the teachings of the church. The punishment involves being encased in a flaming tomb or begin crucified upside down and then roasted alive. Farinata Uberti and Calvacante de' Calvacanti are two aquaintances of Dante who lie in this circle. Violence: The seventh circle of Hell. This circle is split into three sections: violence against others (ex. murder, vandalism), violence against oneself (suicide), and violence against God (sodomy, blaspheming, usury). The first are submerged in the Phlegethon, the boiling river of blood, the second group are turned into trees, their bodies racked with pain, and the third group are sentenced to either walk around, lie down, or sit down in a desert of burning sand, where flakes of fire fall from the sky. Alexander the Great, Pietro della Vigna, and Brunetto Latini are a few of those condemned here. Phlegethon: The third river in Hell. This river of boiling blood tortures those who commited violence unto others and their property, submerging them to a certain level depending on how many victims they had. Fraud: The eighth circle of Hell. Fraud is split into ten ditches, known as the Malebolge or "Evil Pouches". The demons who watch over the eighth circle are known as the Malebranche or "Evil Claws", lead by Malecoda ("Evil tail"). The ten ditches are split into Panderers and Seducers, Flatterers, Simonists, Flase Prophets/Sorcerers/Astrologers, Corrupt politicians, Hypocrites, Thieves, Evil councillors, Sowers of discord, and falsifiers. The 1st are whipped by demons, the 2nd group are shit upon by demons, the 3rd are given an inverse baptism (held upside down with their feet set ablaze), the 4th have their heads twisted around, the 5th are thrown into boiling pits of pitch, the 6th are forced to wear cloaks lined with crippling amounts of lead, the 7th are bitten by serpents, who transform them with every bite, the 8th are individually set ablaze, the 9th have their limbs hacked off with a sword, and the 10th are afflicted with several diseases. Several individuals lie in Fraud, too many to list. Treachery: The ninth and final circle of Hell. Treachery is a frozen wasteland on the Lake Cocytus, kept in this state by the wind generated by Satan's wings. Here, those who betrayed their family, community, guests, lords and benefactors, and God are punished here, frozen to a certain level in the ice depending on the severity of their sin. Several sinners like Count Ugolino, Mordred, Fra Alberigo, Brutus, Cassius and Judas are all here, with the final three being chewed on by one of Satan's three mouths. The devil himself is frozen up to his waist in the ice, frozen in his own tears. Edited by Omega, Mar 1 2010, 09:34 PM.
