First Name: Alec Last Name: Grantaire ~Prefix: Monsieur Gender: Male Age: 27 Appearance: Average height, thin and scruffy looking. Grantaire has a thin face with large bushy eyebrows that seem to wander off in different directions when he is talking animatedly. No one could call him handsome. His nose is long, and twisted slightly in the middle. There are small wrinkles around his eyes as though he squints a lot, and his skin is sallow from too much drink and dark wineshops. His hair is usually greasy, and his dress-sense is stylish, but often so messy that it’s hard to tell. ~Height: 5’6” ~Build: Thin, but there’s muscle there. ~Skin Tone: Pale and sallow. ~Hair Colour: Black. ~Eye Colour: Green – bleary – and usually more than a little red. ~Face Claim: Anthony Crivello. ![]() ~Accent/Phonetics: Weeeelll…. He’s drunk a lot of the time. So yes. He slurs some of his words. History: Born in Chartre, Grantaire was the eldest son of a large and prosperous family. His father was a magistrate, so it always seemed inevitable that Grantaire would enter into studies of the law. He was very fond of his sister but did not get on so well with his brother. Since his sister and brother were closer in age to each other, they often spent time together – which left Grantaire on his own. He was a good student and easily earned a place in the prestigious law school in Paris. His family gave him a handsome allowance, but shortly after his arrival Grantaire fell in love with the wiles of the city. He had always been active as a youth, and took the chance to hone his naturally agile body and fast reflexes in the art of savate. His fencing skills were hardly polished enough for the kind of crowd he was associating with, so he took lessons and soon became very proficient. This was a good thing as his gambling, drinking, and tendency to chase women gained him many friends and even more enemies. In an unfortunate brawl at the back of a wineshop, Grantaire was unlucky enough to badly wound the son of an important gentleman. He quickly found himself in prison – and this time on a far more serious charge than drunken carousing. After a few hours, he was joined by a gentleman of generous size who came equipped with wine. Over a few glasses, the gentleman put an interesting proposal before Grantaire. He said that the important man was willing to push for Grantaire to be sent to the galleys, but this could be avoided if Grantaire would agree to a proposition. It then transpired that the Gentleman was none other than Vidocq himself. He had heard of Grantaire’s involvement in law school as well as his brief sojourn in (prison name) a few months before. Grantaire was intrigued by the proposal, and listened as Vidocq outlined his plan. Some legal students seemed to be forming a political activist group, and Vidocq needed someone on the inside. However, the plant needed to be someone who was above – or rather below – suspicion. Someone who was already a member of the faculty. Amused by the idea, Grantaire accepted. The next day he attended a meeting of the friends of the ABC. At first he was quite amused by the task of spying and pretending to be drunk. However, as he got to know the Amis better he began to feel pangs of guilt. And then he fell for the leader. After this his drinking was no longer an act. He was torn between his very real loyalty to Vidocq (someone he had come to respect in their encounters) and his new and burgeoning feelings for Enjolras… It should be noted that Grantaire does not believe the revolution will succeed. Under the cover of his natural cynicism is a very real fear that his new friends may get hurt in this dangerous venture. This is why he spends a lot of his time pointing out the flaws in their plans and basically making fun of them. ~Family Member(s): Henri Grantaire (father), Minette Grantaire (mother), Simon Grantaire (deceased Elise Grantaire (engaged to be married) ~Crush: Enjolras Personality: Grantaire is a cynic. He’s also a born thespian. He loves the thrill of acting out a role and fooling the world. Quickly bored, his is an agile mind that sees all the foolishness of the world. He was born to poke holes in the fabric of history and laugh as everything falls apart. He is a languid person who only really applies himself if he can see the point in what he is doing. In the case of law – he doesn’t see the point at all. In the case of fighting, he sees the point as ‘I get beat up less if I’m good at this!’ However, Grantaire does wish he could believe in something. His sudden disillusionment came about with the violent death of his brother, the ensuing hash of the official investigation, and finally his complete culture shock upon entering Paris. After a few months of the Parisian night-life, all his beliefs were gone. Which is why he looks to Vidocq and Enjolras to save his soul… ~Quirks: Grantaire is afraid of water. He is also deadly afraid of looking like a fool – his remedy to be to get as much experience of his phobias as he can. He can swim relatively well and spends a lot of his time looking like a fool. Neither of which has decreased his fears one jot. ~Sexual Orientation: Bi. He has a few mistresses, but he is infatuated with Enjolras. ~Other: He’s not sure yet what he’s going to do about his divided loyalties. He's always wanted a kid - or more - but as yet he hasn't been able to find a grisette who wants a kid of his. He settles for awkwardly spoiling any and every child, nephew, and/or neice that appears around the Ami. He doesn't realise it, but he is suffering from wet pleurisy. This was compounded by an attack of pneumonia when he was thirteen, and the bad treatment he's lately been giving his liver. The coug came first, and now he's beginning to experience sharp pain in his side. This has been going on for several weeks. Secret Word: POMP LIKES: Dancing, fencing, the smell of fresh hay, books, absinthe, Ancient Greece and Rome, children DISLIKES: The Cold, loneliness, water, looking like a fool, cats ABILITIES: Dancing, savate, fencing, gambling, drinking, flirting, making crazy speeches, cooking INABILITIES: Coherency, sincerity, belief, hope, faith, and other sparkly pure things OPINIONS: Vidocq: A nice enough lad. A little too fond of the drink, though. Was meant to be a bloody part, the fool. THREADS: Abandoned 1. On a Street 2. Grantaire in Repose Current 1. Visit Weary Athenian 2.
