I apologise for the length. I got carried away. Vidocq is somewhere in a grey area between an OC/Historical Character and canon for Les Miserables. Both Valjean and Javert were based off him, Javert being the policeman and Valjean being the humanitarian. First Name: Eugene ~Middle Name: Francois Nickname/Alias: Friends call him Gene, most criminals call him Jules. He has many aliases and other identities. Last Name: Vidocq ~Prefix: Monsieur Gender: Male Age: 59 Appearance: Vidocq is a handsome older man with an irrepressible twinkle in his eyes. He is also a highly practiced actor and a disguise artist. He can disguise himself so well that he passes unnoticed among the dangerous denizens of the Paris underworld despite the fact that his is a well-recognized face. ~Height: 5’8” ~Build: Vidocq has broad shoulders, and a moderately wide girth. He is very strong. He can change his stance to fit in with the role he is playing. ~Skin Tone: Vidocq has a ruddy, healthy complexion. ~Hair Colour: Brown ~Eye Colour: Blue ~Face Claim: Vidocq: ~Accent/Phonetics: M. Vidocq is a practiced actor and can change his manner of speech for his various parts. However, when playing himself, Vidocq has a slight accent, a soft burr. He speaks intensely, and raises his voice when he gets excited. History: A difficult matter to cover. Vidocq was born in Arras to a well-off baker. A wild youth, he rebelled against the restrictions of business and learning, and stole several times from his parents. At first he merely siphoned from the till, but later – at the urging of another friend – he stole the family silver, sold it, and apparently blew the proceeds on a couple of days high living. His parents had him arrested, but Vidocq knew his mother would get him out after several days and such proved to be the case. Several times, he ran away from home. Once he attempted to go to the ports in the intention of boarding a ship to America – but instead ended up being scammed by a couple of ‘actresses’ and had to return home. Another time he joined up with the circus, but it had none of the pomp he expected, and he grew tired of cleaning out the animal cages and left. In time, Vidocq joined the army and led an exiting life of fighting, womanizing, arrests, brawls, duels, and deserting. He ended up back at Arras where he interfered in a planned execution and saved the life of the intended victim. However, Vidocq ended up in prison under threat of execution. Luckily due to the influence of his father and the daughter of one of the leaders of the revolutionary practices in Arras, he was released. However, he was thrown very much into the company of the daughter and one thing led to another. She claimed pregnancy, and Vidocq – at 18 – found himself in possession of a wife. After discovering that the pregnancy was a ploy to net him, he returned to the army. After some adventures during which he left the army, he ended up in Paris with a mistress called Francine. He discovered that she was cheating on him and beat up the other man, a deed which sent him to prison for six months. While in prison, he got suckered into allowing several prisoners to use his cell to forge a pardon for a farmer who stole some grain to feed his starving family. To Vidocq’s horror, when the forgery was discovered the cons ganged together to lay all the blame on him. Facing a far bigger sentence, Vidocq escaped. And then was rearrested. And escaped again. This cycle repeated itself again and again and again over the years. Vidocq spent time in Brest and Toulon, but never stayed in any prison for too long. Eventually, he managed to stay out of prison with the help of his mother and a mistress called Annette. He set up a business, made money, and tried to keep out of trouble. Luck wasn’t with him, as first his in-laws and then some old ‘friends’ from the underworld (who used his carriage to kill someone in, and left blood all over the seats) blackmailed and harassed him. After the incident with the murder, Vidocq went to La Mal Ange – M. Henri the prefect – and asked for help. Henri refused to offer amnesty in exchange for information on Vidocq’s ‘friends’ and so Vidocq was forced to flee. He was caught, and imprisoned. By now he was heartily sick of the cycle, and offered Henri another bargain. He would be a mouchard, a spy, from inside prison for the police in exchange for eventual freedom. Henri agreed and for twenty months Vidocq spied on his fellow prisoners. By now his reputation was so good that those who suspected him of being a mouchard were quickly squashed by the other cons. Eventually, the police helped Vidocq stage his own escape, and he was hired by Henri to start the very first plain clothes police force. The Surete. Over the years he recruited a select force of ex-cons, being of the mind that ex-thieves were far better for the job as they knew how crooks thought. He was responsible for catching thousands of criminals and changing the face of policing forever. He was not popular with other policemen or agents due to his successes and his ego. ~Spouse/Fiancé(e): Flueride ~Love Interest: Flueride and various mistresses. Personality: Vidocq is very clever, very brave, very audacious, very creative, and very very very egoistic. He has an intense personality which either sweeps you along with him, or pushes you over. A brilliant actor, he can change his face by rearranging his expression, and act well enough to fool men who would happily knife him in the back into accepting him as one of their own. Charming, personable, and with a wicked sense of humour, he sweeps women off their feet and treads on the toes of all the wrong people. All he cares about is getting the job done and catching his criminals, and he is the best man in Paris for the job. He doesn’t care about the pride of his colleagues, he just cares about his men and his work. He has a soft spot for ex-cons, and frequently hires them as spies. When out of the Surete briefly, he tried to set up a factory run only by ex-convicts. Unfortunately it failed. He is not faithful to his wife. In fact, he is far from faithful to her. However, he loves her dearly, and she obviously understands his weaknesses. ~Quirks: Allergic to cats. Has a long scar on his side from the war. ~Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual. One of his literary friends portrayed ‘him’ (or rather the character who was based off him) as homosexual. I’m sure Vidocq laughed. ~Other: He is the leader of the Surete. Pomp? LIKES: Snuff, the smell of wet ink, sleep, coffee that is not cold, good wine, women, the texture of good greasepaint. DISLIKES: Cold potatoes, the snow, chains, gunsmoke, purple ABILITIES: According to him, everything. INABILITIES: He doesn't do tact or modesty well. OPINIONS: Fouche: He's th' boss, eh? Alec Durand: According to him, he is the most important man in France. Perhaps he's right. Perhaps he isn't. He's decent enough when away from his band of ruffians, though. Alec Grantaire: Big fellow. Lot's of hair. Never has the same face twice. THREADS: Surete Timeline
