Leader of the Surete

FIRST NAME Luc
×MIDDLE NAME Patrice
×NICKNAME/ALIAS Rabouin (devil)

LAST NAME Javert

GENDER Male

AGE[font] 52

APPEARANCE Javert is a tall man, very tall. His shoulders are broad, but the rest of him is thin and wiry. A police-man's job is never done, and he has never had the time for food. He walks like a hunting wolf, and stands like a malevolent statue watching over a grave, his arms folded and his chin jutting out like a battering ram at every observer. He has incredible dramatic flair, and can alter his appearance to fit his part - blending into the shadows as he likes. This is a useful skill indeed, considering the relative disadvantage his height puts him at. His eyes are startling and peircing, and have been said to draw a man's soul out of his body to check through its pockets and read its papers. As he is half a gypsy, his skin is the darker colour of the Roma race, and his nose is large, broad-nostrilled and wide.

×HEIGHT 6'3"
×BUILD Broad shoulders, but lanky arms and legs. Like a thin inverted triangle with all the weight on top.
×SKIN TONE Dark. As he spent a good twenty years of his life in Toulon, his naturally darker skin has been amplified by the sun-baked dark tan of the bagnes.
×HAIR COLOUR Black and long, frequently tied back in a neat cue, but when the part dictates, loose.
×EYE COLOUR His eyes are grey and hooded.
×FACE CLAIM Phillip Quast - who else??

×ACCENT/PHONETICS Javert spent most of his life around guards and criminals. He speaks argot fluently, and his voice is deep and gravelly, with a faint sibilant accent which he picked up from his superior and mentor at Toulon. His mentor was Austrian, and Javert can speak some of the language still.

HISTORY
Javert is a son of the prisons. He was born in prison to a gypsy fortune teller and her convict lover. When he was six years old, his mother died suddenly and the prison authorities removed him from his father's care. For a child of that upbringing it would have been most practical for Luc to have been put into an orphanage/workhouse until he was old enough to support himself. However, M. Aberle Heideck, who had been fond of his mother, stepped in and claimed the tuition and raising of the boy. From a young age, Javert - who had an abnormally high intellect - was aware that his beginnings had set him up for a single path in life. He was born to be a thief and a vagabond. Rebelling against this decree of fate, Javert instead determined to follow the only other path that he saw as being open to him. He could fight the law or uphold it, and he chose the latter. M. Heideck brought him up as a protege, letting Javert follow him around on his rounds as a guard, and teaching the boy how to read and write. As he learned how to read in a small antechamber close to the rooms in which the returned horses (escaped prisoners) were kept in, Javert developed a dislike for the written word. For years afterwards it reminded him of groaning screaming men, and the stench of excrement and vomit.
At the age of 16, Javert became a guard. He stayed a guard for twenty four years before being transferred to the police. Through an uncanny stroke of luck, he managed to solve a case surrounding the Prefet of Paris' wife, and was rewarded with a promotion and a transfer to a small country town of Montreiul sur Mer. Here he formed a suspicion about the Mayor of the town, which was ultimately proved true. Although he believed after denouncing the Mayor in a fit of exasperation and professional pique that he was wrong, and tried to submit his resignation. Although he was intrumental in the arrest of M. Madeleine/Jean Valjean, the convict swiftly escaped from captivity and made his way to Paris. Javert was called to follow and aided the police in recapturing the convict. After this, Javert was again transferred, and has been working as an inspector in the Paris police ever since.
A formidable detective, and passionate worker, Javert has become the Devil of the underworld, feared for his skill and respected for his unusual bravery and his ability to understand the criminal mind.

OCCUPATION: Police Inspector

PERSONALITY Javert is a conundrum of a man. Devoted to his job and the protection of the law, he can be intimidatingly grim and oddly personable. He has a flair for the dramatic, enjoying the thrill of disguising himself as various characters and tracking down his prey. Often completely unconcerned with the smaller figures involved in the cases he works on, his focus is on protecting those who need protecting, and catching those who need to be caught. He has a strange sense of humour, dry and ironic, and has taught himself to enjoy reading through long tedious practice. A private, deeply proud man, he finds it difficult to relate to others and prefers to stay withdrawn and alone where he cannot be maligned or hurt.

×QUIRKS He fiddles with small objects, is an incorrigible packrat, and gets very cold - which leads him to stand too close to the ovens. He has burned his coat-tails like this. He has developed an interest in poetry, and memorizes long passages. He spent several summers in his mid teens with a group of roving gypsies, and picked up a lot of their tricks and customs. Although they are no longer second nature to him, he speaks Roma fluently and sometimes finds himself slipping back into what he calls the old ways.

×SEXUAL ORIENTATION He's a virgin. At 52. I think it's safe to say that he has no idea.
