Not really a contest, per se, just a thread for posting some of our character's most memorable quotes. Be they funny, touching, sweet, tragic, or in any other way remarkable. You must post for characters other than your own, however. Make sure to link the thread from which the quote is extracted, as well as the name of the character who either said it, or from whose perspective the text is from. |

Croissants really were delicious; he wondered why they didn't have them in England. Perhaps they wouldn't last the journey, or there was a specially French type of flour. ----- JULES MONTAGUE, ESQ. Henry didn't pretend to think everyone in the world saw life the way he did, but he thought that there was no person who could question the fact that good and evil happened and rarely in equal parts. ----- DR. HENRY JEKYLL Indeed, the thought of Jekyll with a mandolin or some such romantic instrument outside a beautiful Parisian window almost made him laugh, which he managed to stifle into a sort of cough. ----- JULES MONTAGUE, ESQ. (A Remarkable Incident of Tea on Foreign Soil) Yes, three quotes. XD 'twas delightful. |

Gene was so engrossed in these and sundry other reflections that Leverett's question took him by surprise. A lump of something like potato went down the wrong way, and he coughed. "What... (a wheeze, a gasp, and whoopsiedaisie... there we are) What? Lamarque?" The world looked like potato at the moment, and Gene only knew with any certainty that Lamarque was not a potato. ----- EUGENE VIDOCQ (Leverett Franklin's Desk) |

He had to be true to his strength and courage and see this through... oh but god, what if that wasn't courage? What if that were Hyde, or at least the force within him that created Hyde, telling him to hold out so that more innocent people may die? DOCTOR HENRY JECKYLL It took a heart more wicked than Henry's to lie blandly and coolly about committing murder for any length of time. Edward on the other hand... well he had just the right heart and spirit. MISTER EDWARD HYDE Professional Courtesies Edited by Erical, Feb 10 2009, 04:21 AM.

"I wouldna be surprised if the whole building heard it when I did. He an' a bunch o' his mates were trompin' up the steps like they was a bunch of elephants." He nodded again. As if to reinforce just how important it was that they were tromping like elephants, and not any other large animal you'd care to come up with. No nicks so far. Well, at least he could give a good shave, murderous intentions aside. SWEENEY TODD This was a dream. A cruel dream. A dream where he saw himself in the enveloping tones of this older man, tones he, Todd, could never hope to speak himself. He could not. SWEENEY TODD A silence. The last words hanging in the air, ringing off the solitary nail he'd hammered, the last remnants of the shave. He stood with the law in his parlour, and he couldn't say a thing. SWEENEY TODD What the Hammer? What the Chain? I could go on... there are so many lovely ones! Edited by Erical, Feb 10 2009, 04:41 AM.

If there was one thing that Toby had noticed about Mr. Todd, it was that he wasn't the most joyous of people. He certainly didn't have the demeanor of a little kitten, that was for sure. But he did have a few of his own redeeming qualities. Unfortunately, they seemed to escape Toby's mind at the current time. So, rather than standing about, struggling to find the answer to the possibly unanswerable question, the young boy concluded that Mr. Todd was simply a generous person. Yes, that was it. Generous. ----- TOBIAS RAGG (Revitalized) |

Why did they have to die. Why had they not just taken more medicine, why had he not held his knife more carefully, cut more gently, done more to help. Why. So many why's shrouded in white sheets and wheeled in and out of operating theaters. --- Doctor Alec Durand Professional Courtesies "Julius Henry Montague, Esquire." Jules said automatically, deeming a bow unnecessary due to the proximity of his conversation partner. One day, perhaps, Jules would learn not to say his whole name in any introduction, but today was not to be that day --- Julius Henry Montague, Esquire. Woeful Chapeau Fabian spun around quite abruptly at that, "Do you? Bien. I think it's all poppycock," And he lifted a finger for emphasis, "But, I am not one to enforce my opinion upon others." (That was fudging the truth a bit.) --- Fabian DuChamps Woeful Chapeau |

A night creature, something that had grown in darkness like grass seeds rooted in old wet carpet in a locked room. Give you shivers. Alexis Tissot A small twitch of the lips, and he wound the crank with unsteady fingers, bent over in semi-darkness. Some mumbling. Goodbye Charles. Goodnight Lucy. Good evening, Judge, fancy a little twinge of piano? Hold still as I dismantle your jugular. Ah there we are. Sweeney Todd Skinny. But he’d do, surely. Perhaps Lovett had a lean course preparing somewhere. White meat, dark meat, old meat, young meat. Sweeney Todd If his mother had had half a mind, she wouldn't have given him a name that could go for either colour of lacy baby bedding, and God knows, maybe he'd be a soldier or an architect instead. Alexis Tissot No blood though. Lovely. Lovely. Lovely blood. Sweeney Todd The Twa Corbies Lovely. Lovely. Lovely... Edited by Erical, Feb 17 2009, 04:20 AM.

He grabbed for a peice, and chalked the words "Audacity, more audacity, always audacity." Bahorel didn't bother to quote it. He never did. The way he saw it, none of 'em would ever know the difference. Agrican Bahorel A Drunkard At A Loss Yes, her barber, because he was. Hers. And not this tiny slip of a senseless soubrette’s. Mrs Lovett Errands & Coincidental Encounters Things didn't always have to haunt, did they? Why couldn't he see water and think of water, rather than see water and think of drowning or how it ran a dull red upon his crashing into it, the blood on his face mixing with the Indian current. Sweeney Todd To Toby, Mr. Todd was like the uncle that no one spoke of. While his warm and fuzzy demeanor was like a magnet for children, he didn't seem to be too fatherly. Tobias Ragg Again, he questioned the child's mental capacity. He really must be a Moron. But the fact not being voiced aloud irritated Todd, and he felt the only way to deal with it was to keep realizing it for himself over and over again. He really must be a Moron. Sweeney Todd And, though she already had to be out of her mind to a degree in order to dispose of Parisian men through meat pies, she thought it best that she cling to whatever fragment of sanity she still possessed. Mrs Lovett There was something about the disgusting water than enthralled the young boy. It might have been because his mother repeatedly dropped him on his head as a child, and therefore everything amused him. Tobias Ragg Damn it! Stop thinking about that, Mr. Todd. Think about something else. something pleasant. Did he know of anything pleasant? No, not really, unless we count picturing judges gurgling and spurting blood. Sweeney Todd A swim? A swim? Oh God, he could have laughed. Just sat there laughing all the rest of the day. Because he could not. Swim, that is. And even if he could, who swam in their clothing? And even if he had a bathing dress, what sort of serial killer would take a jolly swim? He had a reputation to uphold, here. Sweeney Todd Revitalized Too many? |

"I'll get it, Melchi." His voice was soft, barely above a whisper. He took a step closer to the edge. Swinging his arms out in front of him, he prepared to dive into the water. The idea repulsed him slightly, as he hardly knew what was living in there. But the journal would be out of sight within the next few minutes, and he knew he had to move quickly. Looking back at Melchior, he sought out a few words of encouragement. Was there any hope of returning the journal to his closest friend? Only a fool's hope, perhaps. But it had already been determined that Moritz Stiefel, was in fact, a fool. MORITZ STEIFEL (ONE DAY ALL WILL KNOW) After three hours of conjugating Greek, it was a simple wonder that poor Moritz Stiefel hadn't lost his mind. MORITZ STEIFEL (ONE DAY ALL WILL KNOW) Though what ate at her more was that she was planning on feeding on the desperation of the down and out factory workers to satisfy her own lusty cravings. Janine could justify this new tactic easily enough: she was beginning to fear that seeing whores so often might leave her marked. Seducing a factory worker seemed much safer. JANINE SAISON (SINKING TO A NEW LOW) Edited by Melchi, Feb 22 2009, 07:05 PM.

Cos - well, it's been a while since I did a nice long tribute to all the glorious writing we get. XD "Oh--" A pitiable little moan-- "shit." The words tumbled out of their own accord, not particularly coherent or, for that matter, audible. So soft that it might have just been another thought. ALEXIS TISSOT Short breaths, shallow ones, and still painful with the flurry of doves apparently residing within the hollow of his ribcage. When they cut him up, that's when they'd all fly out, and poor doctor would have his own problem to handle. ALEXIS TISSOT Neither The Sun Nor Death He continued his ever important search of the open rooms, and nearly lost his skin when he saw a figure sitting somberly in a chair. He was not a particularly religious man, but he very nearly could have done with a few " May the power of Christ compel you,"s at that particular moment. LEVERETT FRANKLIN One Day More What does one do when one finds a dead body in the park? COSETTE A man with three arms, well that was certainly new. New and quite frightening. Goodness, Cosette, what sort of people you choose to relate to! No wonder then, that Papa is so very strict. COSETTE Would Daisies Be Pushing It? The doorway to the Corinthian was indeed imposing. But that was the whole point, wasn’t it? Oftentimes a man’s lust for alcohol or fine company helped him to face his fear of the door. And suddenly, once he was, for lack of a better word, safely inside, somehow the fear of that door made the outside world seem less desirable. LEVERETT FRANKLIN Where was this other man anyway? What did his shoes look like? How did one dress him for dinner? LEVERETT FRANKLIN They were drunk, as it would seem. But that was not what had caught his curiosity. Indeed, if drunkeness equated to uniqueness, then practically every man Jack in the place was a God damned, whole hog, three ringed circus. LEVERETT FRANKLIN The Corinthian Cynicism stung, but Grantaire's in particular rolled off him like water off a-- off whatever water rolls off of. FEUILLY And he cast a meaningful look towards the barman, or perhaps to one of the other scattered patrons; it just had to look meaningful. FEUILLY Introducing a sad-eyed (and quite pretty) young girl to a scene peopled by men was equivalent to setting down a fluffy white kitten in the midst of a group of children supposedly too old to care for such things. The odd look would shoot her way, of course, prying eyes, but Feuilly was quite captivated. Perhaps she could be their mascot, of sorts. FEUILLY It took all the will power Enjolras had (or at least, all the willpower he had in his right hand) to keep himself from bringing said right hand to cover his eyes and shield them from the spectacle in front of him. ENJOLRAS Trust their noble leader to know what to do in the case of a teary-eyed girl. If Enjolras knew what girls were, that was. Besides smaller, oddly-dressed men prone to hysterics. FEUILLY Marius? Who? I don't know a Marius... COSETTE One would almost think that Enjolras had been scotch-guarded at birth were it not for a) Scotch Guard would not be invented for well over 100 years (and Absinthe Guard only created more stains) and b)Nothing even remotely resembling sex could have ever been associated with the man, not even for the sake of creation. No need to bother resisting, threat or no threat. He whimpered a bit, a little worm of noise digging its way out of his throat, at the impact of having even gentle hands strive to roll him over. The instinct was to go ragdoll limp, minimise possible damage (this from a boy who'd fallen down plenty of flights of stairs in his time making a hasty exit from territories unwanted) but nothing seemed to be following orders particularly well. Like a beetle on its back. ----- ALEXIS TISSOT Pain was a very old and dear friend. The kind of friend who would pop around for drinks after a long day at work. They could spend hours chatting together over a nice wine - comfortable and serene in each other's presence. The pugnacious fellow in coat-tails swung his legs to and fro on a mental fence and muttered sulkily, 'Drop him, drop him drop him drop him...' Oh shut up. ----- DR. ALEC DURAND (NEITHER THE SUN NOR DEATH) Jesu the little child baby with the big disk on his head. Octavian had always though that the disk must get heavy. Nasty big cold gold thing, not soft or gentle. Baby-children were soft, gentle, sweet... milky sticky things, shouldn't have great big cold disks all heavy and hard and cold. Shouldn't have to sit with their arms out, half naked. ----- OCTAVIAN ROYER The hand came free from his mouth, the thumb torn and bleeding. She looked it over, gently caressing it in her hands. She might have kissed it, if he had been a small boy and not a very confused man. ----- COSETTE Sometimes the men brought him a papillion with crumpled wings, and he would feed it on hash and sugar until it died in a moment of ecstasy sublime. Was that what they did for him? Was he their papillion? ----- OCTAVIAN ROYER (WOULD DAISIES BE PUSHING IT?) |

Also, I've decided that it's probably best to start a new list once we get up to a certain number of quotes, since Zetaboards only allows a certain amount of characters, including code, to be placed in the header of the board. Annoying, but perhaps nice to see some brand new ones instead? We of coarse will still have them all here in this thread for us to enjoy! :D So just to let you all know, in case you don't see some of the previous quotes popping up there anymore. |

Haven't done this for far too long. ^_^ Then again, Meg had honestly believed that she could fix a tear in a sock. Socks were simple. Meg was simple. No, Meg was magnificent. That's why she had killed the sock. -Meg The TRIP to Her Epilogue It would be just his luck to be run down by a carriage right here. Cut down in his youth, leagues away from home, and dressed perfectly in the height of urban fashion. -Herbert From the outside, the opera house didn't look like a den of iniquity, but you could never tell. The French didn't have to advertise these things. -Herbert New Boots, and the Gathering of Moss At most he noticed her eyelashes spasming, and thought such a thing might make one frightfully dizzy. -Sweeney Todd It was that simple: it would happen. He would learn to love her if she had to beat him upside the head with a roller until it happened. -Mina Mooney He had trouble processing that too. What did she mean by it? Children? Baggage? Sexual diseases? Ailing parents? Good Lord. -Sweeney Todd Hmm, no. Men were not vultures. He decided on either wolves or something else a bit dog-like, but had little other time to pin-point, as he was being spoken to again. -Sweeney Todd Neighbours of Insidious Occupations Though he supposed one needed to be at least somewhat formidable in order to cleave and cleave and cleave and cleave the son of your daughter-in-law's stepsister's brother from next door who's gone missing for twelve weeks now. Sweeney Todd For he knew that behind her eyes was an eruption waiting to happen. She'd whip out her rolling pin and begin beating him to the ground. And there he would meet his end. Oh calamity. Sweeney Todd He couldn't know that she was lingering just for the sake of lingering because he was shirtless. -Mrs Lovett "Correct me if I'm wrong, but these days an accomplice to murder seems much more precious than a bruised butcher's wife." -Mrs Lovett Tempus Frangit They might tear, or worse still leave her tangled and immobile like a fly in a web. Then the mad man would certainly eat her, Queen of the Fae or not. -Babbette Red and Black, Violet and BLue |

He had come to the conclusion that Babette was some kind of sorceress that had turned his insides into wood and set him aflame. Very good cover, he must admit. He waited for the flames to finally break through his skin. Odd thing was, the burn was not unpleasant at all. In fact, it felt rather nice. Perfect. She had also turned him into a masochist. -Bruce Toussaint The Sea of Smiles |
