Serrabeth

Beth's descent into a family of madness and treachery began when she was only one year old. Her father attempted to foist her onto his wife, Maugritte, as an unknown child he'd found lost and alone. However, his wife wasn't as much an idiot as he may have wanted. It was obvious to see that Serrabeth was his, as they shared the same bright copper hair that tended to curl, they both had the same sharp, green eyes and stubborn chin, the same perked nose. However, Maugritte took the girl in, thinking it would keep her husband there with his family, but his love and longing for an exotic Koada'Dal bard was too strong to keep him chained with a cold, aloof, and very proud woman. Beth had been only seven when he left. When before she was tolerated by an unwilling mother, now she was despised regularly and always reminded that she was an outsider, an unwanted, useless. And it was up to her sister, Ellisbetha, to remind her that she was loved and cared for.

Beth never could find happiness, much as she tried, and her first attempt had been at the tender age of twelve. An elderly Feir'dal visited the village and took special interest in telling the young girl hundreds of stories that fueled a multitude of desires - from exploring Norrath, to finding wild adventures, taking down orcs for their teeth or gnoll claws, but most of all to learn others' stories and share them as he'd done. Maugritte was repulsed by the idea, of course, and told Beth the notion was utterly ridiculous, but it only fueled the girl more into attempting to chase that dream. However, it was cut short on the boat to Freeport, when she'd attempted to entertain the other passengers with a grand story about a paladin's difficult battle with the Dragon Vox. In her excitement, she forgot herself, and the captain of the ship found her, deposited her back onto the docks.

She attempted the streets of Qeynos next, bedraggled, dirty and often slept under a large oak planted in the northern section of the city. On her third day, she was apprehended and forced back home. If her mother had been cruel before, now she was harsh with her criticism on Beth, calling her a degenerate and waste. And again, Ellisbetha reminded her that she was special, had done something brave for herself. From then on, Beth began to strengthen in resolve, intending to leave the village at the nearest chance, which came at the age of fifteen. Her first romance.

He was certainly a flirt, certainly romantic, and Beth had never had any male interested in her. And so, she fell hard and fast into infatuation. He spoke of the moon, of giving it to her, she was more than ready to believe he could stand that tall and reach that high. And suddenly, one day, it changed. When before, he tried to steal kisses from her, now he sneered. When his arms had once been open to embrace her, now his hands were cold and rough, ready to push her away. It left her wounded, confused, until two very important bits of information came up. First, they were to be given land and title. Second, the boy she'd wanted for her very own had become guard and lover to Maugritte. Whatever softness Beth may have had now hardened until even her sister wasn't able to touch her emotions. She left to learn what little she was able, but was always hauled back unwillingly by Maugritte's guard in order to keep the family from being tarnished. A lady Beth could never be, but Ellis ... she would become favored and expect to marry high, as her brother had.

Maybe Maugritte did it to cause a friction between the sisters, hoping to spawn jealousy. Instead, there was pity for her older sister to be dressed up and danced about in front of suitors constantly, when once there'd been hope of having that of marrying for love. It did spur Beth to attempt escape continuously, sometimes out in the wild to live on her own and learn basic survival skills, other times to meet with interesting indivuduals - one who taught her the basics of how to work a bow, how to shoot, and how to train her eye, and others ... well, irritating Maugritte became a favorite past time. If there was anything the stuffy old crone wanted, Beth didn't want to do it. It became a game of sorts, how far she could get by before Maugritte could find a button to push.

At eighteen, she finally had her last laugh, when Ellisbetha did what she couldn't. One murky, heated night, her older sister ran away and Maugritte was infuriated because she had no idea where Ellis might have gone. Beth may have been a nuisance, but she had tracking abilities, and she was sent after her sister. Of course, Beth didn't exactly go after her sister, but used this newfound freedom to explore Antonica's wildness. Months later, when her sister finally allowed herself to be found, Beth was able to act as guard to Ellis. And even in that, she intentionally failed Maugritte until the woman had decided enough was enough. For eighteen years, she'd raised the disappointment, and was Beth even thankful? No. Did Beth even deserve the family name? No. So, when it came out that Beth was expecting, Maugritte couldn't have been more overjoyed. A plan to get rid of the child, a send off to a well known friend who could 'accidentally' poison Beth, and that would be that.

Except it wasn't. Because Beth chose to keep the child and suddenly disappeared from Qeynos completely, along with the man Maugritte had hired to watch over Ellis in hopes of spurring a relationship between the two and diverging the older girl's attention away from a man Maugritte deemed too common for their new title. Suddenly Qeynosian guards were on the look out for Beth and she knew it, which spurred her to get as far away from Antonica as possible, and hopefully into the hidden masses of the new trading company she'd heard of, tucked away in Gorowyn.
