I've not heard anything in particular so I'm asking; is there a set plan on how OHTC is going to recruit? Word of mouth? Forums, if so which ones? The in-game recruiting? If so, we'll not show up since we're so very small. Personally I'm not keen on the in-game recruiting screen but that's a personal feeling only. As a member when I'm asked about the guild I give the person a very basic outline and send them to the website. So far I've had one random person ask me and two now ex-AR members, both who have gone elsewhere for whatever reasons. But I know that I myself have found one of the best ways to find a guild is ask someone I may randomly group with or random RP with, about their guild....if they're happy with it, what kind of guild, etc. etc. As much info as I can drag out of the person but I only do that if I have had a positive experience with the person and they RP with me, even if it's just a quick RP hello, goodbye in-between a fight or group. I tend to not RP much WHILE grouped as many RPers also don't, but will during a big lull in the action or when arriving or leaving. So for me, between that and how they behave within the group, I may then ask them about their guild. It's how I found AR, via one of Ironpie's alts in fact. I've also found a guild via a posting Looking For Guild. I posted on several forums, SOE's, GuildPortals and one or two other places that have an area for that sort of thing. The replies I got ranged from a public sort of form letter looking response to a private message left on the forum to an in-game /tell or mail. This though requires at least one person, preferably more IMO, to take on the responsibility of locating and reading these forums. Someone who I'd think would be an official recruiter for the guild, at least that's who has always contacted me when I've done that sort of thing (I've done it twice since I've been in the game and both times were a very positive experience and outcome). I know we have recruiters so perhaps you've got all this already in place and on the move but since I've not heard or seen anything I thought I'd ask. At least this will make me, a general member, aware of what our procedures are so that if I'm approached I know clearly what I should and shouldn't do. Edited to add: I also am just downright curious as to if there is a set idea of how big OHTC wants to grow to. Or if there's no limit but if there's a pace you wish to set, so many members but not before we hit guild level xx or something like that? I know some guilds do set these sorts of guidelines, always subject to revision of course as the guild changes and grows. Edited by Aylora, Jun 15 2009, 01:11 PM.

I think I'mma wait for Kalikins or Kogeykins to reply before I stick my toes in the water. ![]() EDIT:: Kalikins just pointed this out to me, and though I'd read it, it was lost in the black hole that is my mind till she said something. ::::So, posted by Kaliet:::: Here we go, the official guide on how to get people into our little cul-er I mean guild. Recruitment is a big key in maintaining an organization like ours, and hopefully this will help all you officer types when it comes to how to help us grow. I'm all up for any advice or adjustments to the following as my background comes from scrapping people out of the wood work and I'm not used to a target rich environment such as a dedicated RP server. 1. Reply to Applications OOCly Always always always reply to applicants!! If we want people to see we're interested in having them, having a few replies on apps makes us seem more active, more friendly and more welcoming. 2. Track 'em down on /who! If we don't hear from someone in a few days, seek them out and initiate contact! We're just starting and need to get as many regulars as we can! 3. Update Application! If someone gets an invite, mark on the application OOCly that they were invited! Please! What this does is not only make it easier for us to track who we need to rope in, but also shows potential members that we follow up and take recruitment seriously. 4. Channel Spam While I do not like channel spam, to be honest it was what got me into my first RP guild here so it works! Although I don't have a script to use already written, I am open to suggestions, but if you choose to post on channels, just be creative. Recruitment "Interview" Guidelines Although it is not stated as such in the How to Join guide, the first in game contact between a recruiter and an applicant is really a mini interview. When you establish contact, you want to say the following things. How you say it is up to you and how your character is but these are the basics of the process- You were given their application to look over, and everything looks good, but you have a few questions. What do they hope to get from the company? What can they offer the company? The company is a neutral organization that takes all types, are they okay with that? If not, will they at least keep to the charter? If everything is answered well, pass them the invite, tell them oocly about the ooc channel and also to check the forums to review the requirements to advance in the company. :::: So there's a statement to go on.

What Em's posted was the guidey I have in the officer forum ^^; Right now I am trying to draft posts and such for forums, but to be honest I'm not too sure where to post and what they should look like. I already have the in-game recruiter thing set up, I just need to start writing posts x_X |

You'd said Reylin had agreed to write up stuff for the Town Square, is that still so, or has the poor sweet's recent issues halted that?[half directed at Rey-Rey himself.] I'd be willing to take it up if he's not up to it. |

If you're willing to draft something up Emin, feel free to post it here. If we all work on something we can look at all of em and take the parts we like out of each to make a super awesome post +1. Also, could someone come up with a list of what forums we should be posting on? In FFXI we only really had Zamsince SE didn't use official forums, |

Okay I signed up at the Town Square thing and wrote up the registration bit to be added to their list and this is what I have so far-- Guild Name: Open Hand Trading Co Server: Antonia Bayle Guild URL: http://s1.zetaboards.com/OHTC Roleplay Style: High Alignment: Neutral Brief Description: The Open Hand Trading Company is a neutral business that takes on all types of jobs from saving kittens from trees to high profile assassinations. Additional Information/Detailed description: No one knows who formed the company or why, but it exists today as an organization that is known for playing both sides of the fence and aids all cities through taking on jobs. Part trading company supplying crafting and trade goods and part mercenary guild finding and assigning jobs to our members, the Open Hand Trading Co has a place for anyone from anywhere. We are an RP heavy guild with a weekly tavern (The Virtue in Vice) that runs story arcs and both RP and combat group events. Thoughts? And for recruitment posts do we want to make an actual recruitment flier image? |

~~~~~ Across Norrath, in each of the cities - good, neutral, evil, it didn't seem to matter - a cloaked man made an appearance. He leapt up on a ledge or a wall or a platform, settled back on his heels, and called out. "Hoy-oh!" Sometimes multiple times, to catch the attention of passersby. And once he seemed content with the crowd he had gathered, he'd pace back and forth, arms spread, face hidden by a hood. "Greetings there, citizens! Nice day, yeah?" His voice tinged with a grin, the man would reach calmly into a satchel at his hip and pull out a stack of cards, flicking them gently down to the people surrounding him. ///INSERT PRETTEH IMAGE OF A BUSINESS CARD HERE\\\ THAT MAY OR MAY NOT GET MADE DEPENDING ON IF PEOPLE LIKE THIS AT ALL While the onlookers inspected the cards, he continued. "Open Hand Trading Company - probably ain't heard of it, yeah? Well that's what I'm here to change, my friends! - We're a business, a company, and a good one at that! But I ain't just here to boast, yasee, I'm here with an offer!" His hands shifted, to gesture widely down at the crowd. "We're lookin' for employees, you see. Qualified guys'n'gals in need of a good job and willin' to work for it." The man's chin lifted, and his hood shifted enough to flash a bright, friendly grin at the crowd. "Or, yanno.. if some of you out there have a job that needs doin' by a company like this one.. well. We can fix somethin' up, yeah?" He twisted, clasped his hands behind his back. "Either way, keep that card you've got now nearby, yeah? Might need it some day. - Open Hand Trading Co.! Look us up, yanno!" The man leapt off the other side of the ledge, and disappeared. then like OOC info. I dunno. I was bored, so I wrote this up. *EMBARRASSED RUNS AWAY* |
Emin, I like your write up... I'd add the address for the tavern. Also, if you wish to have folks drop by it, which IMO should be encouraged because often that's how people size up a guild, post the Friday night time. If not, then just the address so they can pop by on an off time and just look it over. I hate channel SPAM myself and I'd never consider a guild that did that. But that's a personal choice. Obviously it worked for Emin! I wholeheartedly agree with follow through on an app, in game and in the forum. Also with the follow-up if you've not heard from the person. Even a Norrath mail isn't out of the question I feel. I'm very much for having someone(s) dedicated to combing the forums where people put up their the "Looking for a Guild" posts. I really liked, when I did it each time, getting both a public reply AND a private one, either on the forum in a PM or even better, in-game via a /tell or Norrath mail. Often the PMs on forums aren't noticed right away and some sites tend to lose PMs or deliver them terribly slow. SOE's forums for awhile were a mess with regard to PM and I received PMs in reply to a Looking For a Guild post, more than a month later...long after I'd found a guild! It is a job though that takes dedication, thoroughness and a real commitment to doing it every single day. I do hope we don't grow too fast. That can be a death knell for a guild IMO. Also, in the desire to grow, and also to show up on the in-game recruiting screen, some guilds take on every single person who asks for an invite, even if they don't put in an app or whatever steps the guild has in place, and also keep on dead wood. This way they show as a large guild, move up the roster and so on. But it can really screw things up too for a guild to grow like that. I also hate when a guild keeps people on who've not logged in forever and ever, especially with no reason! I myself can understand the need to not be in game for awhile but there's almost no reason to not give the guild a heads up if that's going to happen or is happening. Whenever I've considered a guild I've always looked at their roster on EQ2 Players and when I see that a good chunk of the members haven't logged in for a very long time it turns me off. You should see Roses N Thorns... some people on there that haven't logged in for two years!!! When recently asked WHY it was said that the leaders, who are never around, wish it that way and it started out because they wanted to keep showing up on the in-game recruiting screen. YIKES! Do we have any idea how big we want to be? Or will it be played by ear, which isn't a bad idea if done with the eyes wide open as the guild grows? Call me extra careful but why not have a good idea ahead of time of how to approach these things is how I think about it. Oh, another thing I was thinking about last night; any plans to meet in game with potential members or new members, especially those you don't know from a prior guild or other in-game activities? Who will do this? Can any member do this or should just the recruiters, officers, leaders do this? Most prospective members don't care if this is done or not, if not required, but some do wish it and prefer it to not be a general meeting at the tavern but more of a one on one type thing. I tend to that if I don't really know anyone in the guild I'm interested in. This gives me a feel for their RP and also shows me if they're truly interested in me as a member. The reason the tavern setting doesn't work for this, IMO, is that it's usually too busy otherwise. However, I do know that VK handles their face to face at the tavern but downstairs, or used to anyway, with one of their leaders...at least with me it was (Spindel). I liked that approach although there was a problem with the tavern being SO busy that he had distractions and apologized twice for them until I just said, let's do this another time. Anyway..... my thoughts, questions and comments.
I find actual in person recruitment meetings to be trying on both parties, and prefer to have people talked through in tells. The interview guidelines for officers was posted by Emin that I wrote up and it basically is just a few IC questions to make sure people have some idea of who their character is and that they can RP. As for how big... I honestly have no idea... in FFXI we had to scrape and pursue anyone with ANY interest since with no RP servers we were lucky to get and keep about 10-15 people steady. My goal is to get enough people that there is a lot of RP and try to discourage people not interested in RP from just hanging around. I love socializing but this is meant to be a RP heavy guild and people who are friends of members that don't RP or new people that just want a place to hang out I would like to discourage. |
I think the idea of growth being flexible is a good idea. This is a huge population and we certainly can be picky, meaning within the guidelines you've set up..which I like, but we'll not have to scrape for members. I think that ya'll will know if things are growing too big or too fast, or both. I'm wondering why you dislike the face to face meeting? Although I'm a fan of text RP, I honestly prefer it most of the time, I do think that if a prospective member requests it that we should try to do so, at least SOME trusted member should meet with the person. I don't think you'll get many who will request this and I don't think it should be a requirement, it's very time consuming if it becomes a requirement. Heck, I remember nights when there were two leaders on and SEVERAL recruiters along with myself, when I was head of recruiting for a RP guild, and we were ALL being inundated with /tells. If we had to actually MEET with each of those we'd have gone completely nuts. As it was it was overwhelming at times and we actually had to each take time outs, nights off and that sort of thing so none of us got burnt out. Here I go with more questions but they arise from prior experiences so bear with me please.. what about someone who has never RP'd, like our dear Cala? If they approach us and are honest about never RP'ing in the game, I do know Cala has extensive table top RP experience and it's translated exceptionally well to the game IMO, do we discourage them? Outright decline? Give them a trial, perhaps based on some RP with them either in /tell or face to face? Maybe have them come by the tavern on an off night with a few of us there to RP with the person? I ask this because I have had this happen more times than I thought would. USUALLY it turned out quite well but I can think of a few times when the person might have been sincere about wanting to learn to RP but it sure didn't show up that way and eventually it was a disaster to one degree or another. I'm looking forward to new members in OHTC! I think there are some exciting, fun, interesting things to come. Edited by Aylora, Jun 16 2009, 12:11 PM.
