"Tactical miscalculation is not the same as not thinking about the consequences." Alex giggled as he laid on the freezing stone, eyes never moving away from the smoke and the stars beyond.

"I overestimated the explosion, no one had briefed me that the guard post had explosives inside, this was a horrible accident that I had no part in." Alex coughed as he explained his voice monotone and grating, grinding against the stones like steady water.

"If I was properly brief none of this would have happened, this leads me to extrapolate that I was lied to and this was someones plan. My job was to level the guard post, no one said anything about GOD DAMN EXPLOSIVES!" Alex's voice cracked as the monotone dissolved in fury that rattled the stones around him.

"Whoever lied to me is going to die." Alex snapped again, his voice filled with anger that seethed with an unholy fury. "Whoever did this is going to die is ways that are not even physically possible!" The angered blond kipped to his feet, his emerald eyes lit with green fire as tears stained his cheeks...

"Well, thanks to the miscalculation, this boy is an orphan, and this kitten is a stray. I wasn't quick enough to save anyone else," Naomi replied with a sigh.

She looked down at the child; he was a little auburn-haired boy, with a fairly clear but pale complexion. Soot dirtied his cheeks, and he was breathing shallowly. The kitten in her other arm was medium brown with dark stripes. An unremarkable tabby, with the exception of it's brilliant yellow eyes.

"So, what do I do with these?"

Alexander looked the the two beings appraisingly and shrugged. "Bring them along, I do not care. You can be responsible for them if you wish." The blond wiped his cheeks before starting off towards the Inn, mentally checking over his records on who had hired him for the task. It had been an intermediary...damn. That meant what? Another two days of travel...damn it to hell.

"Well I know were we go next at least." The man spat through barred teeth grinding them in anger and agitation.

Naomi looked up at Alex with mild surprise when he suggested she care for the child and the cat. But really, she could see no other option. The orphanage, from what Alex had said before punishing her, was not well enough equipped to care for another child.

Sighing, she followed him closely. The child stirred in her arms, and she looked down at him hopefully, but he did not awaken.

"Where to next, then?" Naomi asked, keeping up with some difficulty due to her new burden.

"Flayeta." Alex grinned as he twisted his head back to lock insane emerald eyes with those of the woman carrying the child.

"And then we find a weasel and follow it to its den, then we are going to smoke them all out." Alex's head swung like a pivot back to normal as the child stirred.

"Do you have a name little one?" The blond sighed as he pressed through the throng of people once more, the panic no better. The sudden display of magic leaving the people agitated and scared as the smokey soot cloud above parted to reveal a shinning half-moon and beautiful stary skyscape. Silver sheets blanketing the city from high above.

As if on command, the child's eyes snapped open. They were a pale gray color, with light blue and green flecks near the pupils.

"Devlin," the boy answered automatically. His head rolled to the side, and he smiled with relief.

"Alice is safe," he mumbled, as he closed his eyes again. He showed no concern for the fate of his parents, oddly enough, but was very relieved about his kitten.

Naomi smiled, and readjusted the boy in her arms.

"Why would someone want you to cause so much destruction to begin with?" she asked Alex curiously.

"I do not know, but you can be sure I intend fully to find him, wring his neck and punt him to the mainland." Alex sighed as he bobbed his head in agreement with himself, the people around slowly scattering as the guards of the city, the little left at least, struggled to restore order to the city. Their bellowing cries echoing and mingling with the cries and sobs of the citizens.

"Devlin huh? How old are you?" Alex struggled to make small talk and suppress the anger that swelled in his breast. Another Orphan, another forsaken orphan, DAMN IT. Alex's face twisted in anger and disgust with himself as he press on through the crowd closing with the Inn, who was most certainly doing a brisk business in selling beds for the people without homes.

"Eight," Devlin replied, causing Naomi to look down at him in surprise; she had severely misjudged his age. Though in her defense, she hadn't seen many children in a long time, and he WAS small for his age.

The cat named Alice squirmed out of Naomi's hand, and climbed up her arm by digging her claws into Naomi's skin. Before Naomi had a chance to react, the kitten had already clambered across her shoulders and into the arms of the little boy. The creature purred loudly.

"Well, I guess I can help you kill the man, if you need it. Anyone who intentionally causes this," Naomi said, gesturing to the panic around her, "deserves death."

The claw marks in Naomi's arm were bleeding, but the bleeding stopped fairly quickly. She smiled down at the child.

"You're older than you look," she said gently.

"You smell like dog," Devlin replied bluntly; he could smell Max on her.

"It is probably my Fox." Alex sighed as he pushed through the crowds into the Inn. "He should be in here sleeping."

Alex trounced through the throng of people pushing open the opening for Naomi to follow behind.

"I also have quite a specimen of a dog." Alex smirked as he opened door to the room the massive wolf laying still sleeping on the bed, a red furred max curled up beside him.

"Damn my bed has been dog napped." Alex's face flattened in annoyed irony at the spectacle of the fox licking the back of the wolf's head.

"BATH!" Alex shouted grinning evilly as Max shot into the air in confusion and paranoia. "Huwaha?!" The fox snapped and yelp as it glanced around in horror.

"Wow, your fox talks? So does Alice!" Devlin said excitedly as Naomi set him and the kitten down in the room, "I didn't think other animals talked."

The kitten known as Alice didn't say anything, though Naomi thought for a second that it glared at the child. It wiggled it's way out of Devlin's grip so that it could groom itself on the floor.

Naomi, in a moment of dog-like playfulness, ran and leaped at the fox on the bed.
