I contact a friend of mine who is a 1st grade teacher in the collier school system. This is what she had to offer: "Well, I don't know much about it because Journeys was a private school. All I can say, is that if they do want to put him in public school, the public school must accomodate his IEP: Individual Education plan (any students who has special needs should have one). With young students it may also be a 504plan. Public schools, unlike private, are forced to follow these plans. What should be discussed is what is the 'least restictive' environment for him, and by law the state must provide them with that. (There can be some arguments about what that environment may be; many automatically assume that is the regular classroom with some push in assistance, but that is not always the case.) In Collier county, beginning this year we are also implementing a new plan that will be mandated by the state starting the '10-'11 school year. In this plan it requires teachers to provide interventions in small groups or even 1-1 for students who have shown to not meet grade level bench marks. (remember me talking about RTI...response to intervention) Chances are that most students with special needs would not be meeting bench marks, so they would also be recieving these special intervetions. Of course, since this is the first trial year, it will look very different at different schools. Wherever they go they need to ask a lot of questions and make sure they are really getting everything that they require. (There have been court cases over the years for special needs kids; most law regarding this is in the IDEA (Individual disability education act), which has just been revised not to long ago.) Hope this helped a little. The key is know your rights, (but as for Journeys, private schools can close without concern for the students because the public schools must take them in.)" |
