So, since I'm looking into a Word Bearers army and looking at a little background, at what point does a 1st acolyte become a Dark apostle and when do they get the right to use a Crozius?
Is it as soon as tHey become an Acolyte?
When they become a dark Apostle and have to use regular power weapons until then?

I heard that a warband is split when a dark Apostle is 'created' how does this usually go down. Amicable split, each trooper deciding their own loyalties?

How does a new Dark Apostle come into being?

First Acolytes don't get to use a Dark Crozius. That belongs solely to the Dark Apostle. Until then they can use whatever other weapon they please, one First Acolyte mentioned in the Dark Apostle series carries around a two handed power maul - which is close but not quite a crozius. Normally I'd say this is bendable, it's 40k after all, but seeing how the Crozius is such a status symbol I really can't see a First Acolyte wielding a Dark Crozius, that right belongs to the Dark Apostles alone.

A Host - as that is what the Word Bearers organize themselves into, Hosts - only split if the new Dark Apostle assumes his title peacefully. Often, the First Acolyte kills his master and then assumes his role, thus avoiding the need for a split.

If the warband does divide its forces, I'm guessing that the more senior Dark Apostle and his Coryphaus - the military leader of a Host - decided how this happens and who gets what. It is also possible that the council that swears in the new Dark Apostle chooses how the Host is split.

A new Dark Apostle is typically created in one of two ways. One, he kills his old master, assuming control and earning the title of Dark Apostle, after all if he killed his former teacher than surely he was superior, or at least the thought process goes. Two, a First Acolyte is simply deemed ready and given a number of bodies by the Legion, often from the Host he graduated from. There are obviously other methods, such as if the Coryphaus gains enough favor from the Dark Gods and so when both the First Acolyte and Dark Apostle are killed in action, he may take over as the new master of the Host.
I tend to remember things off the top of my head as opposed to checking, so please excuse and correct any official fluff mistakes I make. A lot of it also personal interpretation and theory, so feel free to disagree as well, I won't mind
