Online Campaign Anyone?

Despite parting ways with GW I'm looking at reviving the Battlegroup Carmine (40K Imperial group that traces its origins back to the 12th Army Group of Medusa V fame) by getting fresh blood in and seeing if I can kick off the online campaigns that used to be popular a few years ago.

Some of the older hands here may remember Rorian IX and perhaps the Darmonica one I ran when the Battlegroup was in its previous incarnation. Theres a great many lessons that can be learned from those and others, lessons that I hope will help.

I have a few basic ideas in my head regarding a possible campaign (theres one or two incomplete ones kicking around);

*Keep It Simple! Seen quite a few point scoring systems used in the various campaigns I've taken part or been involved in, a few seemed to be more complicated than needed and with some there was issues. To that end I'll use a simple 123 system; 3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss.

Nice and simple.

*Keep it Dynamic; Probably a curse of many campaigns that ended up becoming 'static' and resulted in interest dying off as it wore on, to hopefully get round this I'm thinking more off a 'rolling' campaign. Basically part of the campaign (say 1-2 weeks) will take place in one area, then move onto another area....hopefully I'll be able to work in player actions say if a certain faction wins in one area then that'll effect the next area (ie Chaos corruption or 'Nid infestation).

*Get a dedicated team; Another issue I've encountered is trying to get a team of admins to run a campaign, also ties into keeping things simple in case a replacement admin is needed.

~

That my thoughts for now, I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

It sounds interesting to me. But excuse me for my obstinous but how would we do this? I just don't understand how we would be able to play games of 40k online.

Sure somebody else could explain this better than me but basically its like the old global campaigns GW used to do, you play games of 40K as normal and then post up the results and battle report online.

Whilst I'm fully aware that some people may just post fictitious results (sadly something that can't be avoided) I generally hope (as has been the case in previous campaigns of this nature) that good sportsmanship will prevail and people will try to be honest, after all its generally about having fun.

I'll try and see if I can dig up some old links, not sure how many of the forums/sites are still up.

I've been in more than a few and would happy to do a few more.

But with a points scheme then numbers of players = win

If your looking at reviving a forum. Could I make a suggestion.
Battlegroup Carmine isn't that numerous to revive. I'd take this opprtunity to make a new site, on invisions zetaboard host. Get established members first and then make the campaign. Even if you do decide to revive Battlegroup Carmine it will almost be like a new forum. My experience of making this place is that it takes time and effort and at times its been awfully close to sinking away to internetz oblivion with lack of activity.

The internet campaign is a nice hook once the forum is established, but first you need to figure out how your going to hook new members. It isn't like 8 years ago when you just had to make a forum and they will come. You need banners and help, get the banners out in places like warseer and Boot Camp the big Guard forums.

Once you have those new members, and your cracking at making the new campaign. Don't just let the old Carmine members automaticly assume command and start dictating orders and plans. Give the neewbies the chance to discuss how they want to run, either democracy or elect commanders to organise companies etc

That's all for now. But I'd love the chance to post a few more campaign results, may even be able to help you make a few bits family life permitting.

This sounds interesting and I would definately love to throw my nids in there but Eetion to me it sounds like we can't do it here? I mean what are we saying we really have to do? Just play games at our local game store and post results that help the campaign? If that is what it truly is then why can't we do it here?:

I don't have any advice on this, so I'll just keep an eye out to see how this progresses ;)

We could reasonably host 1.

But in my experience it tends to involve a lot of clutter and maps and involves lots of forums, a nid forum, a guard, orks, tau etc so rather than spam up an entire forum, a campaign site was made and used to host all the maps and story line. Have faction war forums to plan in.

Its so much easier for anyone participating in the campaign just to join a campaign site rather than dozens of people join say here who really don't wish to contribute to this forum. So we wouldn't be asked to join Battlegroup Carmine but our members and theirs just join a site made just for the campaign, and after its done the sites closed down leaving both here and battle group carmine spam free.

We are Death, the bringers of despair.
My interest has been roused.

I've tried hosting my own campaign with mates, but always grew bored due to us not being able to meet up regularly. This sounds like great fun though, I'd just post all results I get from my gaming club (I'll try not to just play the guy I always beat, in the interest of sportsmanship ;) ).

Though, in all fairness, this page could use some "streamlining". If you were to restructure and merge the more unused parts into the more used parts and make room for a new part for the online campaign that would probably take care of some of the redundancy that would surely be happening otherwise in the posting(like people posting their armies and stuff on both forums)...

Do you have stats on what parts are the most/least used? I haven't taken care of a forum in a few years, but I could possibly help if you need it...though with zetaboards restrictions I don't know how much help I could be...
