Merthyr Power Crystal of Sy'Dora, last known operating Merthyr crystal

Charles Merthyr is the world's most renowed scientist. His humble origins from Costara, living as cobbler were soon changed when by chance was given an opportunity to assist one of the most talented archeologists in the world. Originally getting a position as a servant, his intrigue had propelled him. Nearly 6 years of excavating ruins and mappinng unknown places had given him the experience and knowledge he needed, he enrolled the following year in the University of Costara. It was here that he oficially studied geology and archeology, which he would use later on expenditions to Xan.

At the time Xan was a relatively uninteresting place, with few visiting there due to fear of death. However, Merthyr concluded that it was an impossibility for three to have once been civilization here without real trace of their existence. It was during one of his excavations where he a rather large gem, roughly the size of a lunch box. Intrigued he noticed primitive machines nearby, and like most things in his life by chance he set it to operate. It was an astonishing moment for him, and after further research he concluded that Merthyr unlike other fuel resources is not spent, and rather it emits its own energy through and unknown process.

It was after his return to Costara that he would begin a series of tests that would make him the most famous person on Amador. While he is credited entirely for this research, he actually was teamed with his colleague Dr. Amadeus von Thakris, from the University of Patria. An engineer by trade, von Thakris was the actual constructor for the devices and vehicles that would test the properties of Merthyr. The duo would create a series of engines that used the unlimited energy potential of the stone to power simple devices. In comparison, the same sized stone used in their experiments could power one fifth of the city of Patria endlessly while it was used to move a wooden block.

The two continued their experiments while at the same time looking for other stones to see if the properties of the first were unique. The second and last expedition Merthyr would launch on Xan would gain them a discovery of three stones of varying sizes, interestingly enough they were all already cut and shaped. Experiments continued and progress was made, with the emphasis being placed on the construction of the harnessing mechanisms to power more advanced and sophisticated machines. However, there was a schism between the two. Merthyr had wished to share his discoveries with the world and use the research to creating things to benefit the people, Van Thakris however was convinced that Merthyr was a perfect military weapon and that they should sell their research to the highest bidders. This fued ended with Merthyr publishing his discoveries, leaving von Thakris from mention, it is from here that the stones gained the name sake of their discoverer Charles Merthyr.

Angered, von Thakris stole two of the remaining stones and returned to his home. Merthyr, would gather his friends and colleagues and established the Brotherhood of the Stars and was never heard from again. von Thakris, obesssed with his belief in the power of the stones created a massive engine that he placed within the confines of his yacht. The power of the crystal itself was able to give him lift, and it was here that he developed the first airship. Although a weak design, the Ferrian Military were convinced that the Airships were the way of the future and imprisoned von Thakris for research.

von Thakris ship the Amadeo would be the first military design for a combat Airship. Though very limited in capabilities it was a precursor for designs to come. The Amadeo, was a very unstable creation. The size of the Merthyr used was rather large, and theorists estimate that its current value to be over £80 million. This drawback did not stop him, and later he launched the Amadeo II which would be used against the campaign against the elves. Interestingly enough, the Elves were able to find their own Merthyr and harness its energy to create Sy'Dora.

The Amadeo II was considered a great success until the engine had worn out only a year after its creation and crashed the Airship into the mountains, destroying the Merthyr. For his failures von Thakris was executed and new scientists were brought in. Puzzled of how the Elves managed to create such a stable design, the engines were better designed and also the stones themselves would be shaped and cut more. Many had attempted to cut the Merthyr they found into separate pieces, but one experiment had caused the stones to lose their energetic ability. Ferrian Military Scientist Alfred Mueller had designed the Amadeo III, which is what the current airship lines are based on. Using the latest in engine design the Amadeo III was the first of its kind, being emulated by the Lumecian Airship the Constitution. Both the Amadeo III and the Constitution were designed with perfect engines, the Amadeo III was destroyed due to a slight crack in the stone from when it was being cut to fit the engine. The Constitution also faced a slight crack which caused the ship to lose power and crash. It is important to note that the Merthyr Crystals on both ships were re-cut several times to fit several engine designs.

Merthyr is the most sought after resource, excavating for it is an arduous task in the deserts of Xan. Since the crashing of the Amadeo III in 1906, a Merthyr crystal had never been discovered. While many pose that Merthyr can be found anywhere, it is highly unlikely due to the fact that all Merthyr Crystals discovered to date were already shaped, similarly to stones in jewelry leading to several theories.
