Shadow froze outside of the doorway, a stern look on her face. Jin glanced at her nervously, noticing her fists balled at her sides.

(What's your problem)
? Jin thought nervously.

Your father doesn’t seem to like me, no matter how much his face says otherwise.

(Are you... reading his mind?)
Jin gasped suddenly, startled at the thought of his father's thoughts.

"My name is Shadow thank you so much for having me." Shadow suddenly seemed to come to life; she politely brushed past Jin and sank to her knees, bowing at Jin's parent’s feet. “I promise to pull my weight as a grateful guest in this home until I am able to get back on my own two feet." her voice was clear and full of melodic appreciation. Still, Jin could feel her uneasiness. She didn't want to be there at all, and Jin almost regretted threatening to tell her secret. Was keeping her close worth putting her though pain.

"You two are just in time for dinner. Come, sit, and eat." Risa invited Shadow to the table eagerly, sitting her across from Des. Jin sat next to her, and Risa sat across from him, passing Shadow a plate. Shadow looked down at the plate sheepishly.

(So... are you still reading my dad's mind)? Jin thought

No, I Just wanted his initial opinion of me.

(And it's not a good one.)

...he thinks I'm ...different, and would rather not bring my differences into the house. Thinks I’ll distract you somehow.

(Erm, the mindreading thing is kind of distracting).
Jin admits

Glad I could live up to your fathers expectations. Shadow thinks bitterly.

"So Shadow, where did you come from?" Risa tried to start conversation.

“I..." Shadow gripped her chopsticks tightly. "I don't really know." Shadow eyed her plate fiercely. "My... guardians... they found me. I was still a newborn."

"Oh my, I'm sorry dear, I had no idea." Risa started to apologize.

"No, it's okay." Shadow assured her. "You had no idea." Shadow loosened her grip a bit. "They raised me in a small village."

"What village was it now?" Des asked.

"... It doesn’t exist anymore." Shadow gritted her teeth. “It fell after a terrible accident."

"What kind of accident?" Des inquired further.

"Well the village was under attack and many of the people were killed..."

"No shinobi were available to aid you?" Des calmly sips tea. "Your village I mean."

"Well we were still very much under developed..."

"And you of course remember this occurrence."

"... I don't remember the attack. I was still very young, maybe only four or five." Shadow began tightly gripping her chopsticks again. "After the village disbanded, my guardians took me to like at their countryside home. I lived there until they died about a year ago. Then I found my way here..."

"To become a ninja?" Des raised an eyebrow.

"Ever since the attack that destroyed my home, I've wanted to be one. If there were more shinobi present, maybe we would have survived. Maybe more could have been saved."

"Did you feel your lack of skill to be a factor?" Des asked.

“My..." Shadow suddenly became tense.

"I mean at that age you must have wanted to help passionately to protect what was dear to you."

"I..."

"You almost sound like you made it your personal responsibility to improve yourself." Des took another casual sip of tea, and Shadow's eyes began to tremble. "Because of your unfortunate past..."

"Father!" Jin stood up suddenly, unsure of why he had interrupted his father in the first place, and instantly regretting saying anything at all. Shadow's eyes cast on him suddenly. For once, her mind and his were both silence. The emptiness seemed to fill he room with a thick suffocating awkwardness.

"Son?" Des raised his eyebrow.

"Erm... I burned down that tree in the back yard while I was training!" Jin blurts without thinking. "I'm really sorry things just kinda got outta hand!"

"Ghah..." Shadow slumped over suddenly.

"Oh my!" Risa jumped up.

"She does that sometimes mom." Jin assured her.

"I... I'm sorry..." Shadow tried to stand, stumbling as Risa and Jin each took one of her arms.

"Jin, help me get her to the guest room!" Risa ordered. As they continued down the hall, Jin heard Shadow's thoughts resonate in his head.

Thank you.
~~~~~
Thank you for what you did back there. Shadow thinks in her room. I was getting uncomfortable.
(I'm sorry; my dad is just one of those people.)
Tell me about it, I don’t know if it was worse hearing his thoughts or hearing his actual words.
(... So are you ever gonna tell me about it. )
... I think its better I don't relive my past.
(Is it that bad?)
(I can read your mind, so I’ll know eventually. Tell me what happened.)
Jin… please… I can’t…t
(Just think about your past, think about that attack.)
Jin! Stop! I don’t wanna remember!
(What are you so afraid of? Shadow?)
Suddenly her mind frequency seemed to vanish. (Shadow!)
Jin jolted out of his bed, down the hall to the guest room. Shadow’s face was the usual red and her eyes glassy. She was unconscious yet again. Jin grabbed her firmly by the shoulders, shaking her a little. Her head rolled toward his, and he pressed his forehead to hers in frustration.
(Damn! I can’t give her mouth to mouth, what if my mom comes in the room? Or worse, what if my father…)
“Jin,” Des calmly appeared in front of the door, but his voice was still sharp and fierce.
“Dad!” Jin jumped slightly. “I can explain! She fainted again!”
“Son, this girl, she is odd, isn’t she?” Des asked calmly, as if he hadn’t noticed his son’s awkward appearance in the room. “You’ve never met anyone like her, have you. She amazes you. You are compelled to understand her for no reason at all except your innate curiosity. Am I correct?”
“Something like that…” Jin admited.
“Be aware son. Shadow is indeed unique, and remember who and what you are. When you get a feeling for your safely act on it. Don’t ever hesitate to protect yourself and others. If you do however… pass poor judgment,” Des starts to leave the room. “Rest assured I won’t. I’ll eliminate the problem.”
“Eliminate… Shadow…” Jin gasped, confused.
“The way of the shinobi is to be loyal. To protect its people from anything that would threaten it. Remember that.”
“Eliminate… Threat… Shadow…” Jin laid Shadow’s slowly quivering body down on her bed. Her face was soft, angelic. She just existed in peace with the moonlit room. “What could my dad mean?”
"A threat huh? Hmm..." Jin plopped down on his bed and stared up at the cieling. Beams of moonlight shining through the window illuminated most of his room in pale blue light. It seemed so calm and peacefu, but Jin's mind was plagued by what his father had said not too long ago. "A threat..." he repeated it again to himself before his eyes felt strangely heavy. "A threat....Shadow.."
His eyes closed. "Why...?"
----
Jin was standing in the middle of a clearing in a dense forest. It was dark, maybe around midnight. Ahead of him, a thick ray of moonlight created a circle at the middle of the clearing, or it seemed to be moonlight...there was no moon in the sky. He looked around again and tried to recognize anything familiar in his surroundings. From what he could tell, it was no where near Konoha. The air was frigid, frost coated the ground, and mountains dotted the horizon. Where the hell was he?
As he scanned the area once more, his eyes fell back upon the single ray of light in front of him. He suddenly felt compelled to walk into it, but he was scared and he didn't know why. He tried to force himself to stop moving but his body was moving on its own. "Stop!" He shouted. "Stop!"
His body continued moving against his will and he found himself in the middle of the circle of light. It felt odly warm, like a human's body. Then he heard a low growl from above him. He looked up to see a pair of deep purple demonic eyes hovering above him. A feeling of sheer terror shook his body to the core. He couldn't move, couldn't open his mouth to scream. The eyes then began descending upon him and his body fellt like it was on fire. His mind was racing and he was unable to break his gaze with the eyes. It was maddening. His body quaked furiously as he experienced a great deal of pain throughout it. It was...changing. He could feel his skin rolling off of his arms, then feeling cold and hard. His eyes felt like they were being pulled into the back of his skull and his jaw felt as if it were elongating. The growl again returned but it was much llouder, deafening even. It continued like this for mere moments, then all was black...
----
Jin jolted from his sleep in a cold sweat. Everything was dark, eyes had yet to adjust to lack of light now in his room. "That dream...was different from the others..." He said trying to driift back to sleep, but found it difficult to do so. Instead, he hopped out of bed, walked down the hall, and walked out onto the back deck which overlook the front yard and a shallow pond. He sighed and stared up at the night sky.
Shadow concentrated on the darkness. She knew if she did, Jin wouldn't hear her, then maybe he wouldn't realize she had seen everything. She invaded his dreams.
It wasn't her intention of course, dreams were, in a sense, thoughts. She could read his thoughts and so, when she woke up with chills down her spine, she had seen everything he had. The dream was so vivid, so mind numbingly real that se had to check to make sure she indeed was still alive. Obviously he was to preocupied by her dream to hear her terrified thoughts. She was not afraid of Jin at all, rather, what would become of Jin.
Groggily, she sat up.
Jin... her mind whispered to him throught the stillness of the night.
(... Come on outside.) Jin offered.
Shadow hesitated, but followed his order. Quietly, her bare feet danced across the room and down the hall to the outside deck, where Jin was standing. he looked worn out.
(That dream was diffrent than the others...) he thought.
It was... terrifying... the words in Shadow's mind choked up, as if it was hard for her to even think about them.
(Oh... you saw that, huh...) Jin kept his eyes glued on the pond.
Something seemed to come after you... and something seemed to awaken inside you to fend it off... Shadow looked to the sky, the wind caressed her hair and her profile was illuminated in the moonlight. I think... I think I remember that place. She gripped her arm tightly, her nails digging into her skin. I understand now...
(What? )Jin's mind seemed to suddenly snap to alertness.
Something in you is about to awaken, correct?
(Yes. But how did you...)
Your father was thinking about it. But what ever is awakening in you... She clenched her arm harder, a few drops of blood began trickling down. Whatever is in you is interacting with me. Or rather what's inside me. They want each other.
(What?) Jin spun around quickly to look Shadow in her hazel eyes. Angry tears ran down her cheeks. (Something inside you?)
Something inside me... wants to destroy you. To destroy everyone. Again. It wants to kill again.
(Again?)
"Think about it!" Shadow suddenly begain speaking outloud. "It explains everything! Why you keep nagging me, why I automatically tune into your thoughts effortlessly. Did you ever stop to wonder why you cared so much about what happens to me? Why should it be your problem if I am homeless, if I run off somewhere! Well..."
"I..." Jin submited to her anger. " I was just interested, that's all. You interest me..."
"Because something inside me wants to spatter your blood on the wall!" Shadow blurted. "Don't you understand! I told you! I'm a freak! A monster." Shadow turned her back from Jin. "The reason I don't remember getting attacked... is because I was the attacker."
"What!" Jin gasped and backed away from Shaodw, just a step. " You don't mean that, you can't mean that. You were four years old! That's impossible!"
"You can read my mind. You know I'm not lying." Shadow faced him angrily. The moonlight case a shadow over her face. her eyes seemed to glow purple. "Look at me. Are these not the eyes of a killer."
"I..." Jin turns from her. " I won't believe it Shadow! I can't. Not you, not a killer."
" You are right, I'm not a killer. I'm a murderer." Shadow backed away from him. " Worse still, I'm a monster."
"You are human. We all make mistakes." Jin tried to console her.
"I tried to off myself once. And again, and again." She chuckled a little. "As you can see I failed. I just won't die. I can only kill. I destroy!" Shadow spun away from Jin, preparing to bound off. " Maybe I should just wake your father now and let him off me! he was bound to anyway!" Shadow started to dart, but was stopped by Jin firmly taking both her wrists, and stern stare on his face, just like his fathers.
Nothing was said for a long time. An awkward silence. "You think you're a moster huh? You haven't seen my family, nor know our history..."He gaed into Shadow's eyes deeply,then looked down at his feet before speaking up again. "I want you to see something..." He let go of her wrists, but did not raise his lowered head. He stood at the edge of the balcony where the moonlight was strongest, arms crossed, with his back to the railing. "Look down there, in the backyard and tell me what you see." Shadow tentatiively walked to the railing and peered over it to look at the lawn below. Jin heard a slight gasp escape her mouth. Over much of the lawn, what should have been a normal human shaped shadow from Jin, was the shadow of a massive winged creature with two horns and a tail which covered most of the backyard.
"Wha...what is that?" Shadow asked, taking a step back,
"That," he said with force, "Would be my family heritage. The will of the divineeeee beast.. the power of the black serpent..." He said slowly. "We Kanefura, that are born with this power, or curse as some see it...we are the embodiment of an age old destructive force that plagued this world for centuries before being hunted down and annihilated...." He took a breath and continued. "Since there's so few of us left now, we aren't considered a threat to the world anymore."
"I..I didn't know..."
"How could you? I look normal enough right? Save the freaky colored eyes." He laughed a little, but it was forced.
"So we're both monsters then...but you're no murderer...like me..."
"The kiliing intent and hatred this blood has for the world is more than enough to drive me to be one...rather I would like to or not..." He trailed off. A sudden gust of wind swept over the pair, and they were again in silence in the darkness of night.
The restlessness of the night couldn’t move the two. Shadow’s eyes locked with Jin’s. For a while, they looked like stone figures, forever frozen in their morbid states. Finally, Shadow could bear the silence no longer. She approached Jin cautiously, as if afraid that her movements would make him lunge at her throat, or worse, she would mercilessly begin clawing at him. Jin’s breathing suddenly stopped, his heart began racing as Shadow came close to him. Too close.
Please relax. Shadow tried to reassure him, though she herself was not sure of what would happen next. Firmly, she grasped both sides of his head, right by the ears. Gently she pressed her forehead to his. I’ve never tried anything like this before. She admitted calmly. Please bear with me.
"What… what are you doing?" Jin whispered breathlessly.
I’m sharing it with you. Everything that happened that night, you can see it for yourself. Her eyes were closed and she was concentrating hard on remembering. Every detail, every gust of wind, every cry of the night flooded her mind, and seemed to play out before Jin’s very eyes.
Jin was in a place he had never seen before. The moon was full and cast a sinister glow on everything. Small homes and buildings were all around him, and he noticed one in particular. A little girl was climbing out the window. Her silky back locks and chocolate cream skin were bold with her pale white night gown.
(Shadow!) Jin thought immediately, and the girl turned to him suddenly, with tears in her hazel eyes. Jin stared at her closer, noticing the tears were unusably dark, and as one fell from her cheeks and stained her dress, he identified the color as crimson. She was crying blood. Suddenly there was an uproar in the house she had just escaped from, a scream that pierced the night and made Jin cringe with pain, stumbling to his knees.
“he is dead!” the voice shrieked. “My son is dead!”
At the sound of the woman’s voice, Shadow began bounding down the street, as fast as her little legs could carry her. The door to the home suddenly flew open, and a stern faced man came out, carrying a boy about twelve years old in his arms. Behind him, a sobbing woman screamed “That demon child! She murdered my son!”
Suddenly, all the homes seemed to turn on their lights, people bounded out of their homes. Some in anger, some in fear, most in confusion.
“This child! She was nothing but trouble from the start! A nobody! A demon discarded at birth!” the man yelled to the villagers, his arms shaking with his son’s slain body. “ She was abandoned and we brought her into this village, we raised her, we named her, and look at how she repays us! She took a kunai knife and stabbed my only son to death while he slept! My child is dead because of that sinister evil jealous wench!” the man laid his son down gently on the grass, then pointed angrily down the street. “ let this vile offspring not live!” with his words, the crowd became enraged, and men began searching for Shadow.
Jin’s vision seemed to blur suddenly, and he saw Shadow hiding in an abandoned mill on the outer area of the town. The man from earlier was looming over her, a sick grin plastered on his face.
“I didn’t do anything!” her childish voice shrieked. “YOU stabbed him! I saw you! I saw you!” she repeated fearfully. Angrily, the man kicked her in the stomach, making her howl with pain.
“What are you going to tell them?” he laughed, making his whole body shake and rumble. “ you read minds and found out about my plans for mutiny, then saw me murder my only child, and you are just an innocent freak who crys tears of blood?” his laugh disgusted jin, and he grinded his teeth in frustration. “ The only person who ever believed you was my son, and look where he is now. Any final words?” he raised his foot and came down hard on her head. “ pity, your mind reading cound have become so very useful. But your more of a liability now, a failed experiment. Better you just be eliminated.” The sound of Shadow’s skull cracking amused him, and he pressed down harder, making her squeal even louder.
Suddenly, the hairs on her head began to turn silver, her screaming came to a halt.The man glanced down at her and stumbled backwards, surprised.
“What the hell!” the man sputtered as her tiny body stood up, her face still terribly disfigured and drooping, almost sliding of her skull. Spiky, rugged, pale pieces of exposed bone protruded from her beaten body. Jin could barely believe it, she was alive, and she was pissed off. Her soft hazel eyes turned a dark, angry purple.
“You are so very ignorant.” She said finally. “thinking you could just ‘eliminate’ a being such as me? Is it really possible for such fools to exist?” she walked towards him so smoothly, it seemed as though her feet were just gliding across the floor. Fearfully, he stumbled backwards, falling belly up. Shadow stepped on him carelessly. “I pity your ignorance, and being a merciful being, I intend to put you out of your meaningless existence.” She bend down and stabbed her fingers into his chest, they impaled him almost effortlessly, as if stabbing into butter. She reached around, searching until she found his heart, then balled a fist, crushing it in her tiny but powerful grasp.
Instantly blood spurted from his mouth, his eyes popped out of their sockets and drooped, swinging back over the side of his face. She sat up apathetically, wiping the blood onto her nightgown, licking some of it that had spattered onto the sides of her mouth.
“This world… so full of hate and liars… this evil world I was brought into… must be cleansed of all the sick and twisted minds that inhabit it… the earths biggest flaw… is humanity…” and with that, she darted off into the night, blood dripping from her and leaving behind a trail of evidence.
For some reason Jin couldn’t follow her. He didn’t want to follow her. Somehow he knew what happened next. Everyone in that village, man, woman, and child, would have their blood on Shadow’s vengeful hands. She would take them in her grasp and destroy them, no matter how they pleaded or yelped in pain. She would impale them with her fingers, rip them to shreds in her teeth, grind them and crush them until there were no survivors. Just her, stained scarlet with blood. Just her chuckling with delight at a job well done. Just Shadow, crying crimson tears of sorrow.
Jin suddenly found himself in the present again and forcefully pushed Shadow away from him. She submitted to his disgust, falling backwards onto the deck and letting him gaze at her. She was the same as she was back then, her long black locks, creamy chocolate skin, and gentle hazel eyes. All of the innocence she had lost, it looked as thought it was still there. Shadow took a deep breath, then sat up on her knees, bowing her head at Jin, waiting for him to yell at her, to call for help, to yell at his father to wake and destroy her, or maybe to off her himself.
For a long time, Jin stood speechless, breathing deeply and trying to regain some composure. And Shadow remained at his knees, awaiting his disgusted reaction.
“Now you know.” Shadow whispered to Jin, her eyes clasped shut. “ I never asked to exist, it just happened. I never wanted this life, and yet, here I am, trapped in this inescapable destiny. Designed to kill without batting an eye, created to destroy whole villages in a mere night. I guess when I was born, my parents did the right thing. They were right to leave me alone, to let me die.” A single crystal tear fell from her eye. “ I never deserved that second chance, those villagers just should have…”
“Shut up!” Jin said fiercely, his fists clenched and his teeth grinding together. “Just shut up!”
Shadow obeyed him, silenced by the harshness in her voice. He was looming over her suddenly, and with his thumb, he wiped the single tear from her cheek. She looked up at his face, it almost looked like he had been crying to, but she was sure it was part of her imagination.
“Jin…” She said quietly. Suddenly he embraced her. Shocked, she just sat there, in his arms.
“nobody has the right to tell you whether or not you deserve to exist, not even you. You do exist, and that’s all that matters.” He said simply.
“but… I never wanted to…” she responded, still in awe.
“ no one every chooses to exist, we just do and that’s the way it is. You can’t change the world Shadow, just yourself.”
She didn’t respond to Jin, she just stood up, escaping his embrace, and walked toward the door.
“Jin… you’re the weirdest most difficult person I’ve ever met.” Shadow smiled a little. “But your hearts in the right place, even if your head is full of air.”
“Air!” Jin jolted up, insulted.
“I think competing against you will be fun eh, monster vs. monster.”
“Eh?” Jin looked confused. “ What are you talking about?”
“Goodnight rival.” She made sure to stick her tongue out at him playfully before returning to her room.
“Rival?” Jin sat there, puzzled, then smiled. He couldn’t understand Shadow in the slightest, but he knew she’d be sticking around for the long run, and that was enough for him.
OOC: You sure do post a lot at one time XD Btw, OOC stands for Out of Character and IC stands for In Character.
IC: It was morning, and it was quite warm. Jin awoke from the night before almost as if nothing happened, but the events that transpired were still fresh in his mind. The things he and Shadow had shared with each other..." Oi I know you can hear me right about now so get up."
(" But this bed...it's so comfortable...")
"I'm sure it is, seeing that you probably haven't slept in a bed in ages having been homeless. Anyway, when you decide to get up, I'll be at our training ground. We're supposed to meet our sensei there for the first time for some type of test or something." Jin rolled out of bed and bounced to the floor. He dressed himself quickly and headed out of his room and down the hall. He passed the guest room in which Shadow resided and saw that the door was closed, probably locked too. Though he reached for it anyway.
( "Don't you dare touch that knob, Jin." ) Shadow warned threateningly.
Heh, I figured that would get your attention. By the way, we don't have to be there for about another two hours.
( "Two hours? Why are you leaving so early?")
"Training of course."
( "Of course...")
"Well see you there." Jin started off and left the house, but not without saying goodbye to his mother and waving goodbye quickly to his father, who just nodded back and continued his business. He figured the faster he arrived at the training ground, the more time she would have to get some early training in, so he took his usual rooftop route.
Along the way he observed to various people residing in Konoha. Fellow Shinobi, common people, and...some shady looking characters in black cloaks. Though he paid the busy streets and dark alleys no mind and continued on to his destination. It took him about 10 or so minutes to arrive and the place was barren, perfect.
Training Ground number 9, it was full of lush green trees, an oval shaped field of soft dirt for sparring or general training, a couple of logs with bull's eyes on them, and a nearby lake, All of the other training grounds had a similar set up as well, but something about this one just seemed special to Jin.
He then got to work on his regiment. He started off with a few warm-up exercises, a few stretches, a short sprint around the grounds, and a breathing exercise. He then moved on to preliminary physical training with push-ups, curl-ups, crunches, and the like. He didn't really care for this type of training however, he believed he would benefit from chakra and training more so than physical training. Though his father told him that he needed to train mind and body together as one, so he might as well do it anyway.
Before he could start his next set of training though, he sensed the presence of another person nearby. They felt strangely familiar. "Oi, show yourself!" He said in a loud, clear voice.
"And why should I?" A feminine voice responded.
"You're here kinda early aren't you?"
"I could say the same for you, Jin."
"Ahh is that so...why'd you come here?" Jin placed his hands behind his head and looked up towards the sky. A branch in a tree behind him creaked.
"Well I could smell your sweat from a mile away and I figured I'd see what was up." Zara hopped down from out of the tree behind Jin and she strolled up to him with a smug look on her face. Tala trotted along at her heels, tail wagging wildly.
"Ahh that's good to know...you sure you weren't stalking me?" Jin laughed.
"Stalking...tracking. It's all the same. It's good training for me."
"I'm sure it is...."
"So, where's Shadow?" She scanned the area and sniffed the air. "You didn't rape and kill her or something did you?" Zara said in a casual tone.
"What the hell?! Where'd that come from?! And no I didn't do anything like that!" Jin sounded exasperated.
"Hahahaha. Your reactions are priceless. You're good entertainment you know that?" She giggled again.
"Right...I'm sure I am..." He lowered his arms and turned to face her. "Would you care to join me?"
"Not especially. I like to conserve my energy."
"Fine fine. Suit yourself then..." He removed a kunai from the dingy brown tool pouch on his pants leg, and aimed at one of the logs with a bulls eye.
"Besides..." She took out a kunai of her own. "I think I already surpass you in a couple of different aspects anyway." She launched the kunai with frightening speed and it was embedded deep with the log Jin was just aiming at.
"Bit of a show off are we?"
"Heh maybe," Tala barked happily and continued wagging her tail in a wild manner.
Two hours passed by, and Risa timidly walked to the guest room door.
"Shadow, Jin left without you dear. You are gonna be late for training."
"I know..." Shadow mumbled, intoxicated by the glorious feeling of actually sleeping in a bed. "But the meeting isn't for another two hours..." she started to drift back to sleep.
"Jin left two hours ago..." Risa said timidly.
"OMIGOD!" Shadow surged from the bed, surprised at how she'd let the time get away from her. Quickly she swung open the door and started to bolt past Risa.
"You'll be needing these." Risa mentioned, holding up Shadow's freshly washed clothes.
"You... washed my clothes?" Shadow took the garments, speechlessly. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome." Risa smiled. "Now hurry or you'll be late."
Shadow nodded, quickly closing the door and forcing herself into the clothing. It was official, living there wouldn't be so bad. She had her first friend and rival, Jin. She had Risa, who treated her kindly despite her random circumstances, everything seemed nice for the first time in a long time. That was, until she walked outside straight into Des.
Des looked at her sternly, patronizing her
"You," he began sternly. "Are late." the words were bitter and cold.
What's it to you. Shadow thought, and wanted to say so badly, but knew her place. "I overslept. It's been a long time since I slept in a comfortable bed." she bowed politely, secretly wanting to kick Des in the shin and run.
"I'll have you know, our family has a reputation. Our clan is well know as a powerful and disciplined unit. If you are going to stay under my roof, i request that you maintain this image to the best of your abilities." Shadow could since a hint of smugness in his voice.
"I'll do my best not to disappoint." Shadow replied coldly.
"I'm sure you will." Des said, "Try, I mean." and with that he continued on his way, leaving Shadow glaring at him. She didn't need to read his thoughts to know he was contemplating getting away with murder.
"I think that's my husbands way of saying he likes you." Risa smiled at Shadow.
"you think so?" Shadow forced a laugh. Cause I'm sure that was his way of saying 'I will extract your soul and burn your lifeless husk'.
With a quick nod to Risa, Shadow darted off. She wasn't exactly sure where the grounds were, thought she probably had slept in them one night. Jin was thinking about them that morning. Soft soil, lush trees, a pond; and if all else failed, she'd simply call to him.
Jin! She thought as she ran across rooftops, unsure of how close she had to be to him before the connection returned.
(Shadow?) A response came suddenly. (You are late.)
Tell me something I don't know. She rolled her eyes. Make some noise or something, I need to pinpoint your location.
(hold on a second.)
Shadow heard the shrill howl of a dog in the distance.
I take it Tala and Zara are present. Shadow moaned slightly. I'm so late.
Shadow followed the sounds to the grounds, where Jin stood pacing and Zara leaned playfully against a tree.
"You are late!" The two said in unison.
"And you two are annoying." Shadow yawned, stretching her arms.
"I take it you haven't warmed up yet." Jin seemed to scold Shadow. "Not the best way to impress sensei on your first day."
"Maybe I coulda woken up on time if someone hadn't kept me up all night." Shadow rolled her eyes at Jin, a grin plastered on her face.
"Really know?" Zara looked at Jin, matching Shadow's grin. "What were you doing?"
"I was talking!"Jin defended.
"And when I tried to leave you wouldn't let me." Shadow pointed out. " And you held me for a while."
"But... you... and ... that thing... and we..." Jin started stammering like a moron.
"ha." Zara laughed. "You two are priceless. Such entertainment."
Jin gave up, certain that the two girls were gonna torture him for a long time.
"Seriously Shadow." Jin pleaded. " You need to warm up."
Shadow looked around, ignoring him altogether.
"So where is our sensei?" She asked.
"Late too. Looks like you got off easy." Zara laughs. " Though he will notice you aren't warmed up like us. We worked for two hours."
"I doubt I have that much time." Shadow glanced at Jin, then Zara. "One of you will have to spar with me. It's the best we can do for now." she pointed at Zara. "You ready."
"Wait a second!" Jin felt offended. "Why not me?"
" you know why." Shadow's voice became serious. We'd know each others thoughts, every move you make, every strike, every blow. Some day, but not today. "Besides," Shadow's smile sent a shiver down Jin's spine. "I get the feeling Zara's been curious about my fighting style." She crouched down to a defensive position.
"heh, it's like you read my mind." Zara prepared to attack, Tala at her heels. "I tend to conserve my energy, but I'll make an exception just this once."
"you have no idea." Shadow pulled out a kunai. " Don't hold back."
"Ohoho? Doing a bit of training are we?" A voice from the trees closest to them asked. Shadow and Zara paused, and Jin scanned the trees where the voice had originated. None of them had sensed the presence of another person nearby, and Shadow had not heard the thoughts of anyone outside of Zara and Jin since she had arrived. They looked at each other, then back into the trees.
"Who are you and state your business!" Jin exclaimed. The trees rustled.
"Oh..I'm just a random shinobi you could say..."
"Random Shinobi huh?" Zara asked. "Well that's one part of the question. Now answer the other." Tala barked angrily.
"(Jin, this guy, I can't hear his thoughts...)" . Shadow shifted uneasily.
"That must be troublesome...I wonder who he is..."
Suddenly, a figured leapt from the rustling tree and onto the ground in front of them. It was a man with striking silver hair, clothed in black garb, and a jounin jacket. He was in a crouched position. Jin, Shadow, and Zara all jumped back a little, surprised. The man lifted up his head, revealing that he was wear an ANBU mask of a crow. He slowly raised his right hand, which caused the three shinobi to take a defensive stance with their kunai in hand. The man chuckled innocently, and placed his hand to the mask, put his thumb under the bottom, and shifted it off to the side.
The face underneath only revealed pale blue-gray eyes, as the lower half of his face was covered by yet another mask, made of black cloth. Jin looked at him, dumbfounded. "What the hell was the point of that other mask! Most of your face was covered up anyway and we still don't know who you are!"
"Oh right. Hehe. Well then. Allow me to introduce myself." He stood and placed the ANBU mask into his jacket. "My name is Kouzanjou Hatake. But you may call me Kouza, or sensei, whatever you like." His voice was hard, yet not threatening at all.
"Sen..sei? Wait...that means..." Jin started.
"You're our squad leader?!" All three genin said in unison, in awe.
"Correct you are!" He did a small applaud for them. "Now, I know you guys think I'm late, which technically I am, but I've been here the entire time, observing you all."
"Ehh?" Zara looked confused. "How's that? I didn't pick up on your scent at all...and come to think of it...I still can't."
"Oh, I prepared a little...perfume, so to speak, for your nose. A special concoction designed to mask the user's scent from scent seekers, like yourself."
"Ok, that explains why she couldn't detect you, but what about me and Shadow?" Jin asked.
"Ahh that's simple. I'm known for my ability to hide my chakra and presence. I'm so skilled at the technique that even the Aburame clan's chakra bugs have a difficult time locating me."
"Right...." There was a long pause. "So what now then, sensei." Jin asked.
"Now," Kouza paused, "You're going to introduce yourselves to me, tell me a bit about yourselves, and then you'll be given a test." He raised one finger. "Or, you could take the test first and I'll learn about you through that. Your pick."
"What kind of test?" Shadow cocked her head to one side.
"A simple one...I suppose." Kouza somewhat trailed off.
"You suppose?" She lingered on the last word.
"Well, it could be extremely difficult, or it could be very easy. From my past squads, it's been fairly easy. Though they still failed."
"So...they thought the test was easy, but they failed anyway...anyone ever pass this "test" of yours?"
"Yeah. One squad."
"And who were they?"
"The genin squad I was in after graduating from the Academy. It was administered by my old sensei." The three young shinobi were awestruck.
"And...just how many squads have you failed, sensei?" Zara asked nervously, while Tala shook timidly.
"The number stands at about 10 or 11. I say 11 because one squad was never seen again, so I count it as a fail, though they could have passed, but just never made it back." He said this without the slightest hint of remorse.
"So let me get this straight...this test of yours...has been easy to your past groups, yet they all failed. Then one group never comes back. What type of test is it?!" Jin asked with much apprehension in his voice.
"I guess you could call it a...scavenger hunt."
"Scavenger hunt..." Jin said in a low tone.
"Indeed a scavenger hunt. And I'll have you know that those who pass this test become very successful shinobi. Take me for example, and my old squad mate Sousule. Both of has became top notch ANBU members. Actually, Sousuke became the leader of ANBU before he became a teacher like myself. I had that same opportunity, but it's just way too much responsibility ya know. Sousuke was much better suited for the job." Kouza stopped his speech, looked up at the sky, then looked back at his new squad. "So...enough of that. Have you all made your choice as to what you want to do first? I suggest you decide fast, because you're going to need all the time you can get for the test."
"Errr guys..." Jin said turning around to face his squad mates.
"Correction, girls." Zara remarked.
"Whatever..." Jin sighed. "Anyway, I think we should just do the test first. I mean, telling him about ourselves would be pointless if he's just going to find out about us during the test." Shadow and Zara nodded, and Tala barked happily. "So it's decided then..." He turned back to face Kouza. "We're taking the test first."
"Good! You just passed the first part of the test!"
"Ehh?" The three said.
"A good shinobi should never reveal anything about themselves verbally to a stranger. Who knows who or what could be listening in on you. And for all you know, I could have been an impostor, but I'm not by the way. Now the details for the rest of the test. As I said, this will be a scavenger hunt. Your mission is to find honey, a lizard, and a flower."
"EHH?!" The three said again.
"Well your test has just begun. Good luck guys...guy..and girls....and dog..." With that, Kouza vanished in a puff of smoke.
"What the hell?!" Jin yelled out.
"Err...anyone else see something wrong with this scavenger hunt...?" Zara scratched the back of her head furiously.
"Umm..this test is obviously not as easy as he says it is..." Shadow shoved her hands into her pockets. A few second later, a kunai whizzed by her ear and impaled a tree a few yards away from her. She was slightly startled at first, but she noticed a piece of parchment attached to the end of the kunai. She ran over quickly to the kunai, while Jin and Zara, who hadn't noticed the projectile were off in deep thought. She ignored the absurd things she was hearing and picked up the parchment. It was a note. She read it quickly and sighed. She ran back to Zara and Jin and shoved the paper at them. "Guys, apparently we have four days to finish this...and..."she paused, "none of these items are within Konoha's borders."
"Ahh that's great...but...he wasn't all that specific of what the things were. I mean, how are we supposed to know what type of lizard, or honey, or whatever we're supposed to get?" Another kunai whizzed by, but this one was aimed at Jin's head, so he was forced to duck to dodge it. Tala leapt into the air and caught the speedy kunai in her small jaws and trotted back to the group. Jin reached down and took the kunai from the dog. This kunai had no paper attached, only a white bandage or something wrapped around the handle and the Konoha ninja village insignia scribbled on it. Jin just stared at it. He stared for a good couple of minutes at the thing before finally putting it into his tool pouch. "What the hell...are we...supposed to do....with that?!"
"Maybe it's a clue or hint." Shadow responded.
"Or just some random kunai that holds no significance whatsoever..." Jin responded back.
"I highly doubt that, Jin." Zara remarked. Tala ran up to Jin's leg and bit it fiercely. He yelled out in pain.
"Your dog...bit me...why?" Jin said rubbing his leg.
"You said something she didn't like."
"Ahahaha....funny..."
"C'mon guys let's get a move on." Shadow said. "I say we leave the village at the eastern entrance."
"Alright then..." Jin said, still rubbing his leg. The three started off away from the training ground and made their way onto the rooftops moving quite swiftly towards the east gate of Konoha.
honey... Lizard...Flower... Shadow's thoughts raced as she followed Zara and Jin outside of the east entrance.
(Shadow, I think for this particular assignment, it'd be good for you to speak out loud so Zara can give input.) Jin suggested.
Not until I get my thoughts organized. Shadow stopped suddenly, making Jin and Zara stop as well, puzzled.
"Get a move on." Zara complained. 'Four days will go by fast."
"I understand that. That's why I think we should think this through first. Lay out our weaknesses and strengths, that type of thing." Jin nodded, and Zara paced impatiently. The thrill of hunting was calling her.
"Well?" Jin looked at Shadow.
"Well first we'll look at our strengths. We've got Zara and Tala, two fast hunters. That should play in our favor."
"Agreed." Jin and Zara said in unison.
"And Jin and I work together well as a unit." Shadow said carefully.
(That is to say, we can hear each others thought process.
) Jin nodded to Shadow behind Zara's back.
"Alright, now that we've stated the obvious, anything else?" Zara asked impatently.
"Well our mission objective; retrieve three common items, a lizard, honey, and a flower." Shadow took a kunai and began drawing something in the dirt. " of all those things, which seems to be out of place?"
"The I'd have to go with the lizard." Jin said. " You can pretty much find a flower anywhere, and where there are flowers there are bound to be bees making honey."
"I agree." Shadow said, continuing drawing what seemed like a map. " So I figure go for the hardest thing first, that lizard, and perhaps we'll find the other things on the way. But here's the part that trips me up." Shadow finished drawing. "Lizards would most likely be in desert regions, which makes sense, considering that eleventh group might have gotten lost in a sandstorm and died, hence their disappearance."
"Teh, what a pleasant thought." Zara laughs playfully.
"So our best bet would probably be going to travel to the land of wind. I figure with the lay of the land we will be able to find the other things we need along the way. But there is a catch."
"Which would be?" Zara asked.
"To travel to the land of wind takes three days. We have four. Even if we retrieved everything, we wouldn't make it back in time." Shadow sits back on her heals. "any suggestions."
"... I think the answer is simple." Zara crossed her arms. "We need to cut that three days into two days, two going and two coming."
"I can't help but think it's not that simple." Jin paced. "There is something more that we are missing here. What if we do that and still fail."
"We bring back the items on time, no way we can fail." Zara said with Tala barking in agreement.
"If it were that easy then how come none of the other squads passed." Jin argued.
"I don't know, maybe they were dumb."
"There's more to completing this task than just completing this task!" Jin yelled finally.
"Well we'll never complete the task if you two keep yelling!" Shadow said finally. The three sat in silence for a long time.
"We... are wasting so much time..." Zara said finally. Tala barked in agreement. "So, we have this 'easy' yet impossible task to complete, lets attack this head on." She pointed at the map Shadow had drawn on the ground. "The thing furthest away from us would be the lizard. We wanted to cut the three day journey into a two day one, which is good. We'd make it back just in time. But..." Zara trailed.
"But what?" Jin raised and eyebrow.
"What if we cut those two days into one day. One day to get there, and one day to get back." Zara folded her arms. "If we were to finish early, then it would show we were efficient, cunning, and quick on our feet."
"True." Shadow nodded. "But here's the thing. If expert ninja traveling at top speed make it at three days, it's a stretch for us to even try two, how are we gonna cut it to one?"
"Simple." Zara chuckled. " Tala and I will retrieve the lizard, while you and Jin find the flower and honey. We meet back here in two days, return to sensei, and it's a done deal. No way he could fail students who completed the assignment in a fraction of the time." Jin and Shadow looked at each other speechlessly. "What? You said it yourselves, you and Jin work well as a unit, and Tala and I are amazing trackers. I'm just putting our specific talents to work."
"But..." Shadow started.
"As logical as it seems..." Jin trailed.
"I don't think..." Shadow continued.
"Splitting up..."
"Is the best idea." Shadow finished.
"Well I don't see why not. We received vague instructions to collect vague items. The way I see it, whats not forbidden is allowed. Each of us collects one item. All seems fair." Zara eyed Jin and Shadow impatiently. "well?"
