Shadow strolled casually through thoughts, amused with some things, disturbed by others. The human mind was a sick thing to surf through. She was glad she wouldn’t have to be around this place much longer. School was a breading ground for thoughts and feelings she would rather not encounter. Of all insecure and mentally unstable places, school was the mighty jungle. Shadow relaxed more. Her insomnia was catching up to her. Her eyelids began to loosely shield her tired eyes. (Gahh he knows....I'm so screwed when I get back home.) Shadow’s eye’s sprung open so quickly, it was painful. Never had she encountered a voice so clear in her head as the one she’d just read. She quickly began searching for its source, but the thoughts of others clouded her all at once. Quickly she deactivated her mind reading, relaxing from the draining efforts. Mind reading was no easy task. It often left her fatigued if she concentrated too long or hard.

Shadow decided to reactivate it after a few minutes, in order to regenerate some energy. She figured napping in the hall would be easy enough. Nobody noticed her when she was awake, why would they notice her asleep? (Shadow has no family ties; I figure she will be the more difficult one to find.) Yet again Shadow’s body shocked back to alertness. She was certain she had deactivated her readings. Even then she could feel her mental power regenerating inside her. But who's ever voice this was, it was clear and almost effortless to pick up.

Someone is searching for me. Shadow’s thoughts raced. Clearly this had to be one of her teammates. The only problem was the voice. The clear and effortless frequencies of thoughts that seemed to flow into her mind.

I only wish to read minds of my own will. If this person is on my team, then it would be an annoyance to hear every idea that comes across his mind. Not to mention the fact that he would probably find it an invasion of privacy. Shadow clasped her eyes tightly, trying to concentrate on something, anything that would drown out the clear thoughts penetrating into her mind. So intent on blocking out the sounds, she didn’t notice a boy crouching down beside her, whispering in her ear.

“Are you perhaps Shadow Shizo, of squad nine?” Jin asked.

The voice is so loud and even clearer now. As if the person were standing next to me! Shadow complained. I can even feel the sound resonating in my ear.

“Are you perhaps Shadow Shizo, of squad nine?” Jin repeated.

Shadow’s eyes opened, her head quickly snapping to the side as she realized a boy with deep indigo eyes and crimson bangs staring at her. For the first time in a long time, she wasn’t invisible anymore. Shadow, completely caught off guard, hated it.

Submitting to social standards was never quite Shadow’s forte, and being surprised only made matters worse. Adding in the boy’s close proximity and the fact that she was unintentionally reading his thoughts, Shadow instantly longed to truly become invisible. As she helplessly racked her brain for some sort of response, their eye’s seemed to be locked in an inner battle. Jin wanted a simple answer, and Shadow wanted to vaporize into nothing.

With Shadow’s face turned an odd shade of reddish purple. In a desperate attempt to formulate a response, she had forgotten to breathe completely. Convinced that the boy in front of her considered her a complete loon, she squeaked out a response.

“Yes I am.” Her babyish voice finally found its way out, coarse and unused. The room seemed to spin, her brain forcefully screamed BREATHE! But all efforts were futile. As the words left her lips, her head slumped forward and vision blurred.
