Shadow’s eyes jolted open, carefully observing her surroundings. She was alert, too alert. Sleep always evaded her on account of her fear that someone would pass by and notice her. It was necessary for her to stay hidden, even if it meant sleeping under bridges and in forests, inside dumpsters and even in ditches. She didn’t want anyone to find her. Out of sight and out of mind. That was her way of life. She quickly rose to her feet, dusting off the usual daily grime. Beside her, only a small sack of clothes, two kunai knives, and some spare change were visible. It was all she had and all she needed. Today was another day blending in, of trying to be a decent Genin. That was her whole reason for ever leaving her lonely country home. Her guardians had passed almost a year earlier, and afterwords she had confined and starved herself ,calmly awaiting death, so she could join them in the afterlife. However, something had persuaded her otherwise. Whatever that 'thing' inside her was, be it hope, optimism, ignorance, or insanity, it brought her to the Leaf Village to train as a ninja. She walked casually to the academy steps. Timidly walking through the doors, Shadow was proud of how invisible she was to the village members. Even her sensei would forget her name from time to time. It would only make it easier in the event she were to disappear. But now she had a new conflict, Squad nine. She grimaced at the thought. No one must know, she thought fearfully about her hazy past. She understood being a Genin meant pairing in squads and completing missions together with others, but refused to submit to modern social standards. It was just her way. Besides, friendship was a luxury she wanted desperately but knew she didn’t deserve. She deprived herself the treasure for the simple fact she knew it would be almost sinful for her to taste it. Keeping to herself, Shadow found her way to a corner, sinking down to her knees. She was skilled, true, but didn’t think much of the fact. She could be better, but had to deal with the face she knew nothing about how to completely control herself. Random visions, strange voices, mind reading, it was far better for her to just try to get by without even considering whatever bloodline gifts she may have had. Moaning, she contemplated her next concern. Two other students she would have to become close to. She kept to herself the entire year and still was unsure of what anyone’s name was. These students had lived together in the village for their whole lives. They had mothers, fathers, siblings, uncles, aunts, grandparents; they could probably trace their ancestors back to the very founding of the village. But she was an outsider, a stray that had wandered into their perfect world. She chuckled cheerfully to herself. No use beating myself up again. She thought, and her eyes started to observe the students moving about the halls. Concentrating, she began to practice reading the simple minds of the clueless students around her, all the while trying to remember the name and faces of those two kids on her squad.
