Mission: He's a Little Runaway

"He could be dead, and you're just pacing around hoping for the best!" The woman cried, almost hysterical now. She ran to the door, ready to pull her coat off the rack and run out to find her son, Tarou herself.

"Look, sweetie," her husband soothed, walking up behind her and placing a hand on her shoulder, "we requested a ninja's help. We gave the Raikage's office everything they need to know. We'll hear back from them any day now. Panicking won't do any good."

The team to whom the mission was assigned should be meeting at the Kumogakure gates any minute now. The sky was cloudy and grey, but there would be no rain or lightning today. The bandits who took Tarou travelled in a group of ten, and they had no ninjutsu or genjutsu, only basic weapon skills. They were currently less than a mile southwest of the village, hiding in a mountain cave...

Yuurei Hayate woke from his hour of suspension in an excellent mood that morning.
A small crime syndicate had recently sent a representative to scout for younger agents for hire; he had stood out wonderfully amongst his cousins. Even better, the idiot had tried to double cross Hanako, the current clan matriarch, and kidnap him and a few other Yuurei children.
Needless to say, the man was unsucessful in his attempts, and...dealt with accordingly.
The content smile on Hayate's face was, for once, sincere. He sped up into a light jog, waving to the owners of the local shops his family frequented. He bobbed and weaved easily through the light crowds dotting the street, and slowed his pace when the village gates were in sight.
'Huh. I at least expected Kamishiro-sensei to be here early.'
Hayate sighed, and fixed the scroll and kunai holster on his hip, eying the crowd for his teammates.

With her pack strapped to her back, Tristan dashed through the streets of Kumo. She ran as fast as she could, trying to make it to the gates. She couldn't believe it. She was late again. This was starting to be very annoying. She turned left, ran two blocks, turned right, and kept going. She went faster and faster, every second she gained speed. It seemed like she would just break the time barrier. Well everyone who saw her run knew she wasn't going that fast, but she was still going pretty quick. Finally she saw the village gates up ahead. She was expecting a big "why are you late" speech from Lacus-sensei. But to her surprise, all she saw was Hayate standing there. She came to a quick and full stop, almost tripping in the process. "You got to be kidding me," she said, gasping for breath. "I'm early? And after running so fast think I was late." She fell back and landed on her butt, gasping heavily to catch her breath. I'm such a moron, she thought.

Rengeki overslept that morning. When he'd actually figured it out he dashed out of the house still trying to get his chain whips and senbon set in their proper places. He could hear a few laughs coming from people he passed, but the laughs were cut short as the chain whips that were being stuffed in his pockets tripped some of the people he passed. I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot! WOULD YOU CHILL THE HELL OUT, RENGEKI?! Damn, it's not like they're going to start the mission without us! Not the time to be screaming at me, Tadashi! Then calm down! You're giving me a friggin headache with all your stress! Remember, I'm connected to your heart and head, doofus! Whatever emotion or stress you feel I feel it too! I just don't reciprocate the feeling like you do! Rengeki nearly tripped as one of the whips caught on a big guy's leg, it dragged the guy down and threw Rengeki forward a few feet before finally smacking into a building backwards. Dang! How the hell that happened, I don't wanna know! C'mon, get up! You're already late, ya need to catch up! And for god sakes would you please reset your watch!" Rengeki finally got the chains in his pockets, the senbon in their pouch, and he rewound his watch so that it was working again.

He finally managed to get to the gate, twelve minutes late by his timing. "G-Gomenasai. I'm sorry to hold you up. Wait, where's Sensei?" He looked around quickly to see if there was any sign of the Jounin. Unfortunately he couldn't see hide nor hair of her. "I guess...Kamishiro-sensei is sleeping in." He sat down against the wall and started ruffling his hair to get it to its usual style. Heh, can't believe you forgot to fix your hair. Not like there's much difference between your common style and bedhead. It'll be funny to see you with bedhead someday. Rengeki thought, returning Tadashi's sarcasm. If that's the case, look in a mirror. You're forgetting how much I look like you in human form. He had a point there, Tadashi had usually looked like an absolute mirror of Rengeki in his most commonly used chosen appearance. Instead of holding back that yawn, catch up on your sleep while we have time off. I don't want you getting hurt because you fell asleep on your feet or something. Rengeki had to agree, leaned his head back and closed his eyes. Drifting off.

Lacus received word earlier that her team will be going on a mission, so she got her things ready for it. She went to see the Raikaga to get the information on the mission, so by the time she got to the gate she was a little late. "Sorry everyone that I'm late, I was getting briefed on the mission. It seams that we have to find a missing child, last reports said he was seen going southwest of the village. We have no time to waist we got to find him lets go!" Lacus said with much enthusiasm in her voice, wile looking at the genin. Then she took off out of the village heading southwest of it, though keeping pace with the genin.

Mission Information: Physical Description

Tarou is short for his age; he has dark brown hair and big brown eyes. The only clothing that was missing from the house was a pair of dark brown shorts and a green t-shirt. He should have a blanket with him; it's red with yellow stitching.
So far, the path the group had taken was clear and uneventful; no enemies or harm was evident. However, there was a single suspicious aspect that would soon pop up in their way: a shred of green cloth. This scrap of fabric was on the side of the road, next to some shrubbery. A keenly observant eye would see that a section of the foliage was destroyed: broken twigs, torn leaves, scattered rocks.

Hayate kept an even pace, his good mood keeping him in high spirits as the group of four walked the beaten path.
'Chances are,' he thought, looking around the rather barren path, 'if anyone came through here and staged an ambush, they'd be hiding in the bushes...There are too few trees along this path to make for a successful robbery...so, it stands to reason, that-'
"Wait."
He stopped in his tracks, noticing an odd cluster of broken twigs and fallen leaves breaking the monotonous line of dirt they'd been traversing.
He knelt down to look for signs of anything that might identify how the mess was made, and by what.
'No nests or tangles; not a small animal. Pretty large gap in the bushes, though...someone or something came through here...'
He was about to dismiss it and get to his feet when an oddly shaped leaf caught his eye. The ragged edges, and the 'leaf', upon picking it up he found, was soft to the touch.
"Faron-kun, Kasumo-chan, take a look at this..."

Tristan walked along side of Hayate. She was also in a good mood, thought she didn't know Hayate was in one. She was only a few feet behind him, but she let him lead cause he was always more observant. She looked around in case there were any ninja hiding in the bushes or whatever. An ambush could happen at any moment. Even if it's a joke.
"Wait" she heard Hayate say. Tristan looked down when Hayate bent down and picked up a leaf. Or what looked like one. "Faron-kun, Kasumo-chan, take a look at this..." He handed Tristan the leave and she noticed that it was soft. "Um..." she started. "This isn't a leaf. It's cloth."

Rengeki quickly caught up to the other two. He quickly heard what they were talking about. A...cloth? It might not be from the kid. You don't even know what color it is. Well, Tristan-senpai stated that it wasn't a leaf. If it could be mistaken as one then it's probably green. Forest green, if that much. Okay, good point. So what else are you thinking, pal? Rengeki looked over the girls shoulder to see the cloth. "Possibly from his shirt. Maybe there's something else around? I wonder if probably something dropped from his pockets or if another part of his clothing got caught around here." The boy looked closely around, his eyes weren't only for pinpointing targets or spotting the best place to hit an enemy with senbon, at least they could be used to find anything else around.

If these bandits did drag him around, ya think they'd at least try to cover their tracks. What skilled thief or kidnapper wouldn't know that? Apparently mountain brigands. If they did know then I guess they didn't do it so well. Okay, you're right. Tarou was brought along here, and then what? The only what is what other things can we find around here?

Lacus seen the genin stop and look at a shred of cloth, as they were talking about it Lacus surveyed the area. There must have been a struggle here or at least they went this way. "Look see how the twigs and foliage is destroyed along this route they must have went this they must have went this way. Hurry we must save this little boy for he must be so scared." So Lacus took off down the path of the destroyed foliage watching to see if there was a sudden shift in the path and on the look out for anything that may attack them.

The Genin were correct; it was indeed a piece of cloth from Tarou's shirt. As Lacus travels further down the path, she will see that there are further signs of struggle, such as trampled plants, slash marks on trees, and the like. This path of destruction will soon lead out of the woodsy area to a relatively low cliff, over which one could see a campfire burning in the distance, releasing a billowing column of smoke into the air. Perhaps this pseudo-camp is the locations of the bandits!

Hataye scoffed and shot after Lacus, staying right on her heels.
'For someone who thinks nothing of beating on kids, she sure wants to save this one badly...'
He stopped at the edge of the cliff, peering out at the smoke rising from the middle of the trees.
He grinned delightedly at his teammates.
"I never knew bandits who sucked so badly at hiding."
'They're either very confident, or very stupid. Both would be nice.'
"So. Do we want to sneak past them, grab him and go? Or knock them all out, then take him home? We could also engage them and steal him back without actually disabling anyone."
Personally, Hayate felt killing them was an easy out, but it would very likely traumatize the little boy, as well as hurting Lacus's maternal, weak, girly feelings.
"How shall we go about it, then?"

Tristan wasn't to far behind Hayate and Lacus, trailing behind them only by a few feet. She had her eye open for anything that might catch her eye. In fact, mostly the torn up forest caught her eye. Trees had slashes, branches were cut down, all that stuff. Going further down, she noticed Hayate stop. She walked up to him and saw the smoke rising from the trees. God, they suck, she thought. Slashes on trees, rising smoke. I mean they couldn't have made this any easier. She sighed and shook her head, all while listening to Hayate speak. "How shall we go about it, then?" he asked, ending his monologue. Tristan cracked her knuckles and grinned. "Grab and go would be the fastest way," she said. "But I wouldn't mind a beat down."

"But I wouldn't mind a beat down." Rengeki flinched at the thought. He hid it quick before either teammate or sensei saw it. If we're going into a fight over the kid I'll stick to a distance. I might be more useful with a few tools." The kid felt through his pockets where he kept his claw and chains. He was pretty good with them, but he hated to use any of them and was quite hesitant about it. That's why he never really seemed to be very good. The venom in his claws was his best option for close fighting. And his long whip-chain was useful in mid-range fighting. Overall Rengeki would excel at long ranges because of his large arsenal of kunai, senbon, and shuriken. "How do we know? I mean them. How do we know that they're the kidnappers? Tarou's been gone for a while now. The kidnappers could just as easily get further than this, it didn't take us even an hour to get this far." Maybe his hesitation was just going too far.

You're worrying too much. I'm just saying a few possibilities. Impossibilities if you ask me. I actually agree with Hayate and Tristan. Alright, Tadashi. I'm glad to hear you trust them now. No further than I can throw a mountain kiddo! I'm just saying that I think they're right! You'll never change...

Lacus thought carefully on what to do next she listened to each of the genin's idea's. After a minute she knew what the right thing to do was and was going to give them each instructions. "Ok everyone what we are going to do is rush to the camp fire but not attack, because attacking foolishly is a way to get yourself killed. We are going to scout the area and stick together, we must save this kid but I also want no harm to come to any of you. Once the area is scouted then we come up with a plan to save him, from here on out we should keep silent and move fast. Also no one acts unless we come under attack, so no provoking them ok. Now lets move." Once Lacus was done speaking she looked at them all with her normal smile and then took off towards the came fire.

The path to this campfire is clear and free of any serious obstacles. The camp indeed belonged to the bandits. Upon getting closer, it is visible through the hazy dusk that there are around 10 bandits, and empty bottles of alcohol are strewn about the ground. And Tarou is with them, sitting quietly on a tree stump!

The bandits are all clearly intoxicated, but they outnumber the ninja squad quite significantly. They don't seem to be paying much attention to the boy, ignoring him in favor of drunken stories... What to do, what to do?

Hayate noiselessly ducked behind a bush and formed a few handseals, his body sinking slowly into the ground. As it did, he kept out of the immediate path of the campfire, choosing instead to circle around to the far side of camp, attempting to approach Tarou from behind, unseen.
'A risky move', he thought, warily watching the bandits belch and snort, 'The parents never did tell us why the kid ran away in the first place; if he's in an unstable frame of mind, he could make this more difficult.'
Hayate silently prayed that the boy wouldn't give his teammates away; an emotional kidnappee was hard enough without being a child to boot.
'Would it be too much to hope that he's in the academy, or had some sort of training?'

Tristan watched as Hayate sink into the ground. One of his more stealthy jutsu. She grinned as he disaapeared into the ground. Good luck Hayate, she thought. Since Hayate tracked below, she decided to track high. She leaped up into the trees and hopped from branch to branch. Slowly making her way around the field, she could see the little boy sitting nicely on a tree. She could also see the bandits laughing like retards holding mugs and jugs and such. Upon landing on another branch, she slipped. Letting out a tiny yelp, she quickly forced chakra into her feet to stay on the tree. She sighed, hoping she wasn't caught and continued to leap off. Oh man, she groaned.

Hayate and Tristan were starting their ways. What either one was planning, Rengeki didn't exactly know completely, but he'd figure it out later on. He darted behind a tree, and then a different one that was a little closer to the bandits. Those drunk idiots, haha! This should be over quick Ren. How fast do you think you guys could end it? I don't know, I can't see Hayate. Tristan's in the trees. If I had to guess, this might be over quick. Then try to keep up. I don't want to be left outta this! The genin shook his head silently, Tadashi was really overconfident. Nothing unusual at all.

Once Rengeki was close enough to the camp of bandits, he took a small glance around. Still couldn't see his teammate, he didn't expect to see Tristan nearly fall. A slight hiss escaped the boy's lips as he saw it almost happen. Geez, she's gotta be more careful! You have no room to talk. The kid then lunged forward a few meters. He stopped and hid under a bush a bit behind one of the bandits. Should I knock him out or wait for them? Strike him, strike him, strike him! Tadashi thought excitedly. ...I got a better idea. If I latch my chains together, and then jump out from behind this guy and wrap it tightly around his throat. They won't expect it. They'll focus their attention on me! That should give Hayate-kun and Tristan-senpai the chance they need to get the kid. If we can get away with Tarou then the mission is done! Can you do that? I mean, you'd really choke him with that chain whip? That's unlike you. It's for Tarou, I'll do it to save him. Tadashi, If anything happens, appear and cover me, okay? Let's do it!

Rengeki looked up at Tristan, hoping she would understand what he was going to do. In a sign, he held up one of his chain whips, wrapped it around his own neck, and pointed to the bandit he was behind. His chance came when the bandit took a swig from his bottle, his head was back and the neck was open. With no sound, Rengeki lunged from the bush and wrapped his chain around the bandits neck tightly. Clearing his throat, the boy changed his voice to sound deeper like his famliar's. "So, who wants to see this guy breathe again?" Rengeki yelled. His act was complimented with a menacing grin and a, somewhat, deranged look in his eyes. "Come on, one of you guys speak up! If you don't then your partner is going to be wasted."

((OOC: the light blue is only Rengeki imitating Tadashi's voice. When it ends, so does the voice-acting.))

Lacus told them not to act unless we came under attack and now she is forced to fight. This fight has no meaning and should have not even started in her eyes. Lacus then knew that she would have to protect her genin since they were out numbered. She quickly made some hand signs as she jumped out of her hiding spot and exhaled a large yellow cloud over the area that the bandits were. This may effect Rengeki but he could be healed if that did happen. "Hayate grab the child we need to get him to a safe place watch over him!" Lacus screamed so the bandits would try and pay attention to her and get caught up in the poison cloud. She knew though giving out information on how many people she had with her was bad. Lacus hoped this this would end soon with no blood being shed this day.

The inebriated bandits were shocked by all of the sudden commotion and chaos. As a reflex, the man around whose neck Rengeki had wrapped a chain thrust an elbow back, straight into the careless Genin's gut. The others, though they were at first confident at the thought that they were up against one uppity little brat, clambered to their feet and tried to escape as soon as they saw that a Kumogakure Jounin was part of the group.

Tarou was left unprotected; they had really only snatched him in the hopes that they could use him as a hostage in future thievery attempts and such, but that idea hardly seemed worthwhile in comparison to keeping their lives. Unfortunately for the drunkards, the team leader's poisonous cloud locked their untrained bodies into paralysis, preventing them from fleeing, or moving at all.

Hayate kept an easy grin on his face, not wanting the boy to be any more unsettled that he already was. He slipped out of the ground and scooped the boy up, turning him in his arms so the child could clearly see his hitai-ate.
"Oi, Tarou-kun, nice to see you're alright. We're on our way back to Kumogakure, did you want to come along?"
It was enough that Kamishiro-sensei had opted to use her poison on an enemy this time. Effective, but the sight of the bandits twitching and frozen on the floor like gassed cockroaches was enough to scare any child. Rengeki's bold move had impressed Hayate, though the temptation to laugh was there when he was elbowed in the gut and thrust into the cloud of poison.
'Poor bastard.'
The tenderness that Hayate held the boy with betrayed his experience with children, and he looked briefly at his teammates, seeming sincerely sheepish.
Hayate shifted his weight and hooked his arms around the boy, trying to keep him comfortable as he leapt into the air, and leapt even higher to reach the trees beyond the clearing. He knelt under a tree shaded by thick, coarse leaves and leaned the boy against the trunk, checking his arms and legs for injuries with a tenderness that somehow seemed unlike his distant aura.
"Sure you're okay, Tarou-kun?"

Tristan looked as Rengeki made a bold move to try and intimidate the bandits. He even tried to put on a different voice to hide his real, whiny one. Tristan smiled, knowing that he had taken their attention away from her near fall. Then gasped as he was elbowed in the gut and sent into the poison cloud of gas Lacus ever so dearly made. Can't win 'em all, she thought. Good try though. She turned her attention to Hayate, who had already reached the boy and was now picking him up. Guess I didn't have to do anything really, she thought. She turned toward Rengeki in the cloud of poison and wondered if she should help. Even if it meant getting paralyzed. She inhaled a big gasp of breath and jumped down, grabbing him and hopping back up into the trees.

Rengeki lost his breath because of the elbow. When the paralysis cloud came by he was in no position to resist it. He'd been numbed just like every bandit had. Only to be helped out by Tristan. Even with his best efforts to move his lips he couldn't even manage to say the simplest of thanks.

Guess I owe her one. Tadashi, can you see if Hayate-kun got Tarou? Yeah, no worries. Tarou's fine now. How do you feel? I can't. That numbed me completely. Well, nice try pal. Next time, alright? Yeah, and maybe next time I'll be smart enough to hide my back behind the guy's that I'm strangling. Which makes me wonder. Why did you try to strangle him? Why not get me too? I can't give it a shot every now and then? Heh, if you can hold on tight enough. When we get home you and me are gonna have a training session, and it ain't gonna end till dawn! Tadashi, I hate you. Get over it.

Hayate had gotten the kid, and Tristan got Rengeki so Lacus felt better now that kid the kid and the team was fine. "Everyone we got some time till there unparalized so lets fall back and regroup where we stopped to discus out plan before." She took off to where Rengeki and Tristan was at to assess the damage to her team. Once she see that he was only slightly wounded but paralyzed she felt even better. She slightly jabbed Rengeki with a antidote needle and then ordered them to move to regroup with Hayate.

Luckily, the bandits were so shocked by the idea that ninja had been sent after them that, as soon as they could move again, they would pick up any crap they could and flee the Lightning Country. Additional objective fulfilled!

Tarou was still very shaken up by the whole experience and was only able to get himself to reply to Hayate with a nod and an expression of fear. He clung to the boy who was treating him so kindly, hanging on tightly to the first source of comfort he'd had in days. It looks like the best thing to do is get him back to his parents as soon as possible!

Hayate kneeled to help Tarou onto his back as his teammates rejoined him. The boy didn't seem in the mood to chat, and Hayate wasn't about to push it. He could save the tears for his reunion with his parents, where they would likely be better received.
Hayate settled the boy via piggyback, and broke into a light jog, not really caring if the others followed his lead. The faster they all got home, the less likely it was that any complications would occur.
"Just relax and hold on, Tarou-kun."

Lacus came over and gave an antidote to Rengeki. Tristan sighed and let him go. She smirked and winked at him before taking off. "You so owe me," she called out, making sure he heard. She followed Hayate from the trees, even when he went down to run. She didn't mind leaping through the air. She found it enjoyable to be exact. The freedom of the wind on her face. The hang time she has. It was all good.

The antidote applied, Rengeki's body started to recover. After Tristan left, Ren rubbed the back of his head and blushed. "Can't say I didn't see that coming. Although, I can't say I disagree with it. I really do owe her one." Pick up the pace, kiddo! Tarou's saved, the bandits are gone, and the mission is done. Let's get outta here, I'm getting hungry! The genin sighed and regained what little composure he had. "You're always hungry, Tadashi." He mumbled. Your point? I feel what you feel, so you can't say it's all me, bro! Rengeki left it at that and got to his feet. He began leaping from branch to branch in the direction the others had gone, hoping to catch up.

He walked beside Tarou and Hayate on the way back to Kumogakure. "Nice going, Hayate-kun." Ren said to his teammate.

Lacus led them back to the village and the child back to his parents. Then she turned to Rengeki and said with a very serious tone and look on her face. "Now Rengeki I care deeply for you and I never want to see you hurt. By you attacking not only did you put your life in danger but poor little Tarou's. When I say do not attack listen to me I am a jounin and your leader for a reason. First off we never in danger anyone's life, and we never put our self in a situation to were we in danger our own. So this is to all of you when I give a order please listen I don't want to punish any of you." Now lets report back to the Raikage then go home.
